What is Apple AirPlay?

AirPlay is Apple's proprietary wireless streaming protocol that allows you to send video and audio from a Mac or iOS device to an AirPlay-enabled receiver such as an Apple TV (headphones, transmitter, etc.). First this technology was introduced as AirTunes for iTunes in 2004.

At that time, AirPlay's capabilities were limited to wireless audio transmission only, but in 2010, Apple added AirPlay support to iOS with the ability to stream video. A year later, the company implemented the “mirroring” function in AirPlay, and in May 2018 introduced a new version of the protocol - AirPlay 2.

What is “mirroring” (screen repeating, screen duplication, mirroring) AirPlay

AirPlay mirroring – the ability to duplicate the screen display of a Mac or iOS gadget to a receiver (Apple TV + TV) with AirPlay support. This functionality is supported by both iPhone and iPad, and Mac. Although mirror reflection can be used to send video and audio files, some content may be subject to restrictions due to the risk of copyright infringement. If you try to mirror your Mac's screen while playing protected iTunes content, for example, you'll see a gray window instead of the video. But displaying any video from movie sites on TV is no problem.

What is AirPlay 2?

Apple introduced a new version of the AirPlay protocol as part of a developer conference. The manufacturer planned to add support for AirPlay 2 in the 11th edition of iOS 11, but the technology became available only in May 2018 with the release iOS updates 11.4. In AirPlay 2, for the first time, support for multiroom mode appeared, thanks to which owners of Apple devices can use several gadgets to play music.

AirPlay 2 is also supported by Apple TV devices running tvOS 11.4 and later. Apple HomePod speakers update automatically. Legacy third-party devices may not be compatible with AirPlay 2; please check with your vendor for support.

How to use AirPlay to stream content or mirror

You can use the AirPlay feature to either stream content to the receiver (audio or video) or mirror the current device's screen (including audio) to it. Before using the feature, make sure Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections are active and Airplane mode is turned off on your device. The simplest method of working with AirPlay: click on the AirPlay icon and select the desired receiver from the list that appears.

1. Swipe up on the screen to call "Control Center". Owners of iPhone X, iPhone XS and iPhone XR need to swipe down from the top right corner.

2. Use 3D Touch gesture to launch screen "Complete" on the right side of the display.

3. Click on the icon wireless transmission(an icon with three circles and a triangle) next to the playback elements.

4. Wait until the list of receivers appears on the screen.

5. Click on the desired receiver and start playing media content.

To stop streaming, repeat the process, but in step 5, select iPhone or iPad.

1. Open "Command centre".

2. Click "Screen repeat" on the left side of the screen.

3. Wait until the nearest AirPlay device appears on your display.

4. Select the receiver to which you want to display the image.

To stop streaming, repeat the process by selecting in step 4 "Stop screen repeating".

To connect your Mac to Apple TV, select the AirPlay icon in the menu bar, iTunes or QuickTime, or open "System Settings""Monitors" to detect the AirPlay screen (it will work as wireless display connected to the Mac). We talked about how to broadcast (transmit) video from a Mac to a TV screen.

The easiest way to organize “mirroring” a Mac is through the icon on the menu bar. Tap the AirPlay icon in the top right corner of the screen, then select your desired receiver.

Once the connection is established, you can mirror the built-in display, mirror the Apple TV, or turn off the monitor and use the Apple TV as an external screen.

How to output videos, photos, audio from iPhone/iPad to Mac or Windows computer using AirPlay function

Despite the popularity of AirPlay among users, Apple does not allow Macs or Windows computers to be used as receivers. Fortunately, you can bypass Apple's ban using third-party emulators, such as AirServer or Reflector. The first one will cost $20. The application is available in versions for Mac and Windows and can work with Google Cast and Miracast. Users can try the program for free for 14 days. Reflector ($15) is a cheaper alternative to AirServer and also supports Google Cast and Miracast. A 7-day trial period is available.

You can transfer video from iPad to TV via HDMI cable, USB or wireless connection using Apple consoles TV. There is no need to perform jailbreaking or other complex manipulations; the video on the TV will be played from any application on the iPad.

Connect via Apple TV

If you plan to constantly watch videos from your iPad on your TV, then the most effective solution would be to buy an Apple TV set-top box. The main purpose of the device is to watch movies, play music from iTunes and Apple Music. When connected to one Wi-Fi networks the user can sync with the iTunes library on the computer and give full access to the Apple TV. The set-top box also has access to App Store, so you can download and run some applications on your TV.

With AirPlay, you can wireless connection Apple TV with iOS devices. It is AirPlay that will help you display video from your iPad on your TV.

  1. Connect Apple TV to your TV.
  2. Open Settings and turn on AirPlay.
  3. Connect your iPad and Apple TV to the same Wi-Fi network.
  4. Call Control Center on your tablet.
  5. Select the AirPlay feature and tap Apple TV.
  6. Move the “Video repeat” switch to the active position.

A wireless connection to the turned on set-top box will be established automatically. To watch a video from iPad on TV, find it on your tablet. When you click on record, the AirPlay icon will appear - start playing the movie and click on it. Select Apple TV from the list to transfer the image to the set-top box. Since the “Video repeat” function is enabled, the picture will be duplicated.

The advantage of this method is that the power of the TV does not matter. The set-top box does all the work, and the TV acts only as an image broadcaster.

The only thing technical requirement- presence of an HDMI connector or Wi-Fi adapter to connect to Apple TV.

Wired connection

If you're not ready to buy an Apple TV, use a wired connection via HDMI or USB. If your TV has an HDMI port, use a Digital AV adapter from Apple. This is quite an expensive pleasure; when purchased together with an HDMI cable, the cost can rise to 5 thousand rubles, but it is still cheaper than Apple TV.

  1. Connect Digital AV and iPad via Lightning port.
  2. Take hdmi cable. Insert one end into the connector on the TV, the other into the port on the adapter.
  3. Open the TV menu and select the signal source (HDMI number to which the iPad is connected).

Digital AV supports Display Mirroring, so the image will be duplicated from the tablet screen to the TV. To make sure the connection is correct, try playing a movie or looking through photos.

Using a Lightning-VGA adapter, you can connect your iPad to a TV or projector with a VGA connector, but this method is bad because the sound will not be transmitted. As a result, to play sound you will have to use the tablet’s built-in speakers or connect an additional audio system.

If your TV has a USB connector, you can connect your iPad like external storage and start playing videos and music stored in memory. To establish a connection, you only need a Lightning-USB cable and the correctly selected signal source in the TV settings.

DLNA setup

If you want to transfer video from your iPad to your TV screen wirelessly and Apple TV, then there is another way, which is to set up a DLNA server. For the method to work, you will need:

  1. iPad.
  2. TV with DLNA support.
  3. Belkin MediaPlay app.

The main disadvantage of this method is that it may stop working at any time, since the application will be deleted from the AppStore. Usually an analogue is immediately found, but still an option with Apple TV or wired connection looks more stable and proven.

After a few seconds, the image from the iPad screen will begin to be broadcast on the TV screen. Some models allow you to control content played via DLNA using the remote control, but it is difficult to compile an exact list of suitable devices. Try it on your TVs, there is no other way to understand whether the method works.

If you become the owner iPhone phone- You are very lucky, because now many opportunities and boundaries open up before you. Your phone contains many functions and programs that will make your life much easier. Today, we will tell you how you can connect your iPhone to Apple TV, or rather, how to connect your phone to your TV.

How to connect iPhone to Apple TV yourself?

First of all, we should talk about the requirements. To connect your device to the TV you need to have:

Apple TV 3rd generation device, as well as software version 6.0 or later.

iPhone with iOS 7 or higher new version(iPad, iPod will also work).

Let's start setting up!

1. We connect the Apple TV device to the TV, as well as to a power source. We wait until the setup screen appears.

3. We touch the iOS device to the Apple TV and wait until prompts appear on both screens.

4. On iOS you need to enter your Apple ID and password.

6. After this, Apple TV will start the configuration process, we just have to wait.

7. Once the settings are complete, Apple TV is ready to use!

Apple TV looks the same as most TV set-top boxes, but this device works not only with Apple technology, but also with other home devices. For example, with using Apple TV lets you set up and control Hue lights, play games, download apps, and airplay videos from your iPhone or Mac to your big screen TV via AirPlay. Of course, Apple TV also has problems. We will talk about the most common of them in this article.

The essence of the fable is that Apple TV problems quite often arise even if the device is connected and configured correctly. These could be wifi connection failures, poor quality playback, or problems with the home theater. As a rule, the user can eliminate this kind of trouble himself. We will talk about what and how to do in each individual case. So:

Apple TV problems with WiFi

This is perhaps the most common category of problems that almost all Apple TV owners complain about, but which in the vast majority of cases arise through their own fault, and which can also be fixed without much effort. The standard list of complaints about so-called “wifi problems” in the case of Apple TV looks something like this:

  • “does not find” the wifi network;
  • does not connect to home wifi network;
  • connects to wi-fi, but does not connect to the Internet;
  • Wi-Fi connection often disappears and turns on " Buffering«.

If your Apple TV suddenly behaved in a similar way, then the troubleshooting procedure should begin by checking the IP address. To do this, go to “ Settings ", then - in " Basic " and click " Net «.

  • if this same address is not displayed in the “IP address” line, then you must first turn off (from the outlet, and keep it turned off for at least 1 minute) the existing router, after which ( “Settings” -> “System” -> “Restart now” );
  • if the IP is displayed, the set-top box is connected to Wi-Fi, but the connection is constantly interrupted, then most likely there is weak signal. Try moving the Apple TV to another location, closer to the router, or, conversely, move the router closer to the set-top box.
Apple TV problems with AirPlay

Through AirPlay service, as you know, you can stream a picture from an iPad or to a TV screen. This service is very easy to set up and, of course, is very useful in itself. If it works well, which is not always the case. If AirPlay suddenly stops working, the first thing you need to do is check that Apple TV and the right smartphone, tablet or laptop were connected to one. If these devices “catch” different networks, or the mobile device is connected to the Internet via a network mobile operator, then AirPlay will not work. One by one we open " Settings » in each of the devices and make sure that the name of your home wifi network is displayed in the corresponding sections.

It also often happens that AirPlay simply does not work. That is, you open a video application, get ready to turn on the stream, but for some reason the usual AirPlay logo is not detected. In this case, we can assume that the application you selected does not support the AirPlay service. In addition, it may also be that such support is blocked. Some mobile and TV apps actually disable AirPlay support to prevent users from streaming certain video content.

But AirPlay may not work due to a normal glitch. So it would also be a good idea to check your Apple TV settings in this situation. Open " Settings "and make sure that the AirPlay function is enabled. In addition, if AirPlay works, but is not stable and/or constantly lags, then also try moving your iPhone, iPad or Macbook closer to the console. If the problem was resolved in this way, then, obviously, the cause of the lags was the low quality of the streaming signal, and not AirPlay itself.

Apple TV - video problems

Sometimes Apple TV starts showing video without sound, or there is sound, but the picture disappears. In such cases, before taking any drastic measures, try simply restarting the stream. If restarting does not solve the problem, check. It must be well connected at both ends. If possible, connect your Apple TV using a different HDMI cable.

Plus, you need to check the resolution of the set-top box: “Settings” -> “Audio and video” -> “Resolution” . You will most likely see an option " Auto ", and that's okay. However, sometimes you need to manually set the resolution to what is supported.

Apple TV - Audio Problems

If the sound from the set-top box starts to glitch, then you should also start by checking the volume level. It can be disabled. If everything is fine with the volume, then we restart the stream as standard. Then we check the quality Apple connections TV to the TV (HDMI or optical cable, if used), as well as the quality of the connection to the audio receiver or . Carefully disconnect the cable and then connect it again. In the vast majority of cases, all “repairs” are limited to this.

Apple TV problems with the remote control

Without a remote control, Apple TV is just a black box, beautiful and almost useless. Almost - this is because if there is something wrong with the standard console remote control, then you can use it instead. But only if you have previously installed and configured mobile app « Remote control » (Remote App). That's one thing.

As for the problems with the remote control, the most common one is the failure of pairing this device with the set-top box. That is, it simply does not connect, and “ “. In such a situation, you must first check the battery charge of the remote control. If it is discharged, then put the remote control on charge for at least half an hour. Then we bring it close to the body of the console (at a distance of no more than 5-7 cm), simultaneously pressing the buttons " Menu " And " Increase volume "and hold them like this for at least 5 seconds (the pairing process will begin). After the set-top box “sees” its remote control, disconnect it from the network. We wait a minute, turn it on and test the quality of the remote control.
