Having watched quite a lot of stuff various information, I have identified the following contenders:
- ES Explorer, I’ve been living with him for about three years, perhaps. In fact, I've never had anything else. Let's try to find an alternative;
- ASTRO File Manager . Sony loves him very much for some reason, at least, almost all the phones and firmware from this company I tried had this thing pre-installed. And exactly until the moment the phone fell into my hands - at that very moment this same manager was mercilessly sawed out. Well, it’s time to figure it out - maybe it’s all in vain?
- File Manager- that’s how she simply called her brainchild Cheetah Mobile. I don’t love this company with every fiber, but how can you love them when the number of lines of advertising in applications exceeds the number of functions of the application. And everything sparkles and shimmers - the hand automatically starts to swing, but the brain understands - it’s a pity for the phone... But 50 million downloads - such a ton of people can’t be wrong?!
- Total Commander- the only reason I don’t know him is that in 2012 he was completely unintelligible and an ES donkey on the phone. But on the PC - only it, and for about 10-15 years already. If it's even roughly functional, it's a real candidate! Although it’s hard to imagine two panels on five inches...
- X-plore File Manager- I didn’t even know about its existence on Android! Is it true. I became acquainted with the creation of “Lonely Cat” on the Symbian Nokia 7610 back in 2006 - there were basically no worthy analogues! But even then I remember that I didn’t like the colors at all, and I wasn’t the only one - there were a dozen mods with normal color palette;
- Root Explorer. This is what is recommended on all forums for editing system resources. It was this one that I always avoided for unknown reasons. He is the only one paid application(it’s good that it’s a little more than 100 rubles, otherwise it would have remained unknown). There is, however, a free version of it, but it is simply impossible to use - only a number of very basic functions and that’s all;
- File Explorer- Another one. Maybe you should join the namers? Shall we come up with names for them? Recognition is borderline zero. It would be nice if it was a basement developer, but no - the whole NextApp, Inc.! This is their famous creation - System Panel. Well, there’s a tweaker there, an optimizer. I went through it, I remember... Now I’ve reached the browser;
- Solid Explorer. To be honest, I’ve never heard of him at all - I read it in the comments. I don't know the developer either. There will be an opening, so to speak. But let's see, maybe the closure is the other way around.
So I introduced everyone. Now I want to draw your attention to my criteria (they, of course, will differ from yours - each has their own felt-tip pen, but I will try to consider all the functionality as fully as possible):

As the play progresses, I will indicate advantages or disadvantages, but not everywhere, but only where I was really “hooked”, and if everything about the application is good or bad, but without unique features, I won’t come up with anything. Well, let's get started, shall we?
Program interface
ES Explorer. After launch, a window opens with icons of folders and files in the form of icons. I don’t like it that way - I want a list. Therefore, the first thing we try to do is change, besides, there is a “View” icon at the bottom.

By the way, at the top, if you look closely, you can see a set of icons indicating open tabs; you can move between them by swiping, or you can try to get to the desired icon - this is not an easy task, frankly speaking.

The remaining categories of the home page are just as clear; in fact, it is a collection of all the main links to the main resources. It may be convenient, but I don’t use it - it seems to me that this is an absolutely useless thing.
Above the viewing window there is a two-level navigation panel - with one tap you can move up one level. If you tap on the current folder (with a triangle-arrow), you will get into the navigation history.
Let me note that this is a very convenient thing! So, at the very top here are the main system storages, and below are the folders where we were and the files that we opened.
And if you swipe to the left from the very edge, a window will open with open windows and the clipboard - here you can easily go to the desired tab or close any of them. The same menu can be called up using the "Windows" icon on the action bar.
Let's go back to the bottom panel. Let's skip the already familiar "View" button. "Update" - no comments. "Search" - in the same place as "Create". There’s nothing to comment on - we create a folder or file and that’s it.
Swiping from the left edge or the button with three lines at the top will open the side menu. In general, it almost completely copies what has already been seen." Home page": all the same bookmarks, only in profile. And with a small addition.
The familiar “Bookmarks” gives us the opportunity to create any custom tags: folders, files, Internet pages. Yes, yes, exactly Internet pages, and they open in the built-in Internet browser. I can’t say that it is at all remarkable - the most ordinary, without hyphenation or any tricks.
The only point is good page layout, that's all. To view the weather and check mail, you don’t need anything else, and for full surfing from the context menu, you can transfer the page to your favorite application at any time.
Bookmarking any local object is very simple - just make a long tap and select “Add to bookmarks” in the “More” menu.
You can, of course, do it through the plus sign from the bookmarks menu, but this is a method for those who have a lot of time and inspiration...
Again we see storage and libraries. And here's a little addition: the "Funds" tab.
In general, the means are full of interesting things. So, in a seemingly ordinary download manager, you can enter the address of a file on the Internet and download the file! I think that the idea is strange, even at the conceptual level, but he can simply intercept downloads perfectly.
The task manager will prompt us to download and install the appropriate program. I installed it as a regular optimizer without any special features. But the music player is nothing at all. There are playlists, shuffle and repeat modes, among other things, you can set a melody for the ringtone and alarm clock.
We’ll leave the “hidden list” for later - we often put things off for later, so let this option be there.
By the way, at the time of writing this line, a notification from File Manager Cheetah Mobile appeared - it offers to free up memory.
For what? Why does the conductor ask this question and even get into my RAM?!
But let's get back to ES. Below is a set of switches:

Well, let's take a quick look at the two icons at the bottom of the panel.
The first is themes, you can download another one with more expressive icons, or you can click directly on the picture - then a settings dialog will open, in which you can select the color of everything.
The second is settings. In the "File Settings" group, you can configure default folders, select an Internet search engine (we remember that Explorer provides full and adequate access using standard tools?) and other little things.
Password settings will allow you to set a password for startup or network access, or for hidden files (we haven’t talked about them yet - we left them for later, and that “later” has not yet come).
Application settings - I don’t know why Explorer can do this, but here you can enable the option to backup applications before deleting them, along with all their data. The function is certainly useful, but not here, not in Explorer - there is special programs it seems.

ASTRO File Manager- Well, should we ever move on to other participants?!
Hooray! Advertising! In general, I am for advertising and never turn it off, although I can, but developers are people too and should eat too, but you can install some filters so that it doesn’t hurt your eyes so much... Let the full screen pop up once every half hour and when launch-release... But I don’t like the brightly caustic banner, but, of course, the principle is the principle - I leave it.
But the design itself is calmly Windows-yellow, with well-drawn folders, above which there is a navigation bar, similar in liberties to ES, but without a history button, which is not encouraging.
In the ellipsis menu, you can select "View Settings". Hello, English-Russian dictionary Google, judging by the content, is called, on the contrary, “View Settings”. The settings, by the way, are concise and convenient.
Below, in the “Manage places” section, you can rename our “places”, using the terminology of the authors.
Next to the menu is a filter button - a waste of space in my humble opinion. Well, how often do you have movies, music, etc. in one folder? I almost never have everything in folders, then why should I display only videos in the “Video” folder? Or documents - they are not there and never were!
Quick navigation is carried out from the side menu - all our repositories are in one list without any structure. When there are few of them, it’s easy, but I have six clouds (or clouds? difficult Russian)...
The search conditions (well, what about the translation) are the same global filters - only files are displayed not only from a specific folder, but also from attachments.
Bookmarks are a good idea. Go to the desired folder and select the appropriate option in the properties.
That's the whole review of the appearance. All you have to do is look in the menu - there are two buttons there - at the bottom of the sidebar.

"Men adj" - this means res copying the file and deleting it. Who can explain why such a terrible reduction had to be made? The function is similar to EZ - backup and deletion, it can be done in batches, but you need a completely different software.
The task manager and using the map are the most common optimization utilities familiar to everyone. I am a categorical opponent of the presence of any things that are not related to the essence of the program in the program itself.
The settings, frankly speaking, are very poor: the already familiar “Manage places”, a display setting similar to the sign you saw, only in a different form, and that’s all.
At the same time, it is impossible to customize the interface, moving between storage spaces is inconvenient, and translation is frankly ridiculous. I’m not finding fault with the lack of additional goodies and tricks - these are more likely the advantages of competitors than the disadvantages of the program, but translation, translation!
File Manager. Chita mobile, hold on - I got there, and I might even find where that crap is hiding that shows unnecessary messages.
The main screen resembles the ES Explorer Home page, only slightly simplified and colored.
There is advertising, but the advertising is correct - it occupies the top line and scrolls along with the list, while nothing is bright or shiny. It’s not surprising, after the amount of advertising that they crammed into CleanMaster, they gained enough experience.
The manager turns out to be two-paneled! But on different screens - a very good concept - on each panel you can open a different folder and move folders between them, in theory.
The view setting is next to the usual ellipsis and does not represent anything special: a simple choice of list/icons (and you get a list with huge icons), and the menu contains sorting.
Navigation is traditional from the side menu. Everything is categorized, not as neat as in ES, but much better than in ASTRO. There are also bookmarks - both for files and folders.
But settings in the ASTRO style are nothing. You can enable root access and choose a dark or light theme. There is nothing to compare or consider here. But everything is convenient and simple - without complications.
Total Commander. The two panels are organized similarly to the previous hero. I don’t know who first came up with such a concept, but the fact that it is convenient is undeniable. But what I don’t understand is the three arrows and two “equals” between the panels. The arrows move to the adjacent panel, and “equal” makes one panel equal to the other (throws it into the same directory). This is, in fact, understandable, but why so many symbols?
The buttons at the top are folder history and bookmarks.
The first - without question, for the second there is only one question - for what? So you need to be able to get creative with creating a bookmark. Only ES went further when it offered to register the path yourself, but there it was in the form of an option for the strong in spirit - I created them simply with a long tap. Here we need, by clicking on the arrows on the side, to select the object and folder (by default - the current folder) in which the bookmark will be reflected (you don’t have to select it - it will be created in the current one) and even select a shortcut (you can from pictures, or you can remove it from which one). some applications). Long way, difficult. Logical, understandable, but not my thing...
The icons below are a pitiful semblance of the functionality of the desktop version:
- highlight. You can select files or folders, you can use a mask (for example - *photo* - all files containing this letter combination, “photo”, for example, will be selected), you can remove the selection or invert it;
- strange button next to it. Here we can send everything selected to the next panel, or we can send it over the air...
- cube - archiving is familiar to everyone, and you can choose the compression level, or you can set a password;
- The last button turns on the root and a panel of additional buttons.
All view settings are in the upper ellipsis. In fact, except full customization appearance, the only useful thing here is switching the mode of two panels: side by side on one window or in adjacent windows.
I didn’t find any quick navigation, although you can add any location to an additional button panel - that’s where we’ll have quick navigation.
For me, it looks like something between ASTRO and Cheetah.
X-plore File Manager- remember everything is called, everything is exactly the same as a decade ago. Only the second panel was added.
The main window is a tree view of all resources. I can’t say that it’s convenient, on the other hand, but my hands remember. Everything is clear - I clicked on the plus sign, the folder expanded, and it was the same in Windows 98. No transitions or navigation are needed.
In the "Display" item you can configure resources to be displayed.
Between the panels there is a menu of tools: basic commands like “copy-paste”. The list scrolls vertically, at the very bottom is the “Journal” button - this is our only way to quickly navigate.
I don’t like the colors as before, but I don’t pretend to be true.
Buttons at the top: panel change (this is the third shift: swipe, button between panels and, third, here), “beer” (to the developer, I mean, absolutely at will, from 45 rubles, inexpensive, it should be noted that they drink beer there ) and settings.
What do we see? Dark/light theme, element size and font choice. Once upon a time, when Quake was only the third (when he was only the first, communicators were not at all popular), it was this item that saved the day when there were cracks, but now the lack of a font is cured in five minutes and the item has lost its former greatness.
There are no dashboards or bookmarks - a browser for those who are used to it on Symbian, but adapted to the current situation. But original!
File Explorer, this time from Next Inc. We are greeted by some kind of children's panel in English dialect. The first thing that catches your eye is the discrepancy in icon style. Moreover, their meaning is somehow different: the “Documents” folder does not find all the documents, as we saw, but opens the stock “Documents” folder, in which I never had anything.
I still don’t understand why the “System” folder is needed if there is “System/root”...
But the media categories are perfectly implemented - when opening, for example, music, we are not just given a list of melodies, but it’s all sorted into meaningful categories:
CleaningTool is a strange file cleaner, and in Add-ons you can buy an extension for network access, download a root access module and download a strange theme - I didn’t, it scared me...
If we suddenly want to climb through the storage facilities, a rather pleasant window with neutral colors awaits us. The view can be changed in the “gear”, where you can also select the sorting type. And between them there are a couple of options headed by “Show hidden” - show hidden files.
In the ellipsis, try the filter - it displays folders and files by letter combination - again, it’s convenient when searching for something and highlighting similar ones.
If you want, create a bookmark. A new approach - now you can create a bookmark only for a folder (file - a shortcut is created on the desktop), and only for the one in which we are located...
But the settings pleased me. So you can choose one of several themes, choose a set of icons, theme color, menu style, enable animation and all sorts of other things.
In addition, you can select the displayed icons of the main window (although you cannot add your own), customize the behavior of the "Back" button (exit by single or double click), in a word - you can turn around anywhere at will...
Under customization there are the "Management" categories, in which we select commands from the file context menu and connect the built-in viewer.
Among the unspecified, but important, I would like to note the ability to select the download folder that will be displayed, and simple text editor settings.
Despite its shortcomings, I liked the application - calm appearance along with extensive settings.
Root Explorer
I don't understand why there is so much hype around this program. No, it’s all good - neat folders, which we can change in the settings, there is also a choice of design (four styles), you can even turn on display in the form of thumbnails, and as a bonus prize you can choose the size of the files.
But it's all good. Navigation is the height of stupidity. So, each source is displayed in a new tab - added a cloud drive - new inset, one more - one more... It’s good when there are no clouds, and no flash drives either. And if there is, then in order to get to, for example, box.net, you need to swipe 5-6 tabs. It's not that difficult, but why?
Shortcuts, navigation bars, and different home pages were invented a long time ago. Yes, at least bookmarks. True, there are bookmarks, but only for objects in local storages.
A very simple explorer with a minimum of settings.
And one more participant - Solid Explorer.
What I liked was the implementation of two-panel advantages: well, there were two panels in other conductors, but what were their advantages, essentially if? And here, for example, you can simply drag a file from one panel to another, and in the menu, moving and copying occurs immediately to the adjacent tab.
Otherwise, it’s a convenient, solid, ordinary file browser.
The window is neat, in calm colors. You can change the type of icons in the menu (by the way, all the buttons on the bottom panel are labeled and we don’t need to navigate using incomprehensible icons) - four types are available, and, of course, sorting is also available.
Navigation occurs through the "Go" button - not an ideal implementation, but undoubtedly convenient. The only thing I didn’t like was the access to the clouds - you need a couple of extra taps, but it’s not critical in principle.
But the settings are implemented very clearly.
In “Appearance” we can change the theme, color scheme and enable the English interface:
The "Files" item also configures the appearance, but more specific parts of it: date and time format, quality of thumbnails, and a few others.
The "Launch" tab will help us set up "start" folders, and in the "Gestures" menu, although this menu should be called "as if gestures", select the file drag and drop mode and enable pinch zooming.

Now let’s compare the convenience of working with files and folders, which is actually what all these explorers were designed for.
ES Explorer. Again there will be a lot of letters - it’s not my fault that the developers shoved in something that couldn’t be squeezed in. To access operations, we need to select a file or folder. You can do this with a long tap.
The most popular copy-paste-delete operations are located on the bottom panel, access to them is instant.
I really like the implementation of copying - after selecting a function, the bottom panel will turn into an insertion panel - go to the desired folder and paste, but this is not the main thing - try to pull out the tab with windows on the right - see? It has turned into a clipboard - this way you can copy different files and paste the ones you need into the right folders.
But the “More” button will open a lot of everything:
This way you can hide the file. At the beginning of the review, we found a folder in the “Hidden” side menu, and in the settings there is a password protection item, so in order for the object to go there, we just need to select this item. But keep in mind, it is hidden only in this explorer - other file browsers will see all hidden things as if nothing had happened.
“Play” and “Add to playable” - add media files to the media player (which is built-in).
Interesting option "Encrypt". So you can put any password on any file or folder, and even encrypt the name! Next to all this goodness there is a button “Open as” - if the file extension is not at all clear to the system, you can manually specify how exactly and try to open the file. The menu is very simple - later we will see a much more “correct” implementation of it.
The built-in viewer understands all media files and text files. It will open them even without the corresponding extensions, only to do this you need to explicitly specify the category.
ASTRO File Manager. A long tap should become a habitual action. But the menu is stripped down - copy and delete. There are a couple more options in the ellipsis and that’s it.
Nothing. Clipboard - no, network transfer - no - just basic copy-paste-rename. And the confirmation of insertion is also merged with advertising.

The developer also didn’t come up with a very sensible idea with the insert button - it’s located at the very top in the form of a small icon - I wouldn’t be against such a move on the Sony Sola 3.7 inches, but, for example, on the Login+ from Megafon with its 5.5 inches - file insertion is accompanied by three interceptions of the phone and an attempt to put the thumb on the twine.
In “More” you can find a very interesting item that is already familiar to us - “Open as...”. Unexpected and pleasant, it seems to compensate for the lack of native listers.
Total Commander. Are we placing bets?

As with ES, we can add media files to the player, send it somewhere and, of course, copy and paste. Copying is easy, but pasting is not so obvious - you need to make a long tap at the top of the panel (where the house and arrow are).
But the main thing is that on your own panel you can create buttons with different actions, including insert commands.
Among the interesting functions, I would like to note the ability to copy a file name - it might come in handy.
An amazing fact - the built-in viewer is 90% not working, for the text editor it showed “not enough memory”, and suggested opening the image in a third-party application.
But video and audio opened, great! Even flac, only with a joke - it didn’t work out from TC, but ES Explorer suggested opening it in the Total list, and everything was fine.
It’s difficult for me to evaluate - it seems to be inferior to the same ES Explorer, but everything you need is there, and all your favorite commands can be assigned to custom buttons.
X-plore File Manager. There are only basic functions and one very interesting, but terribly useless feature.
Basic: copy, delete and rename. You can call them with a long press, or you can pay attention to the panel of buttons between the panels - everything is there.
An interesting point is that copying occurs only to the directory of the adjacent panel, so first of all you need to select the target folder, and only then copy the data from the adjacent tab.
If you open the file properties, you can see the md5 and sha-1 checksums - the hashing algorithms are like this (I stood out so much with a buzzword, the meaning of which I myself don’t fully understand) - in simple language and very, very exaggerated - this is the digital fingerprint of the file that used to check integrity and identity (I won’t use such constructions again, I promise). The average person doesn't indulge in such things.
But these are flowers! I promised a super mega feature, didn’t I? Catch:
Converting the file to HEX code. Lovely! Every morning I wake up and launch a HEX editor instead of cartoons.
But the built-in lister showed its best side - everything I fed it, it gobbled it all up without looking. And mp4, and flac, and all sorts of texts with pictures.
Root Explorer. That's how unremarkable the interface and ease of use seemed to me, the same is true with operations.
A clear copy dialog: select the icon, go to the desired folder and click “Copy here”. The button, by the way, is at the bottom, where it’s easy to reach on any screen.
You can also rename or send, and the simple implementation of “Open with” is excellent - you can select one of the built-in viewer tools, a system category, or any of the installed applications, and the lister works great with all kinds of texts and databases.
And that's it - he can't do everything else. Although, maybe we can also disassemble the apk, but do we need it?
Next File Explorer
The convenient "Open with" menu is completely balanced by the creepy copying. So, to select one file you need a long tap, but to select several - swipe on each of them (or another way - the “select items” icon in the menu), the “copy” button is clear, but then the “Clipboard” icon appears in the upper corner . 1 copied". You can’t just insert it like that - you need to open this very clipboard. Along the way, let’s take another look at our context menu:
Yes, there are files, but you can only insert them all at once. And only from this menu. Or delete from the buffer. It's kind of sad.
But the viewer is very good - all-format, all-music and all-text.
There is nothing more, but there is a residue from the copying procedure - even an excellent lister could not smooth out this “copy-to-clipboard” horror.
Solid Explorer
Firstly, the already familiar tug-of-war, and secondly... but there is nothing remarkable for “secondly”. Convenient copying, but without any noteworthy features, absolutely no “Open with” dialog - everything is beautiful, convenient, the absolute minimum. All these actions are logically located in “Actions”.
Lister is a total parody. Text files - up to 75 KB, photos - good, the rest - nothing.
