Back in May, information surfaced in various sources about the launch by the Korean corporation Samsung of a new series of smartphones in the “galactic” line, Galaxy J. The official release of the first two devices, J5 and, took place in June 2015.

In 2016, Samsung released a new version of the Galaxy J5, with the article number SM-J510, which we reviewed at this link. This review is about the 2015 J5.

Samsung Galaxy J5 is a solution, although typical for Samsung, but it is not without innovations. In addition to the traditional hardware and functionality typical of a mid-price smartphone, the device received a front-facing flash. Now you can take selfies in the evening. Girls who liked taking self-portraits in last years, must evaluate.

The design of the smartphone does not stand out in any way from other devices in the Galaxy line; externally, the device is almost identical to its “brother” E5. These are the same straight lines of the body, rounded corners and a bezel stylized as metal.
The branded “Home” button located under the screen has also not gone away. The front photoflash catches your eye, the peephole of which is visible near the speaker for conversation. It is located symmetrically to the front camera lens. Color options are currently available in black and white.

The cost of the smartphone in the Chinese market was about $225. At the beginning of 2016, its cost is less than $200.

Specifications Samsung Galaxy J5 SM-J500H

The model turned out to be interesting in terms of innovations and attractive in terms of hardware. Thanks to balanced technical Samsung specifications Galaxy J5 can confidently be classified as middle class.

CPU

The new product is based on a mid-range Quallcomm Snapdragon 410 processor. It is equipped with four cores operating at frequencies up to 1.2 GHz. The performance of this chip is average; in the popular AnTuTu benchmark you can get about 20 thousand points. Compared to the 50 - 65 thousand for flagships, it looks modest. But in comparison with its closest competitor, MT6582 from Taiwanese MTK, the performance increase is approximately 2000 points.

Graphic Samsung processor Galaxy J5, Adreno 306, allows the smartphone to handle most existing games, including the relatively power-hungry World of Tanks.

Memory

RAM in Samsung Galaxy J5 is 1.5 GB. This figure is quite unusual for smartphones, but this is not the first South Korean device equipped with such a volume of RAM. There will be enough memory for both the basic needs of users and those who tend to load their device to its fullest.

Dual SIM Samsung version Galaxy J5 J500H is equipped with 8 GB of internal memory (versus 16 for the analogue with one SIM card slot). Not enough, but not scary: there is a slot for a memory card, modules with a capacity of up to 64 GB are supported.

Battery

The battery of the Samsung Galaxy J5 is removable and has a capacity of 2600 mAh. The autonomy indicators are not bad, the only let down is the operating time in games. So, in reading or web surfing mode, the smartphone will last 10 – 13 hours, depending on the color of the displayed information (thanks AMOLED display). Watching movies will use up the battery a little faster: up to 12 hours. But three-dimensional toys make the milliamps of the battery in the Samsung Galaxy J5 “melt before our eyes”: 3.5 – 4 hours and a fully charged battery “goes to zero”. About smartphones with the best batteries we write in this section.

Camera

There are two cameras here, the main one is 13 MP and the front one is 5. An interesting fact is that both are equipped with flashes. True, the front camera does not have autofocus. But it supports shooting video in FullHD, and the videos come out quite well. As for the photo, everything is fine with that too. In normal lighting conditions, both cameras are able to take a decent shot; noise and blur appear only when shooting in the dark.

The main photo module is better suited for working in dim light thanks to a more powerful flash. But additional camera there are software algorithms for improving the quality of shooting faces, which lovers of self-portraits will definitely appreciate.

Display

AMOLED screens are a Samsung signature feature (we wrote about the features and differences of such screens from others in the link). Of course, other companies also install such matrices in their devices, but it was the South Korean company that managed to achieve the best results in this field. The Samsung Galaxy J5 has a five-inch display with HD resolution (1280x720 pixels). The DPI is 294 pixels per inch, which is an acceptable result for a mid-level device.

The picture quality of the Samsung Galaxy J5 is good, there are no color distortions even when viewing the image on the screen at an angle. There is also enough brightness; you can read the inscriptions on the display under the straight lines. sun rays is quite real.

Data transfer

The J500H model is equipped with two slots for SIM cards in MicroSIM format. In addition to the standard modern smartphones GSM standards and 3G, Samsung Galaxy J5 also supports LTE networks(what it is?). Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.1 are also present. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the GPS navigator: the smartphone quickly finds satellites and communicates with them.

Sound

Multimedia capabilities of the Samsung Galaxy J5 can be called average. The sound is loud, but too “dry”: there is not enough bass and midrange. Everything is much better with headphones: there low frequencies are already appearing, there is no noise, and the volume level is still decent. If you are interested in smartphones with good sound, then you should read this selection of ours.

OS

Samsung Galaxy J5 runs Android Lolipop OS version 5.1 and uses the proprietary TouchWiz interface as a graphical shell. Compared to flagships, the capabilities of this launcher are somewhat limited. What was unexpected was the lack of a full-fledged player with the ability to play music from a flash drive. In general, the OS works stably, there are no slowdowns or unexpected application crashes.

In October 2016, the smartphone began receiving an update to Android 6.0.1 in the Netherlands and it is possible that the update will appear in other countries.

Pros and cons of Samsung Galaxy J5 SM-J500H

Advantages of Samsung Galaxy J5:

  • front photoflash;
  • LTE support;
  • two SIM cards;
  • good screen;
  • confident work with GPS;
  • capacious battery.

Disadvantages of a smartphone:

  • Not enough built-in memory (8 GB);
  • mediocre sound on the speaker;
  • In games it discharges quickly.

Conclusion

Samsung Galaxy J5 is a mid-class smartphone with balanced parameters. Although he is inferior flagship models, but the implementation of the main functionality did not disappoint. Our review revealed more pros than cons of the smartphone, so our impression of the device was positive.

Thanks to the universal Samsung design The Galaxy J5 is suitable for both selfie lovers (this is where the front flash comes in handy) and those who prefer to watch photos and videos rather than take them. Connoisseurs of mobile toys may be disappointed in their smartphone, as their Samsung Galaxy J5 may run out of battery at the most unexpected moment.

Review of Samsung Galaxy J5 (J500H)

Hi all. Now I'm holding in my hands new model line J (jay) from the Korean manufacturer Samsung - Galaxy J5. This model belongs to the middle price category, but has very good functions. Those. can be described as a smart phone at a reasonable price. I would also like to add that this model is the “younger brother” of the newly launched J7 and contains the same set of characteristics, only simplified.

Essentially, the device is a smartphone for selfies, since the manufacturer has placed another flash camera on the front panel near the front camera. Well, we will check this statement later. Here we go?The body materials are the most standard - plastic and glass. And in general, the smartphone looks like a typical Samsung. The corners are rounded, the rim is made to look like metal, the lines of the body are straight, without bends.I won’t say that the plastic is very easily soiled, but fingerprints still remain when used. The model is available in three colors: black, white and grey. As you can see, I have a black version in my review.

On the left side there is a power button, on the right there is a volume rocker. At the bottom you can see connectors for a headset and microUSB, and there is also a microphone here. The rear panel houses the main camera, LED flash, speaker and logo. On the front side there is a front camera, flash, proximity and light sensors and a speaker, and at the bottom of the screen there are two touch and one mechanical keys.

The smartphone is more or less comfortable to hold in your hand. I have no complaints. I did not observe any creaks, and there were no loose parts during the entire period of my use. The dimensions of the device are: 142 x 73 x 8.5 mm, and the weight is 149 g.

The screen diagonal of the J5 is 5 inches, with HD resolution and a density of 294 ppi. Naturally, the matrix here is SuperAMOLED, there can’t even be any questions. In principle, the color rendition of the screen is not bad, and the viewing angles are also good. If you turn it at different angles, you will find color defects, but still this is acceptable for a medium-sized model. price segment. Moreover, the picture clarity is excellent. They didn't skimp on brightness here either. In sunny weather, you can be sure that there will be no unnecessary problems with viewing the screen.

Both cameras are equipped with flashes. And this is a feature of this smartphone. Yes, it can be called Selifan, because the resolution of the front camera is 5 MPa and, moreover, it is wide-angle, which will allow you to capture more space in the frame. The pictures come out well. In good lighting there is no noise. And when things go wrong, a flash comes to the rescue.

The main camera module is 13 MPa. Its aperture is f/1.9. There is autofocus and a second flash. The pictures are of high quality, as for such a device. I have no comments.

Video shooting is supported in FullHD resolution.The J5 has a wide range of sound volumes. But it lacks bass and clarity of sound. But this is only when playing through a speaker. If you connect a headset, then such minor troubles are not observed. Sounds good.

The core of the device is a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor with clock frequency at 1.2 GHz. The graphics chip in this device is Adreno 306, with the help of which the smartphone can cope with many power-hungry games. Yes, the processor is not the most powerful, that's clear. But the smartphone is quite enough for everyday work. Games load fine too. Some hiccups were observed in 3D games, but this is not critical. Overall performance is good.

The Galaxy J5 has 1.5 GB of RAM, 8 GB of built-in memory, which is of course not enough, but this can be solved by connecting an SD card up to 64 GB, for which, thank God, there is a slot. Otherwise, you look at the latest flagships from Samsung and it makes you shiver. Do they really feel sorry for making an extra slot for a memory card? No, the manufacturer prefers to limit users in this regard. So it’s good that you can expand the memory here without unnecessary overpayments.

The battery of this model is removable, with a capacity of 2600 mAh. In principle, this is a good indicator for such a device. Well, this is my personal opinion. In Internet surfing mode, the smartphone lasted about 12 hours, while watching videos about 11, but in toy mode it ran out in 4 hours. In general, with mixed mode, the phone will last for a day. If you don’t constantly pull it, it will work for two days for sure. The device supports a number of interfaces: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1, USB 2.0, LTE. Under the back cover there is not only a battery, but also two slots for Micro SIM cards. There is only one radio module, so one card will not be available while you are talking on the other. As for navigation, GPS and GLONASS perform their functions perfectly.

Operating system - Android 5.1 Lollipop, with a proprietary shell from Samsung TouchWiz. The platform works great. The only note is the lack of a native player as such, there is Play Music, but personally I am more comfortable using the player from Samsung.

Well, the gadget is quite nice. Good set useful functions and the price is reasonable. For those who love selfies, the presence of a front flash is generally an excellent argument for purchasing this device. But of course it's up to you to decide.

Pros: Everything works like a Swiss watch! Updated regularly now Android 6.0.1
Cons: Slippery and scratches quickly, you need a case and glass for the screen, which are difficult to find
Review: I read the reviews and there is no limit to surprise)) for some, the camera is bad, everything is soapy, for others it’s dull... for others, the battery runs out in an hour)) for some, they didn’t put headphones in.. and so on.. Guys and girls, you or your hands crooked or you bought a smart phone from the metro for 3-4 thousand, I’ve seen these myself.. of course everything will be awry there.. and so that the camera doesn’t lather, you need to make sure your hands don’t shake))

Pros: Display, fast device, sound in headphones, navigation
Cons: Smooth back cover - a bit slippery.
On a small note - there are no features like auto-brightness, user tracking (when you hold the phone in front of your face, it doesn’t block), or choice of display color profile.
Review: I purchased it about a month ago. Android 6 came out of the box.
I'm happy with the device:
Very good display, brightness is enough for about 30-40%. When you turn on the “outdoor” mode it becomes so bright that you can use it as a very bright flashlight.
Holds charge well. Here, in general, it is determined by the consumption of the display: what to watch a movie from a phone card, what to read a book or on the Internet - almost the same consumption of 7-10% of the battery per hour. If you watch movies via Wi-Fi, battery consumption increases sharply. Those. Watching a movie and reading is enough for 10 hours. And if in dialer mode, then maybe for a week. I recharge it a couple of times a week from 40-60 percent.
Reliable and fast navigation. In a car, on the move, the location is determined in 30 seconds, no more.
There is enough RAM through the roof, free memory is at least 300MB.
Great sound in headphones. I use xiaomi headphones MI 3 and Player Pro.
Comfortable, no-bullshit shell.
It's not entirely clear with the camera. It feels like software part jpeg compresses too much. A 13 megapixel photo is about 3 megabytes in size.

Pros: Design, Super Amoled display, Quite a good camera, the front one also seems okay, Speaker, sound when listening to music
Cons: no 4G, sometimes dull, 8gb of memory is not enough, battery is rather weak, original flashlight is dim (being fixed) latest update phone)
Review: I've had this phone for about 1 year now, to begin with, I started to feel sorry for me as soon as I bought it, after 1-2 months, BUT now, 1 year after I updated my phone to the latest, some bugs that bothered me were removed, for example, if I charged the phone not from the original charger, sometimes it could charge for 7-9 hours, now everything is ok, it was also very annoying that when you are driving in a car and you need to turn off the Internet, the data transfer button after exiting also asks are you really sure.??? ....))) press OK every time, also the flashlight is very dim, the latest update fixed the problem, the phone was very often stupid from the beginning of the purchase, it could turn off or close the window on its own, it seems that the latest updates have fixed the situation, no 4G , sometimes dull (1gig of RAM is not enough), also sometimes it turned off and slowed down, or updates fixed it or stopped being dull on its own, also 8gb of memory is not enough, nowhere to download applications, battery (with more active use lasts 1 day), lackluster native flashlight(fixed by the latest phone update)
In general, I was more or less satisfied after using it for 1 year, when new updates to the phone came out and seemed to solve some of the problems, for such a price it’s worth the money
I recommend it's worth the money
