All buttons are located so that the user will not have dislocated fingers or calluses from constantly fumbling for the carefully disguised lock key (which can “boast” of HTC One). Even the slot for the S Pen stylus is located in such a way that the stylus is easy to reach with your right hand if you hold the tablet in your left. In essence, this is good design: it is not visible, but at the same time it makes the device as pleasant to use as possible.

I personally had no complaints about the build quality of the Galaxy Note 8.0 test unit.

Screen

The Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 uses an 8-inch PLS matrix with a resolution of 1280x800 (16:10 aspect ratio). This screen has wide viewing angles, but its only major drawback is the narrow color gamut, which falls short of the standard sRGB gamut (which makes colors look less saturated than they should). At the same time, the uniformity of gradients and stability of color temperature are very good. The measured value of maximum brightness is 366 cd/m2, contrast is 480:1.

Software and functionality

By Samsung functionality Galaxy Note 8.0 is very similar to Note 10.1, except for the fact that it uses the operating system Android system 4.1.2 and not a tablet, but a smartphone version TouchWiz skins, for which portrait screen orientation is the main one. If in Note 10.1 switching between two programs located on the screen occurred with delays, then in Note 8.0 everything is fine; working with two applications at the same time can be called really comfortable.

In other words, the hardware of this tablet is completely similar to the Galaxy Note II and shows exactly the same results in benchmarks.

Time battery life The Galaxy Note 8.0 is approximately the same as other compact tablets - with occasional use, you can expect 4-6 days of battery life; with heavy use, the device lasts for a couple of days. In HD video playback mode at half screen brightness, the Note 8.0 lasted 8 hours - not the best result, but quite decent.

Bottom line

In my opinion, Galaxy Note 8.0 can be called the “golden mean” in the Galaxy Note line: after all, it has a much larger screen than even the largest phone, but at the same time it is much more portable than full-size (10-inch) tablets, which allows comfortably hold it with one hand while taking notes with the other. Screen

Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 has a standard LCD display. The South Korean company abandoned the use of AMOLED displays, which were installed only on the Galaxy Tab 7.7.

Now let's move on to the video capabilities. Touch focusing is available during recording, after which it is possible to return to continuous autofocus.

Video with HD resolution is recorded in MP4 format with a bitrate of 12 Mbps, frame rate 30 per second, audio is captured with a bitrate of 128 Mbps and a sampling rate of 48 kHz.

The video quality was not impressive. It is quite average: there is not enough detail, colors do not always look natural even in well-lit rooms.

The tablet uses a non-removable lithium ion battery with a capacity of 4600 mAh, which, according to the manufacturer, should be enough for 120 hours of listening to music and 8 hours of working with multimedia content.

Everything from the color, design elements, location and design of the controls is borrowed from the smartphone. And perhaps the only thing that distinguishes these two devices is the absence of a speaker grill next to the front camera on the tablet.

On the front panel you will find two touch navigation buttons and a mechanical Home button, exactly the same ones we are used to seeing on almost all Android smartphones. But this solution, which works very well on phones, turns out to be completely inconvenient on a tablet, especially when you use it in landscape mode.

The tablet body is made of white plastic, with a silver insert at the ends. On the right side (if you hold the tablet in your hands like a phone) you will find the power button, volume rocker and infrared port. There is a card slot on the left side MicroSD memory, hidden behind a plastic plug. The top end is decorated with a headphone jack, and on the bottom we will find two tiny holes that house the stereo speaker grilles and the MicroUSB port (Yesss! – Samsung finally heard our prayers).

The S-Pen slot is located in the lower right corner of the case.

As mentioned, the pen design has changed. It is larger than the Note and Note II pen and is comparable in size to the Note 10.1 pen. But it will be more comfortable to hold, especially for those with large fingers, than the pen from a ten-inch tablet. The control button is located quite conveniently, within reach of the index finger. It's also the first S-Pen to work with touch buttons, which is a pretty useful and convenient feature.

On the opposite side of the screen you will find a 1.3-megapixel camera lens and a proximity sensor that stand out against a white background, which look very unusual given the absence of a speaker.

On the back of the tablet, you'll find a 5-megapixel camera lens rising slightly above the snowy white landscape. The Galaxy Note 8.0 does not have an LED flash.

The build quality is at a fairly high level, which is traditional for Samsung. For those who were disappointed by the flimsy appearance Note case 10.1, you'll be pleased to hear that the Note 8.0 feels noticeably more secure in your hands.

Surprisingly, this tablet is quite comfortable to hold in your hands and all the elements are adjusted very precisely, but in general it does not look as solid as Nexus tablet 7 and even more so, in this regard it is not comparable with its main competitor - Apple iPad mini.

Screen

Currently, there are quite a few fans of devices with an eight-inch screen, but this is rather because everyone is already accustomed to the fact that a compact tablet should have a screen measuring 7 inches diagonally. Although, after a short interaction with such devices, you understand that they not only have the right to life, but are also often more convenient than tablets with a 10-inch screen, or their smaller seven-inch colleagues.

Some will be disappointed by the tablet's screen resolution, which is 1280 x 800 pixels and looks rather modest compared to Samsung screens Nexus 10, Galaxy S4 and other modern tablets.

Of course, I would like a tablet priced at $400 to have a screen larger than high resolution, but do not forget that it is equipped with a Wacom active digitizer, which provides support for working with a digital pen.

All in all, Galaxy screen Note 8.0, if not excellent, is very good - it has large viewing angles, excellent color rendition and a high level of brightness. Even the screen coating matches perfectly with the stylus tip, which glides across the screen without encountering the slightest resistance.

The tablet's speakers themselves sound loud enough, without any distortion. Naturally, it would be ridiculous to expect deep bass from tiny speakers, but for mobile device, the sound of the Galaxy Note 8.0 is at a very acceptable level.

Camera

Personally, I think that using a tablet as a camera or video camera is very inconvenient and looks somewhat comical from the outside. A tablet with a five-megapixel camera without an LED flash is not suitable for the role of a portable camera, even less so.

Not only does the Galaxy Note 8.0's camera have a fairly low resolution, but it also doesn't do its job well in low ambient light levels.
