General characteristics. Sony Xperia C3 smartphone: reviews Sony Xperia C3 smartphone

IN Lately Selfies have become almost an epidemic among those who like to “take pictures.” Marketers immediately caught this wave of popularity, and new products with powerful front cameras entered the market. Sony was ahead of everyone and immediately released its “brainchild” called Xperia C3. To say that the gadget turned out better than expected is to say nothing. We’ll talk about this further, based on reviews from users who have already experienced this miracle under its second name - “selfiephone”.

Reviews about appearance

When you hear the word “selfie”, what immediately comes to mind is feminine elegance, not much functionality, and a huge front camera that covers half of the front panel. But, fortunately, the smartphone we are considering has a more discreet appearance.

I received quite good comments about my appearance from both women and men. The thing is that its design is made in strict forms. Fans of Sony smartphones will immediately notice the similarity of this model with the T3. At the same time, all the smallest similarities were preserved.

Sony Xperia The C3 doesn't feel very comfortable in the hand. The fact is that this gadget, despite its large diagonal, is only 8 mm thick. Thus, it somewhat resembles a flattened plate. But still, the smartphone has good reviews, since its weight is relatively small for its size. At the same time, the rough back surface allows you to hold the gadget without any problems.

Reviews about the display

This smartphone has an IPS matrix set to “5.5”. Agree, this is quite a lot if we consider the gadget as a mid-level model. But, if you look at the resolution and density of dots, it immediately becomes clear that there is not much room to be had here. 1280 x 720 pixels make their presence felt. They have a density of 267 ppi, which creates squares when viewing the display closely.

Sony Xperia reviews received good results for image quality. Although there is some slight pixelation, the colors are bright and saturated. The sensor here supports up to 10 points simultaneously, which is good news.

The overall user impression of the display is only good. According to them, this is exactly what a mid-priced smartphone should have.

Reviews about performance and features

The smartphone runs on a quad-core processor with a frequency of 1.2 GHz. This is quite a lot and allows you to run very powerful applications. 1 GB of RAM is enough to maintain normal operating speed even with a heavily loaded system.

The internal memory of the smartphone is 5 GB. This value enough for initial work, but not enough to fully use all the functionality. For this reason, it provides expansion up to 32 GB using a flash drive. Naturally, all applications will be installed on the internal memory.

The Xperia C3 also has good reviews thanks to its excellent graphics system. All common benchmarks gave good testing results, and users do not complain about graphics and their processing speed.

Camera reviews

The main strength of the Sony Xperia C3 smartphone is its cameras. At the same time, it is the front one that has a special quality. It here has a matrix of as much as 5 megapixels. The main focus of this gadget is on selfies. Here, the developers, in addition to a very powerful matrix, also provide a flash, which is still very rare in other models. The Xperia C3 would have better reviews if the front camera had autofocus. But even for this, many thanks to the manufacturer.

The main camera here is a little stronger than the front one. It is equipped with an 8 megapixel matrix and at the same time there is autofocus and a very bright LED flash. Pictures from both cameras are of good quality, and users are happy to use these privileges.

Reviews about battery life

Sony smartphone Xperia C3 "has got" quite powerful battery at 2500 mAh. There is enough of it to watch videos online continuously for 9 hours. high quality and with average display brightness. Users also noted long battery life in “heavy” 3D games. Here the figure reached five hours.

to the world Xperia smartphone C3, distinctive feature which became a 5-megapixel front camera with a soft LED flash, and today we were able to get to know it better at the Moscow office of Sony Mobile and form a preliminary opinion. The phone turned out to be very interesting in many aspects.

First, a little about positioning. The Sony Xperia C smartphone (review) became the company's first phone based on the MediaTek chip and at the same time one of the brand's most popular devices. The model was available only for the markets of China, Russia and the CIS countries, where it gained great success - the phone sold out like hot cakes. The emergence of Xperia C3 as a successor popular smartphone designed to strengthen Sony's position in the segment of mid-priced devices around the world. Why is the number 3 in the title? Sony is beginning to prepare its lineup for the arrival of the flagship Xperia Z3. We've already seen the Xperia T3, now we have the C3. The release of models with the numbers 1 or 2 on the market is no longer relevant, so by the fall we will get a fully formed new line of Xperia T3, C3, Z3 and Z3 Compact (at least if you believe the latest rumors).

Compared to the Xperia C, absolutely everything has been improved in the new product. The filling is now from Qualcomm (Snapdragon 400, 1 GB random access memory and Adreno 305), the screen has increased to 5.5", the resolution has increased to HD, and the frame around the display has noticeably decreased. In addition, the display has changed technology - there is now an IPS matrix (albeit a very inexpensive one with a noticeable inversion) instead of TFT TN The body of the smartphone has become much thinner (here only 7.6 mm), but remains just as practical thanks to matte plastic. In addition, the C3 has acquired a wonderful soft mint color, in addition to the traditional black and white, which will definitely appeal to the beautiful half of humanity.

An observant reader will notice that the new product is very similar to another recent device from the company - the Xperia T3 (preview). There are definitely some similarities, but there are also a few key differences. The screen size of the Xperia C3 is 5.5", as opposed to 5.3" for the T3, and the bezel around the display is smaller on the C3. The Xperia T3 has an oleophobic screen, and the body has side inserts made of steel, while the C3 cannot boast of excellent oleophobic properties, and the body is entirely plastic with chrome inserts. The main difference between the smartphones will be the price - the Xperia C3 promises to be very affordable and widespread. Well, don’t forget about the C3’s main trump card - an advanced front camera with a resolution of 5 megapixels and a soft LED flash.

Sony became the first company among A-brands to equip a smartphone with more than just a front-facing module high resolution, but also with a flash. A similar solution can be found in some Chinese models, and even more megapixel front cameras can be found there (8 megapixels are already becoming the standard), but among the first echelon companies no one has ever had this. Most likely, other brands will catch up in the very near future, because the worldwide resilient trend for selfie-style photographs dictates its own rules and not paying attention to it means falling behind the market. Sony has done a lot of work on the front camera and, despite the fact that it is too early to evaluate the quality of the resulting images, we can note a lot of interesting software solutions. To take a photo, just tap twice on the back of the device (this is very convenient, given its size), the advanced face retouching mode allows you not only to soften your skin tone and tighten the oval of your face, but also to apply artificial makeup (it turns out very natural) and replace the pupils of your eyes to cartoon or other funny ones, add frames, augmented reality effects - all this is done in real time. Another interesting feature is voice prompts for the main 8-megapixel camera module. You can point the phone at yourself, selecting a single photo or “two people side by side” mode, and the smartphone itself will tell you how to turn and place yourself in the frame in a very friendly tone. Despite the early state of the software, even now the hints work perfectly in Russian - without an accent or “machine” effect.

In terms of software, this is a smartphone based on Android 4.4.2 KitKat with all the latest Sony innovations and an updated interface. Like the Xperia T3, there is a different font here - the standard elongated one for KitKat, and not the usual one for Xperia Home. Which one will remain in the final firmware is the question. Among the software features characteristic of this model, we can note the one-handed control mode, in which, for example, you can double tap By Home button lower the notification shade and the status bar with controls. We have already seen something similar in the Xperia T2 Ultra (

Where do you think the flash should be located in a smartphone? Near the camera? Right! However, with regards to the Sony Xperia C3, you need to clarify which camera is next to it. The smartphone has it both front and back! There’s also a big-eyed display, a thin body, and the device as a whole is relatively affordable for most DIY enthusiasts. Why? Now I'll tell you everything.

Equipment

The device comes in a cool box made of thick cardboard and with several sections. Each of them has something different. The left compartment accommodates a headset, the right Charger(5V, 850 mA) and connecting cable. The smartphone is located in the center. Everything should be in its place. Obviously, this is exactly what the manufacturer thought when creating this packaging.

Design

The Xperia C3 is a close copy of the T3 smartphone that we published a couple of months ago. In fact, everything is very similar here. Thickness, materials, slightly protruding frames on the front panel, similar characteristics in terms of cheapness - in many ways, these two phones are twins. However, there are still differences, and apart from the large lens of the front camera, they are far from obvious at first glance.

For example, if you take the back surface, you will find that the tactile sensations are the same.

The material on the back is matte, rough and does not evoke much pleasure from the touch.

The difference is that the brand name in the C3 does not protrude above the surface, but is simply printed. In “Tetryoshka” this is played out differently: the inscription sticks out, has a ribbed structure, and so on.

This example shows that there are differences, but they are all in the details. If necessary, I will also touch on the comparison of these two devices.

Let's return to the hero of today's review. On the back side there is the main photosensor, a single-section flash, a microphone hole, a pad for contact via NFC and the main speaker. The latter is poorly positioned. The already not loud sound is muffled if the device is lying face up on a flat surface. The recommendation is simple - place the phone face down.

On the right side, under a plastic flap, there is a slot for Micro SIM. Nearby there is a tiny indicator for emergency shutdown of the smartphone.

Finally, the design of the card backing has been improved: it has become larger, more massive and can be removed quite easily. It makes no sense to keep one nail specifically uncut now. By the way, the extended SIM card slot hints to us that there is also a version that supports two SIM cards at once (D2502).

Nearby is the power button for the device and physical button in charge of filming. Thanks to the Japanese for this essentially simple, but at the same time convenient thing. Shooting through a physical key is much more convenient than doing it by poking your finger at touch buttons. Why do other manufacturers ignore this?

On the opposite side there is a place for a Micro SD memory card and a connector Micro USB. The first one is hidden under its own cover. The second one is open to the point of indecentness, which eloquently tells us that the smartphone is not protected from moisture and dust.

There is a headphone jack on top, and nothing on the bottom.

On the front side there is a front camera with a second flash dedicated specifically for it. No backlight simulation due to backlight brightness. Everything here is adult.

Located nearby led indicator events, ambient light sensor and proximity sensor.

As for convenience and the overall impression, there are nuances. To begin with, I will give the numbers in the table below, which will tell you about the actual dimensions of the device.

The assembly of the smartphone is lame.

The back cover creaks under slight pressure with your fingers.

By at least This is observed in the sample that we are testing. The entirely plastic body does not add any advantages to the overall quality of the device.

The situation is saved by a large display and a relatively thin body. Even despite the angular appearance, a certain airiness is still present.

Since the screen turned out to be quite impressive in size, the manufacturer has provided ways to use the smartphone with one hand. So, when unlocking the keyboard for input graphic key can move first to one edge, then to the other.

Secondly, you can double-click on the “Home” icon and the notification shade will drop halfway to the bottom of the device. Just like the iPhone 6 Plus. These are not just any crutches. The thing is really useful.

Otherwise, you will have to get used to the dimensions. The thickness does not help the situation and this must be kept in mind when purchasing a device.

Smartphone display

The screen is covered protective glass with oleophobic coating. The generation and manufacturing technology of the panel is not specified, but the anti-fat layer could be a little more effective than it actually is. But not critical.

It uses an IPS matrix with a diagonal of 5.5 inches and a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. Don't rush to draw negative conclusions. Yes, the dot density of 267 ppi is not much by modern standards, but it is quite enough for a picture that is pleasing to the eye. Of course, Full HD resolution would look better, but in the absence of a direct comparison with such a resolution, what is in the C3 is not annoying.

Viewing angles, picture richness, contrast - everything is quite at a decent level. For comparison, you can look at the photo of the C3 (above) and iPhone 5S screens in the dark.

There is a slight shift towards greenish tints; on the other hand, the Apple smartphone also suffers slightly from the pinkishness of the display.

As with all Sony smartphones, you can adjust the color scheme in the settings. But, unfortunately, there are no branded image enhancers (X-Reality for mobile, etc.) here.

Technical specifications Sony Xperia C3 (D2533)

It seems to me that it would be appropriate to compare this parameter with the Xperia T3 that I have already described. The devices are close in positioning and price.

Obviously some things are different. In the model with the index "T" slightly more powerful processor, has a gyroscope and supports Wi-Fi band “a”. The C3 has a better front camera and a larger display area. We'll talk about cost later.

The regular modification versus the version with two SIM cards has network support fourth generation. There are no other differences.

Now let's look at smartphone performance.

In toys you can forget about high graphics settings. At medium settings you can play most even modern games. However, the device is definitely not for avid gamers.

The software shell is optimized for the most part well, but at times the device still shuts down and slows down slightly. This happens at times of peak load on the heap. running applications. You must remember to clean up background processes and everything will be fine.

The general thoughtfulness of the system is present. The smartphone is not sharp and fast like its older brothers.

It happened that applications crashed, but this is already rare. There is a problem with the built-in mail client. Even when downloading a couple of dozen letters from the server, the utility freezes and the letters cannot be managed. Fortunately, you can use alternative programs.

Unfortunately, here, as in the Xperia M2 and T3, there is the same problem: when you touch an information input field, for example, a search bar in a browser, the keyboard does not open immediately, but after 5-6 seconds. This happens all the time, and unfortunately, the situation is not corrected by developers from device to device. By the way, pay attention to the screenshots below. On the right I caught a glitch. This shouldn't happen.

Firmware updates arrive regularly and it feels like the developers are not abandoning their users. Many nuances are still being eliminated.

Photo

Let's start reviewing the main feature of the device. The front 5 MP sensor has a wide-angle lens (25 mm, 80 degrees) and is capable of creating photos in a resolution of 2592 x 1944 (4:3) pixels.

Additional functionality includes timer shooting, HDR mode, image stabilizer, shutter release when a smile is detected, and automatic retouching.

Here are a couple of examples by which you can track how the front camera (on the left) shoots, and how the main one (on the right) does it:

Both have a wide angle, but the rear camera makes photos sharper and apparently uses slightly different algorithms to process photos, which is reflected in skin tones.

In general, the front module turned out to be quite decent for its class.

And yet there is room for improvement: the slight blurring of frames should be removed and autofocus added.

The rear is used as usual for many Sony products. 8 megapixel photosensor proprietary Exmore RS backlit (BSI).

The maximum image resolution is 3264 x 2448 and is only available from manual mode. When the latter is activated, many other camera settings appear: HDR mode, ISO, image stabilizer, and so on.

In addition to super automatic and manual modes, there is a standard set of shooting scenarios: creating a panorama, using filters, etc. I already described most of them when I dealt with . I recommend paying attention to Timeshift burst and AR effect (overlaying virtual objects on real photographs). I really like these effects.

Let's look at examples of photos taken with a smartphone.

Bottom line

Let's take another look at the device through the prism of its advantages and disadvantages. What sets a smartphone apart from its competitors, or vice versa, is done worse than others.

  • big screen
  • slim body
  • decent selfie camera
  • support for all modern wireless standards(NFC to LTE)
  • long battery life
  • poor performance
  • creaking plastic case
  • very average main camera
  • quiet sound through external speaker
  • software flaws

And now about the main thing. Official price for Sony Xperia C3 stopped at 15,990 rubles (previously 13,990). For comparison, for T3 they are already asking 18,490 rubles. It is difficult to talk about the adequacy of price tags in times of such fluctuations in the ruble exchange rate.

By the way, I almost forgot to talk about color variations. There are three body colors on the market: black, white and light green (mint) for aesthetes.

Is it possible to consider purchasing a Sony Xperia C3?

At its current cost, the device is unlikely to become good purchase. A large screen and LTE are, of course, important, but weak hardware and an inflated price for one reason or another negate the advantages of the device. A good front camera is just a feature that few people need.

Those who are familiar with model range Sony smartphones, recognizes the design of the Sony Xperia T3 in the 5.5-inch Sony Xperia C3. And in general, it looks in the spirit of the company’s smartphones: speaker slits at the top and bottom of the front panel, a “classic” round power key with a volume rocker underneath it. The side frames do not look thick due to the convex ends. The ends of the device are decorated with inserts similar in color to metal. Perhaps this is the only way the Xperia C3 differs from other Sony smartphones. The back is made of matte plastic, which in our opinion is a more practical option - during the tests it remained like new. At the bottom of the back panel is a line of speaker holes under the Xperia branding (although the sound only comes from a small area on the right).

The weight of the smartphone is 152 grams, which is comparable to the weight of 5-inch devices, for example, Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime (155 grams), and in height - with the 6-inch Lenovo Vibe Z2 Pro (both 156 mm high), in width (79 mm ) - with Samsung Galaxy Note 4. Case thickness - up to 7.9 mm. There's no way to call the Sony Xperia C3 compact; you can't use it with one hand.

Unlike the company's flagships, the smartphone did not receive protection from water. The main material of the case is plastic, the build quality is average. The sample we took for testing bent slightly and crunched under pressure - the price to pay for a thin body with a large diagonal. The Sony Xperia C3 case is expectedly non-separable, so the battery is also non-removable.

The Sony Xperia C3 smartphone can be purchased in three colors: white, black and mint.

Screen - 3.7

The display diagonal of the Sony Xperia C3 is 5.5 inches - you can call it a “phablet”. The resolution for such a diagonal is average - 1280x720 pixels, with a pixel density of 267 per inch; in our opinion, about 300 pixels per inch is optimal for a display. Here it is a little lower, which is noticeable on small icons and fonts. IPS matrix type, viewing angles are average, IPS matrices can be wider. The display does not have an oleophobic coating, so fingerprints easily remain on the screen, but are also easily wiped off.

According to the test results, the maximum display brightness reached 484 cd/m2 - brightness with a margin, and the minimum white brightness (28 cd/m2) can be uncomfortable in the dark. In the sun, the information remains readable, but some kind of more effective anti-glare filter would obviously be helpful here - reading is difficult. The display has automatic brightness adjustment; it works quickly, but in a relatively small brightness range. According to consumer reviews, the mode of working with gloves is important for many; here there is such a mode and it works not only in thin fabric gloves, but also in rather thick leather ones! Typing a message may be inconvenient, but viewing mail, notifications, running the right application or answering a call is more than enough.

Camera

The Sony Xperia C3 has a main 8 MP and a front 5 MP camera. Both cameras have a flash (something you don't often see on front cameras) and a wide range of features. However, it remains unclear to us why the front camera does not record Full HD video. Features include a camera button on the body to launch the camera and take pictures. As on the Sony Xperia M2 Aqua, in the automatic “super” mode the photo resolution is reduced from a maximum of 3264 × 2448 to a 5 MP photo (3104 × 1746 pixels).

The camera has the typical set of features: face and smile detection, autofocus, panorama shooting, HDR mode for video shooting and image stabilization.

The front camera, in our opinion, lacks autofocus and Full records HD video. As always, Sony has equipped the cameras with various modes, like virtual scenes over the video being shot, etc.

The main camera shoots Full HD video at 30 frames per second, stereo sound and focus tracking. The front shoots only in HD (1280×720), the same 30 frames per second. As for the photo quality, it is average, some frames lack sharpness, noise is visible even in good light. You have to try hard to get a good shot; in any case, the auto mode doesn’t do the job the best, but it’s enough for shots for social networks and incidental shots.

Working with text - 5.0

The pre-installed keyboard on the Sony Xperia C3 smartphone is convenient thanks to the large screen diagonal and the wide range of options for customizing it. The keyboard supports the function of continuous text input (Swype), work with dictionaries (writing style, individual words typed by you personally) and has several keyboard covers. In the settings, you can select a telephone keyboard for portrait (vertical) orientation of the smartphone, marking additional characters on the keys, and the ability to add a separate row of icons with numbers. Switching between languages is easy - there is a separate key for this. In addition, there is a one-handed keyboard mode. It can be moved to the right or left to make it easier to type texts with one hand. However, you shouldn’t delude yourself - the size of the icons is becoming too small to fit “under one hand”, so it’s better to work with text with both hands. The keyboard is generally comfortable to type on text messages, not least thanks to the large diagonal.

Internet - 3.0

Sony Xperia C3 comes pre-installed with one browser - Google Chrome, it supports syncing tabs with the desktop version. We checked its operation; in our tests, the browser did not work perfectly quickly and “stuck” on pages when browsing actively. There is no multiple scaling of pages or a separate reading mode; for this you will have to download a separate browser, which does not pose any problem. But there is one-time scaling to a pre-selected size - to do this you just need to double-click on the screen. In addition, the browser has on-page search and a traffic reduction mode.

Interfaces

The Sony Xperia C3 smartphone is equipped with a good set of ports and interfaces. It can be noted the support of the Russian LTE frequencies, NFC, USB-Host and OTG for connecting peripherals. Otherwise, everything is standard, as is often the case; the device does not have dual-band Wi-Fi. Mode Wi-Fi modem and support for 802.11 (b/g/n) standards, Bluetooth 4.0 with support for the A2DP profile for fast music transfer, A-GPS with GLONASS support - all or almost all of this is available on any smartphone. However, DLNA support and Wi-Fi Direct, like the Sony Xperia C3, not every device has. Sony Xperia C3 works with Micro-SIM cards and microSD cards up to 32 GB.

Multimedia - 3.8

The Sony Xperia C3 audio player supports many formats and plays MP3, FLAC, WAV files and a number of less popular formats. In tests, the device played video up to Full HD resolutions, as well as the MOV format, but could not cope with MPEG, TS and WMV formats. The video player supports internal subtitles. At the same time, we didn’t like the fact that not all videos can be easily rewinded - many films simply “freeze” when trying to rewind further and we had to start the film over again. But the smartphone has excellent sound in compact headphones, and in the pre-installed Walkman player you can choose the settings yourself, in particular, adjust the frequencies in the equalizer. In our opinion, a smartphone can easily replace a high-quality music player.

Battery - 3.4

The Sony Xperia C3 smartphone is quite thin, but the diagonal is not small at all and the body is tall; it has a non-removable battery at 2500 mAh. We tested the phone in our standardized tests— the smartphone showed good results in terms of battery life. The device played HD video at maximum brightness for up to 8 hours. When listening to music in airplane mode with the screen turned off, the device was discharged in 71 hours—that’s almost three days! In mode easy to use The smartphone lasted us for a day and a half. When the battery level is low, you can use the STAMINA energy saving mode; it can extend the operation of the device for several hours.

Performance - 2.1

Sony Xperia C3 is positioned as a smartphone for selfies, maybe that’s why the company did not equip the device with powerful hardware. The chipset here is an average, quad-core Qualcomm MSM8926 Snapdragon 400, 1 GB of RAM and an Adreno 305 graphics accelerator. This turns out to be enough for normal operation during everyday use from calls, SMS messages to working with settings and installing, for example, “live”, animated wallpaper But if you open a gallery with a couple of hundred photos that are not the lightest in weight, or open several pages in the browser, then the performance begins to not be enough for fast work.

The device is suitable for most games and applications, but fans of heavy games would be better off paying attention to something more powerful. According to the results of our synthetic tests, the smartphone received results slightly below average. For example, in the AnTuTu benchmark it has up to 18,000 points, while most “average” smartphones with similar hardware received up to 20,000. In the 3D Mark Ice Storm Unlimited test, the Xperia C3 received 4600 - 4700 points, the results are slightly below average. Casual games (like Minion Rush) performed well, but Asphalt 8 was better played on low settings graphics, at medium fps it is already starting to “sag”.

Memory - 3.5

The total amount of internal memory on the Sony Xperia C3 is small and limited to 8 GB, of which about 4.4 GB is available to the user. This is even a little sad, but memory cards are inexpensive now, the smartphone supports Micro SD cards up to 32 GB. Also supported " hot swap» memory cards without turning off the device - to do this, you just need to open the corresponding cover and insert/change the card.

Peculiarities

The main feature of the Sony Xperia C3 smartphone is the front camera for selfies, 5 MP and with flash, which is not often found on front cameras. Thanks to this, the phone is positioned as a large “selfie phone”. A nice addition is the glove mode.

The device operates under Android system 4.4.2 and in this moment is not on the list of Sony smartphones that will receive an update to Android 5.0 Lollipop. IN branded shell everything from Sony standard applications have been redesigned and have an original look. The dialer has Russian letters, which is convenient for searching desired contact, the music player can search for album covers and much more. Among the pre-installed applications, you can note Lifelog for recording the events of your life, radio (you will need a headset), office suite OfficeSuite with document viewing, Smart Connect for connecting devices, file manager and an application for the Play Station 4 console. In the display settings, you can smoothly adjust the white balance. As you can understand, there are a lot of applications pre-installed on the smartphone, which take up a lot of space for not very large volume built-in memory.
