Review of the Lenovo S860 smartphone or autonomy in an aluminum case - SKU exchange - LJ. Review of the Lenovo S860 smartphone or autonomy in an aluminum case - SKU exchange - Learn Lenovo s860 Chinese version

Lenovo positions the S-series as “stylish smartphones for entertainment.” Lenovo S860 is the successor to the popular P780 model, which has long been considered the standard among smartphones with a large battery capacity.

To begin with, it is worth noting that there are two versions of the Lenovo S860. One of them is intended exclusively for the Chinese market, and will be discussed in this review. The second is supplied to other countries, including Russia. The difference is the amount of RAM (1GB in the Chinese version versus 2GB for the rest of the world). In addition, the Chinese version of Lenovo S860 does not support WCDMA 900 MHz frequency. At the time of writing the review, the price in the nearest stores for Lenovo S860 is approximately 13,000 rubles. If you order from China, the price will be approximately 7,000 rubles, but you will receive less RAM and no official warranty.

The body of the device is assembled with high quality, there are no gaps or creaks. The inserts at the top and bottom are made of plastic, and the side edges, like the back cover, are made of aluminum.
The front side is black, without any logos or icons.

At the bottom there are touch buttons “menu”, “home” and “back” with a weak backlight, which is visible only in the dark.

At the top there are familiar elements: earpiece, LED event indicator, front camera and light and proximity sensors.

The back cover is matte and does not show fingerprints. The Lenovo logo is engraved centrally on the back. Just above there is an 8MP main camera eye and an LED flash. Due to the impressive thickness of the device, the camera does not protrude from the body, but, on the contrary, is slightly recessed.

On the right side are the power and volume keys.

On the left there is a tray for installing 2 microSIM cards. You can open the tray with a special paperclip that comes with the phone.

The back cover is not removable; you cannot install a memory card. At the bottom there is a microUSB connector and grilles, behind which one speaker is hidden. On the top edge there is a headset jack and a second microphone. The dimensions of the smartphone are 149.5 x 77.0 mm with a thickness of 10.3 mm.

The standard package includes a 2A charger, microUSB cable and headset.

The screen is made using OGS technology using an IPS matrix. The resolution is 1280x720 pixels. The display has good brightness, rich colors and wide viewing angles.

Multi-touch supports up to 10 simultaneous touches.

The smartphone is powered by a 4-core MT6582 processor from Mediatek. The processor frequency is 1.3 GHz, and Mali-400 is used as a video accelerator. The smartphone successfully handles undemanding games. Performance tests show good results.

The volume of the built-in storage is 16GB. There is no slot for installing memory cards. A little less than 13GB of disk space remains available to the user. You can connect your smartphone to your computer either as a portable player (MTP) or as a camera (PTP).

The capacity of the non-removable battery is 4000 mAh. At maximum load of Antutu Tester, the smartphone worked for about 7 hours. With average intensity of use, the smartphone will last for 3-4 days. The manufacturer promises us up to 43 hours of talk time (2G) and up to 40 days in active standby mode. In addition, the smartphone can be used as a Power Bank and charge other devices via an OTG cable.

Despite the fact that there are two grilles on the bottom edge, only one speaker is hidden behind them, it is located to the right of the microUSB connector. The volume of the main speaker is above average, the sound quality is also good. The smartphone lacks low frequencies, but the situation is similar with almost all middle-class smartphones. At maximum volume there is no sound distortion. The quality of the included headset leaves much to be desired.

The smartphone runs on Android 4.2 with the proprietary VibeUI interface. A special feature of the firmware is the absence of a menu of installed applications. After installation, all programs end up on the desktop, where they can be sorted and combined into folders. Interfaces work smoothly.

The smartphone has the usual set of wireless interfaces. Wi-Fi Analyzer shows a good signal level in the room next to the router.

Only one SIM card supports 3G connection.

The smartphone can be used as a full-fledged navigator, GPS works great, satellites are located quickly, and tests show good positioning accuracy.

The main camera in the smartphone has a resolution of 8 megapixels, and the front one has a resolution of 1.6 megapixels. The quality of the main camera is average. In good lighting, good pictures are obtained.

The front camera is suitable for Skype calls, but selfie lovers are unlikely to be satisfied with the quality of the pictures.

Lenovo will produce another decent smartphone with good battery life. One battery charge will last for several days of full use. If you use your smartphone only for calls, you will have to charge it no more than once a week. However, the large volume of the battery led to an inevitable increase in the size of the device and its thickness.
I was also pleasantly pleased with the screen; it has good brightness and wide viewing angles.

The smartphone has a quad-core MediaTek MT6582 processor, the operating frequency of which is 1.3 GHz, the video adapter is Mali 400. The smartphone’s RAM is 2 gigabytes, internal memory is 16 gigabytes. There are two cameras, the first is 1.6 megapixels, and the second is 8 megapixels, there is an LED flash and autofocus. The smartphone has two slots for SIM cards, WIFI, Bluetooth and GPS.

As was said at the very beginning, the smartphone has a fairly powerful 4000 mAh battery, with which it is possible to charge other devices (just kidding :)).

In moderate use, the smartphone demonstrates phenomenal autonomy - up to 6-7 days without recharging.

Lenovo S860 is a logical upgrade of the well-known and popular smartphone P780.

There are two versions: Chinese and European.
The difference between them is that the Chinese version has only 1 GB of RAM, and the European version has 2 GB.
The European version costs $100 more.
Is 1 GB of RAM worth the extra cost? You decide.
AnTuTu:

Lenovo S860 scores 17,000 points in the AnTuTu test, which is absolutely enough for any application.
From heavy games to simple FB2 readers.

Navigation:

MT6592, like MT6582 in principle, did not grab stars from the sky, but they always caught satellites. Although not as fast as SnapDragon does

Sound:
Despite the fact that the case has special holes for two speakers, the phone only has one. If you look at the smartphone from the display side, there is a speaker on the right, and false perforation on the left.

To my surprise, the speaker, although only one, performed worthy. Plays loud enough, without blockages at high frequencies. Bass is present.

The Lenovo S860 is a workhorse that will help you forget about constant recharging. The smartphone itself looks monolithic. Nothing creaks or plays.
There is enough power for any application, although 2 GB of RAM would certainly be better than one. But as I already said, is an additional gig of memory worth the $100 overpayment?
I think not 😉

If you are looking for a new smartphone for your old smartphone, Lenovo C860 will be an excellent companion that will help you forget about charging for a long time!

As evidenced by reviews from smartphone buyers, high-performance processors, a large amount of memory, and bright screens often do not matter to the consumer if the mobile phone has a weak battery that constantly requires recharging. The leading Chinese manufacturer of mobile devices, Lenovo, takes this problem very seriously, regularly updating its line of smartphone models with high-capacity batteries. Not so long ago, users left rave reviews about a metal one with a 4000 mAh battery, after which we reviewed its newer and already plastic successor with a 3000 mAh battery, which now remains relevant (today you can buy this model at a very tempting price of $145). In the end, Lenovo decided that after all, four are better than three, and metal is better than plastic, and a new model of a long-lasting smartphone with a 4000 mAh battery and in an all-aluminum case saw the market.

Today we invite you to familiarize yourself with a review of a very interesting mobile phone with an excellent margin of safety and autonomy - LenovoS860.

Characteristics

Before listing the technical characteristics of the Lenovo S860, we note that two versions of this mobile phone can be found on sale: for the Chinese and for the European markets. The differences between the Chinese and the European are the absence of our 3G standard in the first, as well as the presence of only one gigabyte of RAM, while its brother has twice the amount of RAM. We received a version for the Chinese market to write a review, please take this into account.

SpecificationsLenovo S860

Just one gigabyte of RAM immediately puts this model into the inexpensive segment, where competition is quite high, and a high-quality battery alone will not be a decisive factor when deciding to buy this particular model. The price of the smartphone will also be important. An option with 1GB of RAM in mid-November 2014 can be purchased for at least 3,000 UAH, which is approximately $190. For Lenovo S860 with 2 GB of RAM they charge more. This smartphone from the official supply can be bought at best for 4300 UAH, which is 80 dollars more. The “gray” models are not much cheaper.

In the first case, the premium for metal and a capacious battery looks more or less justified. In the second, just an increased amount of RAM increases the price inadequately.

So far, the model has only been on sale for a few months, and its price is steep, but we think it won’t last long. Knowing Lenovo, we would venture to assume that another couple of months will pass, and prices for the Lenovo S860 will confidently go down, making room for new, more modern models.

Description

The LenovoS860 is delivered in the usual for the manufacturer nondescript-looking light gray box with red insides, however, it is made with high quality and protects the valuables contained in it quite reliably. Inside the package, in addition to the mobile phone itself, after opening the following is found:

Charger with adapter for European sockets;

USB cable;

Instructions in Chinese;

Cheap black headphones;

Silicone bumper;

Protective film on the screen;

Microfiber;

A paperclip for removing the SIM card slot cover.

The official version for Ukraine most likely contains instructions in a language that is more understandable to us, but, unfortunately, we were not able to verify this.

Lenovo S860 is a metal smartphone, with all the ensuing consequences. He is large, weighty, solid.

If we compare its weight and size parameters with the model we recently reviewed with the same display diagonal, today’s hero of the review is heavier by as much as 34 g and a third thicker. Such characteristics are determined not only by the metal of the case, but also by the battery of considerable capacity, which is hidden under the non-removable back cover of the smartphone.

However, those users who have previously used the Lenovo P780 will hardly find such dimensions and weight a problem. More than once I have come across reviews online that at a good price, it’s time to replace the old one with a brand new Lenovo S860.

Using the LenovoS860 is quite comfortable (if you do it with both hands, of course), the weight of your hands does not bother you, and the brushed metal of the back cover pleasantly cools your hand and gives you a feeling of reliability and confidence in your device.

Unlike many identical models from the manufacturer, the Lenovo S860 even has originality in appearance. The phone looks, as they say, solid. Mostly men will probably appreciate this. But you can admire the exact proportionality of the exterior details and the strict lines of the model.

On the front cover, above the sensor, there is a small speaker grille, to the right of which there is a sensor window, a front camera and an event indicator. Below the screen are the standard Menu, Home and Back buttons, all backlit. The frames around the touchscreen can hardly be called narrow, but their width is not excessive.

At the top end you can find a jack for 3.5" headphones, as well as a microphone hole.

On the right are neat volume and power keys. The keys are pressed with a distinct click, the stroke is short and comfortable.

At the bottom on the sides there are grilles of external speakers, between which a micro-USB connector is nestled.

And on the left there is a small plug that hides a tray for two micro-sim cards. It opens with the included paper clip.

On the back cover, made of a single piece of metal, there is only a window for the main camera and a small flash LED along them. The camera is somewhat recessed inside the body, which protects the lens from scratches, and has a beautiful silver border around the circumference of the module.

Due to its non-separable design and metal body, the Lenovo S860 is made very reliably. The build quality deserves the best reviews; we were unable to find even a small flaw in the assembly.

Screen

The LenovoS860 screen, with a diagonal of 5.3" and a resolution of 1280x720 pixels, is an ordinary solution on a good IPS matrix, with good (but not record) viewing angles and adequate color rendering, if not for one characteristic. The brightness of this display is simply incredible. Unfortunately , it is not possible to carry out hardware measurements in the conditions of our editorial office, but screens with such a reserve of brightness have definitely not come to us yet. By setting the glow of the Lenovo S860 screen to maximum and working like that for a while, you can simply go blind. Fortunately, you can always turn on auto-adjustment brightness, which will set its comfortable value, and save yourself from the danger of losing your eyes forever.

The model's sensor is responsive and works as it should. The touchscreen supports multi-touch for 10 simultaneous touches.

Iron

In this model, the manufacturer decided not to chase high performance and installed an inexpensive quad-core MediaTek MTK6582 processor with an operating frequency of 1.3 GHz. Perhaps its power consumption indicators were also taken into account here, because the Lenovo S860 is positioned as a leader in battery life.

We didn't experience any performance issues in our daily work. The firmware worked as it should, the browser opened several pages at the same time without lag, applications did not irritate with excessive thoughtfulness when loading, and videos from YouTube played smoothly. Interface

The Lenovo S860 is not distinguished by the lightning-fast responsiveness of top models, this is immediately noticeable, but it is quite comfortable for work.

The smartphone has 16 GB of permanent memory, and there is no possibility of expanding it using a flash drive. Perhaps this amount of built-in storage may seem small to some, although reviews from those who have already purchased this model claim that the problem with the lack of space in the Lenovo S860 is overblown. A little more than 12 GB is initially available to the user.

In the Antutu benchmark test, our test subject scored a modest 17156 points.

Other options

The Lenovo S860 has a fairly good and loud sound from the external speaker; it will be difficult to miss a call from this even in a noisy environment. The standard headphones sound predictably inexpressive, although they are also loud, but we didn’t expect anything from them.

The Wi-fi module works very clearly and receives a remote signal from the access point reliably. The GPS navigation module also showed very good results in terms of the speed of finding satellites and positioning on the ground.

Camera

In many models of the S series, Lenovo has a standard formula for a set of cameras: 1.6 megapixels on the front, 8 megapixels on the rear camera. Like the model from the previous review, the main camera of the Lenovo S860 demonstrates very decent image quality for both photos and videos. The camera can confidently shoot in cloudy weather, indoors with little light, and has a good flash brightness reserve.

Focus is set by touching the screen in an arbitrary location; this can also be done while shooting a video.

The camera program interface contains the entire necessary set of settings for manual control of shooting parameters, plus a standard set of decorations and special effects. For the average smartphone user, the photo quality and Full HD video of the Lenovo S860 camera will be quite enough.

Firmware

The LenovoS860 firmware is built on the already reviewed version of Android 4.2.2 with the proprietary Lenovo launcher installed on top. This launcher removes the main program menu that appears when you press the "Home" button, instead providing a whole bunch of small interface tweaks (half of which the user may not notice). You can find many of these tweaks by going to the Settings menu and going to the Special tab. The built-in Firmware Explorer is logical and convenient, and of the pre-installed programs, we find SecureIt and Power Manager the most useful.

During tests, we did not have any complaints about the instability of the Lenovo S860 firmware.

Battery

Here we come to the description of the most interesting characteristic of the Lenovo S860 for many readers of the review - battery life. In order not to torment you with unnecessary waiting, let's say right away that the mobile phone did not disappoint us. The Lenovo S860 battery can really last a very long time. After running the Antutu battery test and leaving the phone running, after more than three hours we saw that the battery had lost less than 30 percent of its charge. This model copes well with always-on Wi-Fi and with watching long movies from YouTube.

Draining the Lenovo S860 battery is really not an easy task, and an ordinary user who does not spend all his time on the Internet while watching movies can count on two to three days of full-fledged operation of the smartphone without resorting to a power outlet. This is confirmed by the Antutu battery test, which resulted in a magnificent 9845 points.

By the way, about the outlet. Since the battery capacity is large, it charges very slowly from the computer’s USB port, and if you perform any operations while using the smartphone, the charge indicator completely stops in place. The current supplied via USB is clearly not enough for this battery, so it is recommended to charge it from an outlet using a standard power supply.

conclusions

Lenovo S860 turned out to be an excellent successor to the work of its predecessor and younger brother. If the main characteristic by which you choose which smartphone to buy is its autonomy, take the Lenovo S860 without hesitation and don’t hesitate. From a leading brand, with such quality, metal and record battery life, this model has no equal.

But if, when choosing a new phone, you also care about its price and performance, things become less clear-cut. Among models with a similar or comparable screen diagonal with the same performance, it costs 700 UAH less, has a slot for a micro-SD flash drive, although it is made of plastic. , which costs not much more, beats our today's hero on all fronts except battery life, although it is also plastic.

Well, if we take into account the European model with 2GB of RAM and its price, choosing the Lenovo S860 becomes even more difficult.

It seems to us that the Lenovo S860 is a smartphone primarily for men who value reliability expressed in metal and who, first of all, require high levels of autonomy. For other categories of buyers, the deciding factors in favor of other models may still be the price and rather weak hardware characteristics.

Advantages Flaws

-excellent metal case;

Nice extremely bright screen;

A friend of mine was planning to switch from his old P780 to something equivalent from Lenovo and asked for advice. Only 2 options were born in my head: if now, then Lenovo S860, if in a month or two, Lenovo P70. But he doesn’t need either power or LTE, he just needs the device here and now. The choice was made, the device was ordered and the waiting began. A little over a month passed and the parcel arrived in Siberia.
The tight packaging prevented damage to the box and especially the device. The smartphone is not like any other, it has its own design, high-quality assembly due to the non-separable case and, accordingly, a non-removable battery. I was pleasantly pleased with the dimensions - it seems to be 5.3 inches, but personally I find it very comfortable and pleasant to hold in my hand - I’m thinking about looking for something similar in size for myself.
The entire front part is occupied by a 5.3-inch screen.

At the top there is a speaker, a 2 MP front camera, light and proximity sensors, under the screen there are 3 touch buttons: menu, home and back, which have dim backlighting.

The back is made entirely of metal and has only the company logo and an 8 MP camera with flash at the top.

The left side contains only a tray for 2 micro SIM cards, on the right there are physical power buttons and a volume rocker, on the top there is a microphone and a 3.5 headphone output, on the bottom there is a charging port and 2 slots for the speaker, which in fact is one, but very, very loud.

The equipment is spartan: a smartphone, a charging cable, a 2A charging unit, something like headphones, a clip for the SIM card tray.

Screen
The display has a diagonal of 5.3 inches - it is an IPS matrix, made using OGS technology, and has HD resolution, which I think is more than enough. The bezels are indecently wide by today's standards, but the price range of the smartphone is not top-end.

The viewing angles are very large (the photos are not very good).

The heart of the smartphone is the well-proven mtk6582 - a 4-core processor with a clock frequency of 1.3 GHz, a Mali-400 video accelerator. The device has 1 GB of RAM and 16 ROM, of which just over 12 GB is available.
The phone does not support memory cards, which of course reduces its rating, because... The model is available in one modification - only 16 GB. OTG support partly compensates for this shortcoming.
Antutu showed standard results for such hardware.

Wireless interfaces.
3G works, but it’s somehow weak - it very rarely picks up H+ in the apartment. Although after the firmware I flashed the Chinese modem. But we'll test it some more.

WiFi works in principle without any complaints, the signal is stable.

I was not pleased with the GPS - very poor reception even with connected WiFi. Although it was near the window and the weather was not ice.

Comes with Android 4.4 on board. Upon arrival, the device was flashed with European 402 firmware. After about 5 minutes it will offer to download an update to version 405, but I haven’t updated it yet.

Camera.
The quality of the rear camera is generally quite good. Photos in good light come out well, and the camera focuses quickly. However, it is far from the cameras from Sony on expensive devices. The front is the usual UG...

Battery
I’ll supplement the review with a test from Antutu. But during a very hard day of load, the battery dropped from 100% to 23% - that’s a lot of tests, calls, games and pictures.
A good load is enough for 2-3 full days.
The bottom line is that we have a fairly balanced device, but 3G is still an issue – we’ll test it. I would probably like something more expensive, because... Whatever you say, price determines quality. Expensive models have better cameras, displays and support.
