We got acquainted with Apple hardware iPad Pro. We found out that this is the most productive tablet based on an ARM processor, equipped with a magnificent screen and a capacious battery. But we also said that due to its size, the iPad Pro suggests different use cases than the iPad Air. In the second part of the article, we will analyze these scenarios in detail using the example of specific applications, and also examine branded accessories for the iPad Pro - the Apple Pencil stylus, case and cover.

Accessories

At the presentation of the iPad Pro, along with the tablet itself, two very interesting accessories were presented: the Apple Pencil stylus and the Smart Keyboard cover. In the US, they went on sale simultaneously with the iPad Pro itself, but in our country the Apple Pencil was delayed by about a week and a half, and the Smart Keyboard cover still hasn’t arrived (and it definitely won’t arrive until the New Year).

For this reason, we were only able to briefly get acquainted with the Smart Keyboard. In general, this is a hybrid of a cover and a keyboard, that is, it can be closed so that it completely covers the screen, like a cover, or you can open it and install the iPad Pro on it at an angle - so that it looks like an open laptop. It is for connecting the keyboard on the tablet that there are contacts on the left side.

There is one more position: in it the keyboard part is at the back, holding the tablet installed at an angle convenient for watching videos.

Thus, the Smart Keyboard completely replaces the regular cover, although with it the tablet still becomes a little thicker. As for the comfort of the keys themselves, in the few minutes that we held the Smart Keyboard in our hands, the key stroke seemed very comfortable to us, as did the covering material. However, the keys themselves are still slightly smaller than standard laptop ones, although the distance between them is quite sufficient, reducing the likelihood of hitting an adjacent key.

Let us repeat that the Smart Keyboard has not yet gone on sale, but any Bluetooth keyboard, including the Magic Keyboard, can be used as an external keyboard with the iPad Pro. In addition, there are already similar Smart Keyboard solutions from third-party manufacturers (for example, Logitech).

If you still want a branded accessory, then you can take a regular cover (without a keyboard). It costs about 5,000 rubles and protects the device’s screen, unlocks it when opened, and also allows you to conveniently place the tablet on the table at different angles.

The cover is only available in two colors - dark gray and white. The same colors are also available for silicone case. It costs more - almost 6,600 rubles.

The case can be used in conjunction with the cover, as in the photo below. However, you must be prepared for the fact that in this version the device will become significantly more bulky and will no longer be perceived as thin.

However, of all the branded accessories, the most interesting is, of course, the Apple Pencil. And we will focus on it.

The news that Apple would release a stylus was received ambiguously by the company's fans: everyone remembered how Steve Jobs disliked styluses and how he mocked them at the presentation of the first iPhone. However, unlike the iPhone and previous iPads, the new iPad Pro is positioned as a professional device, including one intended for designers, artists, etc. And here you can’t do without a stylus.

The stylus is sold separately, for 7,790 rubles. Not cheap? Yes indeed. However, of all the tablet styluses that we have encountered (we are not taking professional Wacom tablets now), this is the most convenient. Therefore, it deserves consideration as a separate product (which, in fact, it is).

The stylus is packaged in a white oblong box, inside of which, in addition to it, there are information leaflets and a spare cap and tip.

The stylus itself is quite thin (maybe a little thicker than a regular ballpoint pen), its body is made of white glossy plastic with the exception of the tip of the rod, the rim around the base of the cap and the plug for connecting to the iPad. The plastic feels quite pleasant to the touch, holding the stylus in your hand is comfortable.

If we open the cap, we will find a Lightning plug underneath. This plug is needed to connect the stylus to the iPad Pro. Just insert the stylus into the Lightning connector on the iPad Pro and it starts charging (there is a battery inside the stylus). Moreover, in order to be able to work for several hours, it is enough to keep the stylus connected to the iPad for only half a minute.

In addition to recharging, connecting the stylus to the iPad Pro is necessary for them to become friends. That is, when you take out the stylus you just bought, you need to insert it into the iPad Pro to establish a connection between them.

At the other end of the stylus there is a metal rod covered with a plastic tip. And here we come to very important things. The fact is that the stylus recognizes not only the pressure applied, but also the angle of contact with the tablet. In addition to this, you can hold it not only near the shaft, as we usually hold a pen, but also closer to the cap, like a pencil when shading. This is a valuable moment for artists.

Let's give a few examples. For simplicity and clarity, all of them will be done in “Notes” - a pre-installed application that, starting with iOS 9, has also received drawing capabilities.

This is just handwritten text. Yes, the author has clumsy handwriting. But believe me, it’s no better with a regular ballpoint or gel pen :) In fact, writing by hand with using Apple Pencil is quite convenient - there is almost no delay between the stylus touching the screen and the appearance of a line (according to at least, it is not felt). The only not very pleasant feeling is the rather “slippery” surface of the glass. That is, there is no characteristic “grip” as in the case of ordinary paper. But, I repeat, this does not cause severe discomfort, and, most importantly, even despite this feeling of sliding, you still manage to write in almost the same handwriting as on paper (although at first it is unusual, and sometimes you have to make some efforts to make the letters turned out to be readable).

Another example: pencil shading. Instead of a tool that imitates a pen, we chose a “pencil”, held the stylus higher and made these wide translucent lines with a wide brush gesture. And then, taking the pencil closer to the lead and working with smaller gestures, the usual thin lines were drawn on top.

Now we take a “felt-tip pen” and first draw a regular line, and then make a very small angle between the stylus and the screen, thickening the line.

This entire line was drawn without lifting the stylus from the screen, it is continuous.

Despite its convenience and clarity in terms of demonstrating new features, Notes, of course, is not a professional tool. But the iPad Pro already has apps that artists, illustrators, and designers can use. We will talk about them in the next part of the article.

iPad Pro Apps

So, we smoothly moved on to the topic of applications for the iPad Pro. Let us immediately note two points. First of all, all applications that worked fine on other iPads will work correctly on the iPad Pro. That is, application creators do not have to optimize them in any way. During the time we used the iPad Pro (several weeks), we were not able to find a single application that crashed or was somehow displayed incorrectly. However, since the screen area of the iPad Pro is much larger than that of the iPad Air, the question arises of changing the application interface so that the elements do not look too large and auxiliary icons, menus, etc. do not take up so much space from the main content. And this is still the problem (this is the second point that is worth considering). For some reason, even the largest developers have not yet made a move and optimized the interface for the iPad Pro. As a result, for example, extremely inconvenient Facebook and VKontakte clients, terrible YouTube, etc. That is, all this is tolerable, but you get less pleasure from using them. So, when buying an iPad Pro, be prepared for the fact that many familiar applications will not look as good as you would like. However, there will be no ladders or other artifacts that could be observed with increased resolution. What's more, Apple has achieved perfect font scaling, meaning text always looks smooth even if the app isn't optimized for the iPad Pro.

In this section of the article, we will give examples of successful applications that not only look good on the iPad Pro screen, but also allow you to unleash its potential and see the benefits of a large screen.

Procreate and Adobe Sketch

Perhaps the most powerful drawing package on the iPad Pro is Procreate. The application is paid, but its capabilities are very wide. Even working with layers is supported.

Less functional, but free and very convenient application for sketches - .

We will not talk in detail about these applications and will give the floor to a professional 2D illustrator Yuri 'Yarrow' Vishnyakov, whom we invited to our studio, gave him an iPad Pro with an Apple Pencil stylus and asked him to work in Adobe Sketch and Procreate. His impressions, the work process itself and the final result are on video!

However, the iPad Pro will be of interest not only to those who create, but also to those who study art or talk about it. Here are just two examples that impressed us the most.

Second Canvas Museo del Prado

Last year, Madrid's Prado Museum of Fine Arts released the Second Canvas app, which featured selected masterpieces from the museum's collection (paintings by Durer, Leonardo, Bosch, etc.). The main difference between this application and many other collections of painting reproductions (of which there are many in the App Store) is that all the paintings here were presented in high resolution.

The application looks great on a regular iPad, but there you have to choose: either you see only a fragment of the image (but in all the details), or the whole picture (but without details). On iPad Pro, you can open an image full screen and see plenty of detail without sacrificing the overall experience.

Artsy

An excellent free app for connoisseurs contemporary art- . This is a constantly updated catalog of auctions, with the help of which collectors can place bids or request information about paintings of interest, and art lovers of the 20th–21st centuries can track the works of their favorite artists from small galleries and private collections (that is, something that you simply cannot find on the Internet , because these are little-known things).

Like the Prado Museum app, Artsy allows you to see paintings in a fairly good resolution, significantly exceeding the resolution of the iPad Air. Therefore, the iPad Pro will be the most convenient and enjoyable way to explore the Artsy catalog and immerse yourself in the world of contemporary art.

In general, if you love fine art or, moreover, work in a field related to it (for example, you give lectures about art, are engaged in dealer activities, are related to galleries, etc.), then the iPad Pro will be the most convenient for you tool. In fact, this is the first mobile tablet, approaching the size of an A4 sheet, that is, the most common format among art albums.

Solar Walk 2

Of course, not only painting-related applications benefit from increased screen size, but also any application in which visual material plays a dominant role (provided that this material is represented in the application itself in sufficient quantities). high resolution). For example, in Complete Anatomy, medical students will be able to most clearly familiarize themselves with the structure of the human body (including individual muscles, bones, etc.), and those who study astronomy or are simply interested in space will certainly be delighted with Solar Walk 2.

Here we can look at 3D models of cosmic bodies (planets, stars, comets, etc.), created based on real photographs, and also learn all sorts of details about them.

Of course, you need to understand that all of the listed applications work perfectly on the iPad Air. But it is on the iPad Pro that they look optimal and allow you to study the content presented in them with maximum convenience and pleasure.

To complete the conversation about applications, we note that the advantages of the iPad Pro are obvious in the regular Microsoft Office- especially in Excel, where you can see a lot more data on one screen, but also in Word. In addition, the dual-window mode, which appeared in iOS 9, is the most reasonable and useful on the iPad Pro (we can assume that few people used it on previous iPads).

Games

The situation with games is somewhat less clear. It seems that this is an area that, at first glance, should also clearly benefit from a larger screen, but in practice, not everything turns out to be so simple.

Let's start with the most obvious examples. Of course they look great on the iPad Pro Board games: chess, backgammon, checkers, solitaire. This is especially valuable if you want to play the game with someone together (i.e., you use the tablet simply as a convenient replacement for traditional equipment). So, the iPad Air was still too small compared to a regular chessboard to be considered in such a role. The iPad Pro is a different matter.

The second genre, which is also definitely more convenient and beautiful on the iPad Pro, is Tower Defense. Since the basis of this genre is small turrets, guns and the like, when the display size increases, all this becomes more visual, more expressive, and, ultimately, easier to control. Good example- Anomaly Defenders.

Do you have a small child? Do you play games with him on your tablet? Then the iPad Pro is also worth a closer look. For example, there is an excellent project Botanicula, which children are delighted with (and many adults too).

You can play it with your child, and for such a pastime the iPad Pro is the optimal size, while the iPad Air is too small. All sorts of small objects, as in the mentioned game (there are a lot of spiderbugs, boogers and other even not immediately noticeable elements), are visible better on the iPad Pro, and since they are larger, the eyes get less tired.

In the puzzle genre, the iPad Pro is generally very comfortable to use. But there is not always a noticeable difference with the iPad Air. For example, in Botanicula - there is, in Room Three, where there are a lot of details (all sorts of gears, bolts, levers, etc.) - also, in Monument Valley on the iPad Pro you can see the entire structure, which is also wonderful. But in Shadowmatic - does it matter whether you rotate an object on a larger or smaller screen? Although the iPad Pro has no shortcomings here either.

We have listed several game genres. Have you noticed what they all have in common? The fact that during the game process the tablet lies on your table or on your lap. You don't have to hold it in your hands; these games don't use an accelerometer or gyroscope. It’s much more difficult with those games where these hardware elements are used, and, therefore, the tablet must be kept suspended. Let's say with racing.

Specifically in the case of the iPad Pro, this will be useful, for example, when using professional applications that are only available on Mac. For example, you can open a full-fledged Adobe Photoshop via your Mac. But here you should immediately be prepared for several problems. To begin with, for some reason the picture on the iPad Pro is not clear enough, it’s cloudy - this can be clearly seen in the fragments of two screenshots. The first screenshot is a website opened in Safari on a Mac (where the screenshot was taken), and the second is the same page, but opened through an iPad Pro remotely connected to a Mac. Originals are available by clicking.

Apparently, the application does not yet use the large resolution of the iPad Pro (or does not use it quite as it should). But, according to company representatives, the developers are aware of this and are working to solve the problem.

The second problem with Parallels Access is its lack of stability and smoothness. But this is already a common problem, which concerns not only the iPad Pro. Of course, the iPad Pro solves another important problem: those elements of Mac applications that looked too small on the iPad Air look almost the same here as on the 13-inch MacBook Pro or MacBook Air. But it is probably premature to expect that you will run Adobe Photoshop on a Mac and have a full-fledged working tool on your iPad Pro, although no one is stopping you from experimenting in this direction.

conclusions

Of course, it is impossible to cover at least most categories of applications within the framework of one article. It is also impossible to give recommendations for all professions and specialties. That is, this is not a complete guide, but rather highlights and specific examples that are intended to show you the possible advantages and disadvantages of the iPad Pro. And only by supplementing this review with reflections on your forms of working with the tablet, you will be able to conclude whether you need an iPad Pro and why.

If we briefly summarize the above, we get the following picture: for artists/illustrators/designers, the iPad Pro with the Apple Pencil stylus is excellent mobile platform, but not the main working tool; for those who are interested in the fine arts as a consumer rather than a creator - yes, this is a great gadget; For gamers, this is a good option only if they like certain gaming genres that do not require holding the tablet up.

In terms of hardware, this is an excellent device, but when buying it, you must clearly understand why you need such a large tablet. If you don't know which option to prefer - iPad Air 2 or iPad Pro, take the iPad Air. It is more versatile, more mobile and often more convenient even when using it at home (not to mention going out with it anywhere). If you have a clear understanding of exactly how you will use the iPad Pro and why you need the largest possible screen size, then it’s a different matter.

That is, the iPad Pro must be bought meaningfully, consciously. And this is its fundamental difference from the usual iPad, which most people purchased according to the principle “this one has it, this one has it, but I don’t have it yet” or “let me try to see what kind of miracle this is.” Steve Jobs was right: 10 inches is truly the optimal size from the point of view of such consumer use. And you don't need a stylus for this either. But with the iPad Pro, Apple is moving into different territory, trying to attract professionals and people who make informed choices and use the tablet as a tool to solve specific problems (not necessarily professional, but still clearly defined).

It's great that Apple has made iPad apps that aren't optimized for the iPad Pro run very smoothly and correctly. The fonts worked especially well - the text always looks perfect (with the exception of virtualization tools, of course). But Apple has not yet managed to encourage developers to refine the application interface specifically to the size of the iPad Pro screen, and this is important for the further development of this direction, which undoubtedly will happen.

You can argue for a long time whether Apple’s current strategy is wrong or not, recall numerous violations of Jobs’ covenants, etc. But with all the noted shortcomings and features, the iPad Pro as such was a great success. One can hardly argue with this. And now it is not only up to Apple whether new formats for using tablets will appear and become widespread, focused specifically on devices with big screen. Much here will be determined by the steps of competitors (surely they will try to release something similar to the iPad Pro - but how successfully and how soon?), developers, iPad sales Pro. However, Apple would not be Apple if it had not made bold, controversial steps - and here Jobs’s former comrades very clearly follow the line he outlined: not to enter an already existing territory, but to create their own sphere, form a new market, new user requests. Will it work out or not? Let's see. But what we would definitely like to hope for is that the iPad Pro will shake up the swamp that the tablet market has become, and we will see many more new and interesting things.

To conclude, we offer you our video review, where we share our main impressions of the iPad Pro and show some of the applications mentioned in the article.

P.S. For the excellent combination appearance and hardware features, we give the iPad Pro our editorial Original Design Award:

01.

Adobe's drawing app for iPad takes you straight to the top of the class

  • Requirements: iOS 11.0 or later

As designers, you'll be well aware of the talent offered in Adobe Illustrator CC, but you may not be familiar with Illustrator Attract. Illustrator Draw is more than just a vector digital sketchbook - this drawing app for your iPad has all the popular and most useful features Ai, wrapped in a simple user interface designed to quickly generate ideas and concepts while you're on

Features include simple vector drawing tools with separate drawing and photography layers, and the ability to sync with Creative Cloud. With this feature, you can also download Adobe Illustrator-compatible files and work with them on iPad using your Apple Pencil.

The application allows you to draw perfectly straight lines and geometric shapes, rename layers and use shapes from Adobe Capture CC. Improved perspective grid also means you can display shapes in the perspective plane. All told, this is an essential app for iPad-owning Ai users.

03. Autodesk SketchBook

Autodesk 3D specialists have created an application for drawing in Sketchbook

  • Requirements: iOS 10.0 or later
  • Price: For free

Autodesk may be known mainly for pro-spec 3D applications like 3ds Max and Maya, but in Sketchbook it has a powerful sketching app with an incredibly natural drawing experience - something that excels in exploitation the latest technology ProMotion from the iPad Pro and, of course, the Apple Pencil.

With 170 custom brushes, full PSD layer and blending support, and a toggle predictive stroke that transforms your drawn lines and shapes into crisp, precise shapes, Sketchbook is probably the best free drawing app out there—and incredibly, it doesn't cost a penny or in-app purchases.

04. Procreate

Procreate is the king of natural media apps on the iPad

  • Requirements: iOS 11.1 or later
  • Price:$9.99 / £9.99

It's the king of natural media apps on the iPad, and it's completely transformed with the addition of Pencil. Sure, you can use your finger along with it, a simple stylus, or even one of the increasingly complex and expensive third-party styluses from the likes of Adonit, but none of them give you the fluidity and similar experience that the Apple Pencil does.

This is partly because of the Pencil's thin tip, partly because of the low latency and double-speed sampling rate, and partly because finger peeling is almost flawless. But all that technical stuff just fades into the background when you're faced with the joy of sketching with a 6B pencil, turning it flat to block in large areas of shadow or dropping colors.

The last major release was Procreate 4, which featured a major technology overhaul as well as many improvements including the introduction of wet paint and an intuitive, redesigned menu. Read our full review Procreate 4.

05.

  • Requirements: iOS 10.3 or later
  • Price:$19.99 / £19.99

Another one from the series, Affinity Photo is a fantastic alternative to Photoshop on Mac computers and Windows with a built-in set of tools, amazing performance and a one-time price instead of subscription fee, as well as her iPad versions, used by Apple to show off the iPad Pro and Pencil, is equally impressive.

Although it is compatible with more early models iPad, when you pair it with iPad Pro and Pencil, Affinity Photo really comes to life. Already designed to make the most of the iPad's hardware and touch features, on the iPad Pro it's also built to take full advantage of the sensitivity and angle of the Pencil.

It's built for a professional workflow with support for raw and PSD files, as well as full cross-platform performance and file compatibility in case you feel the need to add some ultimate polish to your desktop. But the thing is, you probably won't need it.

05. Adobe Comp CC
