Current plugins and programs for Mozilla Firefox ® and others. Review of the DivX Player program Misunderstandings with formats and codecs

DivX Web Player is one of the components included in free package DivX Plus. The application serves to expand the capabilities of browsers, and more specifically, to ensure smooth video playback online. It supports viewing videos in both full screen and windowed modes. The program is essentially a browser-compatible plugin Internet Explorer, Opera, Firefox and Netscape.

In addition to streaming video, DivX Web Player has tools that will help you easily save your video to your computer. In this case, the download process is accompanied by information about the download speed, remaining time and size of the downloaded file. The utility is capable of playing and downloading videos in AVI, MP4, MOV, DivX5 and DivX6 formats. In addition, it is worth noting that the application is free.

Key Features and Functions

  • viewing streaming video in different formats;
  • ability to save video to hard drive;
  • cache management tools;

The instructions are not relevant. Starting with the tenth version, DivX Web Player spoke Russian. The installation process is now easier than before. But this does not prevent you from reading the instructions; it can still help when installing the player.

Download the DivX package from the official website. Let's start the installation. Closing everything open browsers. In the first window, select the installation language. The choice is small, there is no Russian, we leave English. Click Next:

In the next box, check the box next to “I accept the terms in the license agreement” (i.e., we agree with the license terms, a symbolic point) and click Agree:

On the next page, check the boxes for DivX Plus Web Player and DivX Plus Codec Pack. We remove the remaining checkboxes. We also uncheck the box next to Add shortcuts to my desktop, we don’t need extra shortcuts on the Desktop. Click Next:

Uncheck the box next to Include Registry Mechanic, we don’t need it. And click Next:

The installation process takes some time:

Next, you can enter your e-mail and receive newsletters from the DivX Lab team on English language. But since you are reading these instructions, you won’t need anything from this newsletter, leave the field empty and click Finish:

After installation, a page will open on the DivX web player website. You can just close it, there’s nothing interesting there.
It is advisable to restart your computer after installation. That's it, now you have DivX web player installed and you can easily watch online videos in DivX not only on our website, but also on many others.

Will the MPEG-4/DivX format enter the market of home stationary DVD players?

DivX has pirates and the Internet to thank for its fame and bad reputation. Thanks to this revolutionary format, films can be distributed over the Internet, and a two-hour video program in good quality can easily fit on a standard CD. Therefore, when it comes to DivX, editors of publications clutch their hearts and ask journalists: “just don’t write about how to transfer DVDs to DivX, otherwise film studios and human rights organizations will have an attack of heartburn.” However, our article shows that DivX is not only used by pirates.

Although the format's origins were a hack, today DivX is rightly called "MP3 for video." And just as MP3 once found a place for itself in the mobile entertainment industry and home electronics devices, DivX is beginning to pave its equally successful path in this direction.

DivX is synonymous with the mobile and desktop applications of the future in digital video. The format has been recognized by well-known manufacturers - technology leaders. Now it is being actively implemented in electronic devices- from stationary DVD players to mobile phones, from digital television devices to pocket PCs.

Leading companies in the production of consumer electronics, such as Sony, Philips, Matsushita, are working on creating a digital cinema standard based on MPEG-4. A number of telecommunications operators use the MPEG-4 standard to transmit video in mobile networks. Devices based on specialized chipsets for DivX playback are already available on the market.

Misunderstandings with formats and codecs

As practice shows, there is always a lot of confusion around MPEG-4 and DivX. The most common misconception is that Avi, DivX and MPEG-4 are the same thing. AVI and MKV are containers (file formats), or in other words storage and packaging of data. While DivX or XviD are codecs, that is, methods and implementation of encoding for recording video data into a file, and decoding information, respectively, for playing already recorded files. MPEG, in turn, describes both codecs and storage methods.

Codecs

Codec ( with der- dec oder) is a method and implementation of encryption for recording video data to a file, for example in AVI, and decrypting information, respectively, for playing already recorded AVI files.

The most popular commercial codec today is DivX. Its competition is from the non-commercial XviD (accordingly, the name is spelled backwards DivX).

Containers

During the widespread use of Windows 3.1x, Microsoft created the AVI container to store synchronous audio/video data. AVI is an abbreviation for Audio Video Interleave (alternating audio and video). AVI is a container format that can contain video/audio data compressed using various codec combinations. So, if MP3 and JPG files are obtained using only one type of data compression (MPEG Audio Layer 3 and JPEG), then an AVI file can contain different types of compressed data (for example, DivX for video and MP3 for audio). All AVI files look the same on the outside (they have the .AVI extension), but on the inside they can differ significantly.

A long time has passed since AVI was created, and today it is the most commonly known format for presenting video. The rise of its popularity was largely facilitated by the emergence of DivX.

MKV is a less popular container format than AVI. It got its name from the abbreviation of the Russian word “Matryoshka”, which symbolically reflects the principles of its work. Main advantage of MKV is its complete openness. MKV has a number of advantages over AVI, however, according to the latest information, DivX Networks, which is a leader in the development and promotion of new formats, plans to use a new container, which will still be built on the basis of AVI.

History of MPEG

This is the name of an ISO expert group that works to create standards for encoding and compressing video and audio data. Standards prepared by the committee are given the same name.

MPEG-1 was the first standard to appear on the market. It was developed in 1992 for video compression on CD-ROM and formed the basis of Video-CD. The quality parameters of video data processed by MPEG-1 are in many ways similar to conventional VHS video, so this format is used primarily in areas where it is inconvenient or impractical to use standard analog video media. The format has become widespread in Asia and has seriously displaced VHS devices.

In the MPEG-2 standard, compared to MPEG-1, multi-channel audio has been added, image resolution has been increased, and encoding quality has been improved. As a result, MPEG-2 has become widespread in the satellite television and DVD industries.

MPEG-3 was supposed to be a new standard, but in the end it only slightly expanded the capabilities of MPEG-2.

Truly revolutionary is MPEG-4, the development of which was officially completed in 1998. But since MPEG-4 is, in fact, a set of tools, they are expanded and supplemented. The latest such additions to the standard were made in May of this year. It became an extension of MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 and contains many innovative solutions, not all of which have yet found application in devices and media content.

MPEG-4

The MPEG-4 standard was conceived as a way to transmit streaming media data, primarily video, over low-bandwidth channels. Unexpectedly, it gained popularity among users due to the fact that it made it possible to place full-length films lasting one and a half to two hours in good quality on just one CD and exchange video files on the Internet.

The MPEG-4 standard sets the principles for working with the digital representation of media data for three areas: interactive multimedia itself (including products distributed on optical discs and via the Internet), graphic applications (synthetic content) and digital television - DTV. In fact, the format sets the rules for organizing the environment, and the environment is object-oriented. It deals not just with streams and arrays of media data, but with media objects.

At the same bitrate and certain encoding conditions, the image quality of a movie in MPEG-4 can be comparable or even better than when using MPEG-1 or MPEG-2. The video compression algorithm in MPEG-4 works according to the same scheme as in previous formats. When encoding the source image, the codec saves key frames, and instead of saving intermediate ones, it predicts and stores only information about changes in the current frame in relation to the previous one. The information obtained in this way is placed in a file. Sound compression is most often done in MP3, Ogg Vorbis, WMA format. However, it is possible to use any codec, up to the six-channel AC-3 used in DVD.

The history of DivX

Original codec DivX ;-) 3.11 Alpha is a cracked version of MPEG-4 Version 3 (MP43c32.dll). The authors of the patch, known by the nicknames MaxMorice and Gej, published it in September 1999 on their Web site. It was no coincidence that the smiley face in the title appeared. At that time, the American company Circuit City was trying to market Digital Video Express (DIVX) video systems on a Pay-per-View basis. The business idea is to sell films on CDs, the cost of which would be low, but for repeated viewing it would be necessary to pay a fee. Back then, hacking the Digital Video Express security system was the goal of many American hackers. Before this could be done, DivX disappeared from the market for economic reasons, and French programmers MaxMorice and Jerome "Gej" Rota immortalized it in the name of the new format.

In January 2000, the next version of DivX was created - 3.22 or 3.11 VKI (Variable Keyframe Interval). It has improved decoding algorithms and reliability. In May, DivX Networks was born, co-founded by Gej with former MP3.COM director Jordan Greenhall and Joe Bezdek. In July, DivX Networks launched the Majo project, which launched OpenDivX in January 2001. OpenDivX is incompatible with 3.11 and has nothing in common with it except the name. In August 2001, DivX Networks released their own DivX 4.0 and froze Open Source. Before the 4.12 codec, all previous versions were worse than DivX ;-).

In March 2002, the first commercial version of DivX 5.0x appeared. The free basic option produces a video stream that conforms to the ISO certified version of the MPEG-4 format. While the commercial version of Pro fully supports Global Motion Compensation, B-Frames (frames encoded with support of two frames, B = Bi-directional) and QPel (denotation of the method of motion restoration, Q = 1/4).

In the summer of 2003, DivX Networks announced the release of the 5.1 codec, which, thanks to the implemented technology for evaluating visual frames, allows obtaining better results at lower bitrates than using previous versions. This codec will improve the quality of movie playback on weak computers and home devices.

In 2004, a version of DivX Q is expected, which, according to the developers, should be twice as effective as the current 5.1x.

In addition, DivX Networks plans to create a one-stop solution. It is planned to use our own development as a container for video and audio tracks (the main reasons for incompatibility). According to DivX Networks, the AVI format provides the best option for storage, but requires minor modifications. Negotiations are underway on licensing and audio format.

In parallel, an independent team created the XviD format, which is less popular, based on OpenDivX.

MPEG-4 audio formats

The audio track in MPEG-4 can be mono, stereo or even multi-channel AC3, similarly used in DVD. Supported audio formats: MP3, Ogg Vorbis, WMA, ACC, VGF, AC3 and others.

The most popular is MP3 ( comment from Very Angry Editor: it would be more correct to say MPEG-1 Layer3, but one cannot help but admit that the name established today is still MP3 ). Currently MP3 is supported in its pure form Acustic systems and all modern DVD players, the production of handheld devices and car radios that play MP3 has been launched. Thus, MP3 became the first widely accepted audio storage format after CD-Audio. Despite the fact that MP3 has been around for a long time, newer formats vying for its place have not yet been able to achieve the same level of popularity. This also applies to the development of WMA ( Windows Media Audio) from Microsoft, and VGF - a joint brainchild of Japanese companies NNT and Yamaha, and MPEG-2 AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) - one of the attempts to improve MP3.

The only real "threat" to MP3 today comes from the new Ogg Vorbis format. This development is initially completely open and free and has great potential. Compared to MP3, the Ogg Vorbis format has better sound quality for the same file size. Its popularity is also evidenced by the fact that Ogg Vorbis, like MP3, has gone beyond the computer and is supported by some household audio systems.

MPEG-4 playback devices

The undisputed leader was and remains the computer. The inconveniences associated with this way of watching films are obvious. You can’t sit comfortably on the sofa with the remote control in your hands and enjoy watching. You have to wait for loading, the field of view is limited by the display, 5.1 sound is not available to everyone, and so on and so forth. Everyone can find in their configuration many reasons why it would be a good idea to have a specialized device for themselves.

This begs a reasonable question: why not, for example, a regular DVD player, be equipped with the ability to play DivX? However, as you can see by reading the history of DivX, there is no unity in formats and solutions. This is the main difficulty and the main obstacle to DivX's expansion beyond the computer industry. PCs have no equal when it comes to solution flexibility. The PC is limited only by the power of the processor and the perfection of the configuration in the ability to find a way to play any combination of video and audio formats, as well as for any encoding settings to find a solution in the form of a codec or viewer settings.

Users of mobile applications or desktop solutions based on specialized chips do not have such luxury; they have to rely on the foresight of manufacturers and the ability to update software for new versions of codecs. Naturally, there is not yet a single solution outside of a PC that could read absolutely all formats.

Therefore, those who want to watch a “pirated” collection on a TV screen using a stationary player are unlikely to ever get an ideal solution. The manufacturer's answer will be this: use certain settings of the encoding program for an acceptable result. As a rule, this is a rejection of the advanced capabilities of MPEG4 such as QPEL, GMC when recording films, as well as some restrictions on audio formats.

In any case, this should not be a hindrance when choosing a DVD player for home video enthusiasts, as well as those who want to have the latest technology with maximum capabilities.

DivX films are not inferior in quality to DVDs, but are much cheaper to produce and are more compact. Many modern camcorders and digital cameras offer the ability to create DivX video, and there are also a huge number of programs for processing and recording video in this format.

To play DivX you can now find and mobile devices. For example, a mobile player based on a compact hard drive with a 3.8-inch screen from Archos, a review of which is available on. Or an MP3 player with a built-in Thomson Lyra screen. Xoro also plans to introduce a similar player with a 5.8-inch widescreen screen.

But the driving force of the market will still be stationary DVD players with advanced functionality.

DVD players with MPEG-4 DivX functionality

We're talking about widely available DVD players priced up to $250, which can now be found on the shelves of electronics stores, and in Western Europe even in regular supermarkets. The ability to play MP3 and JPEG files on these players is standard. But it was not always so. The first DVD players only worked with DVD, VCD and Audio CD formats. We have every reason to believe that within the next year, DivX playback will become standard on all widely available players on the market.

What about today? The first DVD players with MPEG-4 support appeared in early 2003 from KISS Technologies at a price of about $500. This price could not attract the masses of users, so they did not arouse much enthusiasm in the market. The situation changed radically a few months after the appearance of the second wave of cheaper players in the $200-250 category. So, for example, at the CeBIT-2003 exhibition, the German company MAS Elektronik AG announced the Xoro HSD 400 product (support for 3.11 and higher, built-in 5.1 audio decoder, VGA output) for only $250.

The market has turned towards DivX. The press has published a lot of articles on the prospects of MPEG-4 and DivX in home appliances. Heated discussions broke out. As a result, DVD/MPEG players from several manufacturers are available on the market today; the demand for them is so high that they are in short supply both in Europe and in Russia.

Today, three manufacturers offer chipsets for the production of DivX players: Mediatek, ESS Technology and Sigma Design. Sigma has historically been first and skimmed the cream for about a year. However, today ESS is the undisputed leader in this market. ESS Vibratto offers a powerful, affordable solution for playing all popular formats and codecs (including the old 3.11). In addition, based on a chip from ESS, unlike Sigma, 6-channel Dolby Digital audio decoding can be implemented.

Modern popular players implemented on ESS microcontrollers with DivX support

  • Philips 737 - stylish player (built-in 6-channel audio decoder not installed)
  • Xoro HSD 311 - popular affordable DivX player with support for 6-channel audio
  • Xoro HSD 400 Plus - modification 311v stylish design with karaoke and VGA output (progressive scan PAL/NTSC), is a successor to Xoro HSD 400 and Xoro HSD 410

Often mentioned on forums DVD player JVC XV NP1. However, unfortunately, this player only plays MPEG-4 movies on memory cards.

Summary

DivX is a progressive implementation of the MPEG-4 format. It offers significantly higher video compression rates and brings a number of revolutionary innovations. Application areas of MPEG-4 include multimedia applications for mobile use and the Internet, digital television, home videos and mobile communications. With the advent of specialized processors, it has become possible to create inexpensive universal stationary and mobile players that, in addition to DVD films and well-known formats, also play files based on the MPEG-4 format. Today, the price, characteristics and compatibility of players with formats have reached a level at which the purchase makes sense for all home video enthusiasts.

Player is a utility with which you can play video files in *.avi format. The program has the ability to rotate the screen for ease of viewing; viewing can be done both in a window and on the entire screen.

Like most programs for smartphones, the utility is installed by unpacking the -file. In this case, everything that is needed is unpacked into the appropriate folder, and an element for uninstallation will appear in the application manager:

We can view more detailed information about the installed application by selecting from the menu Functions our smartphone item Show details:

1) Launch:

When launching the utility, no screensavers or registration prompts appear. This fact indicates that the software is distributed free of charge, and the developers did not make it their main goal to “raise” money by developing this utility.

2) Interface and program structure:

In this section of the review we will look at general description interface of the main menu of the program:

The program's main menu interface presents the user with a list of audio files. In this case, the program provides two so-called demos for an initial viewing of this player. I was disappointed by the fact that the program apparently does not scan the smartphone’s memory for detection *. avi files, and therefore does not add them to the playlist. Therefore, in order for a video file to appear in the playlist, we need to place it in the “videos” folder, which appears after installing the program.

I would also like to note that at the bottom of the main menu of the program there are two items: on the left is the item Options(contains all the necessary functions for adequate work with the utility), on the right there is an item Exit(using this item we can exit the program to the main menu of our smartphone).

3) Detailed description of Menu:

Well, we have looked at the interface of the main menu of the program, and now I would like to move on to a detailed consideration of the item Options, main menu of the program:

  • Play- using this function we can play one or another video file from the list of the main menu of the program. The playback interface is no different - to the right of the playback picture there is an option to adjust the sound of the playback recording, below under the playback picture there is a playback progress counter. We can adjust both so-called options using the joystick of our smartphone:

  • Delete- using this function we can remove unnecessary *.avi files from the list of the main menu of the program.
  • Refresh List- using this function we can update the list of video files if the video file we copied to the “videos” folder is not displayed in the playlist of the main menu of the program.
  • Sort by-using this function we can sort video files from the playlist according to the following parameters:

  • Settings- using this function we can work with the basic settings of the program:

  • Show thumbnails- with this setting we can turn on/off. option to display large/small icons in the main menu of the program.
  • Display time- with this setting we can turn on/off. parameter for displaying the display time of the video file being played.
  • Display seek bar- with this setting we can turn on/off. parameter to request continuation of video playback in case of emergency exit from the utility.
  • Time display- with this setting we can configure the time display parameter on the display, setting it either as a saving indicator or as an end indicator.
  • Default mode- with this setting we can adjust the position of the recording being played on the monitor of our smartphone. There are three options - positioning on the right, left, or portrait option.
  • Start fullscreen- with this setting we can turn on/off. option to display the playing video file on the entire screen of our smartphone.
  • Playback option- with this setting we can change the basic parameters for playing video files.
  • Lanuage- with this setting we can change the language of the program interface. Unfortunately, the Russian interface variation is not present in the program.
  • Brightness- using this setting we can adjust the brightness of the video played by the program.
  • Contrast- using this setting we can adjust the contrast of the video played by the program.
  • Saturation- using this setting we can adjust the light saturation of the video played by the program.
  • A/V synch- using this setting we can adjust the synchronization time of the video played by the program.
  • Device name- with this setting we can set the name of the playback device. The full meaning of this setting remains a mystery to me:

  • Username- using this setting we can set the username:

  • - using this setting we can set the user access code:

  • Help- this function allows us to use the program’s reference data:

  • DivX.com- using this function we can go online and automatically go to the developer’s website. Personally, when selecting this function, the program thought for a long time, and then gave a connection error.
  • Register device- using this function we can register this software, as I understand it, this function purely for form's sake:

  • Exit- with this function we can exit the program to the main menu of our smartphone.
Let's summarize:

(+):

The advantages include

">

a fairly wide range of utility settings; This software is distributed free of charge.

">

(-): The disadvantages include too lack of Russian interface language; the program does not scan the smartphone's memory for *.avi files, and therefore does not add them to the playlist. You need to add video files to the list manually; There are several settings, the purpose of which can only be guessed at.

">">">">">">">">">"> ">"> ">Conclusion: ">">">">">">">">">">">">">">"> program DivX Player is indeed capable of playing *.avi files. But looking back at the disadvantages described above, I found it necessary to look for an alternative option to this software, which I advise you to do.
