Any photo processing can be compared to developing film - without this, you won’t be able to get an impressive result. In the simplest case, the frame is edited by the camera. We don't even notice it. But in-camera algorithms do not always work perfectly. Firstly, the camera's capabilities are limited (the processor is not as powerful as in a computer). Secondly, automation cannot accurately predict your creative ideas, so it will produce an average result.

By the way, the author’s ideas are not always realized even in ideal shooting conditions. For example, when photographing in low light, we often get “noisy” shots. What to do if the camera cannot cope with noise on its own? In this situation, you should resort to post-processing in a photo editor.

In this article we will look at how to remove noise from an image. This is one of the first operations with which photo retouching begins. We will be working in Photoshop CC. All screenshots were taken in the operating room MacOS system, but in Windows windows and the settings dialogs look similar.

There are several ways to remove noise in Adobe Photoshop; we will look at the two simplest ones.

We recommend duplicating the original layer and performing all operations with noise on a copy of the layer. If the correction turns out to be very strong, you can always reduce the transparency of the layer or add a mask to it to remove the effect from certain areas of the image.

To duplicate a layer, use the keyboard shortcut Command+J or select menu item LayerDuplicate Layer.

Removing noise in a RAW converter

You should start working with noise at the RAW conversion stage. This is what will allow you to get an image of maximum quality without loss of detail. By the way, sometimes it is better to leave a little noise, but preserve details in the image, than to get a “clean”, but blurred and undetailed picture.

But even if you are processing an image that has already been converted or taken in JPEG format, you can use the module Adobe Camera Raw for conversion, it works great on any images.

To launch Camera Raw, you must either open the RAW file in Photoshop or use the menu item FilterCamera Raw Filter/"Camera Raw Filter".

In Adobe Camera Raw, noise reduction controls are located on the Detail/"Detailing".

Noise is usually divided into two components: color (Color) and brightness (Luminance). The color component is visually expressed in the form of multi-colored grains and can be removed quite well. The brightness component is grain. And here, when making adjustments, the main thing is to find a balance between the moment when noise interferes with the perception of the image, and the moment when the photo becomes “plastic” due to excessive blurring of details in the process of dealing with noise.

Often it is enough to remove only the color noise. The brightness is left because it is more similar to film grain and does not interfere with the perception of the image. Work with noise removal should be carried out at 100% image magnification and select the values ​​of all parameters based on the structure and size of the photo.

Let's now look at the parameters that you can influence when removing noise in Adobe Camera Raw.

Color noise:

    Color- the impact force of the tool. The higher the value, the greater the effect on the color component. 0 - the impact level is 0, the parameter is not applied.

    Color Detail preserves color detail in border areas. High values ​​protect fine, detailed color boundaries, but may cause color spots. Low values ​​provide better noise control, but may cause color loss. Anything outside this radius will be perceived as noise and choked.

    Smoothness/“Smoothness of color” helps combat remaining color artifacts. Raise the values ​​if the color spots do not go away.

Luminance Noise (default off):

    Luminance- force of influence.

    Luminance Detail- everything outside this radius will be perceived as noise and choke. The lower this value, the greater the loss of detail and the softer the image becomes, but more noise is removed. Increasing the value of this parameter preserves more detail, but also leaves more noise.

    Contrast/“Brightness contrast”- adding local contrast in border areas while preserving details. If you increase the values, the noise will return, but the image will become more contrasty.

Removing noise using the Reduce Noise filter

The second way to remove noise is to use a filter Reduce Noise: FilterNoise/"Noise"Reduce Noise.

Let's take a photo taken at ISO 12800 with pronounced noise.

This filter has two operating modes: Basic/"Basic" and Advanced/"Advanced". And any set of parameters can be saved as a preset by clicking on the icon in the header of the parameters block. Then the selected settings can be used for all photographs in a series or for all photographs taken at the same ISO value.

Getting rid of “ladders” in the gradient

Often the use of a gradient leaves behind “ladders” - color transitions visible to the naked eye. Many designers have no idea how to get rid of them, although there is a simple and quick way. First, change the image mode from 8-bit to 16-bit in the tab Image. Convert the layer to a smart object if it is not one - you can do this in the tab Filters. Find the item here Blur and turn it on Surface Blur. By moving the sliders, achieve a result that suits you.

If after blurring there are several sharp transitions left, create a new layer using the key combination Ctrl+Shift+N, select the mode in the window that opens Overlay/Overlay and check the function Fill with Overlay-neutral color. Open the tab Filters, Choose a section Noise and turn on the instrument Add Noise. In the window that opens, set the value that will help hide the remaining transitions.

To add rays of the sun to an image, first you need to select the lightest areas of the picture - it is from there that the sun will shine. The easiest way to do this is with a tool Color Range.

When the tool window opens, select the mode from the first drop-down list Backlight/Highlights. Then move the parameter slider Scatter/Fuzziness to the left and focus your attention on the parameter Range. You need to make sure that the lightest areas of the image are selected.

As soon as you press the “OK” button, the program itself will select the desired areas - copy them to a new layer using the Ctrl+J command and convert the layer into a smart object. Go to the tab Filters, select Blur and then - Radial Blur. In point Blur Method put Linear/Zoom and set the parameter Quantity/Amount to the maximum. In a small window on the right, the program will show how the blur will be located - it is very important to correctly mark the center, which should coincide with the light source.

To make the rays more saturated, just duplicate the layer using the Ctrl+J command the required number of times. Select all created layers, right-click on them in the list of layers and select Convert to Smart Object. Now all that's left to do is add a little blur: go to Blur Gallery and select a tool Field Blur- with its help you can adjust the degree of blurring in different areas of the layer.

If you want to make your image more realistic, try different layer blending effects; You can also create a mask and remove some rays from the image using the tool Brush Tool. To make the picture even more attractive, you can create a fill layer, set its transparency to about 3-5%, or experiment with the tool Curves.

Everyone who works in Photoshop uses the tool Curves, but few people know what horizontal Curve, but its use is one of the simplest and most convenient techniques in Photoshop.

To test a new way to use the tool, open any image, create an adjustment layer Hue/Saturation, reduce the parameter Saturation to minimum and set the layer to blend mode Soft Light. Then create a layer with Curves, apply it to the saturation layer by long-clicking on it Alt key, and make a neat horizontal curve.
