Package

Supplied in a white box made of thick cardboard.

A no-frills kit. Just the phone itself USB cable- Type C, power supply, paper clip and waste paper. Instead of an adapter for the usual sockets, the store put a separate 5V/2A power supply supposedly from Apple.

The cable length is 99 cm. Characteristics of the NB-A520A power supply: 100-240V~50/60Hz 300 mA, 5V = 2000 mA.

Appearance

The Z17 Mini has a quite typical size for a 5.2" smartphone. It is slightly smaller in height than, for example, the Meizu Pro 6 and Honor 9 with a 5.15" diagonal, and one and a half millimeters taller than the Xiaomi Mi6. My copy with a combination of black, red and gold looks a little tacky. The version without gold inserts looks more harmonious to my taste. But you will have to put up with the presence of red elements in any of the existing versions. As for ease of use, the device fits quite comfortably in the hand. If this hand is wearing rubber gloves. The body is metal and smooth, which makes the smartphone incredibly slippery. Glass phones even feel more confident in your hands. Sometimes you are afraid that at one moment the subject will simply slip out. A cover is required. There are no complaints about the build quality of the case. Everything is quite monolithic without any extraneous creaking or play.

To begin with, I will try to convey to you through the photo the joy of this pleasant moment of removing the film.

Let's move on to the design. It’s worth noting right away that in reality the phone has a deep black color without going into a gray tint. Some photos did not show the actual color. At the top of the front panel there are: a front camera, a proximity sensor and a speaker grille.

At the bottom - Touchpad navigation. In the center there is a branded backlit ring that serves as both the “Home” button and the notification indicator. It will not be possible to completely get rid of it, because... highlighted in red and without backlight. On either side of the ring are a couple more microscopic Schrödinger buttons. They are extremely difficult to see not only during the day, but even at night.

On the black-gold and blue versions, the border around the screen is gold. On black and red - in the color of the back cover. On white and gold - silver.

On the left side of the device there is a combined tray for two nano-Sim cards or one + microSD.

On the opposite side there is a power button and a volume rocker. They have a distinct and not the quietest click. They are not seated tightly and rattle slightly when shaken.

On top there is a noise reduction hole and a 3.5 mm mini jack. It's quite strange to see a mini-jack on top. However, at least he exists.

At the bottom there is a Type-C port, one external speaker and a microphone.

On the back of the smartphone there is a dual camera that protrudes literally 1 mm, an LED flash and a fingerprint scanner.

At the bottom of the non-removable cover without dancing with a tambourine there are a couple of lines about the manufacturer.

Screen

A 5.2" LTPS matrix with a resolution of 1920x1080 is installed. The whole thing is covered with 2.5D Gorilla Glass. The generation is kept silent.

The pixel density is 424 ppi. Brightness 450 nits. Contrast ratio 1500:1. Color gamut 85%.

The polarizing layer is applied horizontally, i.e. In portrait mode, wearing sunglasses will not be a problem.

The color rendition is correct, but it really lacks more richness of the picture. The colors are somehow painfully faded. There are no questions about viewing angles. Red does not turn green and no other distortions are observed. When tilted, the brightness only decreases. Black fades into gray. However, from LTPS in this price segment there is no need to wait for anything else. Auto brightness does not work slightly as we would like - in a barely lit room it is lowered by ~15-20% of the desired level. There have been no sunny days for more than a month, so the brightness outside in this nasty weather is 50-60%. The minimum value is quite comfortable for interacting with the phone in complete darkness.

There is an oleophobic coating and it’s quite good. It readily collects fingerprints, but you can get rid of them just as quickly. If you believe the reviews from w3bsit3-dns.com, it is quite possible to find a protective glass for this device that covers the entire front panel.

In the screen settings, you can adjust the temperature and saturation of the picture. For some reason the maximum value is called “Light”. I don’t see a critical difference, as, for example, on Samsung devices, in all three modes.

There is a very strange situation with the number of supported simultaneous touches. With activated gestures, which I will talk about towards the end of the article, only three fingers are recognized. If we refuse them, we get the standard ten touches. To be fair, I note that there is really no difference. However, confusion remains.

Wireless network

Supported frequency range:

  • 2G: 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
  • 3G: TD-SCDMA - B34 / B39 / WCDMA - 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100
  • 4G: TDD-LTE - B38 / B39 / B40 / B41 / FDD-LTE - B1 / B3 / B5 / B7
  • Other: CDMA 1x EVDO 800 VoLTE (with operator support)

The frequencies above are for the Chinese version of the phone and are listed on the Chinese official website. In Russia, the list of frequencies also includes B8 and B20 for FDD-LTE. However, even on w3bsit3-dns.com I couldn’t find an intelligible statement that these frequencies are not here, but here they are. They are probably present in all versions, but in Chinese they are locked in software.
As for the quality of communication, there is nothing supernatural. Everything works exactly the same as in all other smartphones that I have ever used. There is no extraneous noise during a conversation. The interlocutor and I can hear the interlocutor without interruption. I did not see a significant drop in the network reception level on the corresponding indicator in the status bar, however, in the battery consumption statistics, the signal quality was marked orange for a fairly significant period of time. I only tested 3G for lack of anything else.

Two of my friends from the Moscow region and Kirov have been using this phone for more than two months. According to them, 4G works stably on MTS and Beeline. Screenshots of speed measurements as confirmation.

The WiFi module supports both 2.4G and 5G. 2.4G measurement (apartment 50 m²): near the router, through one room, in the room on the opposite side of the apartment, at the farthest point from the router on the balcony.

5G measurement. The procedure is the same.

Can be used with two nano-Sims. One radio module is installed. 3G/4G can be active only on one SIM card, the second one will work on 2G.

Supports GPS, GLONASS and Chinese Beidou. While in the apartment, I instantly found 27 satellites, connecting to 12 of them took up to 15 seconds.

Bluetooth 4.2 with BLE support.

NFC is present. Android Pay Works only on global firmware version 2.01 and higher. The Troika card can be read without any problems.

Sensors

Memory

The model under review is equipped with 4 GB of LPDDR3 RAM, 933 MHz and 64 GB of eMMC5.1 ROM. Quite modest figures for 2017. The OS does not provide for monitoring the state of RAM, so you will have to use software for these purposes. If anyone cares at all. Out of 4 GB and two dozen applications in the background, half of which have already been unloaded, 1.3 GB is free. Not the best indicator either. On Honor 9, for example, with the same usage scenario, up to 2 GB is free.
The screenshots below compare ROM speeds.

Performance

The Z17 Mini is equipped with a 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 MSM8976 processor, made using 28 nm technology. process. Includes 4 Cortex-A53 cores with a frequency of up to 1.2 GHz and 4 Cortex-A72 with a frequency of up to 1.8 GHz. The Adreno 510 acts as a graphics accelerator. This filling is quite enough for comfortable use. The interface, animations, and speed of opening applications work without lags or friezes, but somehow it’s very impressive. What's missing is a more fluid interface. No, he's not stupid. It’s just that the difference will be noticeable to those who have used faster devices. What follows is a pack of screenshots from various benchmarks. They started one after another without cooling, unloading RAM or other tricks.

Audio Video

The external speaker is only suitable for simple ringtones at ~60% volume. I may be too picky when comparing the sound of the Nubia and S7 speakers, but at maximum volume the sound is like coming from a barrel. The top ones mix into an unimaginable mess with the middle ones, and the insignificant ones low frequencies diverge along the bottom of the phone body. In general, in the old days of listening to low-quality music from a phone in the courtyards, such a device would not have been appreciated. It is worth noting that this situation is not observed on all compositions, so it is not all bad. As for the sound in the headphones, it’s also nothing special. The situation is no better and no worse than other smartphones without DACs and other improvements. FLAC is supported out of the box.

The sound settings are indecently modest. It is possible to tweak only high and low frequencies. Turning the bass closer to maximum actually makes the picture a little better. At the same time, it does not become droning and paramount. High ones at zero are removed almost completely, at 100% they are removed in excess. There is FM radio.

The promotional video in UHD plays with severe jerks and freezes when selecting a different time period. 4K video shot on a smartphone plays back without any hitches.

Navigation buttons and scanner

The scanner is also missing stars from the sky. With a confident finger touch it works without problems. If you press it deliberately quickly, then every other time. The time interval between touching and turning on the screen could be at least 2 times shorter. Here, for example, is the scanner’s response speed on Honor 9 - But here’s the Z17 Mini:

There is a limit of one copy of the same finger. But it can be bypassed. Checking for an already scanned fingerprint occurs at the first touch. Those. First you need to attach another finger, and then you can hammer in as many copies of one finger as you like. Also, using the scanner, you can take a photo in the camera application and by holding your finger on the sensor for a long time, call up the “Super Screenshot” menu, where you can capture a scroll, select a part of the screen, etc.

There are two options for placing buttons in the navigation bar: back on the right or on the left. The action triggered by the center button is regular means does not change. But its second functional side, the indicator, can be configured. It is possible to change the backlight brightness to completely off. But “Back” and “Menu” remain practically invisible at any value.

Camera

The smartphone has a dual Sony IMX258 module. Both are 13 MP, both f/2.2, covered with sapphire crystal. But there are still differences. The second camera is monochrome. Laser autofocus and optical stabilization were not delivered. The quality of the photo will be directly proportional to the quality and quantity of lighting. Shooting in DNG/RAW is available. My friends claim that taking photos in RAW gives +100 to the quality of the final image, but I did not notice any noticeable improvements. On the contrary, a generous portion of noise appears. All photos were taken in 16:9 aspect ratio. Let's start with the divine Chinese software bokeh effect, which for some reason is called “Book”. Without a filter:

Available aperture effect values: f/1.0, f/1.2, f/1.4, f/2.0, f/2.4, f/2.8, f/3.2, f/3.5, f/4.0, f/4.5, f/5.6, f /6.3, f/7.1, f/8.0, f/11, f/13.0 and f/16.0. The photo is set to f/2.0.

The poor unicorn lost its tail, horn, hooves and a little bit of its mouth. The fifth point of another unicorn turned out to be completely unblurred.

At a closer distance, the processing is more accurate, but is only relevant for the distinct outlines of the subject. A person’s hair is very likely to get caught and washed out. f/1.0 is practically unusable due to overly aggressive processing. The subject has been out for quite some time and the chances of improving the algorithms with updates tend to zero.

In the daytime it is quite possible to get good pictures. As soon as it starts to get dark, the situation will quickly change for the worse. Shooting in Nubia in the evening is a completely different matter. Due to cloudy weather, the photo appears faded.

Let's fix this. A couple of minutes of surface processing and you can bring Nubian images to an acceptable level.

Monochrome camera.

Monochrome camera.

HDR doesn't work as well as we'd like. In the vast majority of photographs, the brightness increases only slightly, but the richness characteristic of this mode cannot be achieved.

Monochrome camera.

Only one picture will tell about the quality of shooting in the dark, from which everything becomes clear.

The front camera is 16 MP, f/2.0, and has a viewing angle of 80°. The photos are pretty mediocre. There is no autofocus. Portrait mode is also available, which gives nothing but useless soap.

Video is recorded in 4K / FHD 60 fps / FHD and HD. When shooting on the move, the image shakes noticeably. 4K video examples:

Autofocus speed.

The camera software is not the most functional and obvious. Some elements are completely illogical. For example, “Book” instead of “Portrait”. Manual settings Available only for photo mode.

All sorts of modes are available, half of which are not much different from auto. There is no usual MP setting. Select only one of three available aspect ratios: 1:1, 4:3 and 16:9.

Photos, by the way, are sorted in the device’s memory into separate folders in accordance with the mode selected when shooting.

Autonomy

The device is powered by a non-removable 2950 mAh battery. It's very modest. However, this is the case when the battery capacity is not a death sentence. For almost two days with alternating use of WiFi/3G, a bunch of various synchronizations, pairing with watches, surfing the Internet, photography, YouTube, 25 minutes of conversations and social networks, the screen operating time was almost five and a half hours. A very good result.

And from this fiend of hell, blood pours out of his eyes like a river. Just shame and disgrace.

Power saving modes and “Operating mode” are available, which increases frequencies for selected applications. Add everything to it except the pre-installed software.

There is no fast charging. Accepts up to 1.5A. This is also a very strange phenomenon for 2017. From 2% to 100% charges in 2:20-2:30 hours.

There is no excessive heating either during normal use or during gaming. Everything is within the normal range.

Shell and software

Now we have come to the biggest fly in the ointment. Now sit down, exhale and read. At the time of publication of the review (12/02/17), the Z17 Mini runs under Android control 6 . Six. It would be funny if it weren't so sad. Before us is a typical Chinese product in the form of Nubia UI4.0. A mixture of MIUI and Flyme interspersed with breathtaking notes of Chinese design thought. Everything here is according to the canons: sometimes the translation in the global version of the firmware is crooked, and there are no spaces between words, and inappropriate design elements, and notifications that do not work out of the box (this can be solved). A smartphone arrived with global firmware, Russian language and Google services. There were practically no junk applications. I didn’t even look at its version, because I immediately started installing other firmware, but more on that later. Some screenshots of the interface:

Unfortunately, there are no cool features that could level out the curvature of this shell. Gestures that cause the touch to recognize only 3 touches work every other time. Some of them are so inconvenient that you don’t even understand who could even think of it. They are also accompanied by animation from the 00s - turning the page. I won’t write about each one, because... are not of particular interest.

In another menu, another pack of gestures is available, but more familiar to the average user.

Multi-window mode available. Calls it either from the settings or by swiping from the bottom edge of the screen.

Somehow like this. Not too much, right?

Firmware, root, custom

As I already wrote in the previous chapter, even though the phone arrived with global firmware, to put my mind at rest, I still downloaded a fresher version. Stock firmware can be installed in the same way as on Meizu, i.e. without the need to enter the bootloader, recovery, etc. Just throw the archive into the phone’s memory and select it in the appropriate settings section.

It will not be possible to install custom recovery on global firmware. By at least, I could not get. The body file fulfills its task, TWRP is loaded, but when we reboot into recovery we end up in the standard one. In order to avoid this trouble, you first need to install Chinese version stock firmware using the previously described method and only then flash TWRP onto it. Detailed instructions available on 4pda. After the procedures have been completed, you can do absolutely anything. Even run a drain through it. But I’m not interested in him, so we turn to custom for help. For fans of MIUI and Flyme, the corresponding firmware is available. Fortunately, I’m not one of them, so let’s look towards the naked android. There isn't a lot of choice. Only three options: LineageOS based on 6.0.1, Moke on 7.1.2 and ResurrectionRemix on the same version. If you believe the information I found, then the LOS developers are immediately preparing a build for Oreo, bypassing Nougat. A naked android with Chinese language doesn’t appeal to me, so the choice fell on RR. The firmware process is no different from other smartphones. I didn’t see any obvious bugs in the custom itself, everything works smoothly and without hitches, but even here it still doesn’t have the desired interface speed. The only negative is the lack of camera. Unfortunately, for unknown reasons, I was unable to launch a port of a camera application from a pixel with HDR+ support to RR. It crashed in all cases. And you don’t even have to try to install it on stock, because... Designed for Android 7+. If you are not into mobile photography, then it is quite possible to use this firmware for everyday use and not suffer from the stock shell. There is no point in talking about its wide functionality, because... There is already a lot of material on this topic on the Internet.

Now about root rights on the stock. Whether it is necessary? Only if you use software that requires them. Otherwise, you will not get any customization or the ability to configure the kernel. It's all because of the rotten community on 4pda and xda. Android Pay will work without problems on a rooted device with the help of a little dance with Magisk.

Conclusion

The smartphone turned out to be quite controversial. Because the review is to some extent IMHO of the author. I will write what doesn’t suit me and why I wouldn’t use it. The first is the shell. To be clear, I don't like MIUI, much less Flyme. And Nubia UI combines these two shells. Second - Android 6. Seriously? The third is a red ring. It's very much an acquired taste. If it were possible to completely hide it, it would be very cool. Fourth (taste) - after amoled, such a matrix seems like something from the last century. Fifth - absence fast charging. Two and a half hours is a very long time. One could say that the downside is the quality of the photo in the dark, but for artistic photography I prefer a different technique, so for me the camera has never been in first place. An intermediate conclusion follows from this - on custom firmware based on bare Android, I could have used this smartphone. At least there you can completely deactivate the backlight touch buttons and use on-screen ones. Life will be easier now. And now about the benefits. The red version of this phone looks very stylish and the navigation ring no longer seems out of place. With good lighting, you can easily get a decent shot on stock. The device has acceptable dimensions and is very thin. And I don’t even know what else to highlight. Prices for the Z17 Mini start from ~$230 for the younger model and $279 for the older one. Is it worth the money? You decide.
Thanks to all.

The company's product line has been replenished with a new beautiful top-class smartphone. The Chinese presented the long-awaited Nubia Z17 model. This device has acquired extremely powerful hardware and a stylish design; moreover, its display is completely devoid of side frames, which looks very impressive. The new product has everything to successfully replace its predecessor Nubia Z11, which buyers reacted very favorably to. Therefore, it will be interesting to consider this flagship in detail.

Packaging and equipment

The device comes into the hands of the buyer in a presentable box with thick cardboard; a combination of red and black colors is used for it. The box contains, in addition to the device, the following delivery kit:
  • powerful adapter;
  • pin for the nanoSIM + nanoSIM compartment;
  • cord;
  • 3.5 mm adapter;
  • waste paper.

Appearance and materials

The new product has acquired a design that has remained virtually unchanged for several years. Although the appearance of the device does not show us anything new, it is able to evoke positive emotions, especially when you get acquainted with the ZTE Nubia Z17 for the first time. The body is dominated by sharp corners, so ease of use suffers a bit as they feel good in the palm. But if you're being picky, overall the ergonomics are excellent. The back panel is pleasant to the touch, it is not slippery, but it also collects stains well. The all-metal body looks very solid. There is only one plastic streak on the back, it is located at the bottom. The top seam is built into the top end, which is a big plus for the manufacturer, because this decision made the device more attractive. We can also praise the body color options, since the device looks great in all colors: red, blue, gold, and also black, there is a regular one and with gold splashes.

The front panel is, of course, one of the main trump cards. A frameless display is no longer something supernatural in our time, however, this aspect never ceases to amaze. The Nubia Z17 display has no indentation on the right or left at all, and in combination with the spectacular 2.5D glass it looks very cool. Due to this, the hero of our review turned out to be narrower than his competitors with the same diagonal. The branded touch-sensitive central button in the form of a glowing red circle under the screen has also not gone away, this is what sets devices from Nubia apart from others. It not only serves as a control element, but also notifies you of missed messages.

Buttons on the sides are also present, they are equipped with a soft red backlight. The panel above the display contains a selfie camera, sensors and a voice speaker hole. The bottom end is occupied by a Type C USB connector, a call speaker and a microphone, while the top is occupied by an IR port window and a noise canceler hole. The smartphone has lost a 3.5 mm output, but the included adapter brightens up the situation a little. What to do, this is the trend today. The back of the device has a slightly protruding dual camera module, a dual-tone backlight and a fingerprint sensor that works great. The flagship weighs 173 grams, while its proportions are no higher than 152.6 x 72.4 x 7.6 mm.

Display

The developers tried to equip their brainchild with an IPS screen, which you can only rejoice at. Not only is it completely frameless, but it also produces high-quality images. Yes, it clearly falls short of AMOLED technology, but the lag is not noticeable. The company is not chasing record resolution, limiting itself to a modest Full HD format. For the 5.5-inch diagonal available here, this is enough. Pixel density - 403 ppi. The display characteristics are flagship - maximum viewing angles, decent brightness range, rich color palette. Gorilla Glass has a cool oleophobic coating.

Technical parameters and performance

The computing capabilities of the device are impressive. The hardware content allows the Nubia Z17 model to have absolutely no problems with tasks of any complexity. And all because the new product is based on the powerful Snapdragon 835 chipset. This eight-core processor with a 10-nanometer manufacturing process does not heat up well under heavy loads. The graphics subsystem here matches the processor - Adreno 540 at 710 MHz. Those who constantly feel a lack of RAM will be happy, because the new flagship is equipped with a high-speed LPDDR4x module of 6 or 8 GB. Although support for memory cards is not provided, there is no need to be upset; a 64 or 128 GB UFS 2.1 drive is enough for everyone. This is a real monster when it comes to performance. And the AnTuTu benchmark confirms these words, rating the device very highly, namely 175 thousand points.

Connectivity and sound quality

As befits a flagship, it has in its arsenal all the wireless modules you can imagine. We get Bluetooth 4.1, Wi-Fi dual-band, NFC and an IR emitter. Responsible for geopositioning GPS systems and GLONASS. There is no FM radio here. All the necessary 4G frequencies are available, even for the widespread B20 band.

Unfortunately, the device cannot boast of stereo sound. The speaker on the bottom edge, although there is only one here, sounds very high quality, but the volume level is average. The sound on headphones will not disappoint anyone, it has always been strong point Nubia products. And the absence of a dedicated audio chip does not spoil this impression. You can improve the sound using Dolby Atmos technology.

Autonomy ZTE Nubia Z17

The phone is powered by a 3200 mAh battery. The operating time is standard for a modern top-end device - a day with moderate use. There is fast charging, where would you be without it. 4.0+ technology makes it possible to charge up to 50 percent from zero in just 25 minutes.

Software part

As software, we are offered a nice Nubia UI 5.0 shell based on Android 7.1.1. It has a lot of advantages, such as the mode of dividing the working area of the display into two windows, new system energy savings, improved gestures and beautiful animations. It is functional, but at the same time not difficult to understand. It has its own zest, despite its similarity with other popular shells. It can be seen that from year to year the developers are honing it, trying to make it even better in terms of design and convenience. And the fruits of their efforts are visible.

Cameras ZTE Nubia Z17

The pride of the flagship, without exaggeration, is its dual camera. The only thing we can complain about is the lack of optical stabilization. But in general, the smartphone, using the main dual photo module 12 + 23 MP with an aperture of f/1.8 and f/2.0, takes simply gorgeous pictures, not inferior in this regard to its direct competitor, which, by the way, also does not have optical stabilization. The color rendition of the photographs is excellent, objects are obtained with high detail. The background blur effect works as expected. The camera is equipped with Dual Pixel fast focusing, 2x optical zoom, RAW mode and the ability to record videos in 4K. Demanding users may find the video they shoot to be disappointing because it lacks smoothness. There is a new advanced interface NeoVision 7.0 with a lot of settings and modes. In general, the Chinese provided us with an excellent camera phone. The front camera definitely keeps up with the main one, self-portraits come out with maximum clarity, correct white balance and a wide coverage angle. Its resolution is 16 megapixels, the aperture used is f/2.0.

Conclusion

Pros of ZTE Nubia Z17:

  1. powerful camera;
  2. stylish design;
  3. high-quality display without frames;
  4. advanced hardware.

Cons of ZTE Nubia Z17:

  1. no optical stabilization;
  2. You cannot connect 3.5mm headphones.
Definitely, the Chinese brand’s flagship turned out to be a success. This is a worthy successor to last year’s model, which was loved by many. The frameless screen alone is worth it, and let’s also add a powerful processor, a ton of memory and excellent cameras. If you don't mind the missing 3.5mm jack, then the Nubia Z17 could be a great choice. But it will be extremely difficult for this smartphone on the market, since it has very strong competitors in the Middle Kingdom. For the most affordable version of the 6gb / 64gb device, the official price tag in China is $413, which is very good.

You can buy ZTE Nubia Z17 at the best price.

Every year hundreds or even thousands of flagships appear on the market and regular smartphones. Choosing something suitable for yourself is not easy. But there are brands that are easy to trust, and smartphones made by them can be bought without any worries. The ZTE company is one of the world's recognized manufacturers of gadgets. This spring, she pleased us with the release of a new gadget, which has every chance of becoming not just popular, but a real hit. At least he has everything he needs for this.

Just some buyers who have already used the ZTE Nubia Z17 smartphone claim that despite the good parameters and the well-known brand, the device turned out to be average. We won’t say that it’s completely bad, but, as they say on the forums, “damp”. It could have been improved a little more, and it could have turned out to be a really good gadget. Let's see what's wrong with it.

When starting to review the Nubia Z17 smartphone, the first thing the user pays attention to is the parameters. The Chinese did a good job assembling the flagship. For example, there is not one rear camera, but two: 23 MP and 12 MP. Also, there is a more than good Snapdragon 835 processor and several versions with different RAM parameters - a maximum value of 8 GB, which allows you to easily play bulky games directly on the phone. In addition, Nubia Z17 has Quick Charge 4.0 fast charging mode, thanks to which the smartphone is charged by 50% in just 20-25 minutes.

Here is a more detailed list of the characteristics of the smartphone:

  • The Nubia smartphone comes in several colors: red, gold, blue, black;
  • The body is made of metal and the screen is made of tempered glass Gorilla Glass 5;
  • The display is of high quality, on an LTPS matrix. The screen diagonal is 5.5 inches with a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels and a density of 403 ppi. Coverage 96% NTSC. Brightness indicators are 450 nits. The screen takes up about 76% of the entire front panel;
  • The smartphone processor is 8-core Snapdragon 835, 4 Kryo 280 cores with a frequency of up to 2.45 GHz and 4 Kryo 280 cores with a frequency of up to 1.9 GHz. Process technology 10nm, 64-bit;
  • There is a wonderful graphics controller: Adreno 540 with a frequency of up to 710 MHz;
  • RAM indicators from 6 to 8 GB. RAM standard LPDDR4X dual-channel type 1866 MHz;
  • The built-in memory operates according to the UFS 2.1 standard, and the volume ranges from 64 to 128 GB, depending on the configuration;

  • There are two cameras. The main one consists of two modules: Sony IMX362 with 23 megapixels and Sony IMX318 with 12 megapixels. There is a 6-layer lens, optical stabilization and electronic type, autofocus, zoom, dual-type flash. The front camera is also quite strong – 16 megapixels. The sensor is developed by Samsung and there are five lenses. Viewing angle front camera 80 degrees;
  • There is a fingerprint scanner;
  • Built-in battery 3200 mAh (Quick Charge 4.0);
  • OS Android 7.1 Nougat. There is a Nubia UI 5.0 shell.

Moreover, the cost of this gadget starts from four hundred dollars, which is quite a lot. But the cost, judging by the characteristics, justifies itself.

Technical parameters and performance

Judging by the characteristics, the computing capabilities of the smartphone should be impressive. In fact, that's how it is. No matter how difficult the task is, this gadget will not have any problems in solving it. The fact is that manufacturers decided to rely on the super-powerful Snapdragon 835 chipset and they were right.

The advantage of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 is that it can process any games with relative ease, including those that have been released recently. Even Microsoft took notice of this chip, wanting to use it for its computers. But now it’s on a smartphone, even a flagship one. You can run a full-fledged Windows 10 on it without any problems, not to mention some games.

By power ZTE phones The Z17 we are reviewing will be relevant for at least three or four years. So this is a good investment for the future. Now there are few flagships offering up to 8 GB of RAM and an operating frequency of 1866 MHz, and it works in dual-channel mode. At the same time, the smartphone practically does not heat up, except for those cases when it needs to perform work that requires high load.

The graphics subsystem is also powerful, so as not to “let down” the processor - Adreno 540 at 710 MHz. In general, this is a real performance monster, even if it does not involve the use additional card memory. But it is doubtful that anyone will need it with 128 GB of internal memory.

If you need any more evidence, here are the results of the AnTuTu benchmark, which amount to 175 thousand points. This is a very high figure even for a flagship.

Cameras Nubia Z17

To begin with, there is not just one camera on this flagship - there are three. Two on the back panel and one on the front. In principle, this technology is no longer new for flagships, as it allows you to take high-quality photos in any environment. Is it night outside? This gadget will not only do good photo, the picture will show your surroundings better than if you looked with your own eyes. Only a few smartphones are capable of this. And certainly their cost would be much more than the stated four or five hundred (depending on the configuration).

  1. The main module is a duo of Sony IMX362 (23 MP) and Sony IMX318 (12 MP). The aperture of the installed lenses is incredible: f/2.0 and f/1.8. There is not only optical stabilization, but also electronic stabilization, which for some reason is constantly forgotten. But in vain, because thanks to this symbiosis you can shoot video in 4K resolution.

From the latest Samsung gadgets, Nubia plagiarized Dual technology Pixel, thanks to which the camera can focus in 0.03 seconds. And thanks to double optical zoom, the person in the photo will look more attractive.

  1. The front camera is just a dream for a person who cannot live without selfies. To take the photo yourself, the company used an excellent 16 MP camera from Samsung. Of course, it can’t compare with the main camera, but it also has good parameters. In particular, a viewing angle of 80 degrees and an f/2.0 aperture.

Nubia Z17 Camera Features:

  • Good sharpness and detail, but some photos are noisy;
  • There are no problems with night photographs, but only until you transfer them to your computer. Perhaps these are features of the flagship screen, but photos look better on a smartphone than on a computer;
  • The HDR mode on the camera lived up to expectations - the pictures are more than high quality;
  • Portrait mode also works well, but only if there is good lighting.

We won’t talk about the video for a long time. In this case better times to see is to hear a hundred times.

Weakness

As we said at the beginning, some users are not very happy with the gadget, despite its powerful hardware. The problem is in the shell. It is too crude, which does not allow you to fully use the extensive capabilities of the gadget. A Russian user may find the following shortcomings:

  • The firmware works, but for some reason it is not always correct;
  • The interface is not responsive;
  • For some reason, access to some menu items is lost.

To remove these troubles, you can try installing a cleaner program and using it periodically. But we hope that in its future work the company will take into account the errors and get rid of them.

Introduction

Despite the fact that the ZTE Nubia Z17 device was released last summer, its hardware will remain relevant for at least another couple of years, and the price is Chinese online stores now it is about 26,000 rubles.

For this money, Nubia Z17 gives the user the following things: powerful processor Qualcomm Snapdragon 835, as much as 6 GB of RAM, two main cameras with background blur functions, NFC chip, QC 4+ fast charging and Android versions 7.1.1. By the way, the screen frames on the right and left are very thin – 2 mm each. An option for those who do not accept the 18:9 aspect ratio, but want a frameless design. Fans of IR transmitters will also be happy with ZTE.

Looking ahead, I will say that the Z17 is “lightning” in terms of speed of work in the interface and with applications: there is no delay at all between switching programs or settings.

Besides, in operating system There are a large number of features and the main one is real - two-window multitasking: you can run anything from above and below on the display.

Design, dimensions, control elements

The design of the ZTE Nubia Z17 is quite calm and familiar. Nothing original can be distinguished. The design of the device is typical of past years; there is no elongated FullVision display, but there are thin frames on the right and left - only 2 mm. Many people will be interested in this approach, because the 16:9 aspect ratio is preserved, which means that there will be more information about the width than with 18:9 screens.

I saw two colors on sale: black and gold. However, you can also find black and gold, red and blue.

The front panel is protected by Corning glass. According to some information, this is the third generation. In any case, after several weeks of active use, not a single deep scratch remained on the screen. Of course, there is an oleophobic coating, the quality is good.

Almost the entire back panel is metal. It contains antenna strips. Given the somewhat meager official information, we finally managed to find out that Nubia Z17 is protected from water. Unfortunately, the standard is not specified. Therefore, most likely, just from splashes.

In my copy, the back panel was matte, fingerprints did not remain.

The phone feels familiar in your hand, since the body has a normal shape. The thickness of the device is relatively small - 7.6 mm, weight is 173 grams. After Apple iPhone 8 Plus (my main smartphone) ZTE feels lighter. The Nubia Z17 is more convenient to use than the device from Apple, that’s a fact.

On the front of the device at the top there is a camera, light and proximity sensors, and a speaker. It is loud, the sound is very clear, the timbre is pleasant, all frequencies can be heard: low, medium, and high.

Under the display there is a branded glowing ring and two buttons on the sides (they can be reassigned in the settings). The ring acts as an indicator of missed events and battery charge. In the settings you can easily set the brightness of the light (manually/automatically), turn it on/off when the battery is charging, when touched, or select “Do not disturb” for a certain period of time.

At the bottom there is a microphone, a USB Type-C connector and a speakerphone. You may have already noticed that there is no 3.5 mm audio output on the case. In my subjective opinion, this whole idea of “removing” the mini-jack is stupid. I mean not only a specific device, but in general: 3.5 mm is movable, thin, you can find a connector straight, L-shaped, at an angle, in general, whatever you want. And USB-C, although flat, is wide and motionless. Adapters, as you understand, are just crutches.

The power button and volume rocker key are on the right, and on the left is a metal slot for two nano SIM cards. You won't find a microSD card in the Z17, so think about storage capacity first. Personally, 64 GB is enough for me even in the iPhone 8 Plus.

At the top end there is a second microphone for noise reduction and an IR transmitter. If you were looking for a phone with IR, then take a closer look at the Z17, as there are almost no devices with this feature now.

On the reverse side there is a ring that houses a fingerprint scanner (fast, accurate), a module with two cameras and a double flash of different colors.

In general, the ZTE Nubia Z17 is a standard phone without any tricky curved displays or imaginary framelessness. Easy to handle, well assembled and made of good materials.

ZTE and Apple iPhone 8 Plus

Display

This device uses a screen with a diagonal of 5.5 inches. Physical size– 68x121 mm, frame on top – 15 mm, bottom – 16 mm, on the right and left – approximately 2 mm. There is an anti-reflective coating, which is quite effective.

The display resolution of Nubia Z17 from ZTE is FullHD, that is, 1080x1920 pixels, aspect ratio - 16:9, density - 400 pixels per inch. Matrix from Japan Display (IPS) without on-cell air gap.

Screen viewing angles are maximum, no distortion. The maximum brightness of white color is 432 cd/m2, the maximum brightness of black color is 0.565 cd/m2, contrast is 770:1.

Judging by the calibrator data, the ZTE matrix produces excellent rich colors: all parameters are larger than the sRGB triangle. But the gray screen of the Nubia Z17 is a big lie.

There is an “Eye protection mode” in the settings. The screen is “flooded” with warmer shades of colors. Intensity and on/off time You can choose the mode yourself.

Battery

The ZTE Nubia Z17 uses a non-removable lithium polymer (Li-Pol) battery with a capacity of 3200 mAh.

The operating time of the device is typical for most similar devices with IPS matrices: about a day with a maximum amount of screen time of 3.5 – 4.5 hours. The smartphone plays 8 hours of HD video (MP4) at 100% brightness of the matrix backlight and sits down after 5 hours under the load of 3D toys (Marvell: Contest of Champions).

With battery charging, everything is very good here: thanks to Quick Charge from Qualcomm, the battery gets 50% charge in just 20 minutes. And it takes about an hour for 100% “filling”.

Communication capabilities

The device operates in 2G (850/900/1800/1900 MHz)/3G (850/900/1900/2100 MHz)/LTE (B1/B3/B5/B7/B8/B12/B20). Two SIM cards in nano format. VoLTE and LTE CAT 6 frequency aggregation technologies are supported.

There is NFC, but without Mifare Classic and Mifare Ultralight. Apparently, due to the metal case for proper operation with NFC you have to touch the phone to the terminal not with the back, but with the front. Moreover, the distance should be no more than 5 - 10 mm.

The rest is standard for any Android smartphone: Wi-Fi b/g/n/ac two bands, Bluetooth 4.1, USB 2.0 with OTG support. Present GPS navigation, A-GPS, GLONASS, BDS. Accuracy up to 10 meters, sensitivity is average.

Memory and memory card

There are several versions of the Z17: 6/8 GB of LPDDR4x RAM and 64/128 GB of internal memory (UFS 2.1). We ended up with the 6/64 GB version. The speed of RAM is almost 6000 MB/s, the read/write speed of internal memory is 812/222 MB/s. The reading is impressive, but the writing could easily be more!

Cameras

Trend recent years- two cameras. ZTE did not lag behind, so in Nubia Z17 we see two main camera modules.

One sensor has a resolution of 12 MP (f/1.8, 1/2.55", 1.4 µm), and the second has a resolution of 23 MP (f/2.0). The increase in the number of megapixels was done so that it was possible to create double digital zoom as if without loss in quality. Interestingly, the device recognizes the lighting level and, depending on this, switches cameras. Like Apple: there is little light - the main module and digital zoom are used, a lot of light - an additional module and optical zoom. Only here the additional one has a high resolution and, due to it, improves the picture at 2x magnification (if there is enough light).

In addition, the second camera is used to create a bokeh effect. In Nubia Z17 you can choose a soft aperture from 1 to 16. Moreover, there is a certain corrector for this function. I don’t understand the essence of this thing - the frames come out the same.

Regarding bokeh, I can say this: it almost always works well, definitely better than in cheap “trash phones”. I think it’s a long way from Apple’s level, since the frame is not decomposed into a “depth of field map.” That’s why it “soaps” along the contour. However, quite correctly.

As for the quality of photos from Nubia Z17, it is at a very high level! Excellent detail, little noise, no artifacts or “soap” in the corners. Due to DualPixel technology, focusing speed is instantaneous.

In the “Family Camera” section (I think the Chinese translated this item incorrectly) there is a large number of effects and shooting modes: multi-photo, creating a picture with a beam of light, starry sky, “slo-mo”, macro, “time lapse” and others. It is possible to shoot in DNG format, and by choosing cameras.

Comparison

There are a lot of “jokes” of all kinds, but they all seem to be unfinished, like “it will do.”

The smartphone records video in resolutions up to 4K (30 fps)/1080p (60 fps). The quality is very good, the focus is instant. In low light conditions, the number of frames does not decrease. Front camera – 1080p and 30 fps. The quality is also nice.

Overall, I'm 100% happy with the Z17. Perhaps the best among those that I have tested recently (I mean Chinese devices).

Performance and OS

In this section, you can only write one thing - Qualcomm Snapdragon 835. I am sure that the chipset needs no introduction and everyone understands perfectly well that this moment it is the most productive solution. I think its power will last for another 3-4 years. Unless, of course, you increase the screen resolution beyond QHD.

ZTE smartphone Nubia Z17 is lightning fast! There is no startup delay in any application. It seems that the device simply “pulls” programs and various settings from RAM. No brakes, no microlags.

Another question - software. Here the Chinese guys made a mistake. Programs crash periodically (every two or three days), constant glitches with Google Play(I can’t install applications for hours), the translation leaves much to be desired (almost all “apps” have Chinese or English “tails”). However, the “tails” are clear: the Z17, as far as I understand, is available exclusively in its native market, since on the official website in the catalog the smartphone can only be found in the Chinese section.

The system is Google Android version 7.1.1 with its own Nubia UI 5.0 shell. The main difference between the proprietary UI: only the notification panel drops out from the top, and fast access to Wi-Fi/Bluetooth and other things is launched by swiping from the bottom up. Another cool feature is split screen. Here it is even, that is, absolutely any application can be launched either from above or from below simultaneously with other applications/games/settings. For example, on the upper half of the display a game is running, and on the lower half you continue to communicate in Telegram.

ZTE Nubia Z17 uses a single speaker for hands-free output. Its volume is high, the quality is normal: the sound is flat, high-frequency.

The smartphone supports DolbyAtmos technology. In the sound settings there is a special item with the same name. Auto volume, speech correction, surround sound are selected. Plus the equalizer is adjustable. It is visual and does not indicate frequencies.

I tested the sound in three-driver Meizu Flow and Bose QC 35 II. Conclusions on Meizu: extremely pleasant mid frequencies, expressive high frequencies, but low frequencies choke somewhere at a frequency of 100 Hz. Bose plays about the same over the wire and without switching on. But if you turn it on, the sound is transformed: you can hear powerful low frequencies, as well as mids and highs. Still, the electronics of the QC 35 II “pull out” not the coolest sounding devices!

Conclusion

I can't say that the ZTE Nubia Z17 made a big impression on me. Apparently, because in a short time I have already gotten used to smartphones with FullVision displays. And the usual 16:9 screen ratio is perceived as somewhat archaic.

The device from ZTE will be of interest primarily to those who do not accept all these newfangled trends in the structure of screens: sometimes curved, sometimes elongated. The Z17 simply made thin side frames for better one-handed grip and kept the display diagonal at 5.5 inches in the body of a 5-inch gadget.

Disadvantages of the device

  • "Damp" firmware;
  • Average operating time for a 3200 mAh battery;
  • No memory card slot.

Pros of the device

  • Adequate price;
  • Powerful hardware: Snapdragon 835 processor, 6 GB RAM, built-in UFS 2.1 memory;
  • The main camera is “the best”!
  • Very fast interface!
  • Good quality screen matrix;
  • Loud and high-quality conversational speaker.

Those who are obsessed with cameras in smartphones should appreciate the capabilities of the Nubia Z17. In fact, only because of the cameras can you consider a model for purchase. Even I’m now wondering whether to use the Z17 as my main smartphone...

The smartphone turned out to be quite compact, with an original appearance.

The declared dimensions of the ZTE Nubia Z17 are 152.6 × 72.4 × 7.6 mm, which is miniature for such a screen diagonal. The weight of the model is rather large - 173 grams. The same one in larger sizes turns out to be lighter - only 161 grams.

The front panel of the smartphone is distinguished by the absence of side frames around the screen. But they are above and below the screen, and quite wide. As a result, the display occupies almost 75% of the front panel area, which is no longer impressive and blurs the entire effect. For comparison, a virtually frameless display occupies 84% of the front panel area.

On the back of the smartphone there is a dual camera and a fingerprint scanner. The location of the latter looks good - symmetrically in the center. Note that it will be much more convenient to use than a scanner on, which is shifted to the side.

You can buy ZTE Nubia Z17 in several colors: blue (Aurora Blue), black and gold (Black Gold), black (Obsidian Black), gold (Solar Gold) and red (Flame Red).

Screen

The Nubia Z17's display stands out for its wide color gamut, although its other parameters are quite typical by the standards of modern flagships.

The screen matrix is made using IPS technology and is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass. With a diagonal of 5.5 inches, its resolution is 1920x1080 pixels. This ratio gives a density of 403 ppi, which is not so much. Increasingly in flagship smartphones we can see qHD screens (for example, in).

Camera

In terms of its characteristics, the Nubia Z17 cameras look very interesting.

The main camera is a two-camera module - 23 MP with f/2.0 aperture and 12 MP with f/1.8 aperture. There is phase detection autofocus and dual LED flash. Among the stated features is a 2x optical zoom, like the . Video shooting is possible in resolutions up to 4K (3840×2160 pixels).

The front camera resolution is 16 MP and the aperture is f/2.0. Nothing more is known about her.

Communications

The communications suite of the ZTE Nubia Z17 is quite flagship. Unfortunately, the manufacturer did not equip the smartphone with FM radio and a mini-Jack connector for. Instead, the smartphone is equipped with an infrared port for controlling various equipment, for example.

The following set of communications and ports is declared:

  • Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac, DLNA, Wi-Fi Direct
  • Bluetooth 4.1 LE, A2DP
  • GPS, GLONASS, Beidou
  • USB Type C, USB On-The-Go
  • IR port
  • gyroscope
  • compass.

Battery

It is expected that the autonomy of the ZTE Nubia Z17 will be no worse than other flagship smartphones.

The phone is equipped with a non-removable 3200 mAh battery. This should be enough for a full day of heavy use or 2-3 days of moderate use. Also, according to the manufacturer, ZTE Nubia Z17 is the first device to support new technology fast charging Qualcomm Quick Charge 4.0. Thanks to it, you can charge your smartphone battery from 5 to 50% charge in just 25 minutes.

Performance

The hero of our review claims to be at the top of the smartphone performance ratings. Its “heart” is the powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 835, which has 4 cores at 2.35 GHz and 4 cores at 1.9 GHz. The younger version has 6 GB of RAM on board, while the top version has as much as 8 GB. However, today such a volume is excessive and is rather a reserve for the future. In everyday life you are unlikely to notice the difference.

The performance of the ZTE Nubia Z17 should be more than enough for both ordinary tasks and any modern games.

Memory

Three versions of the ZTE Nubia Z17 will be available in stores, differing in the amount of RAM and storage:

  • 6 GB RAM, 64 GB
  • 6 GB RAM, 128 GB
  • 8 GB RAM, 128 GB.

Unfortunately, it is not yet known whether the smartphone supports memory cards.

Peculiarities

From interesting features smartphone, you can note ZTE’s own shell - NubiaUI, installed on top. It supports gesture control and has large quantity settings than stock Android.

Among the features of the case, we can highlight protection against liquid ingress, although the exact class is not specified. We can assume that it will be no lower than in, which is not afraid of rain. Also distinctive feature let's call a smartphone the absence of frames on the sides of the screen.
