Reviews of the Canon PIXMA iP7240 printer. Canon Pixma iP7240 inkjet printer: description, characteristics, reviews Which segment of the printer market is the hero of this review aimed at?

It seems Pixma iP7240 After all, they made a replacement; preliminary information about Model TS704 is available in our review

Afterword from 2016:

Model Pixma iP7240 turned out to be an impressive long-liver. Taking into account the rapid change of generations of printer and MFP models from Canon, this is very unusual. But, nevertheless, the model turned out to be quite tolerable, and at the beginning of 2016 there are still sufficient offers in stores. The price range ranges from 5,000 to 6,000 rubles.

The main drawback of the model, as predicted, lies in the area of paper capture and microscopic cartridges. These shortcomings apply to all modern “home” models of printers and MFPs from Canon. A set of regular non-starter cartridges costs the same as a new device. Starter cartridges, of course, can be refilled, but their 4-5 ml capacity is depressing. There are also spare parts on the market for these models, but the kit is even more expensive than the printer. Although for many, style and beautiful plastic are really closer to their hearts than the “box-like” design of Epson print factories.

Further, we were reproached that the pixma ip7240 review with the photographs provided was a fake. We can only regret that people have not seen truly high-quality photo printing on inkjet printers. This is a completely normal result for modern devices print. Of course, we can find those photos in which this model “screws up” completely. An unsightly large raster will crawl out, the colors will disappear into the dirt, and so on and so forth. But this is an amateur model; usually bright standard photographs are printed on such printers. It is from this point of view that the photographs for the tests were chosen.

Now the main question is: is this model worth buying? Our opinion is that it is worth waiting until the announcement of ruble prices for printing factories from Canon. It is quite possible that this printer with a set of spare parts will cost the same as new solutions from Canon. Well, or, as an option, on the eve of the release of new models, warehouses may be cleared, there is a chance to buy Pixma iP7240 at pre-crisis prices.

ip7240 review from 2012:

PIXMA iP7240 printer review:

Only the lazy do not “surf” on the wave of success of “Apple” products. So printer manufacturers have not left aside the most popular trend of the year.

The familiar printer models were urgently rebranded, and devices were released that support direct printing from modern smartphones, tablets, etc.

At first, MFPs acquired this function, and after some time, inexpensive printer models.

Oddly enough, the last place in this race was taken by Canon with the model PIXMA iP7240. In addition, we had to wait more than two months for the printer announced on the website to appear on sale.

But, while re-reading the printer specification, we came across a number of interesting points that made us want to take this model for testing.

So, although the manufacturer does not hide the fact that this is a replacement model PIXMA 4840/4940, the description reveals a couple of interesting points.

First: the manufacturer writes “low-profile design,” and, judging by the specifications, this is indeed the case (it was 431x297x153 mm, now it is 451x368x128 mm). And if you look even more closely, it will become clear: the printer was simply “flattened”, and the decrease in height caused an increase in other overall dimensions. This means that, most likely, to a greater or lesser extent it could not have happened without changing the kinematic scheme.

Second: support for XL cartridges is announced. What is XL? Are these the old regular volumes with new letters? Or have the cartridges really become larger and heavier? And how did this affect the service life of the mechanics? And won’t printing with original consumables actually become more affordable?

All these questions forced us to test the new product from Canon.

First impressions:

So, the printer comes in a box that looks more like packaging for a laptop than a printer.

Let's unpack... The first thing that catches your eye: yes, the printer, of course, has become low-profile, but visually it spreads out too much to the sides. Even the Epson L800 “tractor” looks more compact.

Cartridges... Well, it’s better we show everything close-up. True, of course, there is also an XL version, but it’s also not particularly pleasing with its volume.

In addition, the paper feeding system has been completely redesigned. Now there are two feed cassettes. One is for thick photo paper 10x15 or 13x18, the second is for regular, less dense types.

Alas, there is no ordinary “feeder”. Therefore, for example, it is impossible to print a 20x30 cm photograph or a 20*60 cm banner on this photo printer. Only standard sheets of photo paper in A4 format. For those who are not aware, 20*30 and A4 are different paper sizes.

Although, of course, the device will fit perfectly into the interior of low shelves and will be an excellent complement to stylish “Apple” products. By the way, the CD/DVD printing tray is hidden under the photo paper cassette. You won't find it right away :)

On the back of the printer there is a duplex mechanism. If a paper jam occurs, you will have to “pick out” the device from low shelves and fix the problem.

Next, the print head is already installed in the printer. And, most likely, it is tested at the factory. This is indirectly evidenced by traces of ink on the cap. Of course, tests are good, but the sealed storage packaging, like in previous printers, was much better.

The print head is removable, the fastening mechanism has been changed: to reduce the height, now the lever must not be tilted up, but pulled towards you.

Visual differences seem to be fine.

What's in the bottom line:

  1. The printer became low-profile, but spread out quite a lot to the sides.
  2. To accommodate the fashion for thin products, the printer was deprived of a standard paper feed mechanism, which will be very critical for many.
  3. The game of words and consoles like XL remains a game, there are no fundamental improvements.

So, let's move on to testing print quality.

First of all, text printing: a separate pigment cartridge is provided for this. In addition to it, the printer is equipped with a duplex mechanism, i.e., automatic printing of double-sided documents. And using a special black pigment cartridge, printing is carried out both in single-sided and double-sided mode.

The printer prints quite quickly, but if you set it to print on both sides, the sheet will dry for several seconds on the back side before printing each page.

This reduces all the speed performance of the Canon Pixma iP7240 printer to nothing, although the function itself is very convenient, however, if you have enough time to print documents.

Now about the sad thing: currently, when using office papers, the quality of text printing on inkjet printers does not reach “laser” clarity and smoothness.

The letters come out slightly loose.

The text, although made in pigment black, has poor mechanical resistance to wet hands. If you run a wet finger over the text, you get a clear “smudge.”

Unfortunately, this is a feature of all thermal inkjet printers. If you need increased abrasion resistance with wet hands when inkjet printing, it is better to pay attention to Epson products.

Overall for home use print quality text documents should be considered satisfactory. And the presence of automatic duplex makes the process also convenient.

Now about the quality of photo printing.

Although any significant changes in the performance characteristics of the printer Canon Pixma iP7240 compared to more early models are absent, however, there are improvements, and they are of a consumer nature. This model equipped with two paper cassettes.

Now you can put photo paper of 10 x 15 cm or 13 x 18 cm in one of them, and A4 in the other and, without constantly running to the printer, send photographs of two types for printing.

We will conduct research on the quality of photo printing on the two most affordable and high-quality photo papers.

First up is Epson Premium Glossy Photo Paper.

The paper is quite widely distributed on sale and is found in economical PRO packs. Available in three sizes suitable for this printer: 10x15 cm, 13x18 cm and A4.

The paper is very batch stable and has good color gamut performance.

Secondly, this is Lomond Semi Glossy Bright 1103301, 260 g/m2.

The paper stands out against the background of “classmates” good parameters layer for your price group. And also widespread availability throughout the country.

Unfortunately, paper is presented only with a semi-glossy type of coating, which most closely replicates the “matte” type in mini-labs

This photo paper is available in A4 sheets and 10 x 15 cm format. Also, the 10 x 15 cm format is found in economical PRO packs.

For these types of photo paper, the printer was profiled using original ink cartridges.

Printer driver settings for profiling are shown in the screenshots.

You can download profiles for these two types of paper

Below are comparative graphs of color gamuts of photo papers on the printer Canon Pixma iP7240 using original cartridges.

The graphs are shown for L = 80, L = 50, L = 30, L = 15. Epson photo paper – green graph. Lomond photo paper – white graphic.

Both types of paper performed very well. And can be recommended for use as an alternative original Canon Pro Platinum.

Epson Premium Glossy Photo Paper produces truer whites and possibly better long-term print durability.

Lomond Semi Glossy Bright photo paper is quite affordable and is in no way inferior to Epson Premium Glossy in terms of color gamut.

In general, prints on both types of photo paper are distinguished by rich colors and good b/w wedge in daylight.

I would also like to dwell on the “trick” of this printer – direct printing from smartphones. With this printing mode, profiles cannot be used, but nevertheless, the photo papers chosen for the test coped with the task perfectly.

Only the black and white wedge caused criticism, although it was quite good for amateur use.

About the gas station

Of course, in the civilized world it is quite difficult to imagine the owner of a top-end tablet from Apple pouring ink into cartridges. But Russia is a country of paradoxes, and here an iPad in the maximum configuration and ink for refilling cartridges can easily coexist on the same table.

In any case, in Russia an inkjet printer is primarily associated with the word “ink”, and not “cartridges”.

For printer Canon Pixma iP7240 DCTec recommends using the standard set for these series.

Below are the results of testing these inks in the printer iP7240: they were poured into starter cartridges using the “classical” method. Before refilling, the cartridge absorber was washed of original ink to ensure the correctness of the measurement results. And the print head was flushed with DCTec washing to eliminate the influence of the original ink on the result.

Starter cartridges are quite “gentle”; when removing or drilling the ball, you should not use excessive force.

Below are comparison graphs of coverage using original and DCTec inks on Epson Premium Glossy Photo Paper and Lomond Semi Glossy Bright.

Results for Lomond Semi Glossy Bright photo paper. Graphs are shown for L = 80, L = 50, L = 30, L = 15. White graph - DCTec ink. The red graph is the original ink.

APPEARANCE

The Canon PIXMA iP7240 printer seems to be created to be discreetly stored somewhere on a shelf, waiting for its finest hour. Its appearance carefully hides its belonging to printing devices, and indeed to any devices, for that matter.

Without instructions, it is impossible to understand that this is a printer; rather, the Canon PIXMA iP7240 can be mistaken for a media player. We know that a printer must have a paper input tray and a paper output tray. An opening lid for installing cartridges, after all. You won’t find any of this on the Canon PIXMA iP7240 until you start feeling it with your hands.

Although, due to the abundance of glossy inserts in the surface, it is not recommended to touch it with your hands - fingerprints on the case remain very noticeable. And in general, dust sticks to these inserts very actively, which does not quite suit its image of an “inconspicuous box on a shelf.”

The Canon PIXMA iP7240 has carefully removed all the most important things inside itself and is in no hurry to reveal its secrets without instructions. Even the buttons are reliably disguised as design elements. There are only four buttons, three on the left and one on the right. The one on the right is mechanical, and its only function is to push out the tray to eject images. Moreover, if you decide to start printing without pressing this button, the tray will recline on its own. The three buttons on the left already have deeper functionality. Under the power on/off button is a universal button for communicating with the printer (you press it if paper is stuck, if it’s time to change the cartridge, if the paper is out, and many other “ifs”). And even lower I found round button to connect the printer to Wi-Fi networks.

There are two paper trays hidden at the very bottom of the printer. The one slightly higher is designed for photo paper in small but popular formats - 5x7 inches (13x18 centimeters) or 4x6 inches (10x15 centimeters). You can insert a disk into it, but from the bottom side, for direct printing on its surface. The lower “cassette” is more versatile; you can insert all popular formats into it, up to A4, and it can hold up to 125 sheets. Thanks to this solution, you won’t have to constantly change paper if you alternate between printing abstracts on plain paper and printing photographs on small-format photo paper.

The printer has no other active elements - no screen, no card reader, no USB port for connecting the camera directly. Perhaps, for a home printer, which is the Canon PIXMA iP7240, these additions are not really needed.

In general, no matter how you look at it, the printer seems to be designed to stand peacefully in a corner, not take up extra space and not attract unnecessary attention. The flat, rectangular design makes it easy to fit into any space, and the lid will soon start to accumulate papers or decorative items like stuffed animals, whether you like it or not. The wireless technologies with which the printer is packed will allow you to get by with one single power cord, and two trays will allow you not to get up too often to change plain paper for a photo.

PRINTER IN WORK

The Canon PIXMA iP7240 printer, like most new Canon printers, has the ability to connect as traditionally USB cable, and via Wi-Fi. Initial installation drivers took about half an hour, but after that the printer, connecting to the home wireless network, detected without problems on all my computers and laptops. Moreover, it automatically became the default printer, which surprised me a lot. Connecting to a Wi-Fi network is possible either by explicitly specifying the necessary settings (for this the printer will need to be connected to the computer once), or by using WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) technology, which boils down to sequentially pressing the corresponding buttons on the router and printer .

For owners mobile devices iOS or Android also offers wireless printing. Owners of iPhones and iPads can print pictures using the airPrint technology built into their devices, support for which is fully implemented in the printer, and owners of mobile devices on Android will need to download the Canon Easy-PhotoPrint program, available for free on Google Play.

When printing, the PIXMA iP7240 finally shines. The print cannot be called silent, but there are practically no vibrations from it. After printing is complete, the printer runs the print head for some time and demonstrates in every possible way that it is ready to print again and again. But having calmed down and realizing that there will be no more jobs, the printer stops making any sounds, until the next print.

PAPER

The paper in the printer is distributed into two “cassettes”. The top one is for popular photo formats (10x15 cm or 13x18 cm), the bottom one is for everything else (A4, A5, B5, Letter, Legal, envelopes, 20 x 25 cm). To adjust the paper size, guides are used, which are fixed in positions corresponding to popular formats. The fixation of the pages is so clear that for the sake of experiment, I sent one page of text to be printed twice on the same sheet of paper. The result exceeded expectations - the letters completely coincided in both attempts.

It would be worth mentioning that the printer supports two-sided printing - one single checkbox in the settings will save on paper and will allow you not to get up once again to turn the sheets over and insert them the other way: having printed one side of the page, the printer sucks it back and immediately prints it on reverse

In total, the lower cassette will hold 125 pages of plain A4 paper. The top compartment will hold much less - only about 20 sheets.

INK

Under the top cover is the heart of the printer - the print head and ink tanks. The Canon PIXMA iP7240 has five of them: three color and two black (one black cartridge for printing photos, the other for text). The one that uses pigment-based ink for texts, which works great when printed on regular paper. The remaining four (three colors, magenta, yellow and cyan, as well as photo black) are made based on Canon Chromalife 100+ technology, which ensures bright and rich color and longevity of prints in their original form, especially when printed on special Canon photo paper. Ink tanks are replaced individually, which should increase the efficiency of their use.

However, in a system of three color cartridges, the savings are not so obvious, because all colors are consumed approximately equally. The blue one ran out the fastest; its resource was enough for 40 A4 photographs taken in high quality. Almost immediately, after just a couple of photos, they asked for a replacement for purple and yellow. Ink tanks that require replacement blink invitingly in red as soon as you lift the lid. Those that are running out, but are still alive, also blink, but less often, it is impossible to make a mistake. Ink tanks are available in two sizes - regular and XL. As the name suggests, XL ink tanks will last you about twice as long as the regular ones I used.

By the way, be careful not to get dirty when you start installing new ink tanks. After installing the first two, I noticed that my thumbs turned purple/blue. By the time I installed the yellow color, I became a little smarter.

The FINE print head system, which is also used in more advanced Canon printer models, is responsible for print speed and quality. Thanks to the scientific developments of the Japanese, it is impossible to detect graininess in photographs of the Pixma iP7240 even with a good magnifying glass. And this while maintaining decent printing speed. One A4 photo at maximum quality is printed in approximately 1 minute and 35 seconds. 10x15 pictures with a simpler quality and completely “fly out” in 25-30 seconds. Printing black and white text on plain paper is almost imperceptible.

PRINT QUALITY AND CONCLUSIONS

For a home printer that will mainly print small event photos, the Canon PIXMA iP7240 showed very good print quality. You won’t find any graininess, even if you try very hard, and otherwise the printed pictures look very vibrant and pleasant.

CONCLUSIONS

Jet Canon printer The PIXMA iP7240 is perfect for light-duty printing at home. Most likely, the buyer of this model will print various documents and vacation photos in approximately equal proportions. You probably won’t be able to print books of a couple of hundred A4 pages on it, just as you wouldn’t be able to print a hundred photographs from your own wedding on it, but for the needs of an ordinary family that needs an inexpensive photo printer, it will be just right.

The closed and flat design of the printer allows you to place it somewhere on a shelf where it will not be in the way. Built-in wireless technologies will help minimize the number of wires, and two trays for different types paper will allow you not to think twice about it when, while leisurely flipping through photos on your tablet, you suddenly want to send one of the pictures for printing.

At the same time, the quality of the photographs is quite comparable to what is offered by budget darkrooms, and there is absolutely no shame in capturing some family moment, immediately printing it out and hanging it on the wall. Or, having brought friends home, casually show a photo album and say: “we flew to Barcelona that weekend, it’s beautiful, isn’t it?”

It prints better photos if you install the XPS driver!

He will ruin you on cartridges. All these printers are a stupid scam for money. Manufacturers make profits not from the sale of printers, but from the subsequent sale of branded cartridges. Moreover, you won’t be able to install left-handed or refillable cartridges, don’t even dream about it. Everything is chipped, with the wrong cartridges, the printer will be slow and glitchy.

Yandex Market

I used alternative Burstein slam-shut caps with OCP inks. Quite quickly problems began with mixing colors. Magenta was mixed with cyan and after being idle for 1 day, it had to be cleaned at least twice before the first print. Replacing the cartridges did not help, and then the nozzles in the head partially failed. It is possible that if I had used original consumables, all this would not have happened, but the costs for them would have been many times higher than all my manipulations with alternative components.

The printer is super, no words...

About the service: I never expected that there would be no additional shipping costs. The Pick Point service turned out to be very convenient for me. And in general, the whole chain - from order to execution - is amazing.

In general, the model as a whole is not bad for the money. I struggled a bit with the Wi-Fi setup, which is why I bought the printer. And even at one point I regretted the purchase, realizing that I wouldn’t be able to set it up. But one day he simply began to work through the air without additional intervention. So everything is fine now. The printer is very noisy and slow-witted. I read other reviews and laughed about the slowness :) It’s all true. Printing “quickly” will not work. It will take a long time to turn on, set up before printing, etc. It will definitely wake someone up at night, so it’s better to use it during the day. But if you’re not in a hurry, it’s quite satisfactory. The best option I found is to turn on the printer in advance, then it will be faster to think about. In order not to go broke on cartridges, I advise you to purchase an additional set of refillable cartridges and keep them ready. Then suddenly running out of ink will not be an unpleasant surprise. Original cartridges are also easily refilled without any additional equipment. I always have one set in reserve. You need to experiment with ink and photo paper and find the right ratio so that the pictures do not fade over time.

This is certainly not laser printer, but how slow it works.... After turning it on, it starts to set up, it takes about 5 minutes. Then, when you have chosen what you want to print, it will think for another 3 minutes before starting to print. The printing process itself is fast, but these intervals between the start of printing and the completion of the work... you will print 1 sheet for a total of 10 minutes, because while it turns on, then it will think, then it will think again, then it will print, then turn off 3 minutes... I still don’t understand the principle of its operation: if you need to print several sheets, it can print them instantly, or after printing 1 sheet, think for a couple of minutes, print 2 sheets, think again... although nothing complicated or colorful I'm not typing. By the way, after printing 2 color A4 sheets, the amount of ALL ink dropped by almost 40%. Although I printed a blue-red-black design. And then, not a drawing, but a drawing. Not for frequent use. Otherwise you will finish it off yourself))) Very expensive cartridges. The full set will cost the same as the printer itself. And if you often print color images, then get ready to change cartridges once a season

In the world of home printing today, MFPs rule the roost - multifunctional devices, which are a printer-copier-scanner in one bottle. Against the backdrop of their rapid development, classic printers seem not so efficient and no longer particularly attractive for purchase. In reality, everything is completely different. The majority of users do not need the rich capabilities of MFPs at all. The copier has long become a professional tool, in demand only among large companies, and a scanner at home can easily be replaced by a smartphone camera. The only device that everyone (students, managers, individual entrepreneurs) still need is a printer. In addition, such a purchase is a more profitable investment, since you will not overpay for printing capabilities and technologies that you do not need. Most likely, some innovations will not be useful at all in everyday life (you don’t scan stacks of documents every day, do you?). Thus, we come to the conclusion that it is better to focus your attention on an inexpensive and monofunctional device. One of these will be discussed in today’s review. Meet the Canon Pixma iP7240 inkjet printer.

Design and construction

One of the most important advantages of printers, which is not part of the MFP, is compactness. Such devices are easier to fit in small apartments. Thanks to the low-profile design of the Pixma iP7240, it can easily be placed on a shelf with low ceilings. Canon also took care of the aesthetic component. The Canon Pixma iP7240 body is made of matte black plastic. The printer looks solid and stylish. The number of controls is minimal, everything is done for the sake of simplicity and asceticism. A glossy panel is installed around the perimeter of the lid, giving the device elegance.

The Pixma iP7240 printer has 2 paper cassettes. One of them (the top one) is loaded with photo paper (10 by 15 and 13 by 18 centimeters). The second (bottom) is loaded with plain paper (sheets A4, A5, B5 and other popular formats). Each cassette is equipped with a specialized clamp that tightly holds the paper during printing, preventing it from slipping away and blurring the image. You can even do an experiment. Load one sheet of paper twice and see with your own eyes how the printer reprints the image with pixel accuracy.

Ink

Just under the printer cover are the ink tanks and the print head. Pixma iP7240 is equipped with 5 ink tanks at once. Among them: two black - one with pigment paint, and the other with regular paint, three colored (with blue paint, yellow and purple). Color ink and photo black paint are made using Canon Chromalife technology. The manufacturer does not disclose the specifics of the technology, but confidently declares an increase in the quality of printing on photo paper. This is especially true in the case of paper from Canon. Pigment ink is needed for printing on plain paper.

Ink on the Pixma iP7240 can be replaced individually without replacing the entire tray. This approach allows you to reduce the cost of consumables. The life of a standard ink tank is enough for about 40 photographs in A4 format. This is the number of pictures that blue ink is enough for. If the ink is running low, the LED on the ink tanks begins to blink (the fewer consumables, the higher the blinking frequency). If necessary, you can buy larger ink tanks. They are marked with the article XL, are more expensive and take longer to consume.

Handling paper and discs

It was already said above that the printer is equipped with two paper cassettes and a stable mechanism for fixing it. It would be useful to say that the printer supports two-sided printing technology - Auto Duplex Print. If this option is enabled, the next page of the document will be printed on the reverse side of the sheet. Printer in automatic mode re-sucks a sheet of paper. No user intervention is required.

During the printing process and absorbing paper, the printer makes a lot of noise, but does not make the table on which it stands shake. Vibration during operation is minimal.

The Canon Pixma iP7240 can print not only on paper and photo paper, but also on CDs. Software for the corresponding prints is included with the printer.

Wireless printing

The main advantage of any modern printer is the ability to print documents and photographs without a physical connection to a computer. For this function to work, you will have to install the bundled drivers, which will take a lot of time to set up. But the programmers did their best; the printer is easily detected on any computer and smartphone. The printer can be connected to a Wi-Fi router by manually entering connection information (via a computer). You can use WPS technology if your router supports it.

Software

Canon printers come with several CDs with software. Canon programmers have developed two programs for processing and printing photographs. The first program is My Image Garden. This utility is a tool for creating photo collections, sorting pictures and creating collages. With it, you can apply filters to photos in the style of Instagram. There is a function to “blur” the background, increase the brightness and sharpness of pictures.

My Image Garden turns your photos into beautiful collages and calendars (there are other types of printable templates too). While scanning a photo library, the utility recognizes faces and objects, sorting them into separate albums. In theory, this means that once you feed the program your photo library, it can instantly find all the photos of your friends or even your dog. The program has a complex interface, and some operations are performed one at a time, so it will take time to get used to the utility, but it is worth it.

The second program is Print Your Days. The essence of the program is the same. Artificial intelligence scans a library of images. Categorizes them by date, persons and events. Then he creates a collage and prints it out. The main difference is the source of the photos and the simplicity of the interface. The utility is much more modest in terms of capabilities and collects photos from social network Facebook. For those who often post pictures there, Print Your Days will come in handy.

Print quality and speed

The Canon Pixma iP7240 printer is equipped with a FINE print head. This mechanism is responsible for the quality of prints and the speed of printing. The efforts of Japanese engineers were not in vain. The printer is capable of printing one glossy photo in 20-30 seconds. An ordinary black and white document “pops” out of the printer almost instantly. The photographs come out rich and vibrant. The color rendition of the printer is realistic and deep. There is noticeable slight tuning on the part of the printer, which makes the photographs more pleasant for ordinary people. Those who like to process images before printing should moderate their ardor and not push up the contrast and curved lines of some colors. Small flaws are almost invisible. The image clarity is impressive, with no grain or pixelation visible at all.
