Characteristics of the Nokia Lumia 520 phone. Memory cards are used in mobile devices to increase the amount of memory for saving data

A series of phones developed by Nokia for last years was defeated day after day. Platform Microsoft Windows Phone did not become popular; all investments from Redmond, alas, went bankrupt. The picture is sad, but, oddly enough, in the post-Soviet space there were many ardent Nokia fans who remained loyal to the Finns, as well as those for whom the presence of Windows on all gadgets they used became a key factor when choosing a device. Thanks to them, the budget segment Nokia phones still survived, one of the representatives of the “genre” and will be considered in this material. So, let's start the review of the Lumiya 520 smartphone: characteristics, main features and reviews from owners.

Equipment

In addition to the phone in the box you can find:

  • Charger for connecting to the mains.
  • Rechargeable battery.
  • Cable for charging from the mains and connecting to a computer for data synchronization.
  • Branded stereo headset.
  • Guide for setting up and using the phone.

Housing, controls

Dimensions: 119 by 64 by 10 millimeters.

Weight: 124 grams.

The entire line of smartphones developed under the auspices of the updated Nokia is produced in similar cases. One can feel a single design vision and careful attention to the exterior of gadgets. The classic “sandwich”, consisting of a black front panel and colored polycarbonate, is also used in this model. The smartphone case is collapsible, under the cover there is a battery, a slot for a memory card and a SIM card.

On the front panel of the phone you can only find a display, touch control keys (buttons: back, menu and search) and a speaker, neatly fitted into the very top part housing, at the junction with the lid. On the back of the smartphone there is a cutout of the main speaker, the manufacturer’s logo and the camera. On the right side of the smartphone there are traditional Lumiya controls (camera shutter, power button and volume rocker). The left half is empty. At the bottom there is a micro-USB input for charging and connecting to a computer. On the top there is a standard 3.5 mm headphone input.

Thanks to its compact size, the phone will easily fit into any hand, and the matte plastic will not allow it to slip out on the go. Ergonomics at the highest level. The phone comes in five colors: red, white, black, blue and yellow. There are almost no marks or minor damage left on the back cover, so a case for the Lumiya 520 is unlikely to become necessary; in this regard, the design is quite practical.

Display

It’s worth mentioning right away that we are talking about budget smartphone, so you shouldn’t expect any revelations regarding the screen. The Lumiya 520 phone is equipped with a compact display with a diagonal of only 4 inches and a resolution of 800 by 480 pixels. Even with small sizes, attentive (picky) users undoubtedly You will notice individual pixels and the overall graininess of the picture. In everyday use, this drawback does not cause discomfort. Many will also be disappointed by the lack of exclusive ClearBlack technology, which is used in other, more expensive gadgets from the company. Rely on high-quality color rendition upon contact sun rays it makes no sense, the screen will go blind. On the other hand, the screen has an IPS matrix, which means that potential owners of the gadget will be able to enjoy the widest possible viewing angles. Residents of cold regions will be pleased with the ultra-sensitive display that can recognize touches even when wearing gloves.

Processor, memory, performance

“Lumiya 520” is far from a flagship gadget, and primarily it is aimed at people whose needs are below average, so there is no need to talk about serious “hardware” equipment, which, in general, is not a problem, given the level of system optimization , but it will affect gamers. In a smartphone, as in the majority of people Windows Phone devices using the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 chip. The clock speed of this beast reaches 1000 megahertz in each of the cores. Even with this chip, the phone works very quickly, smoothly, and the system always remains responsive. The main performance limiter is small volume random access memory, it reached only 512 megabytes, which automatically makes a number of complex programs inaccessible to this baby.

Among other things, the device has room for 8 gigabytes of main memory, of which only 5 are available to the user. Fortunately, the situation can be corrected with the help of an additional physical array (microSD memory cards are supported).

Camera

One of Nokia's main strengths has always been its special photography capabilities, which are head and shoulders above the competition. In budget solutions, alas, everything is standard. The gadget under review has a single 5-megapixel lens, without flash. The pictures turn out very mediocre even in good lighting, not to mention photographs taken indoors. In principle, the camera performs a rather utilitarian function.

To brighten up the life of the owners of the Lumiya 520 smartphone, Nokia decided to leave all the camera software features available, including all kinds of filters, processing tools and exclusive functions such as creating “come to life” photos.

There is no front camera at all, so selfie lovers will have to either come to terms with it or develop the skill of shooting “themselves” with the main camera.

Autonomy

Today, the operating time on a single charge of any smartphone is no more than a day (with regular use), the same truth is true for the Lumiya 520 smartphone. The characteristics of the device are not the most promising anyway, and then the autonomy also lets us down. This is due to a battery with a capacity of only 1430 milliamps. According to the manufacturer, the smartphone is capable of:

  • Live more than 10 hours of talk time on third generation networks.
  • Play music in the background for about 60 hours.
  • Play video with HD resolution for about 6 hours.

Of course, some of these indicators are just skillfully conducted, gentle tests that are very different from real life. Even fine-tuning the system will not help to significantly increase the operating time, so you will have to put up with the fact that even before the end of the working day the phone will ask to be plugged in.

Communications

The smartphone, unfortunately, cannot boast of modern wireless interfaces and contactless data exchange technology.

The only wired connection on the phone is a micro-USB port. The list of wireless interfaces includes: Wi-Fi supporting 802.11 frequency and Bluetooth third generation. The vaunted NFC could not be detected. The phone has a GPS module. Extensive list of supported cellular networks is also an important feature of the Lumiya 520.

Characteristics of the software platform

Many users, upon the release of Lumiya smartphones, identified a lot of common features connecting them with the iPhone, including a unique operating system that follows similar principles and ideas.

Complex preset"Lumiya 520" does not require, all you need to do is create an account, after which you can immediately start working with the phone.

First of all, the user is greeted by an ascetic lock screen, which displays notifications, as well as information about the date and time. Immediately following it is a minimalistic, innovative interface developed in the depths of Microsoft, called “Live Tiles”. Actually, the entire interface is built on blocks of information, which are also shortcuts for applications. Its main idea is that a person can get the maximum necessary information without opening programs.

The system is quite fast and does not irritate with minor errors and visual artifacts. Rarely do more serious problems arise due to errors in third-party software, which tightly “hang” the gadget. In such situations, there is nothing left but to restart Lumiya; this is done by holding down all three control keys (physical, located on the right side of the phone).

The most important problem of the system is the shortage of third-party “software”, because the manufacturer has not been able to force developers to release applications for the newly created platform.

"Lumiya 520": reviews

At first glance, the Nokia device is significantly inferior in many respects and does not look very attractive compared to its closest competitors. However, it has found a whole army of fans who scour the market for something affordable and as practical as possible. The practicality of the phone is highlighted by the majority of users, saying that it is easy to connect the smartphone to a computer, that it is possible hot swap SIM cards, as well as access to the battery. Repairing the Lumiya also costs pennies, which will please those who buy a phone for a schoolchild. Many note high performance and autonomy in comparison with budget phones running on Android based. All these and many other factors noted ordinary users, create a completely new image of the Lumiya 520 smartphone, the characteristics of which are rarely replete with positive statements from professionals. The image of a strong budget employee in the best traditions of Nokia. The only question remains: how much does Lumiya 520 cost? The recommended price for the device in Russia varies within 8,000 rubles.

I bought the phone with my own money, so there will be criticism. I used this smartphone for a couple of months (and still use it to this day) to get a more complete impression of Microsoft ® Windows Phone ® 8.1 and make a small comparison with Android.
If anyone is interested, please see the cut :)

I have always been a fierce admirer of products that were in one way or another approved by Mao. It all started with STAR A2000, then Lenovo A750, and now Lenovo A820. And always MTK, Android and their minor problems.
The choice of smartphone for the 2014-2015 season fell on the Xiaomi Red Rice 1s, but some of its problems turned me off. With little effort I decided to try both branded and unusual smartphone. Apple's decisions after Steve's death and the lack of Bootrom vulnerabilities in the A5 and older chips, as well as iOS 7, turned me off.
I heard a lot that WP 8 did not get rid of the remnants of the seventh version, although it works smoothly and stably, I decided to try it for only $93 (at that time, still at the “old” rate). Initially, the requirements were as follows: Preferably Nokia, no more than $100 and the ability to install 8.1.
Won the final battle of comparison Nokia Lumia 520, losing to 8S (after all, it was doubtful that it would be updated). I bought it with the promising JTAG JailBreak.

Few people are interested in the technical characteristics of WP smartphones, but suddenly:
Display: 4" 800x480 IPS
SoC: Qualcomm MSM8227, 1000 MHz (slightly inferior to snapdragon 200)
Own memory: 8 GB
Memory card slot: Yes
Slot for SIM cards: 1 micro sim
Battery: 1430 mAh removable
There is also bluetooth 4.0, GPS/GLONASS and 4G*

The parcel took 23 days to reach me, which was already at odds with the traditional 15 days.

Unboxing

After opening the postal package, I saw a cardboard (one might say “green”) package, which is not very similar to the one in which the lumias for Russia are contained.

Later I found out that this was packaging for decaying America, and the phone itself was for the AT&T operator, but unlocked by IMEI.

The equipment inside was rather sparse:

The instructions were from Lumia 820, but who reads them? :)

After turning it on (it was already configured), I saw these same tiles:

Children under 18 years of age - please indicate in your account Microsoft age 18+, otherwise the device will not allow you to install any applications at all (or even update them) without parental consent. This can be treated without flashing and SMS, but according to reviews, many people have stumbled upon this.

Initially, WP 8.0 was installed, after a series of OTA updates (about 1.5 GB) I received the coveted 8.1 and now my desktop looks like this:

Ironically, I received from friends a broken HTC 8S, which was released with the official 8.1, which was then withdrawn.
In terms of smoothness, 8.0 is better than 8.1, but only starting from 8.1 can we say that WP is a modern mobile platform. In terms of smoothness, it’s not even close to the Lenovo A820. Comparing WP 8.1 and iOS 8.1, I come to the conclusion that Microsoft is even superior to its competitors in some aspects (smoothness, stability)

But where is the criticism? Where is all my anger? And he's already here!
Releasing perfect products is not about Microsoft. If no serious problems were found at the software level, then you need to fix the hardware:
1. The battery does not fit tightly enough to the contacts, so when shaken, the phone loses contact and turns off. This can be solved by placing a piece of paper under the battery compartment (however, this prevents the lid from closing, which is extremely inconvenient to open
2. Dust, dust everywhere. It's 2014, and dust creeping under the screen is still common, even in branded smartphones. My sloths don't have this problem.
3. The weakest point is the hardware keys. The pusher breaks very often. The power button broke first, then the volume down button:

(in the photo the power button pusher simply unsoldered and fell into the housing)
Initially I thought that I was a hulk. But no, judging by the reviews in Yandex Market.
The case is very slippery, and the location of the power button is the most inconvenient I've ever encountered.

Comparison with Android:

The system provides a voice assistant in Russian, which works without the Internet (and is better with the Internet), but in terms of functionality it is only capable of opening applications and turning on the necessary music.
If you install English language and the country of the USA, then access to Cortana will open, which is inferior even to S-Voice and Siri.
There are a lot of applications in the market, but! The situation with applications now resembles 2011-2012, when Google Play began to clear up the garbage a little. Popular applications either exist or there are copies of them. The entire position of the marketplace can be expressed as follows: there is no choice. For any specific task there is only one application, the concentration is very poorly developed.
Unlike the same Android, where there is a huge selection of applications, and the phone will not be capricious: I will not install this, I need 1 GB of RAM to play subway surfers (this problem was fixed half a year ago).
System animations are of the highest priority, so if there are problems with applications, they simply freeze, without reactions, but there are no sharp animations, especially in 8.0, where everything is too slow, although there is time to enjoy the rendering :)
The system interface is very unusual, and minor shortcomings (for example, the lack of a toggle switch mobile internet in the curtain) - cannot be corrected, which can cause some pain.
It connects via the MTP protocol, which can create some problems for non-Windows users, and the exchange speed is not so great.

Camera:

The quality of the pictures is satisfactory, approximately at the level of the iPhone 4. The main problem is the slowness, because... When shooting, he always tries to use HDR in one way or another.

Big photo

In conclusion, I can say that this good smartphone for getting to know WP, but also for the user expecting stability (and as a second smartphone). Although for less money one Russian company offers an even better device on WP 8.1, but you will find it yourself;)

According to tradition (where would we be without this):
(I'll tear you for lumia!)

Footnotes:
In America (more precisely in AT&T), the word 4G is not called LTE, but only 3.5G (HSUPA)

Thank you for your attention!

Nokia Lumia 520 repeats the appearance of other phones in the Lumia line - and that's good. While most cheap smartphones look rather unattractive, the design of the Lumia 520 is pleasing to the eye and comfortable to the hand.

On the front side there is a touch screen with three typical and mandatory Windows Phone buttons below it.

All additional buttons are on the side (including power - which is convenient). I'm also glad that there is a separate button for the camera.

The buttons, however, are not labeled in any way, but you can actually figure out where everything is without any help.

At the bottom there is a micro-USB connector, and at the top there is a 3.5 mm headphone input.

Screen

The Lumia 520 uses a 4-inch touchscreen capacitive screen with a resolution of 480x800 pixels. The screen supports multi-touch with recognition of up to 5 touches simultaneously. The most interesting thing is that the sensor reacts not only to fingers (and even gloved fingers), but also to some (not all) other objects - for example, metal ones. At the same time, the screen is capacitive, not resistive.

Screen quality on good level- There are no complaints about color rendition and clarity, only the brightness in the sun is not enough.

There is also no oleophobic coating, which is why you have to periodically wipe the screen with a cloth so that dry dirt does not remain on it.

Software

The phone runs Windows Phone 8.0, the main features of which are a single interface for all phones of any brand, as well as smooth interface animation, regardless of the installed processor. If inexpensive smartphones Android devices often slow down and are not always comfortable to use; with the Nokia Luma 520, despite the price, this will not happen. If a game or application runs on this phone (due to the small amount of RAM, 512 MB, not all three-dimensional games will work here), then most likely, unless the developers messed something up, there will be no problems with them in future work .

In general, thanks to the integration of Windows Phone with social networks Twitter and Facebook, as well as a rich set of programs from Nokia, you can use the Lumia 520 without even installing anything additional. However, this depends on the preferences of the owner. If you need Skype or a client for ICQ, Jabber, the VKontakte social network or the photo social network Instagram - all this can be found in the application store.

But let's see what the Lumia 520 offers out of the box.

Firstly, it is worth noting the mobile office from Microsoft. This application allows you to create and edit documents of such programs Microsoft Office, like Word, Excel, Power Point. Work with cloud storage SkyDrive - so, if you have the Internet, you don’t even need to upload documents to your phone separately.

Secondly, as I already mentioned, social Facebook networks and Twitter. You can monitor the statuses of your friends, as well as post messages (including those containing images) without resorting to the help of other applications. Also supported and not very popular with us LinkedIn network, plus, services (primarily email) from Google, Yandex, Yahoo, Rambler and Mail.ru.

Thirdly, full-fledged Nokia navigation is available on the smartphone completely free of charge: this includes HERE Maps, HERE Drive voice navigation and the HERE Transit public transport directory.

HERE Transit, by the way, includes many Russian cities - so the program will be useful not only for Muscovites and St. Petersburg residents.

Fourthly, Nokia offers many interesting utilities for the camera, including: “Smart Photo” - a program that allows you to take several pictures of a single scene (for example, a group photo), and then combine the best moments of all the pictures into one. So, if someone blinked in one picture, and someone else in another, and in the third picture someone got horns, it’s not a problem.

“Panorama”, as you might guess, is intended for shooting panoramas.

The "Live Photos" application is used to create so-called cinemagrams (or "gifs"): photographs in which one element can move. For example, these:

However, there are many examples of truly interesting cinemagrams on the Internet.

There is also a “Photo Studio” application, which allows you to apply various effects to any photograph you take in one click.

Multimedia

The smartphone can be used both as an audio player and as a video player (HD video is not a problem for it). The sound is slightly worse than the flagship Nokia Lumia 920, but if you are not a music lover, you may not notice the difference. The main thing is that thanks to support for memory cards up to 64 GB, the question of a lack of memory is unlikely to arise in the foreseeable future.

The camera here is quite ordinary - it’s not a flagship, but it’s not “cheap” either. For publication in in social networks The photos will be fine, although they will be visually inferior to more expensive phones - especially the Lumia 920.

Battery

Nokia Lumia 520 is an unpretentious smartphone, so normal mode of use, it can last two days (or even three) on a single battery charge. But even with the most active use, if you don’t put it in your pocket at all, it will definitely survive until the evening. Well, the best part is the 61 hours of music declared by the manufacturer (which is close to reality) - not every player is capable of this.

Total

It can still be cheap and good. If you are not interested in gigahertz and you don’t care how many cores there are in a smartphone, in general, if you need modern smartphone, but without frills - then this is, perhaps, just the Nokia Lumia 520. What else can you get for 8 thousand rubles? Numerous Androidphones from unknown people Chinese manufacturers, or from well-known ones, but with constant “brakes” and “lags” of the interface. In any case, few brands of Nokia's level will sell new smartphone with a 4-inch screen at this price.

Of course, it’s worth considering that the camera in the Lumia 520 is far from flagships, modern 3D games most likely will not run, and there is no oleophobic coating on the screen. But if none of this scares you, then you are unlikely to be disappointed in this smartphone.

MWC this year along with the Lumia 720. Thus, the Finnish company is trying to focus on lower segment market. The gadget will be one of the most affordable WP8 smartphones. We can say that the phone is a stripped down version of the Lumia 720.

We will present the main disadvantages that, in our opinion, this device has:

  • some well-known applications are missing or incompatible with 512 MB of RAM;
  • no FM radio;
  • no front camera;
  • no LED flash;
  • no system file manager;
  • SatNav voice navigation is limited to one country.

Let's start with unpacking. The kit did not receive anything new. Inside, in addition to the required documentation, you will find, microUSB cable and headphones.

The smartphone itself is very compact by modern standards. It is easy to operate with one hand. Its dimensions are 119.9x64x9.9 mm, and its weight is 124 g. The gadget is not the thinnest, but it cannot be said that it is too thick.

Nokia has created a simple and smart design that works equally well across the entire WP8 line of smartphones.

There's a hint of a unibody design throughout the phone, enhanced by the phone's solid feel in the hand, but the battery cover is actually removable so the battery can be accessed. There are also slots for SIM cards and for . The Nokia Lumia 520 lacks some of the refinement of the Nokia Lumia 720, but don't forget that we're dealing with the cheapest device in this category.

The smartphone will be available in black, white, red, yellow and blue colors. Here, as in the Lumia 820, you can change the rear panels.

The layout of the controls remains the same across all Nokia WP8 smartphones. Hardware buttons are placed on the right side, dial touch buttons controls are located under the screen, the left side remains empty.

So, below the display you can see the “Back”, “Home” and “Search” buttons. At the very bottom you can notice a tiny microphone hole. Above the screen there is a speaker, proximity and light sensors. Nokia Lumia 520 does not have a front camera.

The power/lock button, volume rocker and camera key are on the right side.

There are no buttons or slots on the left side, unlike the Lumia 720.

The 3.5mm headphone jack is located at the top of the Nokia Lumia 520.

The microUSB port is located, as usual, at the bottom of the smartphone.

Removable back cover made of matte plastic and equipped with a 5-megapixel camera, Nokia logo and speaker grille in the lower right corner.

Take off back panel easy enough. After which you get access to a 1430 mAh lithium-ion battery, slots for a SIM card and a microSD memory card.

Overall, the Lumia 520 is a very pleasant smartphone to use. Although not the most compact, it will fit into most pockets and hands.

Performance and Software

Nokia Lumia 520 has the same Qualcomm MSM8227 chipset as other WP8 smartphones, with a dual-core Krait processor clock frequency 1 GHz, with Adreno 305 graphics accelerator and 512 MB of RAM.

This is close to what the flagship WP8 models are equipped with (and noticeably better than that of the lower part of the mid-price segment of Android devices), which, combined with a relatively light operating system Windows system Phone 8 gives good performance.

Permanent memory in a smartphone - . It can be expanded using microSD cards for 64 GB.

Eat Wi-Fi support, 3G networks, A-GPS/GLONASS and Bluetooth 3.0.

We expected the Lumia 520 to be on par with other entry- and mid-range WP8 devices we've tested in SunSpider and BrowserMark 2 benchmarks. It turns out it's about on par with the Lumia 720, which is better than we expected to see for its price range .

Screen

Nokia Lumia 520 is equipped with a 4-inch screen with a resolution of 800x480 pixels, that is, the density is 233 ppi. That's higher than the Lumia 720, which has a 4.3-inch screen, but that's where the benefits end.

The Lumia 520 does not use ClearBlack technology, and contrast is lost. The viewing angles, we note, are not bad. It uses highly reflective glass, so the phone can hardly be used on a bright sunny day.

Camera

Nokia Lumia 520 boasts a 5-megapixel camera that can capture images with a resolution of up to 2592x1936 pixels.

The physical camera button, located on the right side, will turn on the phone and launch the camera app. The Camera app in Windows Phone 8 offers extensive settings, ranging from scenes and effects to white balance, contrast, saturation, sharpness, ISO and more. There is a dedicated macro focusing mode. Various lenses are also available in the application, such as panorama, Cinemagraph and others.

The photos come out quite good for a 5-megapixel camera: high level of detail, good contrast.

The noise level is quite high, and colors shift to the “cold” range.

Good photos are obtained when using the macro mode. The Lumia 520 can focus very close.

Now let's move on to video filming. Nokia Lumia 520 can record video with a resolution of 1280x720 pixels. It turns out quite smooth, but there are few fine details, colors with a higher than necessary saturation.

Bitrate – 10.5 Mbps at a frame rate of 30 per second. Unfortunately, the Lumia 520 can only capture mono audio at a bitrate of 98 Kbps and a sampling rate of 44 kHz.

Example video.

Battery

The smartphone is equipped lithium-ion battery capacity 1430 mAh. According to the manufacturer, one charge should be enough for 360 hours of standby time, up to 14 hours and 40 minutes of talk time over 2G networks, up to 9 hours and 40 minutes of talk time over 3G networks and up to 61 hours when listening to music.

Price

Nokia Lumia 520 price at Russian market– 7990 rubles.
