Hello, this is my first review, so I ask you not to judge too harshly.
So, many of us have managed to snag JD junk for next to nothing, whether it's good or bad, it doesn't really matter if you got it for 5 cents. I was one of those lucky ones and grabbed as much as I could carry. Since in 90% of cases I was satisfied with the goods from the railway, it was decided that this trading platform can trust. And so, actively looking for another freebie at the last sale, my eyes fell on this phone. The seller set him a price of 107 green rubles, but at the same time there was the opportunity to apply a coupon for another 20, which made the price literally ridiculous. A total of 87 green for the following characteristics:

(table from the seller)

The parcel was tracked perfectly and arrived in about 2 weeks. Although the seller was not J Collection, the phone arrived in their branded box

The seller indicated the real estimated value, i.e. 87 USD. Inside, the box itself with the device was neatly wrapped in bubble wrap, so the presentation was not affected in any way by such long travels.

As you may have noticed, the MEIYI charger was included separately in the parcel, this is due to the fact that there is no charger in the box with the device (in theory, the kit should include a charger for China, but why do I need it for European sockets).
Box Contents:

What should be said about charging, it is dual-port, one port says 1A, the second 2.4A. I checked it while charging the phone, filonized it and did not run it under a load of 1.5-2 A, because... Simply there was no time for this when there was an opportunity. In general, I consider the charging to be suitable; in the photo below the phone charge is from 76%:

Battery 3100 mAh:

What can you say about the phone? It is no longer a new product on the market, the device is from 2014. Came with Android 4.3 on board and not the best Russification.

Speaking about the fact that many people complain about the back cover’s play, I can say that my copy is free of this drawback, although on the other hand, the backlash is not so bad and is even natural if the cover is held on by latches around the perimeter. And although the phone turned out to be quite light and fit nicely in the hand, its factory firmware turned out to be just hell, so it was decided to turn to w3bsit3-dns.com and do it well. The phone was very quickly and easily upgraded to cyanogen mod 12.1v7 based on Android 5.1.1

After the firmware, the phone flies quite well, but there are some nuances: the glove mode has disappeared, the sound of the speaker has become quieter, the sound when recording video on the camera is accompanied by some noise, I had to tweak it a little so that every time the phone is connected to the PC, it works in the mode USB storage. Otherwise, the firmware is good, the battery does not drain very quickly (brightness adjustment is automatic, games and Internet are moderate and at the end of the day more than 50%).
The device has a slot for one SIM card and a slot for micro SD up to 32 GB.

I like the display, good colors, viewing angles are also impressive. Automatic brightness adjustment works correctly, so reading and playing games is quite comfortable.

To the tests:
Antutu6 and data from CPUz:

Multi-touch test, Geekbench 3, Speedtest via wifi through a concrete wall.

Epic Citadel

GPS Test without leaving home

Cameras. Main: 13 megapixels, front 2. Since it’s winter now and there’s nothing special to photograph, please forgive me for such photos, they were taken solely to at least have something. I didn’t take any photographs from the front, because... not a fan of selfies.
Auto settings:

Manual with all sorts of ISO, etc. (just to see how it goes)

To summarize, what can I say: should we expect anything supernatural from a device for $87? I think the answer is obvious. Do I regret even one cent spent on this device? Definitely not. Although the phone is not without a number of shortcomings, more budget smartphone It will be almost impossible to find one with such characteristics. The only serious drawback is that out of the box it is not quite ready for use and it would still be better to flash it for further comfortable work. If you now take me back a month and give me a chance to order this smartphone again, I would definitely do it.
Please do not criticize too harshly; if in the future I do more reviews, I will try to take all comments and suggestions into account.

APPEARANCE. DESIGN

First of all let's look at the weight and dimensions of this smartphone. Just 2 years ago, such smartphones were perceived as shovels, but in 2015 such sizes are quite relevant.

Weight is 150 grams, perhaps someone will think that this is a lot, but I will say that in the hand this weight is practically not felt and in reality it seems much less.

The remaining parameters are as follows - 77x157x9.1 mm and here we can say that using this smartphone with one hand is almost impossible, unless of course you are the owner of the hand of Nikolai Valuev. The company understood that the size was, let’s say, not small, and introduced the so-called “One-Handed Operations” function into the firmware. This item can be activated in the settings. The essence of this function is that all the basic controls such as dialing, call buttons, unlocking, etc. move to the right or left side of the screen.

The corners of the smartphone are quite rounded. At first it seems that there are metal parts in the design of the smartphone, but this is not the case. For example, along the perimeter of the smartphone there is a silver plastic edging, very similar to metal. The back cover is also plastic, painted in a metal color and accordingly has a metallic texture, looks very natural. The base of the smartphone is flat, without protruding elements. The right and left edges of the lid are slightly rounded towards the top. The back cover is removable and accumulator battery Same. The only metal parts are the power button and the volume button.

The smartphone screen protrudes slightly above the body and this is the first time I have come across this approach to design. In turn, along the perimeter of the screen there is an insert of black, glossy plastic, which protects the edges of the screen. The right and left edges of the screen are about 3mm wide, and together with the body the width is already 5mm. The top and bottom edges are 17mm.

This is what the Grand S2 looks like when compared to the Blade S6.

The smartphone is assembled quite well. Of all the negative points, the only thing that can be noted is the fact that it is a little pressed back cover. Otherwise, no negative aspects of the assembly were identified during operation.

CONTROLS

Now let's look at what controls there are in this smartphone.

At the top end there is a lonely 3.5mm jack for connecting headphones.

On the right side there is a power button and a paired volume button.

At the bottom Micro USB connector and hole of the first microphone.

There are no controls on the left side.

On the back side there are: the main camera, flash, speaker and microphone hole, and a little lower the “ZTE” logo. On the right side of the cover there is a small recess for removing the latter.

On the front side there was a place for: earpiece speaker, front camera, status indicator, proximity sensor, automatic brightness control sensor. Touch buttons are located under the screen, the backlight lasts for 6 seconds, the duration of the backlight cannot be adjusted.

SCREEN

The screen in this smartphone is 5.5 inches. Resolution FullHD or 1920x1080 pixels. The pixel density at this diagonal is 401ppi. With such a density, we can say that individual pixels on the smartphone screen are completely unnoticeable.

Multitouch is standard for such matrices and amounts to 10 simultaneous touches.

Eat automatic adjustment brightness The screen is made using OGS technology, which eliminates the air gap between the glass and the touch layer. The screen responds to touches quickly, there are no delays.

The protective glass in our case is Corning Gorilla Glass 3 and it covers the entire screen area. When turned off, the screen becomes one piece, the edges of the display are not visible.

The matrix in our case is, of course, IPS, which allows us to talk about maximum tilt angles. For straight lines sun rays The image fades quite a bit, but you can read it if you want.

Among the other features of the screen, we can note the “Screen Effect” mode, which is activated in the settings. It has three points: Realism - displays natural colors, Colorful - slightly exaggerates the color gamut, Vivid - this mode is for fans of AMOLED matrices.

You can also select “Glove Mode” in the settings; when activated, the sensitivity of the touch layer increases.

Based on my personal feelings, I note that this screen does not have enough maximum brightness; the value has to be set to maximum, which has a detrimental effect on energy consumption.

For those who like to play around with the screen settings, there is an item that is responsible for blurring the background.

More detailed characteristics of the screen can be seen in the presented graphs.

As you can see, the gamma curves are quite unstable. There is a pronounced deviation from the reference curve for all colors. There may be a lack of color saturation.

But the color gamut is almost equal to the sRGB standard. This indicator allows us to say that, in general, the color rendition is correct.

The color temperature is a little far from the 6500K standard. There may be “cool” shades.

Color channels are generally stable. There is a slight lack of red color saturation.

In general, we have a very high-quality matrix and only experts can notice the shortcomings.

CAMERA

The main camera in the smartphone is 13MP from Sony IMX135 with a size of 1/3.06". They use the RGBW encoding method and support the HDR video function. RGBW technology, thanks to an additional white subpixel to the three traditional green, red and blue, allows you to increase the sensitivity of the sensor in low light conditions HDR video recording allows you to capture two exposures at once, then average them to produce an optimal image by brightening the shadows and darkening the highlights, even when shooting against a bright light source. Chinese manufacturers These are the modules that are used. There is autofocus, and it works very quickly. The built-in flash is very bright, has two levels of illumination, the first level for focusing, the second level for the shooting itself. The flash can also act as a flashlight.

Camera settings can be seen in the screenshots below:

Traditionally, I present several pictures to assess the quality of shooting:

The camera can also shoot video with maximum FullHD quality at 30 frames per second:

Front camera 2MP. It is quite enough for video communication. According to my personal feelings, the camera in this smartphone was a success. Good flash, fast autofocus, good quality video recording. All this allows us to say that this photo module remains relevant even now.

SOFT

It just so happens that the ZTE Grand S2 runs on an old version of Android OS 4.3.

The most interesting thing is that version 4.4 is only promised for it, there are not even rumors about 5.0. On this moment There are no updates, as evidenced by the information from the update program.

ZTE uses its own shell called MiFavor 2.2. At the moment, version 3.0 is already available. I had the opportunity to compare the two versions. I will say this, version 3.0 works much smoother and more stable. On version 2.2. The firmware interface is slow in places.

The main menu of the smartphone consists of three desktops with installed applications. The layout of the labels is standard and is built according to the 4x5 formula.

Widgets are installed by holding your finger on the title section of the screen for a long time. In the menu that opens, you can select applications that need to be installed on the selected desktop, you can also select wallpaper and desktop transition effects.

It is worth noting that some wallpapers installed in the firmware do not match the resolution of the smartphone screen.

You cannot completely install applications on a memory card, although you can choose the installation location, but this is only for various media content; applications are not included in this list.

The smartphone works great with memory cards up to 128GB inclusive.

The main feature of the ZTE Grand S2 is its rather advanced “gesture control” mode. By using this mode you can perform the following manipulations:

It is possible to disable incoming call or an alarm clock by simply covering the screen with your hand. The application is closed by sliding three fingers down on the screen; if you bring three fingers together, you will get a screenshot. During an incoming call, when you bring the smartphone to your ear, the call is automatically answered. When the phone is in your pocket, it will ring and vibrate at maximum volume.

In the smartphone settings, you can select a rather interesting function called “MI-POP”. Using this function, you can place it anywhere on your smartphone screen. virtual buttons management. These buttons are similar to those located below the screen.

The second one is quite interesting and useful feature in this smartphone it is a quick launch of applications. Absolutely anyone installed application You can assign your own graphic symbol for the launch. For example, we assign the letter “C” to the “camera” application; this can be not only a letter, but also any graphic symbol. Take advantage quick start You can only press the power button, then draw the required symbol on the screen and the smartphone opens the pre-defined application.

IN WORK

The ZTE Grand S2 is equipped with a quad-core processor (SoC) Qualcomm Snapdragon 801. In essence, this is still the same Snapdragon 800 only with higher frequencies, it is worth considering that this is the first revision of the 801 model and the performance is slightly lower if we take into account the processor with the MSM8974AC index .

The video processor remains the same - Adreno 330, also with slightly higher frequencies.

RAM 2GB. After the “needs” of the system, we have only a little less than 1G left at our disposal.

The declared built-in memory is 16GB. The system takes up quite a lot for the firmware and the ability to install resource-intensive applications, and in the end we only get 8GB of free space.

Synthetic performance can be assessed based on the presented graphs:

Most games are in perfect working order, but there are some incidents like Modern Combat 5.

NFS No Limits, NOVA 3 - work without problems. And as always only GTA San Andreas demonstrates a low level of performance.

The sound of the speaker in the smartphone is very loud, there is a reserve in volume, at full volume the speaker does not make any noise. Be sure that even in the noisiest place you will not miss the call. The sound in the headphones is controlled by such a parameter as " Mobile settings Dolby". When activated, you can select ready-made presets, or you can customize your own. This "improver" only works with connected headphones and does not affect the sound quality of the external speaker in any way. The smartphone has an FM radio, but as always it only works with a connected headset.

There were no problems with navigation. The smartphone is equipped with a GPS/GLONASS connection.

In my review of the ZTE Blade S6, I said that almost everything Chinese smartphones are equipped with two SIM cards, but the ZTE Grand S2 is not included in this club. This smartphone has one SIM card in micro format. You can access the network using the 4G standard, there were no problems with this connection.

Since the smartphone has two active microphones, the filtering of external noise during a conversation is very effective; the interlocutor notes excellent speech transmission. I would like to note the high volume of the earpiece, keep this in mind if you are having a private conversation.

The USB-OTG function is supported by the smartphone. So, if you have the appropriate cable, you can connect various peripherals. I connected without any problems: keyboards, mice and even a PS3 joystick.

AUTONOMOUS OPERATION

The battery in ZTE Grand S2 has a capacity of 3100 mAh. Manufactured using Li-Ion technology. This is a fairly standard indicator for smartphones with similar characteristics, however, there are copies with a smaller capacity, for example in Samsung Galaxy S5 battery 2800 mAh.

Here's what I got in terms of energy consumption:

1. Playing a video clip in 720p resolution, screen brightness at 50%, sound at 75% - 8 hours.

2. Work in 3D applications - 5 hours.

3. MP3 file playback in headphones - 60 hours.

4. In "phone only" mode - 56 hours.

5. Mixed cycle work: games, Internet, music, calls, video - 16 hours.

I compared the data with the Samsung Galaxy S5 and it turned out that when playing videos and in 3D applications, the smartphone from the Korean manufacturer shows a slightly longer time battery life and here it most likely affects better optimization by energy consumption. In other modes, ZTE Grand S2 is the leader.

CONCLUSIONS

Actually, this is how the ZTE Grand S2 turned out. This begs only one question: -Where have you been all this time? The Snapdragon 805 is already in full use, and the 810 version is coming. And against all this background of progress, ZTE Grand S2 seems like an old man. The deciding factor in the market, as always, will be price. If the price tag is below 20 thousand rubles, then this smartphone will have some chances, but as always, the Asus PadFone S with a price of less than 18-17 thousand rubles is spinning in my head.

PROS:

1. High-quality screen.

2. Loud speaker.

3. Good camera.

4. Powerful flash.

5. Sufficient performance.

MINUSES:

1. Morally outdated.

2. Completely plastic case, the back cover is pressed through.

3. Outdated Android version OS.

Let me finish here this review. I hope this article will help you do right choice. Thank you to those who took the time to read. of this material. Special thanks to ZTE for providing the smartphone for review.

Good luck to everyone and see you again!

How to update the software?

We provide you different ways software updates, namely: updating using a memory card or updating over the air.

To update over the air, you need to connect to a Wi-Fi wireless network or GSM Internet connection and check for updates in the settings.

What should I do if the operating time of the device does not coincide with the operating time declared by the manufacturer?

Smartphone is complicated electronic device, which includes the functions of a pocket computer and cell phone and consumes a large amount of energy to operate these functions. Most of the energy is spent on work display module and GSM transceiver path. The display brightness is automatically set to maximum in very bright environments (sunny day) or set by the user to manual mode. Maximum brightness consumes maximum energy. At GSM operation and with stable and stable reception “at maximum”, the device consumes a minimum amount of energy to maintain communication. In case of unstable and weak signal network, the device requires more power to maintain communication. In the case of “Network Search” in an area where there is no network, the device consumes the maximum amount of energy, which is spent on searching for nearby base stations. To reduce your phone's energy consumption you need to:

1. Disable GPS if not required.

2. Disable Mobile Internet if it's not needed.

3. Disable or delete unnecessary unused applications, because they are active and consume internal resources apparatus.

What should you do if your phone freezes, won’t turn on, or reboots?

The cause of rebooting or freezing in most cases is third-party software or programs.

1. Initially, we recommend that you restore the default factory settings (after saving the information you need). If the phone turns on, select the "factory reset" option from the device menu. If the device does not turn on, turn on the device in "Recovery mode" and select "wipe data/factory reset". The method for entering “Recovery mode” is described below in the paragraph “How to enter Recovery mode?”.

2. If resetting to factory settings does not help, update the software. Methods for updating the software are described in the paragraph "How to update the software?".

3. If the software update does not help, contact your nearest Authorized Service center ZTE.

How to make a backup of data, a notebook or a “Back-up”?

There are 3 ways to do a “Back Up”:

1. In the phone settings, in the "Backup and reset" submenu, check the box for recovery.

2. You can transfer the necessary information to your computer using USB cable.

3. You can make a “Back Up” using a third-party program.

What should I do if I don’t remember the password or pattern to unlock the screen?

If you forgot your pattern key or digital password To unlock the screen, you need to perform a factory reset procedure: 1. Turn on the device in “Recovery mode” and select “wipe data/factory reset”. 2. If the procedure is not completed, you must contact the ZTE Authorized Service Center.

How to use wireless networks (Wi-Fi, BT)?

1. In the device settings, turn on Wi-Fi. Click on the Wi-Fi icon and you will be taken to the Wi-Fi network management screen.

2. The device will automatically start searching for active Wi-Fi networks in the access zone from 5 to 50 meters to the access point (depending on the power of the access point).

3. Select the network you need and click on it. If wireless network is protected by a password, please enter it.

4. After connecting to the desired network The Wi-Fi icon will appear on the main screen of the device.

How to enable Internet distribution on your phone (USB modem or WiFi router)?

There are two ways to enable Internet sharing on your phone. The first way is to enable distribution as a USB modem, the other is to enable distribution as a WiFi router. Make sure that your device has access to the Internet in order to distribute it:

1. USB modem - this method is used to distribute the Internet to a computer. Connect your phone to your computer using a USB cable and allow data access. "Settings->Wireless networks->More" Modem mode - check the USB modem box." Then the phone will start distributing the Internet to the computer. To stop the distribution, uncheck the USB modem or simply disconnect the cable connection.

2. WiFi router - make sure you have it stable internet connections via mobile network or USB. "Settings->Wireless networks->More" Modem mode - check the "WiFI access point" box. For guard wireless connection tap the hotspot icon then tap "Hotspot" WiFi access". In this menu you can set a name and password for your wireless WiFi connection. Your phone will start working as a WiFi router. To stop distribution, uncheck the "WiFi router"

How can I quickly see the charging status?

During charging, press the power button. The battery charge status will be shown on the main screen of the phone.

Why is the amount of free memory on the device less than stated by the manufacturer?

Unlike the processor, which has its own built-in memory, other devices, such as a video processor, audio processor and other devices included in the elemental base of the device’s central board, consume user memory resources. A certain amount of memory is reserved in advance for internal needs, but in case of overflow, user memory is used.

What types of device locking can be used?

There are 3 types of screen lock. Select one of the lock types in Settings -> Security -> Screen lock.

1. Blocking graphic key

2.PIN code lock 3.Password lock

What is the operating temperature ZTE phones?
