Literally in May, affordable new products were presented from a well-known manufacturer of modern mobile gadgets on the Asian market - ZTE. We are talking about smartphones such as ZTE nubia Z11 and ZTE nubia Z11 mini, which has already been announced. Traditionally, many manufacturers do not limit themselves to a smaller version of the basic device, so already in June an enlarged version was presented - ZTE nubia Z11 Max, which received a six-inch screen and will be available after the base 5.5-inch Z11.

Phablet design

If you look at the wide-inch gadget, it’s not difficult to trace the iPhone-like trend that almost all the world’s manufacturers have adopted. And I must say that this is pleasing: after all, we have before us a beautiful gadget in a stylish metal frame. The AMOLED display has a resolution of 1080x1920 pixels, while it occupies 75 percent of the front panel area. The front panel itself is protected by durable third-generation Gorilla glass. Looking at the front panel, what catches your eye is the home button, which is highlighted with a red circle, creating a sharp contrast against a silver, gray or gold background.

At the back, the same red frame highlights the camera lens, just below which you can see a dual-tone flash and a fingerprint sensor that unlocks the device with a fingerprint. The edges are rounded; on the lower part, on the sides of the charging socket, you can see the speaker holes. Design ZTE Nubia Z11 Max– not new, although it differs in certain features that give the device a certain authenticity. In addition, the device has a rather thin body (7.4 mm), while it houses a capacious battery.

Tablet filling

Considering that the smartphone received a Snapedragon 652 series and advanced Adreno 510 graphics, the user gets a very fast phablet. The memory performance is also encouraging: permanent storage – 64 gigabytes, RAM – 4. Another plus is the expansion slot for microSD cards, however, it is available if you sacrifice the second SIM card. As already noted, the device received a decent battery with a capacity of 4000 mAh. This supports the function fast charging and the device is capable of scoring 83 percent in just half an hour. The camera is also pleasing: pictures are taken with a sixteen-megapixel module protected by sapphire glass. The smartphone has many competitors.

  1. Z11 - flagship with Snapdragon 820 processor
  2. Z11 Mini is a mid-range device powered by Snapdragon 617
  3. Z11 Max is a mid-range device with Snapdragon 652
  4. Z11 Max is a mid-range device based on MediaTek Helio P10
will hit the international market soon and the Z11 Mini will launch in India in October, but there's no word on the Z11 Max. However, it is the smartphone powered by the MediaTek Helio processor that will be considered in this review.

The 6-inch tablet comes in two versions and will cost from $290 in China. With the Z11 Max, Nubia is going to compete with tablet phones from Huawei and Lenovo. While ZTE has touted its flagship Axon 7, the Nubia brand is less well known. Let's see if the Z11 Max can leave a favorable impression.

Nubia Z11 Max Package Contents

Nubia Z11 Max is positioned as a premium mid-range smartphone. The packaging uses a soft finish and the developers paid considerable attention to its design. The outside is all black with a gold border around the Nubia logo, and the inside of the box is gold. Keep it minimalistic, the matte finish and color combination gives it a premium feel.

There is nothing special inside the packaging itself. There is a smartphone, cable, charger, sticker and user manual. No headphones, extra connectors or protective materials.

Components and design

The Z11 Max has a high-quality design and minimal bezels around the edges of the screen, which makes the device even more attractive. The metal body has a high-end finish and gives the smartphone the feel of a high-end device. Despite the 6-inch screen, the smartphone fits in your pocket.

The review considered an option with a gold case, not too bright. There are also silver and gray options. The anodized metal is processed perfectly, there are no irregularities or dents. The rounded corners are reminiscent of appearance iPhone smartphone.

The Z11 Max has rounded edges along the entire length of the body and is very comfortable to hold in your hands. Even despite its large size, it is comfortable to operate with one hand, although it is difficult to reach the far edge. The front uses Gorilla Glass 3 with a 2.5D curve, where there are three capacitive buttons on the bottom, an 8MP camera on the top, and a distance and ambient light sensor. Capacitive Home button It can light up when notifications arrive or stay on constantly.

At the back there is a 13 megapixel camera with dual LED flash, a fingerprint scanner and Nubia inscription. There is a 3.5 mm headphone jack, USB connector type C at the bottom. At the bottom there are speakers hidden by a grille. Overall the device looks great and the build quality is also excellent.

Screen

The screen of the device also does not disappoint - the AMOLED panel offers rich colors from edge to edge. The resolution of the 6-inch screen is 1920 x 1080, pixel density 368 ppi. This is a high-end screen, but those who prefer more natural colors may be disappointed with the color reproduction, since it is somewhat oversaturated with AMOLED.

In everyday use, viewing angles are wide, as is visibility in open spaces. Even under the rays of the sun, the contents of the screen are clearly visible and the colors do not appear washed out, as on most LCD displays. Nubia has a number of additional settings to adjust color rendering and color temperature. The standard configuration is closer to the warm spectrum, but those who prefer bright white can use the calibration settings to select the desired level.

Audio and call quality

The Nubia's speaker is located at the bottom and can be covered by hand when the device is held in landscape mode. This is the only sound issue this device has. The volume and sound quality when talking on the phone are at a good level, the microphone also copes with its task.

Using headphones, the user receives clear sound and volume greater than that of the recently released model. The Z11 Max has a Dolby Digital Plus setting that changes the output according to preset profiles such as music, movies, games or voice. You can also change options manually using the equalizer, volume and dialogue enhancer. This feature works well when watching videos and listening to music.

Z11 Max has a built-in flash memory of 64 GB and a card slot microSD memory, which, together with the sound quality, makes it suitable for lovers of multimedia content on mobile devices.

Camera

The Standard Edition of the Nubia Z11 Max smartphone has a rear camera with a resolution of 13 megapixels and an aperture of f/2.0, a front camera of 8 megapixels and an aperture of f/2.4, and viewing angles of the lenses are equal to 80 degrees. Both cameras do a good job of capturing images in automatic mode and have a good shutter speed for a device in its price category.

Nubia has added quite a few software tricks to the camera app, including a slow-motion video mode. The photos you take look great on the AMOLED screen, but the picture looks different on other displays, which is a bit disappointing.

The quality of photos from the rear camera is most often not satisfactory; they are clear, bright and saturated. Low-light images are a mixed bag, depending on your luck, but the level of detail drops off. Sometimes there is a lot of noise in the photos, sometimes the quality is not bad for publishing on Instagram or other social networks.

The 8 MP front camera produces blurrier images. While it performs well in low light and retains most colors, it could use a little more clarity.

The video quality from the rear camera in day and night scenes is at a high level. Recorded audio is slightly muffled, which is normal for this price.

Video recording while driving doesn't disappoint and the shaking isn't as bad as you might expect. The video quality can ultimately be considered acceptable.

In general, the cameras can be called good, although the front one lacks clarity.

Software

This is the section where the Z11 Max starts to lose its appeal. The smartphone runs on Android system 5.1.1 Lollipop is two years old, although the device was presented several months ago. It has the latest Android security updates, but that's about it. At the same time, the regular Z11 comes out in . Nubia doesn't promise to update the Z11 Max, so you can't count on a more modern Android.

Nubia has placed its own skin on top of the system called Nubia UI 4.0.0, which is reminiscent of MIUI from , only not half as good. Her style is inconsistent across different sections of the system, and she lacks a sense of completion. Developers have a lot to work on in the future when improving the shell if Nubia is going to conquer the international market.

Since the model under review was imported from China, the device did not support English (not to mention Russian). The system displayed quite a few error messages and interface tips in Chinese that were completely incomprehensible. Information about system updates was also displayed in Chinese.

In addition to the language, the downside is the pre-installed applications (bloatware) such as the browser and search application, which periodically sent notifications. In general, the shell and application interface from Nubia do not offer the same high level of sophistication as that of MIUI. When the device is sold in other countries, local applications will most likely be used.

Despite the problematic shell, if you wish, you can find another third-party firmware and switch to it. Otherwise, the system works stably and quickly, although external shortcomings do not allow us to be satisfied with its capabilities.

Performance Nubia Z11 Max

Nubia Z11 Max is sold in two versions:
  1. MediaTek Helio P10 octa-core processor with 1.8 GHz and 3 GB RAM(Standard Edition)
  2. 1.8 GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 processor and 4 GB RAM
This review focuses on the Standard Edition. The processor is enough to work simultaneously with several applications and for games. 3 GB of memory is enough not to close applications in background and so that they do not slow down the device.

The device turned out to be responsive in any operating mode; there is no need to complain about the speed of movement through the interface. Applications used included Office, OneDrive, Twitter, WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Slack, Clash of Clans, Clash Royale and Facebook Messenger.

Gaming performance was tested using Asphalt 8: Airborne and Dead Trigger 2. High frame rates ensured smooth performance, although loading times could have been better. Applications and games did not crash or freeze, which is also facilitated by a sufficient amount of RAM.

In real use, performance did not disappoint either. When working with the dialer, contacts, messenger and calendar, there were no complaints about speed and responsiveness. If the beauty of the user interface does not matter to you, performance ensures a convenient experience.

Battery

The thin body of the Nubia Z11 Max is deceptive, as it fits a 4000 mAh battery into a 7.4 mm thick device and a relatively light weight. This value is enough for a full day of device operation between charges with moderate use and up to 20 hours with high load.

Nubia has added a number of optimizations that save battery when the device is not in use, but the downside to this is often the lack of notifications. Even with such saving options disabled, the operating time is quite good.

The smartphone charges quite quickly, although the version with MediaTek does not mention support for fast charging technologies. Charging from 0 to 100% takes approximately 45 minutes. If you use the included charger, this will take about an hour and a half.

Conclusion

Nubia Z11 Max tries to be a premium device with good components, camera, battery and build quality. However, in terms of price-quality ratio, it is not as attractive a purchase as the Xiaomi Mi Max; in terms of software, it is also inferior. To be in demand on the international market, the manufacturer must work on the system and attract the attention of users with high-quality functionality. For starters, it would be a good idea to upgrade to at least the Marshmallow version.

Xiaomi Mi Max will be the main competitor of Z11 Max and already offers latest version Android, a cohesive user interface and a lower price of about $245. What's better about the Z11 Max is the rear camera, AMOLED screen and design.

Those who want a large screen for watching videos and reading will prefer the 6-inch AMOLED, but the Mi Max also has many advantages. The Z11 Max Snapdragon 652 version looks better in comparison with the Mi Max, but is $100 more expensive than the MediaTek version.

If the price were lower or there were minimal options for customizing the interface, the device would be more attractive. With the upcoming Honor Note 8 and Lenovo Phab 2 Pro with greater functionality, you can expect a reduction in the cost of the Z11 Max. In the meantime, the device feels like a waste of good components, unless you install different firmware yourself. On English language There are not many of them, especially in Russian.
