The disk drive in the system unit does not open. The disk drive on the computer does not open, what should I do? The tray does not come out

Disk drives are gradually becoming a thing of the past, and new laptop models are no longer equipped with them, and buyers of full-fledged system units practically do not install them, preferring to take the place of an additional hard drive or SSD drive.

Despite this, in some offices, as well as in many homes, relatively old computers with disk drives remain. In addition, external drives are used from time to time.

Most often, the drive is used when it is necessary to install a licensed software, which is available on the disk, as well as drivers. This could be Windows, various Adobe products, professional software, games and much more.

If you want to insert a disk into the drive or, conversely, remove it from there, users may encounter a situation where it does not open. You can solve this problem without turning to specialists, and below I will give the most effective methods.

Why won't the drive open?

To decide which way to open the drive, you first need to understand the main reasons why it does not open. I will highlight the most common problems that lead to this:

  • Malfunction of the electronic board of the drive itself
  • A disc stuck inside the device that may have crumbled or was initially inserted incorrectly
  • Mechanical problems, such as broken gears that are responsible for extending the drive bay

It is impossible to determine in advance the reason why the drive does not open. To make it easier to fix the problem, I recommend following all the tips below one by one until you achieve the desired result.

How to open a disk drive if it won't open

If you pressed the drive open button several times, but this did not lead to the desired result, you can assume that the button is faulty. You can verify this or refute these assumptions by listening to the clicking sound when you press it. But if the goal is to open the drive, proceed to the methods described below.

Use Windows Tools

IN operating system Windows provides the ability to open the drive directly from the interface, without having to press a button. To do this, go to “My Computer” and right-click on the drive. Next, select “Eject” from the pop-up menu, after which the drive should open.

Please note: There are also dozens of applications that allow you to open the drive. Most often these are programs whose main purpose is to burn discs. If the method described above for opening the drive using Windows did not give results, you should not resort to third party applications, since they refer specifically to the operating system command.

Open the drive with a paper clip

When designing a drive, manufacturers include the possibility of emergency opening. The user can manually move the mechanism that is responsible for opening the drive. To do this, there is a small hole on the front panel of the device, where you need to insert a needle and press so that the mechanisms work and the drive opens.

If the problem is related specifically to mechanical jamming, and not to a malfunction of the electronic board, then this method almost always helps solve the problem. You can also try to pry the drive tray with a thin tool and try to pull it out using mechanical force, perhaps eliminating the snag that prevents the tray with the disc from opening.

Important: By applying great force in an attempt to open the drive, you can break the gears that are responsible for extending the tray. They are most often made of plastic.

Checking the cable and reconnecting the drive

When none of the tips listed above helps open the drive, you should try unplugging it and reconnecting it. To do this, turn off the computer and remove the side cover of the system unit, find the drive cables and disconnect them.

Make sure that the cables are not damaged (they may have been pinched and are no longer working). If there are no signs of damage, reconnect them, turn on the computer and try opening the drive.

Please note: It is extremely rare that this method helps get rid of the problem if the option with a paperclip given above was tried. This is due to the fact that the drive must be opened with a paper clip, even if it is completely disconnected from the power supply.

Usually the drive does not open exactly at the moment when it absolutely needs to be opened urgently. It's even worse than if yours.

You need to pull him out and give him, but he won’t come out. What to do? Why did this happen? Don't panic, the problem may be temporary. Reboot your computer and try again. Did not help? The drive won't open anymore?

Try opening regular means. Click “start” =>>, “computer” and on the drive icon (after clicking the left mouse button) select the “eject disk” option.

No results? Let's go ahead. Take a thin object, like a needle, and look for a small hole on the drive itself, just under the needle.

Insert it and press. This is an emergency opening of the drive, in most cases it opens.

Did it help, or is your drive still not opening? Of course, impatience is growing, calm down, it will open up where it can go.

Most likely, in a hurry, you installed the disk incorrectly - this happened to me three times.

Take a sharp object, like a knife with a blunt end, press the button to open the drive and carefully try to help it open from all sides, just do not press too hard.

I hope you have resolved the problem and your drive has opened. No, then let's use it last option. We will disassemble our personal PC ourselves or go to a service center.

The difficulty in telling how to disassemble a computer or laptop in order to remove the drive is that in all models this happens in its own way.

It’s very good if you have, for example, an Asus laptop. I should note that this manufacturer makes laptops with very accessible methods for repairing and connecting additional devices.

You just have to turn your laptop over (usually this always happens) and unscrew a few screws in the drive area. Then pull out the tray and disconnect the cable. You can even change the drive yourself to another one.

In other models, such operations can also be performed, only in most cases you have to remove the keyboard and disconnect the screw securing the drive.

Such a technical operation requires great care, otherwise damage will occur that cannot be corrected without a workshop.

You can find out a few more reasons and how to fix it by clicking on the link (above)

On a computer, removing the drive is much easier. We unscrew the wall, side or back, depending on who you are, disconnect the drive cable, unscrew the screw and pull it out. Everything described above concerns the problem of how to remove a disk if the disk drive does not open.

If you pulled out the drive and saw that it was damaged, I would not fool around with repairs, but install a new one. Firstly, most likely, you won’t be able to fix it yourself, and no one in the workshop will do it for free.

Today, a new one costs about $15 in the store. If you consider that the workshop will charge you at least 5 dollars just for pulling it out and putting it in, not to mention the repairs, and besides, sometimes you have to go there and spend almost the whole day, then come again to pick it up - then draw your conclusions yourself.

I hope now you know why the drive won’t open and how to open it.

Despite the fact that the presence of a disk drive on a PC now seems a little archaic, millions of users still have such drives, and some still use them regularly. However, the practicality of these devices is far from ideal. The mechanics wear out, the laser head reads data worse and worse, there are also cases when the disk gets stuck in the drive, and the latter refuses to open at all. Dedicated to the last incident this material, in which I will tell you what to do if the disk drive on your computer does not open, and what methods will help you fix it.

Why won't the disk drive open on my PC?

So, you inserted the disk into your drive, its lid slammed shut, and data reading seemed to begin. But the disc was never read (you may even have heard some crunching sounds from the drive), and you decide to remove the disc from the optical drive. But that was not the case, the disk drive does not want to open, and pressing the disk eject button does not give any result. Next, I will tell you what could be the reason for this.

What to do if the disk drive on your computer does not open

Conclusion

If you can’t open the disk drive on your computer, I recommend using the entire set of tips I listed above. The most effective of all techniques seems to be the method using wire - it helps to open even “tightly” stuck optical drive disks. If none of what I described helped, then you should contact service center– your drive may need major repairs.

Hi all. Recently I encountered a small problem. It all started with the fact that when opening the drive jammed and opened only after several attempts. This went on for a couple of months - there was no time to understand the reason, and, to be honest, there was no desire. In the end, it all ended with the DVD drive no longer opening at all and then completely disappearing from the system (although it was detected in the BIOS).

At first, I didn’t connect these two phenomena in any way (okay, the drive doesn’t open, but it should be determined) and decided that the recent update of the Daemon Tools program was to blame. To check, I booted under the second system (well, I have two of them - one on , the second on a traditional one), but the disk was not detected in it either. Everything is clear - the problem is in the drive itself.

What to do if the DVD drive does not open?

The first thing you can do is use the manual opening mechanism of the drive. To do this, take a knitting needle with a diameter of 1 mm (a needle, a pin) and insert it into the hole on the front panel of the drive until it stops and press a little, the drive should open slightly, after which you can safely pull it out by hand. In my case it looks like this:

But this method is quite inconvenient to use, and in some cases this requires partial disassembly of the case, so let’s move on to finding out the reason why the drive does not open.

The warranty on the drive has already expired for six months, so it can be disassembled for inspection and cleaning (maybe a gear is jammed). Disassembling the case involves unscrewing four screws and removing the front panel. To remove the panel (release the latches), an unnecessary plastic card is useful:

But the inspection did not reveal any jambs - everything was in perfect condition. I decided to see how everything was working and connected the disassembled drive, tried to open and close it - everything worked. If you have the opposite situation (the drive does not open), then first check the condition of the electric motor and drive belt:

If it is stretched and slips, replace it or rub it with rosin (temporary measure). If the electric motor does not work, then you have a direct route to a service or store. Decide for yourself where exactly - sometimes it’s cheaper to buy a new one than to repair an old one. This unit turned out to be working for me and I continued my search. I won’t bore you with listing all the manipulations that I performed, let’s move on to the result. The reason turned out to be that the opening mechanism of the DVD drive could not open the halves of the spindle that spins the disk; between these halves the disk is fixed due to the attraction of a neodymium magnet from the upper part of the spindle to the lower one. You can remove the upper half practically without disassembling the drive; to do this, remove the protective metal plate at the top of the drive:

Then pick up the plastic disk and remove it:

If after this the DVD drive opens and closes normally, then the easiest way to fix the problem is to leave the disc in the drive, with the working side up (this way the drive will not see it and will not start every time the system starts). This method did not suit me, because... The growing hacker son often uses a DVD-ROM and can easily close it empty, but because of this, he doesn’t really want to disassemble the computer every time. Therefore, I went a similar, but slightly different route, to increase the air gap (reduce the adhesion force of the magnets) between the spindle halves I used regular electrical tape:

The quantity is determined experimentally. In my case, two layers were enough.

I hope this note helped you if the drive does not open.

In addition, there is one useful feature that will allow you to open and close the drive without touching it (you can show off in front of your friends). For me, the drive button is not visible at all and this sometimes helps me. These are two files, double clicking on which will take the DVD drive to the desired action. You can download them by clicking on the link.

And finally the video

Hello! In times of high-speed Internet and large volumes of flash drives, such a note may seem belated, but it’s never too late to know about it. Imagine that your disk drive does not open... what should you do?

What to do if the drive cannot be opened?

First, we need to figure out: what was the reason that the CD drive began to ignore us and, perhaps, decided to keep the disc for itself!

The most common reason is a very worn disk that the drive cannot read correctly, as a result of which the entire computer begins to slow down... and the drive still does not respond to pressing a button. What to do in this case?

If the drive does not open, then the very first thing to do is try to remove it programmatically. Go to Explorer and right-click on the CD drive and select “Eject”

Unfortunately, this trick does not help very often, so the next step is to restart the computer. If you were unable to extract it using the first method, then when rebooting it is better to try to remove the disk from the drive at the very beginning of the computer boot - then there will be a high probability that this will be successful... otherwise there is a possibility that the drive will again hang with a glitchy disk and hang in the bargain the entire system, which again brings you back to the question: What to do if the drive does not open?

If the first two options did not help you, then there is a proven method that ordinary users rarely know about. Any disk drive has a small round hole... we’ll talk about its purpose now.

About ten years ago, when kiosks with discs were very popular, and the drives were not particularly reliable, it was not uncommon for a disc to fly right into a CD-ROM, and open it standard means system was simply impossible, but in fact this problem was solved very simply!

So, to open the disk drive: turn off the computer, take a paperclip and insert it into the small hole, the paperclip will rest... press a little and the disk tray will open, that's the whole trick.

If a disk in the drive has shattered, it is not enough to simply open it - you will have to disassemble it (don’t be afraid, there’s nothing complicated about it; at the age of 14, with little understanding of computers, I easily did it), but I think the meaning of this decision is clear!
