Hello! It’s been a long time since there were any useful things in the “Youtube Tips” section. It's time to take off the cobwebs and refresh it with brand new material.

Therefore, in this article we’ll talk about a tool for optimizing and promoting videos on YouTube – the VidiQ browser extension. If you run your own channel on YouTube and do not yet use this extension, I recommend installing it. It has free and paid versions. We will focus on the free functionality, which provides a lot of useful things.

I'll show you how to install and start using the VidiQ extension, and also give an overview of its main functions that I use myself.

You can watch a visual video tutorial:

The extension is available for Google browser Chrome. To install it, go to the address. Click "Download".

You will be taken to the store Chrome extensions and here you need to click on “Install”.

After installation, a pop-up window will appear at the top right - just click on it to activate the application.

Enter your email, name, create a password, accept the terms of the agreement and click on the register button.

The extension is also being introduced into YouTube, and you can use it both within your channel and creative studio, and when analyzing videos on other channels. Exactly in this background I use it.

Important: Similarly, you can install this extension in Yandex.Browser from the Chrome store, since these browsers run on the same engine.

I suggest going through the main ones useful functions VidiQ extensions.

After installing the extension and logging into your YouTube channel, you will see additional options that you have.

In particular, channel statistics icons will appear next to the video download button at the top.

By clicking on the icons, you can see data on the number of video views on your channel for the last 60 minutes, for the last 48 hours and for the last 7 days. The total duration of viewing of all videos on the channel over the last 7 days is also shown in minutes. And the average number of minutes watched.

At the same time, the percentage shows how the indicators have changed in comparison with the previous period. Green numbers and an up arrow indicate an increase in indicators; red numbers and a down arrow indicate a decrease.

Here you will see the number of subscribers to your channel. All this data is collected from YouTube analytics.

Additionally, the statistics tab is also displayed next to the sections on your channel. Default for last month(you can select any period you are interested in) shows the number of video views on the channel, the number of subscribers and published videos.

In this case, you can view data on the chart by day, week or month. For details, simply click on the desired chart.

Now let's take a look into the creative studio and see what options are available when adding and editing videos on a channel.

It is especially useful to use the VidiQ plugin when uploading a new video. For example, using it to collect suitable tags ( keywords) for SEO optimization of the video.

Now in the creative studio there are 2 options for downloading videos from a computer - classic and new (in beta version). The VidiQ options have not yet been fully implemented in the beta version, so we will consider the classic option for downloading videos.

On the Basic Information tab SEO optimization of the video is done. This is where we add the title, description and tags for the video.

To fill out this data, imagine a target user who is looking for a solution to a problem (an answer to their question) that is given in your video. Which search phrases can he use? When optimizing, our task is to use these phrases in the title, description and tags. And also additionally take advantage of the VidiQ plugin.

For example, my video is about using the VidiQ extension to optimize and promote videos on YouTube.

Accordingly, I composed the following heading: “How to use the VidiQ extension to optimize YouTube videos.”

The description was something like this: “From the video you will learn how to use the VidiQ extension to optimize and promote videos on YouTube. I’ll show you how to install VidiQ, review its main functions, and show you how to use it to select tags and do video SEO optimization.”

And I selected several possible key queries: “vidiq extension for YouTube”, “how to optimize a video for YouTube”, “selection of tags for YouTube”.

By the way, when we start entering tags, VidiQ gives hints about what other options can be used. We can immediately add them to our video.

Additionally, the extension puts a score next to popular keywords (how popular it is and what level of competition it has). You need to understand that these are just approximate, internal metrics of the service and it is not the ultimate truth, but only a guideline.

That is, at this stage we use VidiQ hints to complete the description, title and tags. Plus, we follow the prompts of a special checklist, which is displayed just below, to the right of the video.

In the video adding mode, VidiQ shows us a character counter in the title, description and tags - how many characters are used from the available ones.

Here you can also create tag templates for use in other videos of similar topics.

Keyword Inspector feature It works like this: when we click on any already added tag, VidiQ will show what other search queries can be used in the context. Or you can click on the inspector icon and enter any keyword that interests you.

Additionally, it shows the search volume and competition of the keyword.

As well as search interest in this request for a specific period - all the time, Last year, last 30 days. The information is displayed in the form of a graph, when you hover over the points of which, you can see the number of requests by week, day, etc.

Below are other queries that were of interest to users who entered the current query into the YouTube search.

Using this tool, you will collect more search tags for your video, including “bold”, that is, popular ones. And at the same time, you may have ideas for creating other related videos on this topic. True, in free version extensions, the number of adjacent tags is limited.

The "Translations" function is available in the paid version.

There are some more options at the very bottom of the download page. In particular, VidiQ shows recommended popular tags based on the data you specified during optimization. It also shows competitive videos from which you can borrow tags.

What VidiQ options are available when editing an added video? In principle, everyone is the same. There is also a “Create Video Icon” option in the extension editor.

And when adding interactive tips, you can save the current video as a template so you can quickly transfer tips from it to other videos.

In addition to selecting tags for videos at the download stage, keywords can be collected on the competitors’ video viewing page, as well as from search results. Below I discuss VidiQ’s capabilities in this regard in more detail.

On the page for viewing videos already added to the channel, there are a number of useful options and data from VidiQ. Moreover, many of them are available both for your videos and for any others that you watch on YouTube.

In particular, under your video, by clicking on the VidiQ icon next to the date of publication of the video, you can do the following:

Copy the end screen or tips from this video to any others you specify.

Turn on additional settings when embedding videos on a website (there are significantly more of them than in standard embedding capabilities from YouTube). For example, you can enable or disable video autoplay, subtitles, controls, full screen mode, YouTube logo, etc.

Go to the video icon editor and create a cover for your video in it. This option is also available in the video editor in Creator Studio.

If you click on the VidiQ icon under someone else's video that you are viewing, then:

You can enable additional settings when embedding videos.

And add a competitor’s channel to analyze statistics on views, subscriptions, added videos, and also see channel tags.

If you click on the VidiQ icon next to the comments under the video, can be opened different variants filtering comments. For example, by replies to a comment, by certain phrases, etc.

There is a VidiQ icon next to the reply button to a particular comment. By clicking on it, you can create a response template.

VidiQ shows even more interesting data to the right of the video:

On the Review tab The first thing that catches your eye is the video’s rating on a 100-point scale. It reflects the popularity of a video based on the percentage of interactions and number of views compared to other videos on YouTube.

On the Social tab The video's engagement rating is displayed, that is, the ratio of likes, dislikes, and the number of shares to the number of video views. If the mark is in the red zone, the involvement is poor, in the orange, turning into yellow - average, in the green - high.

Next to it is shown what percentage of the total number of interactions is YouTube. You can also connect Facebook here (if you use it to promote your videos).

On the “SEO” tab VidiQ's overall score for SEO optimization of the video is reflected. The maximum score is 100 points. It consists of:

The number and popularity of tags used for the video.
From the presence of keywords in the title and description.
From the presence of triple keywords, that is, those that appear simultaneously in the title, description, and video tags. Or, for example, they appear several times in the description...
From the presence of ranked tags and tags with high search volume.

Indicators 5/5 or 0/5 are a rating for one or another parameter.

Other indicators are also displayed here, such as: the number of words in the description, the number of elements in the end screen, the number of links in the description, including timecode links, the number of words per minute, etc.

Tab “Comparison of views for the first 28 days” allows you to compare different videos based on individual indicators. In particular, it compares the current video with the average performance of the channel, the last video watched, etc. (available on paid plans).

Check list is a kind of cheat sheet from VidiQ that helps in optimizing and promoting videos. Green checkmarks indicate what has been done according to the checklist, and red crosses indicate what has not been completed.

On the Channel tab some general data for the channel is displayed. Namely: the average number of views per day (based on the last 30 days), the number of views for the last 30 days, the average number of subscribers per day, the number of subscribers for the last 30 days, etc. Plus the % shows a comparison with the previous period. Red numbers and a down arrow mean a fall; green numbers and an up arrow mean an increase in indicators.

Video Tags Tab– all added tags for this video are displayed here. A number is displayed next to the ranked tags - this is the position of the video in the search results for this tag. The more ranking tags your video has, the better for its search engine promotion.

From here you can add other tags to your video. You can also download tags in a file or copy them to the clipboard (for example, if you collect tags for your videos from other videos or want to copy tags from this video to a similar one so as not to enter from scratch).

Channel Tags Tab– the general tags of the channel are displayed here; by clicking on the plus sign next to one or another tag, you can add it to the tags of your current video.

* You can see all this data to the right of the video for any YouTube video. Accordingly, you can use the collection of tags from these videos for your videos.

There are also additional VidiQ options on the SERP page. For example, when we enter in search bar key request - we are given videos for this request. So, if you turn on “Display tags under videos” on the right, then their tags will appear under the videos in the list.

However, in the free version of the extension, tags are shown only under the first few videos in the list. For the rest, you can go to the viewing page of any video and there, to the right of the video, you can see all its tags.

Additionally, on the right, the extension shows the assessment of the key query entered into the search line - search volume, competition assessment, overall score on a 100-point scale. The higher this score, the more popular the keyword.

And below are shown a few more popular keywords related to the entered query.

To the left of the search results there are also several interesting tabs of the VidiQ extension. They are also displayed on the toolbar on the left in the Creative Studio. Let's look at the main ones.

Channel audit– a section that shows express statistics on your channel for the last 30 days.

Below are the videos that have performed best on your channel - by number of views per hour, by subscriptions, and the most viewed videos over the last 30 days.

click on screenshots to enlarge

Achievements– a kind of “honor board” with the key successes of your channel. Achievements in the number of subscribers, views, likes, comments, etc. on a certain date.

The month and year when you had the best results in terms of subscriptions, views, likes, comments, etc. Plus a comparison of these indicators with the current month.

These are the useful tips and tools that the VidiQ extension offers to YouTube channel owners in its free version.

So, what is the algorithm for using Vidiq for video SEO optimization?

1) In the current tab, upload our video to the channel.

2) In the next one - open the search results page and enter a key query (you can enter different variants of queries one by one) that corresponds to the topic of the video - we collect suitable tags from popular videos of competitors. For analysis, you can use 5-10 videos of competitors with the largest number of views.

Additionally, in the adjacent tabs we open popular videos of competitors and from the viewing page we collect video tags + analyze the video - how the title is composed, description, what indicators it has.

When collecting tags from competitors, we give preference to those that are ranked - those next to which the position of the video in the search is indicated!

3) We add the collected tags to our video (preferably there should be no more than 15 of them), we use suitable key queries in the title and description. We optimize the video according to the checklist from Vidiq, in addition to SEO - we add the video to the playlist, create an end screen, tips, etc.

In this lesson, we looked at the capabilities and functionality of the VidiQ extension for YouTube. We figured out how to install and use it, in particular to collect keywords and optimize videos on the channel.

I'll be glad if this information useful for you!

Best regards, Victoria Karpova
