Huawei Nova Plus - new smartphone with a large display, representing the middle class, alternative name Huawei models G9 Plus. The device was announced at the September IFA 2016 exhibition. It represents a completely new line of the Chinese brand, which makes it possible to enjoy devices with a premium design, but at an affordable price.

Design and ergonomics

The front of the Huawei Nova Plus is covered with spectacular curved glass. There are no wide frames here, everything is as refined and elegant as possible. The body itself is made of high quality aluminum. The flat side edges have a high-gloss finish that looks really nice. At the back there is a fingerprint scanner, as well as the main camera, which protrudes literally a millimeter. The bottom end has not only holes for speakers, but also a progressive connector USB Type-C. Since Huawei Nova Plus turned out to be slippery and massive due to big screen, then he regularly tries to jump out of his hand. At the same time, holding the gadget in the palm of your hand is still pleasant and comfortable, your fingers fit where they need to be. One can feel the solidity of the device and the widespread use of high-quality materials. The design does not allow you to change the 3340 mAh battery yourself. Huawei Dimensions Nova Plus (G9 Plus): height - 151.8 mm, width - 75.7 mm, thickness - 7.3 mm, weight - 160 g. Body color - gray, gold and silver.

Display

The device uses a 5.5-inch IPS matrix that recognizes up to 10 simultaneous clicks. With a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels and high pixel density, the screen displays a stunning picture that is worthy of praise. There is increased brightness. allowing you to confidently see the image even outdoors in clear weather. Really wide viewing angles and excellent contrast also play in favor of this display. You can adjust the color temperature yourself. There is also a mode that protects vision.

Hardware and performance

The Nova Plus smartphone turned out to be equipped with a rather exotic processor - Snapdragon 625. This is a new mid-level solution, consisting of eight cores that operate at a frequency of 2000 MHz. The graphics are handled by the Adreno 506 accelerator, which belongs to the latest GPU series. For fast work applications and OS are allocated 3 GB of RAM. The internal storage has a capacity of 32 GB, and it can be expanded up to 128 GB MicroSD cards. Here it is used operating system Android 6.0, which is redesigned with the exclusive EMUI 4.1 shell.

The interface, programs and many games run without noticeable freezes. Of course, there is still no lightning-fast speed, but it is pleasant to control and use the device. In AnTuTu, Huawei Nova Plus (G9 Plus) managed to score a good 64,000 points. Some particularly “heavy” games don’t work maximum settings graphics, but with high speed. At the same time, during operation, the smartphone heats up noticeably, which causes some inconvenience.

Communication and sound

Huawei G9 Plus stands out for its truly loud speaker sound. You can turn on the DTS function to make the sound more expressive. While the quality of the speaker can be called good, the sound in headphones is simpler. At maximum volume, the music will begin to choke. The speaker is very good - the interlocutor can be heard clearly, intonation and timbre are preserved. In addition to standard second and third generation networks, the gadget supports LTE Cat 6.

Camera

The built-in 16-megapixel camera can confidently be called fast. It allows you to instantly create photos without any extra thought. The module reproduces colors very accurately and also makes it possible to beautifully blur the distant background. The camera actually has a lot of different modes that can significantly improve the quality of your photos. At night, the photos will turn out blurry, but this typical problem cameras of most smartphones. Pleased with the availability optical stabilization, because she helps a lot in the filming process. Moreover, you can freely shoot videos in 4K! But clear and colorful self-portraits are the merit of the front 8-megapixel camera.

Conclusion

Inside the black box there is not only the smartphone itself, but also good headphones, a clip for the combo tray, an adapter and a cable. Nova Plus (G9 Plus) from Huawei - the ability to touch flagship smartphone in design and materials for a modest $450 fee. The device turned out to be quite fast, and its main camera deserves special praise. This is a compromise option for those who are not ready to overpay for a full-fledged flagship.

Video reviews

The smartphone is almost entirely made of aluminum. There are only a couple of small plastic inserts on the back panel, but they don't spoil the look. The camera lens protrudes slightly from the body. The front panel has glass rounded around the perimeter. There will be four colors on sale: dark grey, silver, gold and rose gold.

The smartphone is like a monolith: weighty, strong, with a jewelry cut. Everything here is like in premium devices.

photos

photos

photos

Everyone I gave the smartphone to hold appreciated the design. Girls especially liked Huawei Nova Plus. At the same time, friends and colleagues unanimously noted two shortcomings: ugly thick black frames around the display and a slippery body.

Smooth metal glides in dry hands. For a device with a 5.5-inch display and a weight of 160 grams, this could end badly. Using one hand is scary. Convex helps a little back panel, which fits well into the curve of the palm.

The control keys are on the right side, exactly under the thumb of the right hand. The lock button is grooved and is easy to feel in the dark.

If Nova Plus seems big to you, then take a closer look at the 5-inch Nova smartphone. It doesn't lag behind in terms of characteristics, but it fits better in the hand.

The scanner has become even more accurate

A fast and accurate fingerprint scanner is Huawei's hallmark. Nova Plus has upgraded it: now it recognizes not only the papillary pattern, but also its depth. Result: instant response at any finger position.

The scanner also works like this: Touchpad. In the Camera app, you can take a photo by holding your finger on it. Or pull out the notification panel by swiping from top to bottom. You can scroll through photos, answer a call, or turn off the alarm. Simple, logical and convenient.

The camera is not bad, but competitors take better pictures

Nova Plus shoots worse than some competitors for the same money. Take, for example, OnePlus 3 or Honor 8. Automation often overexposes the frame, fortunately, the exposure is adjusted when focusing. Errors can be curbed by manual mode. There is a lot to play around with: ISO, shutter speed, exposure compensation, etc.

The quality of landscapes greatly depends on the lighting: in cloudy weather, when shooting against the sky, the exposure meter is acting up. At night there are noises and blurs. But the pictures with short distance: portraits, macro, static objects.

The main camera of Huawei Nova Plus has a 16-megapixel sensor with a pixel size of 1.12 microns and optics with f2.2 aperture. There is only one module, unlike the double ones in Honor 8 and Huawei P9, but with optical stabilization.

photos

photos

photos

The camera has potential, but it can only be revealed in manual mode.

Videos can be shot in 4K resolution. The quality is excellent, there are no jerks or slowdowns. Stabilization helps a lot. But there are problems with sound recording: in the first second everything is fine, then the sound comes through as if through cotton wool.

At the presentation, most attention was paid to the front 8-megapixel camera. More precisely, photo processing. Huawei has equipped the application with the functions Beautiful Skin 3.0 and Beauty Make-up 2.0, which even out skin tone, remove bruises, blackheads, draw lips and do other things. The girls will definitely appreciate it.

Can handle all tasks

Huawei suddenly abandoned its own HiSilicon Kirin processors. Nova Plus uses Qualcomm Snapdragon 625. The result of 60,000 points in AnTuTu was not surprising, but when it came to real work, I was very pleased with the smartphone.

Launching applications, switching between them, taking photos, watching videos in 4K - everything works quickly, without stuttering or heating. Even with five programs in the background.

Huawei Nova Plus performance compared to competitors. The higher the result, the better.

With games too full order. Unkilled, Asphalt 8 and Modern Combat 5 ran at maximum settings, and there was not even a hint of lag during operation. The fighting game Injustice only slowed down in the menu and between fights.

Instead of a proprietary Huawei processor, the smartphone has a chip from Qualcomm. The device works very quickly, and this is even a little surprising.

Hauwei Nova Plus supports LTE from both SIM cards. On the outskirts of Moscow, the speed reached 40 Mbit/sec. The satellite location is determined in a couple of seconds. There are no problems with the call quality, but the volume of the speaker may not be enough on the street or in the subway.

The display is bright and clear

Huawei Nova Plus has an IPS display with a diagonal of 5.5 inches and a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels. The pixel density is 401 ppi, so you don't have to worry about detail.

The color balance can be adjusted in the settings, making the shades warmer or cooler. Vision Protection mode turns off the blue spectrum colors that cause eye fatigue: convenient in the dark or before bed. The screen also responds to touches with gloves.

The image on the screen is clear, rich, with correct color reproduction. The brightness is enough for comfortable work outdoors.

The battery will last for a day

Nova Plus has a battery with a capacity of 3340 mAh, with which the smartphone will “live” from early morning until late evening. This is if you actively use all the functions. If you moderate your ardor and only occasionally check notifications, then 1.5 days will be enough.

The smartphone played Full HD video at full brightness for 7 hours and 45 minutes. Sabway Surf arcade game drained the battery after 6 hours. Up to reference results Samsung Galaxy Edge 7 and Moto Z Play are far away:

Operating time of Huawei Nova Plus in comparison with competitors and standards. The result is given in minutes.

Using the included adapter (5V/2A), the smartphone is fully charged in 1 hour and 50 minutes. Not bad for an “average” guy!

Artificial audio system was a success

The Nova Plus does not have a built-in amplifier, but it does have DTS Headphone:X technology, which simulates surround sound. And this is not just a marketing ploy - the effect is noticeable.

With Headphone:X, the soundstage expands, becomes fuller and bassier. Music seems to surround you from all sides. The only thing I can complain about is the volume reserve: it’s not enough. IN normal mode The sound is flat and inexpressive - like that of budget smartphones.

For a long time, debates have not subsided about what size a reference smartphone should have. Chinese manufacturer Huawei decided to satisfy the needs of both fans of miniature gadgets and fans of devices with a large screen diagonal, and therefore two versions of Huawei Nova 2 were released to the market at once - regular and Plus. The latter, larger one, will be discussed in our review today.

Huawei Nova 2 Plus

Price and main characteristics

The smartphone belongs to the middle price segment, the older version costs 26,000 rubles, which is slightly more expensive than the regular Huawei Nova 2, which costs 24,000 rubles. Let's take a closer look at the filling for which we are asked to pay this considerable amount.

The smartphone comes in a rather modest package, but everything you need is in place - a charger with support fast charging, USB-C cable, a clip for the SIM tray and a simple headset.

The device comes in several colors – bright blue, gold and graphite black. The phone is visually similar to the brand's flagship models, which is a plus for a device in the mid-price range.

The design of the device does not shine with originality, but this is not a drawback. The gadget is pleased with its high build quality, the transitions between the monolithic metal body and the glass front panel are invisible, the inclusions of plastic are carefully painted in the same color, and therefore the phone looks like a single whole.

The front side of the smartphone has a standard layout - the front camera, earpiece and a set of sensors are traditionally located above the screen.

In this model, the company decided not to use physical controls, and therefore the bottom frame bears nothing other than the company logo.

The back surface is also designed in a strict manner - two lenses and a flash, a fingerprint scanner underneath and a discreet logo at the bottom.

The edges and ends are made in the usual design - a volume rocker and a power button on the right, a tray for SIM and flash cards on the left.

The bottom end simultaneously accommodates a speaker and an external speaker, a headset jack and USB-C, while the top end is limited in its functionality only to an additional microphone.

Screen

Smartphones from Huawei always have an excellent screen matrix and Huawei Nova 2 Plus is no exception. The display resolution here is Full HD, which is quite enough for a 5.5-inch diagonal.

The picture pleases with its rich color rendering and brightness, viewing angles are close to maximum, the black color is deep and rich, it is possible to reduce blue radiation, which has a beneficial effect on the eyes.

The range of internal brightness settings is very wide, the phone is comfortable to use both in complete darkness and in bright sun. The oleophobic film is already glued to the display and copes with its direct responsibilities quite well.

Performance

At the heart of the device beats a self-developed processor – HiSilicon Kirin 659. In tandem with the Mali-T830 graphics accelerator and 4 gigabytes of RAM, it shows quite good performance, although it is worth noting that it has not increased much compared to the previous generation of Huawei Nova, made on processor from Qualcomm.

However, the device copes with everyday tasks no worse than any flagship; the operation process is smooth, without slowdowns or lags.

But in the most demanding games it already becomes noticeable that the smartphone’s hardware is not top-end. Although this does not cause much inconvenience yet, such a filling does not have much reserve for the future.

Camera

Unlike the previous generation, Nova 2 acquired dual camera, which was previously the prerogative of only the company’s flagship models. True, unlike the same Huawei P10 Plus, the second module here is not monochrome, but is an eight-megapixel sensor with a wide-angle lens.

The main camera has a higher resolution - 12 megapixels, and an f/1.8 aperture; when used, the dual module allows you to get a 2x zoom without losing quality, and also adds the ability to shoot in portrait mode.

Shooting in natural light is not satisfactory; detail and color rendition deserve all praise. In the dark there is noise, the outlines lose clarity, but the result is still quite satisfactory. A powerful flash helps offset the effects of poor lighting.

The front camera is one of the trump cards of the device; selfies taken with a 20-megapixel sensor come out wonderful.

Speaker, sound quality

The external speaker of Huawei Nova 2 Plus did not surprise us in any way; it is quite loud and the sound quality is generally satisfactory, but there is no desire to use it as a portable speaker does not arise.

Another thing is the sound in headphones, here Huawei engineers were able to please even hardened audiophiles, the built-in AKM4376A DAC produces deep and clear sound, individual instruments are perfectly segmented. If you play around with the equalizer settings, you can achieve impressive results, and the new product from Huawei will do its job well as a media player.

Battery

The battery in this device is of a compromise nature; it is physically impossible to fit a high-capacity battery into a gadget less than 7mm thick, but 3340 mAh is a completely acceptable figure. It should easily be enough for a full day of active web surfing, instant messaging and moderate browsing. streaming video, as well as gaming leisure.

The presence of fast charging no longer surprises anyone, but it is still pleasantly pleasing - the gadget charges from zero to one hundred percent in less than an hour and a half.

Communication and Internet

No problems or surprises were found regarding the quality of communication - a strong level modern smartphone. The device supports all LTE bands common in Russia, so without mobile internet You won't be left in the middle of a busy city.
The navigation systems also pleased us with their speed and accuracy of determining coordinates. But the absence Wi-Fi support in the 5 GHz range was an unpleasant surprise, today similar technical solution looks archaic. Also, the smartphone is not equipped with an NFC module, so if Android function Pay is a must for you - it's worth taking a look at the manufacturer's other models.

Competitors, conclusion

Summarizing the above, I would like to note that Huawei is moving in the right direction towards creating a reference representative of the mid-range price segment smartphones. The developers did not skimp on the premium design and materials of the case, which will greatly please connoisseurs of the aesthetic component of mobile devices.

The hardware is not top-end, but the smartphone is not positioned as an ultra-modern gaming platform. The device copes with other tasks effortlessly. There are a number of doubts about the lack of NFC and Wi-Fi at 5 GHz, but for the average person these functions are not paramount and their lack is unlikely to affect the overall experience of working with a smartphone.

A well-implemented camera with 2x optical zoom is still a rarity in the smartphone market and only a few smartphones from Apple, Xiaomi and a couple of Chinese brands can compete with the new product from Huawei, but they usually cost significantly more, and therefore for photography enthusiasts to smartphone this model looks like a great choice.
