Which MSI laptop is best for you? MSI GX70 laptop review. Description, technical specifications, reviews

Many laptop manufacturers are confident that by equipping a mobile device with a multi-core processor and installing a mid-class discrete video adapter, you can safely place your product in the gaming class. This approach of many well-known brands has led to the fact that the expensive class is overcrowded with laptops that simply cannot cope with resource-intensive games. Naturally, this generates negativity towards manufacturers from buyers.

The focus of this article is on a mobile device that can handle all the dynamic toys on the market - the MSI GX70. This laptop will not only allow you to run resource-intensive applications, but also provide the opportunity to play at the highest quality settings. Owner reviews and expert recommendations will introduce the reader to this wonderful device.

First meeting

The packaging of the laptop is more like a matryoshka doll. The yellow cardboard box, which protects the contents from shocks and abrasions during transportation, contains a huge case inside. Red pen, black cardboard, dragon logo on one of the displays - you can immediately see that this package contains an MSI GX70 Destroyer. Some modifications of devices show advertisements for some popular game on one of the displays.

After opening the case, the owner will get acquainted with the package: laptop, battery, manual and many disks with software. The mobile device is hidden in a thick black case. But that's not all. After removing the cover, the user will find another protective layer in the form of a white fabric envelope. And only by removing it can you finally get to mobile device. Two protective cases included in the kit still will not replace one branded mouse - this is what many buyers think, judging by their reviews.

Features of the package

The included power supply for charging the battery is heavy and bulky. It is simply inconvenient to carry such a device with you, hence the negative reviews from users who complain about the lack of compactness when transporting the MSI GX70 Destroyer 3CC 233RU laptop.

There are also questions about the instructions. The manufacturer provided a mobile device big amount brochures that do not carry any useful information. Regular waste paper: advertising brochures, recommendations for storage, transportation and operation, as well as a catalog containing addresses and telephone numbers service centers in the territory Russian Federation. The instruction manual itself is more like a memo and does not describe all the functionality of the gaming device.

There are a lot of disks with drivers and software included, but the user, like paper brochures, does not need them (except for the drivers). After all, the discs contain demo versions popular programs and games that crave registration and payment.

Appearance and build quality

It’s best to start our review of the GX70 with the finish of the case. It is made of thick plastic and has metal inserts. This explains the heavy weight of the mobile device. As for soiling, it is present only on the inside of the case. It is not clear why the manufacturer made the frame of the display and keyboard unit glossy, while all other elements of the case have a matte finish.

There are no complaints about the build quality. During operation, the user will not detect creaks, distortions or displacement of the ports relative to the body. There are no complaints even about the hinges that hold the cover of the mobile device. Although their movement is tight, it allows you to open the laptop without much effort. The hinges work great, every user can verify this. It is enough just to set any angle of inclination of the lid. This is good news, because after all, the mobile device is equipped with a 17.3-inch display, which is heavy.

Interfaces and connectors

Regarding the placement of ports on the body of the MSI GX70 laptop, reviews from owners are contradictory. The manufacturer placed the cooling system grille on the left side of the mobile device, and took up the free space on the back panel of the laptop with interface connectors. For many users, this arrangement of ports is inconvenient, because, in addition to the fact that the gadget on the table takes up more space, the connection itself also causes inconvenience.

On the left side the user will find three USB port 3.0, card reader and 4 gold-plated contacts for connecting acoustics. The right panel is less rich: optical drive and two USB 2.0 ports. As for the rear panel, the manufacturer placed on it a plug for connecting a power supply, an RJ-45 network interface and three video outputs (VGA, HDMI and Display Port).

Input device

The MSI GX70 3CC 233RU laptop is equipped with a real gaming keyboard. Firstly, her appearance commands respect - the exquisite finishing of the buttons, the metal frame of the keyboard unit and the equipping of the keys with backlit zones really attract attention. As for convenience, this is not an acquired taste. After all, not all users like the short travel of buttons with sensitive feedback to the finger after pressing. Many players prefer long button travel and low recoil (we are talking about racing fans).

Not everything is simple with the touch pad either. It is unknown why the manufacturer edged the touchpad with a small recess in the case. Perhaps the company's designers wanted to limit finger movement beyond the touch pad, but did not think about the fact that they turned the touchpad into a real dust collector. The sensor itself supports multi-touch and is equipped with a shutdown button.

Economical producer

Apparently, MSI has already become a habit of equipping its expensive products with cheap low-quality liquid crystal matrices. The entire MSI GX70 3CC Destroyer line has a TN + Film screen (while competitors have long switched to IPS). Naturally, such actions by the manufacturer led to the fact that the user will have to forget about large vertical viewing angles and 100% color rendition. The display itself supports FullHD resolution and has a large brightness reserve.

The built-in LED backlight slightly eliminates the poor performance of the cheap matrix. This is primarily noticeable in the display of perfect blacks and shades of gray - the transition has no blurry spots. The backlight copes well with vertical viewing angles, but it is far from ideal. Many experts recommend that owners of this laptop use an external display if they want to get a better picture.

Specifications

Laptops of the MSI GX70 Destroyer series are available in two variations on the global market: on the Intel and AMD platforms. The manufacturer selected processors that are almost identical in performance, power consumption and cost. Judging by user reviews, this approach to the end buyer is the most correct, because future owners will be able to choose a laptop in the same price category.

Crystals with four AMD A10 cores or Intel Core I5 are complemented by a larger volume random access memory(8 GB). The manufacturer has placed an additional DDR3 slot in the laptop in case the user decides to increase the capacity to 16 gigabytes. The discrete video adapter ATI Radeon HD 8970M (R9 290X) with 2 gigabytes of memory allows the owner to run any games at maximum settings. As for hard drives, a surprise awaits the user here too. The laptop has two hard drives: a magnetic drive with a capacity of 1 terabyte (7200 rpm) and SSD drive 128 GB.

Decent multimedia

The MSI GX70 3CC laptop is capable of not only running resource-intensive games, but also accompanying all applications with sound High Quality. The fact is that the manufacturer has equipped its product with a 2.1 system from the famous acoustics manufacturer Dynaudio. In addition to high volume, the stereo system and subwoofer guarantee the owner decent sound. Naturally, the mobile device was supplied by the manufacturer with special software in the form of equalizers to improve the quality of music.

But MSI technologists apparently forgot about the built-in camera. The standard 1.3 megapixel sensor for all laptops with HD resolution looks very strange in a laptop. The manufacturer placed only one microphone next to the camera.

Concerning wireless technologies, then the mobile device is in complete order with this - Wi-Fi standard 802.11n will allow the owner to enjoy high-speed and high-quality Internet. The laptop is equipped with a Bluetooth module, which not only supports file transfer, but is also capable of providing the services of a wireless modem, audio device and remote control.

Gaming performance

Naturally, all potential buyers are interested in the power of the MSI GX70 3CC laptop in resource-intensive dynamic applications. All testing carried out by enthusiasts was carried out only at maximum settings (Ultra), and here is their result:

  • the new Battlefield 4 is capable of displaying 30 frames per second, however, in very saturated scenes this figure drops to 15 FPS;
  • the legendary game Metro Last Light can run at 20 frames per second without slowdown;
  • with the Belarusian representative of World of Tanks it’s even easier - MSI GX70 demonstrates 42 FPS;
  • You can also play on your laptop latest version games Crysis, however, at maximum it will demonstrate only 25 frames per second.

To increase the frame rate, IT experts recommend lowering the quality in game settings first. But using overclocking is not recommended. The fact is that if laptop components fail, the settings made by users (increasing the core frequency) are saved in the video adapter firmware. Accordingly, failure of a mobile device is not a warranty case.

Settings Features

Apparently, it has already become fashionable among laptop manufacturers to equip mobile devices with an intelligent power management system. We are talking about automatic reduction clock frequency processor in BIOS. It is clear that it is powerful gaming laptop The MSI GX70 consumes too much power and gets very hot, but such care from the manufacturer does more harm to the user than helps.

To increase the performance of your mobile device, you need to go to the basic input/output system and disable the POWERNOW function in the power settings. It is worth noting that this change may cause the laptop to overheat, and possibly burn out the processor and discrete video adapter. Therefore, the owner should worry not only about adequate cooling of the device, but also about installing monitoring programs that can promptly notify the user about the critical temperature on the processor and video card cores.

Problems and their solutions

The MSI GX70 3BE laptop is offered for retail sale with the Windows 8.1 operating system installed. IT experts strongly recommend that owners abandon its use in favor of Windows 7 or 10. The fact is that the “raw” operating system does not work correctly with the drivers that are required for the laptop to operate. For example, an ATI video card on a 64-bit platform does not support full-time job DirectX 12, and the driver itself constantly crashes in standalone mode.

After installing the Windows 10 operating system, the user may find that the sound quality of the 2.1 system leaves much to be desired. There's no need to be upset, you just need to allow it Windows system download Latest updates software. After installation and reboot the problem goes away on its own. There is one more fact in favor of reinstalling the operating system - the keyboard backlight does not work correctly (the selected color is not set) under Windows 8.1.

MSI GS70 2QE gaming laptop review: video

A laptop is a portable (portable) computer. A gaming laptop is actually a stationary PC with a large screen and powerful hardware inside. MSI has been making gaming laptops for quite a long time, and this time we have exclusively the best model with an Intel Core i5 processor and a discrete ATI Radeon HD 5870M graphics card. Let's see what the MSI GX740 is capable of.

Review of MSI GX740 laptop

For any beginning of summer - given time sun, young women in short skirts and walking down the street, and they don't actually appear in buildings and don't use a computer. And for others, the same time is the time of pollen, fluff and other allergens flying in the air, so they constantly sit in buildings, sneeze and play “on the computer.” It is possible to play on a simple computer, although it is somehow more comfortable or easier on a laptop. In addition, you can simply take the laptop with you to the dacha or to Siberia, where flowering begins a little later, and similarly play there continuously. With a laptop, you can go to your friends, play together with them and combine business with pleasure. Another advantage of a gaming laptop over a gaming computer is that it takes up less space - if you have only 1 room, then a rather large computer in it can take up too much independent space. And if you still want to play, then a gaming laptop is the only sensible candidate. So gaming laptops certainly have their own audience. The MSI GX740 laptop is a clear adherent of this type of “portable computer” - large, powerful, colorful.
Design and delivery of MSI GX740.
The MSI GX740 comes in a large black and gray box with a raw aluminum look. A 17-inch monitor can easily fit into such a box. On all sides of the box there is the G-Series logo, MSI's line of gaming laptops. There is a plastic carrying handle on top of the box. Inside the box is the laptop itself in a plastic bag of a joyful pink color, fixed between two cardboard holders. In addition to the laptop itself, the following accessories can be found in the box: power supply, power cord for the power supply, disk with drivers and utilities, quick user guide, warranty card for the laptop. The scope of delivery is minimal, not even a cloth for wiping glossy surfaces is provided. But between the top cover of the laptop and the keyboard there was a pad made of soft non-woven material that prevents scratches on the matrix. You can see from the gasket that it is not intended for one-time use, so it will pass for another accessory.

On my own behalf, I’ll say that I’ve never held a more powerful laptop in my hands, moreover, my own gaming computer has almost the same performance, except that it is equipped with a quad-core processor. Actually, the processor here is not top-end even for the mobile segment, and, most likely, it will be the bottleneck in the system. 4 GB of RAM is more than enough for any modern games and applications, and the video card is simply the most powerful among all modern mobile video cards. HDD unexpectedly small - they are now installed anywhere, but nothing prevents you from replacing it with something larger, fortunately this is not difficult to do. Sound card, providing eight-channel sound, will be enough for any games, and the 17-inch screen with high resolution means you don’t have to buy additional monitors. Let's move on to another aspect of gaming laptops that manufacturers always pay a lot of attention to: appearance.

Design and ergonomics of the MSI GX740 laptop

A gaming laptop must look cool. At least, Dell (Alienware), ASUS, and MSI - three of the largest manufacturers of similar cars - have no doubt about this. And despite the fact that the MSI GX740’s appearance slightly suggests a brick, this brick looks like a design solution, a creation of construction skill. The top cover is made of aluminum alloy, painted in dark colors, and its surface has the now popular cutter marks. The only decorative component on it is the MSI logo in the center. It is as a result of this that the top cover turned out to be a more demanding design component of the laptop. The design of the side edges is the most hostile: the bright red edge of the keyboard is more visible on them. Located on the left side disk drive with a wonderfully shaped key, 2 USB 2.0 connectors, a Gigabit Ethernet connector and - a spontaneous solution for a progressive laptop - an RJ-11 connector for connecting a telephone cable to the built-in modem. Here you can find a Kensington Lock connector - a rather useless loop designed to prevent someone from taking someone else's laptop with them. On the right side there are impressive ventilation holes, 1 USB 2.0, IEEE 1394 and eSATA connector, and 4 audio connectors. Support for stereo 7.1 speaker systems speaks for itself. Here, after all, there is a device for reading SD memory cards and one Express Card slot - both are covered with neat plastic plugs. There is also a device for reading SD memory cards and one Express Card slot - both are covered with neat plastic plugs. It's difficult to say whether the laptop has a front edge, since it is significantly beveled and is actually a continuation of the bottom. There are speakers on it, covered with glossy silver plugs with perforations. On the back side there is a power connector, a VGA port and an HDMI port, as well as an impressive block of ventilation holes. At the bottom of the laptop case there are numerous ventilation holes, compartment covers for hard drive and a central compartment, behind which the RAM and mini-PCI-E connectors are hidden. One of the screws connecting the cover of the central compartment to the laptop body is covered with a warranty sticker. The hard drive, located in a separate compartment, can be changed without problems. There is also a miniature subwoofer located on the bottom of the case. We’ll talk about how well it copes with its functions a little later. In addition to the listed elements, there are also four rubber feet: two round at the back and two elongated rectangular ones at the front. Thanks to them, the laptop does not slide on the table surface, and the ventilation holes on the bottom cover are slightly raised above the table surface, and therefore work more efficiently. Once you open the laptop, all doubts about its belonging to the gaming segment, if any still remained, dissipate. The red frame around the keyboard and the silver grille above it are striking and distinctive elements of MSI gaming laptops. Two more speakers are hidden behind the silver grille. The grille frames the black and red capacitive touch panel, which houses 10 buttons. On the left there are 4 buttons for controlling the player, on the right there are buttons to turn Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on/off, as well as one custom button that can be assigned to launch a program. In the middle is the webcam on/off button, as well as the Cinema Pro mode button and the Eco button. Cinema Pro mode, as you might guess, is designed for watching movies - it sets a certain level of screen brightness and turns on SRS Premium Sound. The Eco button is designed to switch power consumption modes, of which there are six in total: Eco Off, Gaming Mode, Movie Mode, Office Mode, Presentation Mode and Turbo Battery Mode. Each mode has its own settings for screen brightness and system performance: for example, in Gaming Mode, the screen brightness is maximum, and the processor and video card operate at full power. In Office Mode or Turbo Battery Mode, on the contrary, the screen brightness is significantly reduced and the processor operates at a reduced frequency. Below the touchpad is a keyboard that once again emphasizes the gaming focus of the laptop: the letters “W”, “A”, “S” and “D” are highlighted in red, as are both arrow blocks. Unfortunately, the attempt to fit a number pad on the keyboard did not have a very good effect on ergonomics: during the game the too narrow “space” and the non-standard location of the “Ctrl” button, the place of which was taken by function key“Fn” (this is the standard keyboard configuration for MSI laptops). This also gets in the way when typing, and the narrow “Backspace” and right “Shift” add additional inconvenience. Otherwise, the keyboard leaves a pleasant impression: the buttons have a soft stroke, but the presses are well felt. Pleasantly surprised Touchpad, characterized by both an interesting design and a high-quality surface and excellent sensitivity. The panel buttons are one piece with a nice cool sheet of aluminum under the wrists. The panel itself is quite wide and hardly heats up, which is also very nice - personally, I really dislike warm touchpads. For its large size and powerful hardware, the laptop is relatively light: only 3.2 kg, so, in principle, it can be carried not only in a car, but also in a backpack. Although, of course, compared to netbooks and modern thin laptops, the weight of the MSI GX740 does not seem small. However, the manufacturer claims that this is the lightest 17-inch gaming laptop on the market.

Battery, display, sound and performance of the MSI GX740 laptop

A huge 9-cell battery with a capacity of 85 Wh is supplied with the laptop, which would be enough for ultraportable laptops for 10-12 hours of operation. Our hero, of course, is not at all portable, so his time battery life turns out to be much less - the MSI GX740 screen alone consumes a very noticeable amount of energy. Nevertheless, the results for such a huge laptop are decent: in Battery Eater Classic mode, the MSI GX740 ran on battery power for 84 minutes, and in Reader's Test mode - 132 minutes. Almost an hour and a half under load on both the processor and video card - this is very good for such a monster. Unfortunately, the battery has one drawback: the laptop is designed for 6-cell batteries, and the giant 9-cell battery protrudes outside the case. And everything would be fine, but the power connector is located almost close to the battery, and the angled pin connects to it. To the right of the power connector there is a VGA port - also very close to it. Because of this, connecting a VGA cable is not very convenient.

The MSI GX740, as we have already found out, has high power consumption, so it comes with a large 120 W power supply. Together with the cable, it weighs about 800 grams, making a significant contribution to the total weight of the box with the laptop. When there is no load, the power supply hardly heats up, while in games or benchmarks it heats up noticeably. The screen of a gaming laptop should be large, bright and high resolution. Of course, a 24-inch screen from a desktop computer will not fit in a laptop, but a regular 15-inch screen is clearly not enough for comfortable gaming. The MSI GX740 has a 17-inch diagonal matrix with WSXGA+ resolution, that is, 1680 x 1050 pixels - this resolution is most often found in monitors with a diagonal of 19 inches or more. Accordingly, on this small matrix the pixels are small, and anti-aliasing in games doesn’t even need to be turned on - its absence will not be too noticeable, and turned on anti-aliasing requires a lot of resources. The screen brightness is at a good level and varies over a wide range: at the lower brightness level it is comfortable to work with the laptop without turning on the light dark room, and on the upper level, it turns out, you can even play outside or on the balcony - in direct sunlight. Apart from the problem described above, the opening angle of the screen is limited only by the battery and can reach 180 degrees - this is an important advantage over many modern laptops, in which the screen opens no more than 120-130 degrees. Above the screen there is a webcam peephole. No matter how beautiful logos indicating the sound quality that manufacturers stick on a laptop, the sound in it always remains characteristically “laptop” - weak, not detailed and without low frequencies. And there’s nothing you can do about it: it’s impossible to build large speakers into a laptop, and the small thickness of the laptop doesn’t allow you to install bass reflexes in it and somehow enhance the lower frequencies. However, MSI engineers have done almost everything possible to improve the sound quality. Five channels, one of which is specifically designed for reproducing low frequencies, do their job: the sound is spacious, there is a hint of bass in it, and the mid frequencies are even quite developed and detailed. With newer laptop models, MSI has taken it even further by installing a speaker system from DynAudio, a well-known premium audio company, in one of them.

In order to evaluate the laptop's performance, we decided to compare it with a desktop computer of a similar configuration. Of course, it is impossible to find an absolutely similar machine, but the configuration of the desktop computer we selected still resembles the configuration of the MSI GX740. The Intel Core i3-540 processor, of course, operates at a much higher frequency: 3.06 GHz, but the video card is somewhat weaker: Zotac GeForce GT240 AMP! slightly faster than the regular GeForce GT240, and it, in turn, is about one and a half times slower than the ATI Radeon HD 5770. After all, the ATI Radeon 5870M is the same accelerator as the ATI Radeon 5770, with the same number of stream processors, except that frequencies mobile version a little lower. If the laptop keeps up with the desktop computer, it can be considered suitable for games, taking into account the monitor resolution. We used average graphic settings and the standard resolution for our laptop screen is 1680 x 1050. The results were as expected: the laptop is inferior to a desktop computer, but provides sufficient performance for gaming in WSXGA+ resolution - this is quite enough. In the games we selected, the average frame rate per second did not drop below 30, which is quite enough for a comfortable game. Using the example of the game World in Conflict, it is very clear that a drop in performance is observed in scenes with complex physics: with a large number of small particles or with explosions. This suggests that the processor is the factor that reduces the frame rate per second. The problem could be solved by installing a Core i7 720QM, but such a replacement would not have the best effect on the final cost of the laptop. A more powerful CPU would allow you to unleash all the capabilities of the video card and get a significant increase in performance. MSI even has such a laptop in its range - the MSI GT740, but it suffers from the other extreme: the capabilities of the NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250M video card are not enough to unlock the potential of such a processor - this video card is much weaker than the powerful Radeon HD 5870M installed in the GX740.

Conclusions on the MSI GX740 laptop

Throughout my entire responsible life, I have been skeptical about the combination of words “gaming laptop”. However, the MSI GX740 laptop forced me to rethink my attitude towards this family of products, and I’m already ready to say that gaming laptops have a right to exist. For the required amount of about 42,000 rubles. You can choose a good gaming PC, although you will need to purchase a monitor, keyboard, speakers and other peripherals for it. The new gaming laptop from MSI is considered at the same time to be a fairly small-sized and all-purpose gaming solution: its screen is suitable for convenient play, the hardware is strong enough to play all kinds of progressive games on this screen in the absence of a “braking system,” and it is of amazingly high quality for a laptop, the sound will allow not overly demanding people not to purchase additional acoustics. Naturally, the laptop also has its shortcomings. These include glossy surfaces in some places, an inappropriate keyboard with an unusual location of some buttons, a processor that does not match the video card, and a noisy cooling system. However, it is impossible to find similar laptops for the same price: they simply do not exist, all models with at least somewhat similar configurations are significantly more expensive. Therefore, the MSI GX740 will be a wonderful choice for those who want to buy a miniature gaming system at a low cost and not think about replacing it for the next 2 years. A good buy- medal for the price-quality ratio.

Bought this for my son when he graduated from school with a gold medal this year. My son appreciated this gift; in his free time from school, he plays The Witcher. The device is really cool and powerful – the fans make noticeable noise under load. However, this does not interfere much, so I can confidently recommend this laptop to everyone!

I am very pleased with the purchase, it is completely worth the cost. After purchasing the laptop in the same store, I bought an additional 8 GB RAM card. The toys work perfectly, without freezing. In my opinion, an excellent combination of price/quality. I recommend this particular device, good hardware for reasonable money!

A good solution is the combination of one of the top processors with a really powerful GTX 1060 video accelerator. The thin case with a black matte finish does not collect fingerprints, which will allow the device to look neat in any case. The device has all the required characteristics to be positioned as a gaming device with a serious performance reserve. This means that the hardware components will be relevant in the near future.

It’s a good laptop, I bought it and don’t regret it one bit. It weighs 2.6 kg, so it is actually quite comfortable to carry, especially if you put it in a shoulder backpack. I am satisfied with the model, I use it for all purposes - both for games, office work, and video rendering Adobe After Effects. I recommend!

A fast and productive device, positioned as a more budget-friendly one (compared to other representatives of the selection), but at the same time with top-end hardware on board. Boasts an advanced sound system and a non-marking matte plastic case.

I purchased a laptop as a replacement for an outdated home PC. During the day I work on it, in the evening my wife surfs on the Internet. It works quickly, without lags or any problems. On weekends I play GTA5 and WoT, at least 50 fps on ultra. In the end, I’m happy with the device and recommend purchasing it.

Another worthy model from the MSI manufacturer is the GV62 8RC-086RU. A seventh-generation Intel processor and a video accelerator from nVidia – 1050 Ti are installed on board. With such a set of components, you can achieve serious performance both in gaming applications and when rendering video or compiling program code. The cooling system includes 3 coolers, which is not surprising - heat must be effectively removed from high-power hardware.

The pre-installed Windows 10 loads in a record 7 seconds when started from the SSD. I am very glad that I bought this particular laptop.

The most budget solution in this selection of devices. Despite its cost, it boasts not top-end, but quite decent hardware. The matte finish of the display does not reflect glare and provides pleasant viewing angles; the slightly curved matte body fits quite laconically into the design of the laptop. The key backlight supports up to five colors and three operating modes.

I took it as a gift for my daughter, but I encroached on it because of the reasonable price. However, after purchasing a second memory stick, Optibay and a 128 GB Kingston SSD, the laptop is slightly inferior to similar devices. The main thing is that the child liked it, and I also sometimes play on this laptop when my daughter allows me.
