Windows 10 does not save. Reset all network adapters

An incredible number of Windows 10 users are complaining about a problem where, after restarting the computer or updating the desktop state, its settings are lost. This is expressed in the fact that the icons are moved to the left side of the screen and sorted by name, regardless of how they were located, sorted before and what they looked like (tile, table). The article discusses how to fix this problem and also provides possible reasons her appearance.

Let's start, as usual, with the most simple methods solutions to the problem, among them there is not one that helps out the majority Windows users 10.

The first thing you should do is deactivate the option to automatically sort desktop icons. Call up the context menu of the free area of the desktop, select “View” and uncheck the box next to “Arrange icons automatically”.

Windows recovery and registry backup

The first solution proposed by an enthusiast (and not by the Tens developers) is as follows: perform a rollback operating system until the moment when everything was fine. If the solution is not satisfactory, we create a restore point, return to the moment when the problem did not exist, reserve the registry branch responsible for the configuration of the Aero graphical shell, return to the created rollback point (where the desktop settings are reset) and restore the registry settings. Convoluted scheme? Let's take a closer look at it.

The easiest way is to launch the Control Panel applet called "Recovery" or enter keyword into the search bar.

  • Click “Recovery Settings...”.
  • Select the system volume and click “Configure”.

  • Move the switch to the “Enable system protection” position if it is otherwise.

  • Click “OK” to close the window and click “Create” to create a rollback point, enter its name and click “OK” again.

  • Click on the link “Start recovery...” and click “Next” in the window that opens.

  • We select the rollback point when the desktop settings in Windows 10 were saved.

  • Click “Finish”.
  • After restarting Windows 10, open the registry editor by entering “regedit” in the search bar/run window.

  • Go to the HKEY_CU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows directory and reserve the “Shell” branch, through the context menu or the “File” item of the main menu.

  • We specify the hive storage directory and roll back, as before, to the last recovery point created in step No. 5.
  • We run the created file and agree to make changes to the registry.

  • Restart Windows 10 or the “exporer.exe” process through the “Task Manager”.

Editing new registry settings

In the "ten" the value of one of the registry keys has changed, indicating the location of the new dll library. Some applications that are not adapted for the “top ten” do not understand such settings, forcing the OS to use the old library. This leads to resetting the settings for the location of icons on the desktop.

  • To correct the misunderstanding, we open

in the registry editor.

  • Find the key “(Default)” or “By default” and check its value.

If it is equal to “%SystemRoot%\system32\windows.storage.dll”, go to the next section, otherwise replace it with the required one.

Note. The screenshot shows a third-party registry editor, Registry Workshop, and not the standard Windows 10 utility.

  • We restart the Explorer shell, as in step No. 13, or restart the PC to apply the settings.

Third-party software is a source of trouble

A large number of installed programs increases the likelihood that one of them is the source of the problem when Windows 10 does not save the settings for the arrangement of icons on the desktop.

One of them is antivirus program ESET from the company of the same name, formerly called NOD32. If installed, update the application and antivirus databases, then restart your computer. If that doesn't help, try removing the antivirus completely. This is done through the Control Panel applet called Programs and Features.

The fact is that many system components start and work in the background (the user often does not see the interface of these elements) and can cause problems with the operation of the Windows 10 graphical shell.

  • We enter account with administrator privileges.
  • Execute “msconfig” through the search bar to bring up the system configuration menu.

  • Go to the “Services” tab and check the “Do not show Microsoft services” checkbox.

  • Uncheck the boxes next to the remaining items or click “Disable all”.

  • Switch to startup and click “Launch task manager”.

Management of the list of applications launched after loading the OS in the Top Ten has been moved to the Task Manager.

  • In it we also open the “Startup” tab and select “Disable” in the context menu of each element.

  • Let's reboot.

Happened? We look for the problematic application located in the startup list, activating one or more of them one by one and restarting the PC.

The problem is with the graphics drivers

The last thing to do if Windows 10 does not save the state of your desktop icons is to update your video card and monitor drivers.

In order not to travel through sites in search of suitable (fresh) software for your computer, no need to wait for downloading installation files, unpacking them and not performing routine clicks on installer buttons, refusing to add extraneous software to the system, we will use the popular driver update utility DriverBooster.

  • We go to the Russian version of the official website of the Iobit company and download the application.

  • We run the installer and refuse to install SystemCare Free.

  • Launch DriverBooster and wait for the scan to complete.

  • Click “Update” next to the icon graphics adapter and monitor one by one or “Update all” if you are using a registered/hacked version of the utility.
  • We reboot the computer.

Snappy Drivers will also help you update your video adapter and monitor drivers. Sometimes the Center copes with the task Windows updates, but you shouldn’t rely heavily on its functionality. Especially when loading a driver for an old monitor.

I encountered an interesting problem when trying to update the current Windows builds 10 to 1803 (April 2018 Update) using an ISO file. At the stage of selecting system parameters that need to be saved during the upgrade, the option to save personal files and applications was unavailable, and the wizard offered only one upgrade option with deleting all the user’s personal data and applications (option Don't save anything). At the same time, the following message was displayed at the bottom of the window:

In English Windows versions the error looks like this:

You can’t keep Windows settings, personal files, and apps because your current version of Windows might be installed in a unsupported directory.

At first it seemed to me that updating the Windows 10 build from 1709 to 1803 while preserving user data would not work and that I would have to completely reinstall the system in clean installation mode. But the problem turned out to be only that the update wizard could not find the standard Windows 10 application folders (looking ahead, I will say that in my case for some reason they were specified incorrectly).

You can fix the problem by editing the registry. For this,

Edition, bitness and language of the new Windows 10 build iso file must match the OS installed on your computer. Information about the original system language can be obtained like this: DISM /online /get-intl

In our example it is clear that the original language of the system is Russian (Default system UI language: ru-RU). In some cases, to update Windows 10 correctly, you need to remove everything additional packages localization.

Also check that you have not redirected the standard Windows application folders or the user profile directory (C:\Users\) to another drive using symbolic links. This could also be causing the problem.

Why does the "You don't have permission to save files in this location" error appear in Windows 10 and how to fix it?

Error: "You do not have permission to save files in this windows location 10"

These instructions are intended for those who, while downloading a file through a browser or simply copying it to the system drive C, encountered the following error (of course, the file name and path may be different):

Full message text

First you need to find out why this happened. So, if, when you try to save a file, a sign appears that says “You do not have permission to save files in this location in Windows 10,” there may be several reasons for this. There are two main ones:

  1. The user tries to save a file to the root folder hard drive, on which Windows was installed (most often drive C).
  2. Windows 10 was installed on top of another operating system of this family, and nowhere but system disk, the file cannot be saved.

It is not saved to drive C, Windows folder, etc.

The problem arises due to the fact that the system is initially protected from the possible penetration of viruses that the user receives as part of the downloaded file. The error window prompts you to save the file to a folder that will be safe and recommended for of this type(for example, for pictures they will recommend “Images”, for audio recordings – “Music”, etc.).

The solution is simple - one of three options:

  1. Agree to the system's proposal.
  2. Click “no” and specify another path - for example, to a special download folder.
  3. Select item 1 or 2, then move from the folder where the file was saved to the desired one.

Attention! It is not recommended to use the third option in relation to files with .exe permission, as this risks infecting the computer.
For those who continue to want to save files in the wrong place, contrary to recommendations, the algorithm in the next subsection will be useful.

An error occurs when trying to save to a non-system drive.

If a single download is intended, it is easier to save the file where the system suggests and then move it to the desired location. Otherwise it is better to do additional settings permissions for folders and files:

1. Open Explorer.

Opening Windows Explorer

2. Right-click on the shortcut to the folder or local drive where you want to save the files (for example, to drive C:):

Right click on drive C

3. Select "Properties".

C drive properties

4. Switch to the “Security” tab.

Go to the “Security” tab

5. Click “Change”.

Changing security settings

6. In the window that opens there should be a “Verified” item. If yes, move on to the next step. If there is no such item, you need to create it. To do this, click on “Add”, and then in the window that opens, enter the phrase “Verified”, then click on “OK”.

Search for a user or group

7. In the “Allow” column, check all the boxes except the first one – “Full access”. Click “OK”.

Setting permissions for a user or group

Problem solved. Now you can easily save files to this folder or to this local drive.

After Windows installations 10 over previous version Windows You may find that when you try to save a file to another (non-system) partition, an error appears:

You do not have permission to save files in this location. Contact your network administrator for permission.

This is what the error window looks like when you try to save a file downloaded from the Internet directly to another (non-system) local drive in the browser" Mozilla Firefox":

Also, when copying or moving files to Windows Explorer You may see the following warning:

To copy to this folder you must have administrator rights

To avoid such an error or warning and to be able to save files to folders on other partitions of your hard drive, you need to configure permissions for such folders or partitions. The following operations can be applied to both a folder and a disk partition to obtain write permissions for all folders on the disk and for the disk as a whole.

In Windows Explorer, click on the folder (or Local disk), for which a warning or file writing error appears, right-click, switch to the "Security" tab and click on the "Change" button.

In the Groups or Users list, find and highlight Authenticated People. If there is no such item, click on the "Add" button.

In the dialog that appears, in the lower field, type the phrase “Verified” and click the “Check names” button.

The system will find and format the name of the found user group. Click on the "OK" button to add the user group.

In the previous dialog box, for the “Validated” item in the top list, check the boxes next to the items in the bottom list:

  • Change
  • Read and Execute
  • List of folder contents
  • Reading
  • Record

Attention: There is no need to tick the "Full access" box!

Click on the "Apply" button, wait until the operation is completed and click "OK".

As a result, in the security properties window you should have an "Authorized" item with the items listed above checked.

Close this window by clicking "OK".

That's all! Files should be saved without errors or warnings.
