Galaxy tab 2 technical specifications. Design and connectors

  • Tablet,
  • prefabricated charger (cable+block),
  • instructions,
  • warranty card.

Introduction

I really like the seven-inch tablet segment. These are compact and convenient devices that fit into a small bag or even a jacket pocket. At the same time, they are lighter and cheaper than their ten-inch counterparts. The model being reviewed today is the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0, a logical continuation and expansion of the line of compact tablets from Samsung.

Appearance, materials, control elements

The model is similar to most other tablets from Samsung and not only them.

On the right side there is a volume rocker and a power button. They have a short, soft stroke, and these buttons are convenient to use.

Card slots are located on the left microSD memory and SIM cards (for 3G versions). Both slots are covered with plugs; they hold up well and most likely will not come loose over time.

Below you can see the connector for your own charger, through which the tablet connects to the PC. To the right and left of it are speakers covered with a mesh and a microphone hole. The speakers have an average volume, but due to their location, sometimes you involuntarily cover them with your hand (if you hold the tablet horizontally).

Place for a 3.5mm headphone jack and another microphone was found at the top.

The entire front part is occupied by a screen and a black frame; above the screen there is a front camera eye and a speaker.

The device also has a rear camera located on the back. The back of the tablet itself is made of matte gray plastic. It is pleasant to the touch and wear-resistant, it does not leave scratches. We can only be glad that Samsung did not use its favorite gloss for the back.

By the way, a white version of the device has recently gone on sale.

There are no complaints about the assembly, unlike most budget tablets, which always creak somewhere, the assembly here is at a high level.

Screen

The tablet has a seven-inch display with a resolution of 1024x600 pixels. The screen is capacitive - supports up to ten simultaneous touches.

Matrix type - PLS (Samsung's own screens designed to compete with IPS). A feature of PLS matrices is soft and calm colors, in this regard they are completely opposite to SuperAMOLED. In the sun the image fades, but remains visible. It’s comfortable to watch videos on public transport, but at maximum brightness. The clarity of the picture is inferior to competitors with IPS matrices, but not much. The screen is covered protective glass Gorilla Glass, if you do not try to scratch the tablet on purpose, then there will be no scratches on it. I liked the display; although it is inferior to its IPS competitors, it is still at a decent level. At minimum brightness it is comfortable to read in the dark, maximum brightness is suitable for public transport.

The device has a light sensor responsible for operation automatic adjustment brightness, it didn’t always set the brightness correctly for me, so I used manual adjustment, fortunately you can quickly set a comfortable level through the status bar.

Comparison Galaxy screens Tab 2 7.0 and Digma iDs10:

Dimensions

The tablet is slightly thicker than the top-end Galaxy Tab 7.7 and the thin IconBIT NetTAB Matrix and slightly heavier than them. However, in comparison with other competitors, it has similar dimensions. The model is comfortable to hold with one or two hands for a long time, your hands do not get tired at all. It is also worth noting that the tablet is very compact, it fits even in the smallest bags, this is a common plus of seven-inch models.

  • Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0– (LxWxD) 194x122x11 mm, weight 344 grams
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7– (LxWxD) 197x133x8 mm, weight 335 grams
  • IconBIT NetTAB Matrix– (LxWxD) 188x123x10 mm, weight 308 grams
  • Huawei MediaPad – (LxWxD) 190x124x11 mm, weight 390 grams

Autonomous operation

A separate section in the settings is responsible for energy saving, where you can limit the processor frequency and configure the screen for less power consumption.

The device has a non-removable battery with a capacity of 4000 mAh. With an hour of reading and an hour of video at 70% brightness, its charge lasted for 3 days.

I also ran some battery tests under "clean load":

In video mode at maximum brightness and full volume in headphones, the tablet lasted 4 hours 45 minutes (an MX player with HW decoding was used). For the test, a file in HD resolution was used.

In reading mode (10% brightness, automatic page turning, airplane mode on), the tablet lasted 9 hours.

Overall, these are good results, I was pleased with the autonomy of the model.

Performance

Roma described the processor used in detail, let me quote a piece from his review Tab 2 10.1:

“This is where the main changes took place. Samsung abandoned the NVIDIA Tegra 2 chipset and installed the chipset of the American company Texas Instruments - OMAP 4430. Technical process - 45 nm, CPU instruction set - ARMv7, graphics accelerator - PowerVR SGX540. The processor is a dual-core Cortex-A9 with a clock frequency of 1 GHz. The chipset belongs to fourth generation OMAP, which contains the IVA3 hardware multimedia accelerator with programmable DSP, which allows you to encode/decode 1080p Full HD video".

The device has 1 GB random access memory, when turned on for the first time, about 400 MB are available to the user, this amount is enough to comfortably solve most problems. The capacity of the internal storage varies - two models will be available with 8 and 16 GB of internal memory.

As for performance, it is worth noting that the model is faster than its competitors when surfing the web. Unlike the same IconBIT Matrix, here you can comfortably use a browser. Pages load and turn quickly, there are no problems with this.

But when flipping through tables, there are still stutters, but this is clearly a problem with TouchWiz, not the processor, since there are no stutters in third-party launchers.

operating system

The model comes with pre-installed Android 4.0.3 and TouchWiz shell on top of it. With detailed Android review 4.0 can be found. I’ll tell you about the features of the new TouchWiz below.

The first thing that catches your eye is the similarity of the shell with the one installed in the Galaxy S3, for example, the application menu is designed in the same way, the same wallpaper is preinstalled.

The S Planner and Notes apps are also very similar to those in S3.

I'm glad that Samsung still provides its devices with a built-in file manager. Although it is simple, its functionality is sufficient for ordinary users.

The new models abandoned Swype and installed their own keyboard (which, again, is similar to that in the S3). This is a huge step back. I really liked Swype in Tab 7.7, but now I can't even install it on my tablet because it's not supported. Unlike the S3 keyboard, you can't enter text using gestures. The new keyboard, of course, is worse than Swype, but it is also quite convenient for input, especially in vertical mode; we are pleased with the numbers placed in a separate row.

You can make calls and send SMS from the tablet; proprietary applications are preinstalled for this. Unfortunately, there is no Russian layout on the dialer, and the quality of photos deteriorates after synchronization. In the address book you cannot even change the current contact, you can only add a new one.

In the status bar, in addition to the three usual buttons, they also added a quick screenshot. A short press on the button takes a screenshot and takes you to editing it, while a long press simply takes a screenshot. In the center of the status bar there is a button to open the panel quick access to popular actions. This could be a calendar, phone, SMS messages, mail, alarm clock and music. When you click on one of the shortcuts, a thumbnail of the application is called up. Looks unusual, but comfortable.

Of the interesting widgets, I would only note beautiful watch and a weather widget. By the way, unlike the Galaxy S3, here clicking on the clock widget brings up an alarm rather than time settings, and this is a big plus.

The shell makes the model different from competitors and recognizable. However, Samsung needs to work more carefully on it so that at least the tables stop slowing down.

Of the minuses, I would note the poor performance of the wallpaper with third-party launchers. In all third-party launchers (Y.shell, Go Launcher HD for Pad, Apex Launcher, Nova Launcher), the selected wallpaper increased in size, which is why the picture looked blurry. Also, my lock screen did not work, I reset the device, reflashed it, but none of this could solve the problem, perhaps this is only a drawback of my sample.

Multimedia

Tab 2 7.0 comes pre-installed with its own proprietary applications for music and video.

The music app is very similar to the Galaxy S3 in style. When first opened, the user is presented with three columns. The first contains options for sorting songs (by albums, artists, genres or folders), in the middle there is a list of all songs, and on the right (in horizontal mode) or below (vertical) there is a playback control panel and a list of songs in the order in which they will be played. The player supports the following formats: MP3, OGG, AAC-LC / AAC / AAC+ / eAAC+, AC-3, AMR-NB / WB, WMA, WAV, MID, IMY, FLAC. You can quickly control playback via the status bar or a separate widget whose dimensions are adjustable.

Video. The tablet supports many formats, since it uses the same processor as the older model, the results are the same, so I’ll give you a list from Roma’s review (I’ll separately note that I tested the same video files and the results were the same as in his list):

  • MKV (1080p, h264, High profile 4.1, 40 Mbit/s). The standard player does not play, MX Video player plays, but the video is very slow
  • MKV (1080p, vc1, ap13, 18 Mbps, AC3). The standard player does not show video, but there is sound. MX Video Player shows video, but slows down, there is sound
  • MKV (1080p, h264, High profile 4.1, 10 Mbit/s, DTS). The standard player shows video, but no sound. MXVP shows video, there is sound, but in “software” mode
  • MKV (720p, h264, High profile 5.1, 3 Mbit/s, Vorbis). No problem
  • MKV (480p, XViD, as15, 1 Mbit/s, AAC). The standard player does not play, everything is fine in MXVP (“software” mode)
  • MPEG (480p, 5 Mbps). The standard player does not play, everything is fine in MXVP
  • TS (720p, MPEG, AC3). The standard player does not play, in MXVP the sound is ahead of the video
  • AVI, MP4, FLV and 3GP standard player plays without problems.

Camera

The tablet has two cameras: rear - 3 MP and front - 0.3 MP. Roma described the camera interface in detail, I recommend that you read this part of the review.

The manufacturer decided to abandon autofocus in the rear camera, which immediately affected the quality of the pictures. I suggest you evaluate their quality yourself below.

The video is recorded in a resolution of 1280x720 pixels at 30 frames per second. Among other things, the front camera is supported Skype program, and you can use it for video calls.

Examples of photos taken with the main camera:

Examples of photos taken with the front camera:

Interfaces

There is a full set of wireless interfaces.

Wi-Fi (b/g/n)– the usual Wi-Fi module, works flawlessly. The network is not lost, the reception level is at the level of most other smartphones and tablets.

3G module- optionally available and Mobile Internet, works great. There are no complaints about the loss of the network.

GPS– used for navigation Google program Maps, a cold start takes about a minute, then satellites are searched for 20-30 seconds.

Bluetooth 4.0latest version features reduced energy consumption.

Conclusion

The average price of the Wi-Fi version is 9,500 rubles, and the version with 3G is 13,000 rubles. For this money you get a full-fledged (albeit small) tablet that does an excellent job with video, web surfing and reading. In addition, you can even make calls from it. Also, I would note the good assembly and materials as a plus.

Competitors

The Wi-Fi version has several competitors.

IconBIT MATRIX. A good model, a complete clone of Ainol Aurora, among the advantages I would note a better screen, less weight and thickness. Of the minuses - poor work with the browser and a disgusting assembly. The cost of the model is about 6 thousand, and now NetTAB Slim Pro is starting to replace it. I’m just planning to take this tablet for testing, however, if it doesn’t have problems with the assembly and the browser, then it will be a more serious competitor, because its price is only 6 thousand rubles.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus. An identical model from Samsung, but with a different processor, recently began receiving an update to 4.0. It costs a little more, I would rather focus on Tab 2 7.0.

The 3G version has a more worthy competitor - Huawei MediaPad. The average cost is 13 thousand. Its huge advantage is the screen and pure Android, as well as the monolithic aluminium case. Among the advantages of Tab 2 7.0 are the ability to make calls and higher brand awareness.

As a result, if you need a high-quality seven-inch tablet with 3G, then it is better to pay attention to the Huawei MediaPad, but if you want to save money and take a tablet only with Wi-Fi, then the Tab 2 7.0 is a good option, overpaying a couple of thousand compared to lesser-known ones models from iconBIT and others are definitely justified.

And in this review we will look at the younger model of this family – the Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0), which has a 7-inch display, but the differences between the two tablets do not end there. So, first things first.

Galaxy Tab 2 is very similar to its predecessor model P1000 from the line Galaxy tablets Tab. But it is worth noting that the thickness has decreased, now it is only 10.5 mm, and the surface has turned from a smooth gloss into matte gray plastic. The height and width of the device are 193.7x122.4 mm, and the weight is only 344 g. Given the relative lightness of the device, it is very comfortable to hold in your hand.

There is a touch display on the front side, and a camera “eye” on the back.

The assembly was performed at the proper level - there are no backlashes or squeaks during operation.

Performance, operating system and applications

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0), like the model with a 10.1-inch screen, has a dual-core TI OMAP 4430 processor, which has clock frequency 1 GHz. There is 1 GB of RAM, and 8, 16 or 32 GB of built-in flash memory, depending on the version. This parameter can be increased, since there is a special slot for memory cards with a maximum capacity of 32 GB. Taken together, these parameters provide fairly high performance that can satisfy almost any, even the most demanding user.

The tablet is under control operating system Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich with integrated TouchWiz shell.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0) has a standard set of applications: audio and video players, browser, e-mail client.

Real reviews of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2.7 tablet

Ilya

  • Working with Samsung Galaxy Tab 2.7.0 P3100 8Gb is bliss, because... After a month of use, I’m very happy with everything and I don’t even go near the computer. In addition, I’m thinking of replacing my computer with an even more powerful and larger tablet of this series, but I still don’t have enough programs to turn the tablet into a full-fledged one Personal Computer. At first I bought it as an addition to my smartphone, because... The tablet supported SIM cards (in other words, I didn’t even consider SIM-less tablets). And I received not only an add-on, but a full-fledged car with the Internet, which is always with me! I have no complaints about the device at all, and the size and speed of its operation simply amazes me! True, the accessories for it are very expensive, but this is unnecessary. Therefore my rating is a solid 5.

Oleg

  • I like the tablet, but for a long time I carried it without a case in transport, but I realized that it was unreliable, and now I choose a book case. I like that you can use a memory card to download files (both using the slot and using a card reader, which can be bought at any computer store), as well as the quality of working with the Internet using Opera browser. I also think that this tablet is very fast, convenient, holds a charge for a long time (enough for almost a day), does not heat up or discharge in standby mode, is equipped with basic programs and even an archiver. True, not all computers recognize the device as a flash drive.
  • I took the purchase of the tablet seriously, because... a lot of money... I looked closely for almost a month and finally decided on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2.7.0 P3100 8Gb, because... with its help, I could always have 2 active SIM cards, and also had the opportunity to constantly surf the Internet. I think that this model is the ideal combination of quality and price, weight and size, battery performance and interface. The tablet justifies itself and does not look bulky, and on the screen with its resolution you can watch any movies and constantly surf the Internet.

Sasha

  • I bought this model and have no regrets - the device itself is very cool, it’s easy to type texts on it and it even fits in a jeans pocket. Various applications and tasks are launched simultaneously, such as HD video, a lot of programs and GPS navigation and the device copes with them, although it heats up a little. I really don't like the camera, because... the photos turn out creepy, but this is not a minus, because... I never understood why there are cameras in phones and tablets, if they can hardly compare even with a point-and-shoot camera... The WiFi in the tablet is excellent, the connection is not interrupted, and therefore I can call the device excellent for work.

Maksim

  • If you are an illiterate person, then it will seem to you that the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2.7.0 P3100 8Gb has a “stainable” screen, an inconvenient keyboard in portrait mode, and it is impossible to remove standard applications, the sound of the tablet is not loud, the shell slows down, etc. But if you know at least a little about devices, you will understand that 8 GB of memory is enough for all applications and OS, the device supports memory cards - and this is a huge plus, all unused applications can be disabled, etc. I use the Galaxy Tab both as a tablet and as a phone and player, and so far there have been no complaints!

The world of seven-inch tablets did not exactly shake with Apple's entry into this market, but most likely this event will soon change it. Analysts are trumpeting with might and main the prospects of the segment, foreshadowing its rapid growth. The eternal rival of the apple company, Samsung, mastered the segment much earlier and released more than one seven-inch tablet into the world. Unlike last year's Galaxy Tab 7.7, today's hero Samsung review Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 is neither a flagship nor a prestige model. Nevertheless, its characteristics are worthy of respect and make those who need to take a closer look at it inexpensive tablet, which is convenient to carry with you every day.

Design and connectors

It’s not easy to describe the design of tablets in general, but the design Samsung tablets- doubly so. They are too similar to each other. The pictures, in principle, show that this is the child of its eminent Korean parent, but, unlike the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7, the body here is traditionally plastic, quite slippery to the touch. The back, fortunately, is not glossy. Several barely noticeable scratches appeared on it even before my intervention in his life. True, I don’t know how much time the sample I received for testing spent in operation.

From iPhone 4s

The thickness of 10 and a half millimeters does not allow the tablet to be considered very thin, but it still allows it to fit into the pockets of jackets or jeans (not just any, though). Although the book-shaped device weighing 342 grams, in my opinion, is more convenient to carry in a bag than in clothes. But this weight allows you to hold the tablet with one hand for quite a long time.

The top end contains an audio jack, the bottom - a pair of speakers and a charging socket.

On the right are the power and volume control buttons, and on the left side there is a place for a microSD card reader covered with a flap.

It will clearly be appreciated by those who are looking for an inexpensive tablet with a well-known name on the case and at the same time plan to frequently transfer data (the last phrase contains warm greetings to the Galaxy Nexus and its biggest drawback, the lack of memory expandability). The plastic of the case is quite simple, but durable: the tablet is assembled well, the parts are adjusted to each other, and there are no creaks when pressed.

Screen

1024x600 pixels is not God knows what resolution by today's standards, but it is much more important that the tablet does not have a TN matrix, but a PLS one. Let me remind you that PLS is a technology similar to IPS, only produced by Samsung. It’s similar in that it provides good viewing angles, no matter how you look at it, everything will be visible. However, in terms of clarity, brightness and contrast, it seemed to me that this screen is inferior to its mid-class IPS colleagues. The colors are not calm in an oriental way, somewhat pale, which, for me personally, is preferable to the flashy SuperAmoled colors.

On a sunny day, the screen is difficult to see, but the letters can be distinguished. But it’s better to set the brightness to maximum, and in general it’s better to adjust it manually: auto-correction does not always work correctly. It is convenient to read or watch a movie indoors using a tablet. The Galaxy Tab 2.7.0 reacts to touch quite sensitively and understands up to 10 fingers at the same time.

Comparison with iPhone screen 4S

Performance, functionality and software

The tablet has Android 4.0.4 with branded shell TouchWiz, in a version similar to the Samsung Galaxy SIII. For details we refer the reader to that review, but here we will briefly mention that this interface is quite close to pure Android, there is a convenient division into applications and widgets. Has a built-in file manager, a simple but convenient “program tracking” widget that allows you to quickly deal with the eternal Android problem- applications constantly hanging in the memory.

I also liked the cute clock widgets with an alarm clock, a program for writing notes (though only via the keyboard, without the ability to draw), a rather convenient S Planner organizer and, as always, not the most convenient browser.

Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 also has a “Contacts” item that pulls up information from Google account, and also, in the case of the 3G model, from the phone book.

The control keys here are on-screen, and in addition to the three standards, a button has also been added for quickly taking screenshots. This is convenient, but is it really necessary for the vast majority of users?

The multimedia capabilities of the tablet are quite good. Firstly, as always in the case of Samsung devices Galaxy Tab 2.7.0 supports many audio and video formats. So, you can listen to MP3, OGG, AAC, AMR-NB, WB, WMA, WAV, MID, IMY and, fortunately, FLAC. The sound from the speakers is of medium volume (at maximum you can watch a movie in a quiet place) and average level. Of course, not a music lover, but it will do for a tablet. In headphones it immediately becomes softer and more pleasant, quite clear, at about 80% volume, then wheezes slightly. True, the sound is flat, there is no special bass here.

A fairly progressive hardware platform - and the Texas Instruments OMAP 4430 chipset with the ARMv7 instruction set and the PowerVR SGX540 graphics accelerator is installed here - has an IVA3 multimedia accelerator, with the help of which video in 1080p resolution is encoded and decoded in hardware. I launched a FullHD video in MKV, it played generally without problems, although the picture began to slow down a couple of times. Overall, TouchWiz, although nice, is not the fastest shell. Sometimes the smooth transition between pages was lost, although I did not observe any critical “brakes.” The tablet demonstrates normal average results both in benchmarks and in games. Let's say Dead Trigger is quite possible to play. For toys and everything else in the device, 400 MB of RAM is available out of a total of 1 GB, and the storage capacity in our case was only 8 GB. However, there is an option with 16 GB, and fortunately there is a slot for microSD here.

The tablet found WiFi points quickly enough and did not lose them, but the GPS is not always stable: without the Internet, when driving in a car, it sometimes takes a very long time to find a location.

Camera

The main camera has a resolution of 3 MP, which, of course, is quite a bit. But its biggest problem is not the number of megapixels, but simple optics, lack of autofocus and flash. More or less decent pictures are obtained only with ideal lighting. However, tablets, even seven-inch ones, are not the most convenient tools for capturing the world around us. However, if really necessary, poor pictures can be taken, as well as videos in a resolution of 1280x720 pixels at 30 frames per second. Front-camera works for video calls. Tested: it works, you can recognize a person, however, if you are not in the twilight of a rainy day.

Autonomy

Under normal load (Internet, movies, music, reading - periodically throughout the day) with screen brightness varying from 70 to 100%, the tablet lasts about 2.5-3 days without recharging. The FullHD video with maximum screen brightness and sound volume, and WiFi turned on, Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 played for 4 hours 23 minutes. Decent performance, although somewhat behind the Nexus 7.

Competitors

Obviously, in the budget segment of 7-inch tablets, Nexus 7 is one of the main leaders, and it is the main competitor of the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0. At the same price, Google/ASUS Nexus 7 has a higher resolution screen and is somewhat faster. However, the lack of support for external media is a reason for many not to buy the brainchild of Google and ASUS, as is sometimes the lack of a 3G module. We received it for review Samsung version Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 without 3G costs about $200, while the 3G module adds another hundred to it. However, we have already released this very module, let’s see how quickly and at what price it will be available to us. Also worth mentioning is the Amazon Kindle Fire HD, which is slightly heavier and larger than standard 7-inch tablets, but has a 16:10 aspect ratio screen, which may be more acceptable for some users than the generally accepted 16:9 standard.

Bottom line

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 may be good choice for those who are looking for a fairly productive inexpensive 7-inch tablet with a decent screen for surfing, reading and watching videos, for those who need GPS and memory cards, as well as a 3G module. 4 reasons to buy Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0:

  • Price/quality ratio
  • Good performance in games and videos
  • Supports a wide range of audio and video formats
  • Good build

2 reasons not to buy Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0:

  • Slowdown in the TouchWiz shell.
  • Weak camera.
