Design

Perhaps this is the main advantage of the phone. If in the photo the device looks like another smartphone-bar, then when you pick it up, the impression changes.

Secondly, the bright pink appearance will definitely appeal to the female half of users. Yes, what can I say. Even I liked it. Everything is so glamorous, but without fanaticism. Model Lenovo S850 Blue also plays well in the light, but more on that later.

The case, by the way, is assembled from several frames. On the front there is a panel with a display, a plastic frame around the perimeter, and on the back there is a glass cover.

Thirdly, there is a practical point.

Due to the bright colors and the use of glass on the front and back as the main material, fingerprints are not noticeable on the surface. In addition, any small debris, such as dust particles or hairs, does not stick to the body.

Above the screen there is an earpiece mesh, a front camera eye, a distance sensor and an ambient light sensor. The latter works correctly - the backlight changes quickly depending on the amount of light around. The brand name proudly displays here.

Below the display there are touch buttons. Their designations are unique to Lenovo phones, so it takes some time to get used to what each of them means. Another advantage of having a separate control panel is that the working space of the screen is not consumed by these buttons. This is important for any diagonal, be it 5 inches or larger.

The downside is that the buttons are not backlit. In the dark you have to press at random until you learn the commands by heart.

There's something interesting at the back. No, placing the camera with LED flash in the top right corner is normal. But the glowing Lenovo brand name is a cool feature. The backlight works when the device is charging, when receiving notifications, when talking with a subscriber, and also for some time after unlocking. Looks especially impressive in the dark!

On the bottom edge there is a hole for a microphone, and the top is occupied by two connectors: 3.5 mm for connecting a headset, as well as a Micro USB port.

The rocker key for adjusting the volume, and along with it the power button, are located on the right side of the device. The keys are plastic and slightly wobbly in their grooves, but you can live with that.

Secondly, fonts, icons and the picture as a whole look smooth (pixel density 294 ppi), and processor resources are not spent on rendering the interface under some Full HD or, even worse, under QHD. There were no special color settings in the menu, but even without this the color rendition is good. There is a very slight bias of white towards cold tones, but this is not at all criminal.

First, a few words about the interface. The proprietary shell works for the most part smoothly and without problems. The system's response is good, but not great. Sometimes, especially when exiting an application, slight slowdowns are visible. In any case, nothing irritating was noticed.

As for performance in games, we can say that the vast majority of games start and run without any brakes. It is clear that the graphics settings are average. A high level is simply not available. This is the situation, for example, in Dead Trigger 2. On medium ones there are occasionally small picture lags, but otherwise everything is fine.

As for watching videos, the device plays even Full HD videos without problems.

In synthetic tests, the smartphone scores a small number of points. You can’t expect anything else from the device, since the main thing in such an average smartphone is the appearance and shell, and not performance. Performance compromise.

Camera

The front camera is a 5-megapixel sensor with a wide-angle lens. The fashion for selfies is not going away, but rather, on the contrary, it is becoming stronger. Lenovo could not be ignored. And for good reason!

Usually, competitors who focus on the photographic capabilities of the front camera become ambitious and, as a result, they put quite decent price tags on their products. But the Chinese were modest in this case.

The picture quality turned out to be very decent.

Look for yourself at an example of one of the images obtained during testing. The clarity of the picture, a really wide coverage of objects in the frame, the absence of soap - everything is very decent.

The resolution of this photo is 2560 x 1920 pixels with a 4:3 ratio. In the settings we set 16:9 and the output is already 2560 x 1440 pixels.

For the convenience of creating self-portraits, the developers have provided shooting using a timer or by touching any area of ​​the viewfinder. They didn’t do anything special.

The rear camera is already 13 megapixels with a photo resolution of 4208 x 3120 pixels. She's pretty good too. However, with flagship models Smartphones cannot be compared.

There are additional photography scenarios in the settings. Apart from panoramic photography, all of them are, in principle, useless, since in 95% of cases it is enough to completely automatic mode. There's no need to bother.

Now about video shooting. The device is capable of shooting video in Full HD resolution (1920 x 1080) at 30 frames per second. The file format is 3GP, which means you shouldn’t expect anything supernatural. Watch the video below.

Sound and multimedia

The external speaker of the smartphone is very loud. In a quiet room, a bell set to maximum volume can even hit your ears unpleasantly. You won't be able to miss a call even on a noisy street. This, by the way, is facilitated by the convenient location of the speaker on the side of the smartphone. Few manufacturers force themselves to take the trouble to install the speaker in the conventionally correct place. Usually this is the battery cover and the sound when the phone is lying on the back is noticeably muffled. In general, bravo, Lenovo!

As for the sound through headphones (third-party), everything is fine. On par with anyone else modern smartphone. The phone can be used as an MP3 player and, without a twinge of conscience, you can put your old “empetrish” in a drawer.

It’s interesting that by default a whole bunch of unnecessary applications are preinstalled here. Starting from some managers for transferring everything to everyone in the world, ending with a set of software for social networks.

Against this background, it is strange that even the simplest music player there was no space in the system.

Battery

Finally we managed to find a weak point in this smartphone. I was already starting to think that the guys from Lenovo managed to create the perfect budget phone. But no!

The smartphone has a non-removable battery with a capacity of 2150 mAh. For the built-in hardware and display, it would seem that this is more than enough for the device to be guaranteed to work for two days without recharging. All wrong.

With active use of the smartphone (three hours of screen operation, 2 hours of surfing the Internet via Wi-Fi, constant background notifications from the network (HSPA)) it will live until the night.

If you have an addiction to mobile toys (without fanaticism), then get ready for the device to sit down until the evening. But usually state employees have a moderate appetite, but this is not the case.

Instead of the usual “Battery” section, there is a proprietary Power Manager application that monitors and manages power supply. From here you can activate the energy saving mode (limiting background applications) or switch to an extreme saving scenario, when only the available functions will remain phone calls, SMS and alarm clock.

On some forums, users complain that the device does not turn on after the battery drains to zero. It's not just the wallpaper or screensaver that can be customized. You can choose your own animation when turned on, the appearance of the control panel or dialing numbers. An original approach.

In the “Special” menu you can configure a variety of gestures and device features. For example, you can place a button anywhere on the screen to quick access to the main smartphone tools (calculator, flashlight, etc.). Or activate a setting that allows you to unlock the screen even in sleep mode by simply swiping your finger across it.

In addition, if you shake the device in your hand, it will lock. If you bring it to your ear during a call, it will automatically answer. There are a whole bunch of simply vital settings here. The only thing left to do is decide whether someone needs it

Right out of the box, the device has a whole bunch of useless or shareware useful utilities. Among them was a program responsible for transforming the interface while driving a car. You can also control it with your voice. Surely this will be useful to someone.

Here's something else I noticed. The S850 has a strange feature. Time constantly runs an hour ahead, regardless of the SIM card installed in the phone. In the parameters there is a checkbox “Network date and time”, deactivating which allows you to “set” the time in manual mode. Only then does everything fall into place and there is no more naughtiness.

Over the past year and a half, Lenovo has been seriously concerned about increasing the attractiveness of its models for the average mass buyer. Readers who are accustomed to the fact that the average smartphone from Lenovo is usually referred to by journalists in reviews as a “black brick” have something to be surprised by, and this surprise cannot be called unpleasant. There have already been praises for the design, new models from the manufacturer are being received, and the company is producing and producing models, one more original than the other, and it’s not a matter of technical stuffing at all.

The hero of our today's review is an interesting model LenovoS850, combining a body covered with glass on both sides, a stylish appearance and good technical parameters at a very reasonable price, making this smartphone accessible to the widest consumer circles.

Well, the main feature of the model is stylish case, covered on both sides with tempered glass, which, according to the manufacturer’s plan, should make Lenovo buy it, and not one of its competitors.

The LenovoS850 box has a familiar look for this manufacturer: light white and gray cardboard with red insides. Inside the box, tightly and neatly packed, the following accessories are found (except for the mobile phone itself):

• protective film on the screen.

As you can see, the delivery includes everything you need, even a few nice bonuses, such as a bumper and microfiber for wiping a mobile phone. We also note that the included headphones look a little better than the usual plastic earplugs for Lenovo. Let's check how they sound.

The appearance of the Lenovo S850 is, in theory, the main pride of the manufacturer's designers. The smartphone body is of medium thickness with nicely and conveniently rounded edges on both sides, closed protective glass Gorilla Glass, which not only protects the model from mechanical damage, but also gives it a unique charm.

The desire to touch the glass of the back cover and try to scratch it is almost unconscious. And when you discover that the manufacturer’s logo on this cover lights up with a pleasant white matte light during certain events (turning on, charging, calling and missed event), you can only exhale in delight. We are sure that with this design discovery, Lenovo S850 will deserve more than one enthusiastic review from those who picked up the model for the first time. The smartphone definitely looks more expensive than its price, which is what the designers apparently hoped for. Another factor that may prompt you to buy the Lenovo S850 is its some similarity to the iPhone, although this is a debatable point.

The Lenovo S850 feels solid and weighty in your hands. This is primarily due to the sensations that arise from touching the glass of the back cover. Moreover, because of this, the thickness of the model is slightly increased compared to its classmates and is 8.2 mm. Other sizes fit into standard 5-inch frames. Operating a smartphone with one hand is quite possible.

The front panel is quite ordinary. There is a speaker grille, a camera and sensors at the top of the display, and below it the sensor covers three standard buttons “Menu”, “Home” and “Back”, which, unfortunately, are not backlit.

The edges of the smartphone are plastic, dark blue. At the top end there are 3.5" headphone jacks and micro-USB.

On the right are the hardware keys for adjusting the volume and turning on the mobile phone. The latter is recessed into a small niche, and it is not always convenient to feel it with your fingers.

On the left side there is an external speaker (it had to be moved somewhere, since the back cover is under glass), as well as a slot for SIM cards. It is secured simply lousily, and dangles all the time, producing a nasty crackling sound, audible, however, only in a quiet environment.

At the bottom you can only find a small microphone hole.

The back cover is non-removable, and, as already mentioned above, is made entirely of tempered glass. In the upper left corner there is a peephole for the main camera and a flash LED (it is these that cause many people to comment that the model is similar to the iPhone). The manufacturer's logo, as we have already mentioned, reacts to some events with a beautiful glow.

The smartphone was assembled well, if not for the aforementioned problem with the SIM card tray. But it clearly lacks ideal rigidity. The model bends and creaks when applying medium effort. Most mobile phones from this manufacturer have more trustworthy mechanical reliability, but with the Lenovo S850 the engineers overlooked something somewhere.

Screen

The 5-inch IPS display of the Lenovo S850 review can also be called typical. It has the usual resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels for its class and the same typical viewing angles, brightness and color rendition. The picture overall looks good for a smartphone of this price. The brightness reserve should be enough to work on a sunny day.

The touchscreen here is responsive and works without problems. The sensor supports 5 clicks simultaneously. Overall, we liked this screen and it suits the device quite well.

Iron

The MTK6582 processor with 1 GB of RAM is usually installed in models where it is necessary to provide good performance while saving on price. However, if you are not a player of the latest games for mobile phones, this platform will be quite enough for you.

The Lenovo S850 interface is fast, but without the instantaneous response inherent in top models. Programs launch without long delays, videos run, and the browser does not lag when opening more than 2-3 pages. What more could you want from a smartphone in this class?

In the Antutu benchmark test, the hero of our review scored 19230 points. Test results in 3D Mark Ice Storm Extreme showed 2079 points. During testing, the smartphone warmed up noticeably, but not much.

16 GB of onboard memory (12 GB available to the user) seems sufficient for an undemanding user. But it will not be possible to expand it; there is no slot for micro-SD cards in this smartphone.

Other options

The sound in the Lenovo S850 is typically “Lenovo”, with average volume and the same clarity of sound. Headphones don't improve the situation much.

There are no complaints about the Wi-Fi module; it works as it should. The quality of signal reception is at the level of other devices.

The GPS module also pleased with its stable operation. It took off for about a minute, and determined the location quite confidently.

Camera

The Lenovo S850 has cameras with matrix sizes of 5 and 13 megapixels, which is (we use this word again) a typical indicator for this price and class. The camera interface is standard for the manufacturer; it’s easy to find both the “embellishments” that some users like to indulge in and settings. allowing to slightly improve the quality of the resulting image.

The front camera has fairly average picture quality, but its capabilities will be quite sufficient for a video call. The main camera is much more interesting in terms of photos and videos. If you are not particularly demanding of photographs and watch them mainly on the monitor screen, it is quite possible to buy the Lenovo S850, including as a replacement for a budget digital point-and-shoot camera. It's nice that cameras in middle-class models have evolved to quite decent devices.

Flash power is average. You can focus when shooting video by simply “tapping” on the desired place on the smartphone screen. The video is available in 1920 x 1080 pixel quality.

Description based on Android4.4 Lenovo firmware S850 can also be started with the word "typical". We are familiar with Lenovo Launcher from other company devices, and we like this shell. There is no main menu for applications that are placed on desktops. But for convenience, you can sort similar applications into folders. In the settings there is a “Special” tab, replete with proprietary features of varying degrees of usefulness. For example, here you can set up a screen lock by shaking, automatic response when you bring the device to your ear, etc.

The firmware contains a number of useful pre-installed programs, such as a comprehensive Security protection package, cloud services archiving, a program for transferring files between smartphones, etc. There is a program for drivers with large on-screen buttons and the ability to voice call a contact.

Battery

The Lenovo S850 battery has a capacity of 2150 mAh, and it is barely enough to keep the mobile phone alive for at least a working day. Of course, we are talking about full use, when the screen is constantly on, tests are running, GPS and Wi-Fi are working. Most likely, to avoid problems, the user will have to charge this model every evening.

In the Antutu battery test, our subject scored not the worst 5049 points, which is a normal indicator for this platform, although it rather indicates the artificiality of the results of any synthetic tests. As we said above, under intense load the Lenovo S850 discharged quite quickly. The battery cannot be replaced as the back cover is not removable.

It’s nice to see how Lenovo improves the design of its devices year after year, and even ordinary inexpensive models from this manufacturer are increasingly not just functional, but also beautiful, which, in turn, increases their chances of selling. As for Lenovo S850, this smartphone is distinguished primarily by glass panels covering the device on both sides. It looks stylish, especially when combined with the illuminated logo on the back cover, and can attract additional buyers to the model. Otherwise, this is an ordinary average model, not without its shortcomings. Among them are imperfect build quality (although you can’t call it bad), the inability to expand memory, and a non-removable battery with unrecord-breaking battery life.

In addition to what we have already mentioned, the Lenovo S850 has comparable price competitors, high-performance, which has received excellent reviews, and has excellent autonomy, and many other branded and unknown models from China with more advanced technical parameters, but without any zest in design. And the buyer himself in each individual case will have to decide what is more important to him. Those users who care about their image will prefer to buy the Lenovo S850, rather than tech geeks chasing performance. Perhaps the Lenovo S850 will also appeal to girls who are greedy for bright and shiny gadgets (especially since the model, in addition to the dark one, is available in red and white colors).

Only one thing can be said for sure - the Lenovo S850 will not have an easy fate on the market, but this smartphone does not deserve failure either.

Controversial in all matters, the Lenovo S850 pleases more than it disappoints, but this line changes from one extreme to the other. In general, the phone is budget, but it is built with high quality and is equipped with a 4-core processor that copes with its purpose. Another thing is 1 GB of RAM; you must admit, this is not enough for the 21st century, although the OS works quickly and stably. Also, there are two cameras on board - 13 megapixel and 5 megapixel, and the front one takes good pictures, but only in bright light. Now let's talk about the bad. The battery discharges quickly, this happens in about 24 hours, with light use, if you play games, then even faster. A large number of negative reviews about the microphone and in fact the Lenovo S850 microphone is far from the best; the interlocutor will hear you through interference. Regarding the matrix, we can say that it is not bad at all and is equipped with a bright color scheme. If you discard most prejudices, then you can completely use it, especially considering the declared cost from the manufacturer, which is more than affordable.
