Delivery and configuration

The Lenovo S60 smartphone comes in a small, well-fitted box, which is made of high-quality high-density cardboard. Externally, the packaging looks quite attractive and contains all the necessary list of technical and legal information (full model name, serial number, brief specification table, country of production).

Inside the box, in addition to the smartphone, the user will definitely find Charger, USB cable, wired vacuum type headset, paper manual and warranty card.

Appearance, arrangement of elements

When you first look at the Lenovo S60, you get a small and, fortunately, quickly disappearing feeling of déjà vu. This is due to the characteristic visual style (flat front and back panels, as well as smooth, rounded sides), which, coupled with the typical arrangement of functional elements, has become distinctive feature many mobile gadgets on the market. However, Lenovo would not have been able to achieve such rapid success if it had not endowed its devices with a certain zest. In the reviewed smartphone, it was well-thought-out ergonomics.

Despite its by no means the most compact 5-inch form factor, the device is distinguished by its small thickness, convenient proportional dimensions (143.3 x 72 x 7.7 mm) and light weight (128 g), which help it fit well in the hand, and user - use all available functionality without noticeable fatigue or discomfort. At the same time, with almost any grip, you don’t have to reach for the available buttons (the unlock key is located under the thumb), which also increases the level of comfort.

The base, sides and back of the smartphone are made of high-quality matte plastic with a very interesting grainy texture. On the one hand, it has pleasant tactile properties, and on the other hand, it fights well against the appearance of ubiquitous fingerprints and other possible stains.

The Lenovo S60 is presented in three colors on the market - white, yellow and grey, with the latter most reminiscent of the famous “apple” color Space Grey. However, in any of the options, the smartphone looks very attractive and will be able to highlight the visual style of the owner.

The front side of Lenovo S60 is completely covered with protective glass. A barely noticeable edging runs along its contour, which, in addition to decorative purposes, serves as additional protection from external influences on the screen. By modern standards, the frames around the display can be called relatively large: 16 mm at the top and bottom and 5 mm on the sides. However, this does not significantly affect the ergonomics of the device; on the contrary, it allows you to more comfortably grasp the device without fear of touching the touch screen with your fingers.

Above the smartphone display there are proximity and light sensors, a multimedia speaker grille and a front camera lens, and below it there are three touch buttons(“Back”, “Home” and “Menu”).

On the top edge of the device there is a 3.5 mm audio jack for a headset and a tiny hole for an additional microphone. At the same time, a micro-USB port and two perforated grilles are located on the bottom edge. Under the left is the main microphone, and under the right is the multimedia speaker.

The right side of the smartphone contains the power button and volume rocker, while on the left there is a twin slot for Nano-SIM and Micro-SIM cards and another card slot microSD memory. They are quite tightly fixed at the base of the case and are most conveniently opened using a special clip.

The back side of the Lenovo S60 contains a classic set of elements: the main camera module, LED flash, manufacturer logo and standard technical information.

As for the build quality, here the smartphone under review can give odds to even more expensive models. All elements of the case are fitted very tightly, and the design of the device itself is a real monolith. Even with more active twisting attempts and significant pressure on the front or back, the geometry of the device cannot be changed, and the image on the display remains without visible streaks or other artifacts.

Display

The Lenovo S60 smartphone is equipped with a 5-inch IPS screen with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels and a pixel density of 294 ppi, which is a very good indicator for such a diagonal. This allows you to achieve good image detail and, as a result, comfortable display of any graphic information, including small system fonts.

The display is based on a time-tested IPS matrix, which is characterized by high contrast, natural color reproduction, pleasant temperature balance and wide viewing angles (up to 180°). Even with a diagonal deviation, the picture does not fade, but remains rich and well readable.

Protective glass, the name of which remains secret, is responsible for the integrity and safety of the screen. There is no air gap between it and the matrix, which also improves image quality.

The screen backlight has a good reserve of brightness, so it can be adjusted in a fairly wide range of gradations, including automatic mode. This makes it easy to use the device both on a sunny day and in low light conditions. In addition, a pleasant bonus is a special night mode display operation, which significantly reduces the brightness of the OS interface, making the minimum backlight level more comfortable for the eyes.

The built-in touch pad supports recognition of up to 5 simultaneous clicks. It is quite sensitive and instantly reacts to even the slightest touch. Sliding fingers along protective glass light and pleasant. It causes absolutely no discomfort. Traditionally for matrices of this type There is no support for working with gloves.

Audio subsystem

Despite the two perforated grilles on the bottom edge, there is only one multimedia speaker in the device. Thanks to its favorable location, it is practically not muffled and can provide pleasant and loud sound throughout the entire available range (pronounced high and mid frequencies are present). In addition, at the maximum volume level, the sound is not distorted, which allows you to comfortably use your smartphone without additional audio devices.

Complete vacuum headphones the sound turned out to be pleasant and smooth, with good frequency range and sufficient volume reserve. It lacked only volume, which is a characteristic feature of many inexpensive headsets. Third-party headphones from trusted manufacturers (gaming and vacuum Vivanco HS 200 WT) do not have the above-mentioned drawback. The sound in them is of high quality and has good detail and depth.

Another pleasant bonus of the smartphone is the ability to listen to FM radio stations, which is carried out via the built-in radio module. Traditionally, for it to work, you need to connect a wired headset, which acts as an antenna.

Camera

The Lenovo S60 smartphone is equipped with two very good digital camera modules.

The main one is a 13-megapixel module with an f/2.0 aperture, autofocus and a powerful LED flash. It is capable of shooting video with a maximum resolution of 1080p at 30 fps. Also in the camera settings there is a “Quad HD” item, which corresponds to the parameters 2160p at 30 fps, but, unfortunately, it does not work correctly and resets the recording settings to a lower resolution of 480p.

Despite this small software flaw, the quality of the resulting photo and video materials is generally pleasantly pleasing and deserves good reviews. The picture looks bright and rich, featuring pleasant color rendering with a natural range of colors and shades. The detailing of the image, which is capable of conveying small details throughout the entire area of the image, and not just in the central part of the frame, did not disappoint. The only drawback is the rather aggressive operation of the noise reduction system, which in some cases can completely blur a homogeneous area of the photo, for example, foliage on trees, replacing it with an equivalent color texture.

The front camera of the smartphone is represented by a 5-megapixel module with an f/2.2 aperture, fixed focus and wide-angle optics. It has a good system of auto-retouching and filling with light (imitation flash), and also supports video recording in 1080p resolution at 30 fps, which will be quite enough not only for web conferences and making Internet calls, but also for photographing very good selfie.

Branded software, which is responsible for controlling the operation of cameras, is distinguished by its simplicity of execution and intuitive interface. Buttons and menu shortcuts have fairly large icons, which makes navigation much easier. The user has several preset operating modes and a number of manual settings, among which it is worth highlighting white balance and ISO level control. The software works quickly and comfortably. It is perfect for undemanding users for taking amateur photos and videos.

User interface

By default, the smartphone under review runs on the Android 4.4 KitKat operating system, which is complemented by the proprietary Vibe UI 2.0 shell. Immediately after activating the device, you can update it to Android 5.0.2 Lollipop using wireless function FOTA.

This symbiosis looks and feels very fresh and attractive. It provides the user with the necessary functionality. Learn more about the possibilities branded shell can be found in our previous reviews ( and ). We, in turn, will dwell on its main features.

Thus, compared to earlier versions, the function of adjusting the display color rendering was cut out of the operating system, and the design of the notification shade and multitasking menu was brought into line with the style of the new OS Android Lollipop. They began to look more contrasty and bright, and were also easy to read in almost any lighting. At the same time, the notification shade has acquired a huge number of quick access icons and a useful event log, while the multitasking menu has learned to display a larger number running applications on one screen. However, the last point can also be considered a disadvantage, since now the program status shortcuts look slightly vertically compressed, which, to be honest, does not add to their attractiveness.

But what really arouses interest is the new design themes and a number of pre-installed desktop wallpapers. They qualitatively transform the design of the system, making it unique among devices of this class.

Finally, I would like to mention the updated power manager. This utility helps significantly save battery power and significantly extends the battery life of an overall quite productive and multifunctional gadget.

The smartphone settings menu is divided into two tabs: “System” and “Special”. The first section groups standard menu items that provide access to settings and information about the state of the OS, while the second concentrates a number of features designed to make life easier for the user. For example, here you can activate the recognition of some “smart” gestures, program device operation scenarios depending on the time of day, and also configure the display of the “Smart Menu” utility, which provides fast access to a row useful applications and functions.

The speed of the proprietary shell, as well as the entire operating system as a whole, is pleasantly pleasing and does not cause any particular complaints. The animation is smooth and timely, and flipping through desktops occurs quickly and without noticeable jerks or hitches. Sometimes there are slight delays when unlocking the screen or launching particularly heavy applications, but this has virtually no effect on the ease of use of the device.

Productivity and communication capabilities

The Lenovo S60 smartphone is built on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 (MSM8916) microprocessor with maximum clock frequency 1.2 GHz and 1 MB L2 cache. It is manufactured based on the 64-bit ARMv8 microarchitecture (4 ARM Cortex-A53 cores) in accordance with the 28nm process technology. The video accelerator is a built-in Qualcomm Adreno 306 adapter with an operating clock frequency of 450 MHz and support for the OpenGL ES 3.0, OpenCL 1.1 and DirectX 11.1 APIs. The amount of RAM is 2 GB, and the permanent memory is 8 GB, of which about 2.28 GB is available to the user. The device also supports microSD memory cards up to 32 GB.

As can be seen from the results obtained, the overall performance of the smartphone is at an average level, which fully corresponds to the stated characteristics. The device copes well with almost all everyday tasks (mobile surfing, checking email, typing and editing text) and is perfect for the needs of the casual user.

As for the gaming capabilities of the smartphone, in general it can run and process gaming applications at low, and in some cases, medium graphics settings, while delivering quite satisfactory picture quality and FPS level. But otherwise, the gadget under review should be called a 100% working tool, as the test results eloquently testify to.

The downside of the relatively low performance is the modest heat dissipation and good energy efficiency of the hardware platform. Even with fairly active use, the temperature of the device does not rise above a comfortable level, and its body remains only slightly warm and pleasant to the touch.

By default, the 5-inch device supports most popular audio and video formats, which makes it a good portable media center.

In terms of communication capabilities, the Lenovo S60 smartphone is a modern mobile device, since it has full support for all common mobile networks, including high-speed 4G LTE:

  • 2G GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 MHz;
  • 3G UMTS 900 / 2100 MHz;
  • 4G LTE 800 / 1800 / 2100 / 2600 MHz.

The gadget is equipped with a dual-SIM radio module supporting Nano-SIM and Micro-SIM cards, which operates according to the Dual standard SIM Dual Standby. This means that when one SIM card is active, the second one will be temporarily unavailable. It is also worth noting that the Nano-SIM slot supports all previously mentioned mobile standards, while the Micro-SIM slot can only work in the 2G GSM network.

During all the test calls, we were not able to detect a single significant flaw. Both on the part of the user and on the part of the interlocutor, voice transmission was at a high level and was distinguished by a pleasant and clearly distinguishable sound. No interference, extraneous noise, interruptions or spontaneous resets were observed. However, this indicator primarily depends on the telecom operator used and can change under the influence of various external factors: distance to the mobile tower, signal strength or the presence of electromagnetic interference.

For ease of use, the smartphone has a vibration alert. However, in this model it has a fairly mediocre vibration force, so that if it is in a jacket or coat pocket, it may go unnoticed.

The communication capabilities of the Lenovo S60 are represented by the most popular wireless communication modules: Bluetooth 4.0 and Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n. The latter has support Wi-Fi functions Hotspot, but is only capable of operating in one band (2.4 GHz). The device can also broadcast multimedia content using DLNA wireless technology.

Contrary to information from the official website, the built-in navigation module of our test sample was able to work with three geopositioning systems at once: GPS, GLONASS and Beidou. On average, during testing it found about 30 satellites and successfully connected to 10 of them. At the same time, the cold start time took only 10 seconds, and the error in determining the location reached 6 meters. In addition, do not forget about the presence of a digital compass, which also accurately determined the cardinal directions.

Autonomous operation

Lenovo S60 is equipped with a non-removable lithium polymer battery with a capacity of 2150 mAh. This is a relatively small indicator, but the gadget is capable of working for a full day without any difficulties in autonomous mode when performing everyday tasks. Well, if you use the capabilities of your smartphone more rationally, while activating the software energy saving mode, you can easily achieve almost 48 hours of uninterrupted operation of the device on a single charge.

For example, while watching HD video (MPEG-4/AVC, M4V container, 4 Mbit/s stream) at 50% display brightness and Wi-Fi and GPS modules turned on, the device was completely discharged in just under 11 hours, and in the case of a game simulation using Asphalt 8: Airborne - in almost 4 hours at 100% display brightness.

The estimated battery life according to the PCMark benchmark (photo processing, document editing, watching video content, listening to music, etc.) reached 6 hours 55 minutes, while data from the GFXBench benchmark showed as much as 380 minutes. It should also be noted that in both cases the Wi-Fi and GPS modules were turned on, and the display brightness was at 50%.

To completely restore the battery to its original condition, you need to spend 3 hours of free time using the charger included in the package.

Results

As we expected, the smartphone LenovoS60 turned out to be quite an interesting and very versatile device. Thanks to a reasonable balance between price, design and good functionality it is an excellent choice for those users who are looking for a stylish and practical mobile device.

For a relatively small budget of $200, the potential owner of a gadget gets a high-quality 5-inch IPS screen, a productive and energy-efficient hardware platform, good digital camera modules and a good lithium polymer battery, which, paired with proprietary software, ensures almost two days of uninterrupted operation of the device on a single charge.

In addition, the smartphone boasts dual SIM cards and full support for modern 4G LTE mobile networks (only for Nano-SIM cards), which turns it into a high-speed communications center. Also, the usual wireless modules Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS have not gone away, which are already a gentleman's set of every mobile device and allow the owner to always stay in touch.

Based on the above advantages, we can safely recommend the reviewed smartphone for purchase as a multifunctional mobile solution with stylish design and an adequate price.

F-stop (also known as aperture, aperture, or f-number) is a measure of the size of a lens's aperture, which determines the amount of light entering the sensor. The lower the f-number, the larger the aperture and the more light reaches the sensor. Typically the f-number is specified to correspond to the maximum possible aperture of the aperture.

f/2.2
Focal length

Focal length indicates the distance in millimeters from the sensor to the optical center of the lens. Equivalent focal length (35mm) is the focal length of a mobile device camera equal to the focal length of a 35mm full-frame sensor, which will achieve the same viewing angle. It is calculated by multiplying the actual focal length of a mobile device's camera by the crop factor of its sensor. Crop factor can be defined as the ratio between the diagonals of a 35 mm full-frame sensor and the sensor of a mobile device.

2.9 mm (millimeters)
line of sight

The field of view shows how much of the scene in front of the camera will be captured. This depends not only on the focal length, but also on the size of the sensor. It can be calculated using the viewing angle of the optics and the crop factor of the sensor. The viewing angle is the angle between the two farthest diagonal points of the frame.

Specific Absorption Rate (SAR)

The SAR level refers to the amount of electromagnetic radiation absorbed by the human body while using a mobile device.

Head SAR level (EU)

The SAR level indicates the maximum amount of electromagnetic radiation that the human body is exposed to when holding a mobile device close to the ear in a conversation position. In Europe, the maximum permissible SAR value for mobile devices is limited to 2 W/kg per 10 grams of human tissue. This standard established by the CENELEC Committee in accordance with IEC standards, subject to the ICNIRP guidelines of 1998.

0.402 W/kg (Watt per kilogram)
Body SAR level (EU)

The SAR level indicates the maximum amount of electromagnetic radiation to which the human body is exposed when holding a mobile device at hip level. The maximum permissible SAR value for mobile devices in Europe is 2 W/kg per 10 grams of human tissue. This standard has been established by the CENELEC Committee in compliance with the ICNIRP 1998 guidelines and IEC standards.

The appearance of the Lenovo S60-a is interesting in that it slightly resembles iPhone design 6 - similar corner radii, a mutually rounded edge around the perimeter and holes for speakers in the end of the lower part of the case, a similar location for the rear camera.

Dark gray plastic looks stricter, the white body gives a feeling of lightness. Although the smartphone itself is not heavy - total 128 g, one might say, almost weightless, compared to modern giants with a screen more 5.5 inches.

By the way, the plastic of the case is glossy, which certainly affects the appearance: when it is clean, it looks elegant and polished, and when it has collected fingerprints, it looks sloppy. However, the manufacturer took care of protection and equipped his brainchild transparent bumper cover made of polycarbonate, covering the entire body, except for the screen. And the latter comes with a protective film designed to protect it from accidental scratches.

But we liked the screen without it - the glass has an oleophobic coating and fingerprints remain less on it and are easily erased with just one pass of a soft cloth.

Speaking of appearance, we note that the designers have conveniently placed the power key - it appears just under the middle finger if you hold the smartphone with your left hand, and under the thumb if you hold it with your left hand.

What makes us wary is that the keys are just as glossy, rounded and made to match the color of the body. The manufacturer did not add any ribbing or protrusions. Therefore, feel them tactile pretty hard.

On the left side there are two slide slots, made flush with the body - one to accommodate two SIM cards (micro and nano form factor) and one for a MicroSD memory card. When installing a SIM card, you need to take into account that when using two cards, 4G data transfer technology will be available only on slot 1 (nano form factor). With one SIM card, 4G is also available on slot 2 (micro).

By the way, thanks to the support of two standby modes both SIM cards work simultaneously, and you can receive calls to any of them. When one SIM card is in use, the other is automatically put into standby mode.

The slots can only be opened using the included key (but you can also try with a paper clip). The holes are made in the trays themselves, so you need to be careful when pressing, to prevent the plastic from cracking tray.

Below the screen there are three functional touch buttons, which the manufacturer decided not to highlight. The icons on them are dimly marked, so all hope is on the user’s visual memory.

Above the screen, in addition to the speaker, front camera and proximity and lighting sensors, there is also a status indicator hidden under white paint - it lights up while the device is charging. At the end of it, it simply goes out.

The rear camera and flash are slightly recessed into the body, which means that their glass they won't scratch the table. But the downside of this solution may be the accumulation of dirt at the edges of the camera when wiping it.

Screen and sound

Turning on the Lenovo S60-a screen for the first time causes a storm of sensations. The bright, rich colors of the wallpaper screen literally attack the user's optic nerve, convincing him that no one else has such a colorful screen.

The screen is really bright and the colors are rich and natural. It is comfortable to work with the device outdoors in dim sunshine already at a brightness of slightly more than half the settings scale. IPS matrix with HD resolution (1280x720) very economical, and with prolonged use of the screen the battery does not drain much.

However, the downside of efficiency is that viewing angles are not very large - when the view deviates from the perpendicular in any direction, the picture darkens, but not much. White color, compared to the screens of other smartphones, is perhaps the most natural.

As for the sound, it is worthy of praise. During a conversation, the interlocutor's voice is clear, clear and clear. The calling speaker does not wheeze, it is moderately saturated with highs and low frequencies.

Music playback test via built-in player showed good elaboration of the details of the sound composition and soft bass even without using an equalizer. Music lovers will certainly like the sound.

The same goes for sound in video. The built-in player is capable of playing most AVI movies and some MKVs with sound without any problems. But you need to be prepared that the downloaded movie will be played without sound. Rectify the situation a third party player will help, for example, MX Player with an AC3 codec downloaded from the Internet.

Features and performance

The Lenovo S60-a uses a modern budget and at the same time quite powerful 64-bit 4-core Qualcomm MSM8916 processor Snapdragon 410 with clock frequency 1.2 GHz.

The chip is responsible for graphics in games Adreno 306. Combined with availability on board 2 GB RAM this ensures good performance in all applications and games. Compared to solutions on older MTK processors, you will not experience discomfort either in the interface itself or when scrolling through the pages of sites with an abundance of graphics. In the AnTuTu test the device scored 23310 points.

In comparison, his older brother Lenovo S90 with a metal body, but with the same filling, scored significantly less - 19 900 . Moreover, our test subject slightly, but surpassed the flagship LG G3 in RAM speed and CPU speed - in integer processing.

The smartphone will not stumble when playing video in Full HD, including over the network. The only thing is videos recorded with your own camera built-in player reproduces well, by itself interface slows down, and, for example, pausing or rewinding doesn’t work the first time.

In addition to web surfing and video, the smartphone also copes well with hardware-intensive games. In particular, the manufacturer has already installed games such as Asphalt 8, Real Footbal 2015, Spider-Man, etc. on the device.

The device's built-in memory is only 8 GB, however, with the help of memory card integration, this disadvantage can be easily mitigated.

A little about the interface

Lenovo S60-a interface presents proprietary add-on VIBE UI 2.0. The OS out of the box is Android 4.4.4 KitKat. But, during testing, our device received an over-the-air update to the version 5.02 .

On appearance it had almost no effect. For users accustomed to the standard interface of Android devices, the VIBE UI interface may be somewhat confusing, because... This shell does not have a collection of applications, and the list of settings has been completely redesigned.

For those newbies, the installed software includes special application“Tutorial”, which clearly shows how to use most of the functions of the smartphone.

In general, the interface is convenient, but the menu font seemed too small to us, and the letters are too dense, which can cause discomfort for people with impaired vision. In the notification line, you can enable the display of battery charge as a percentage, which is convenient. But for some reason the developers placed the numbers in the battery icon itself, making them small and difficult to read.

From installed applications us I really liked the Security antivirus package, which includes user data protection, theft protection, junk file cleaning and backup.

But, unfortunately, after updating to OS version 5.02, this is a wonderful application disappeared without a trace from the applications, like a number of others convenient programs, such as a calendar. We hope that the company will somehow return these wonderful applications to users of updated smartphones.
