If you want to break a security camera by shining a lot of light on it, use a very powerful light source. If you do not have the opportunity to verify the effectiveness of the results of your actions (you do not see the image coming from this camera), then direct the light beam onto the lens for as long as possible.

If you want to expose your camera to light for a short time in the absence of an artificial light source, point it at the sun, having previously turned on the mode that allows you to shoot in dark rooms. Please note that it is best not to do this, especially if you have a fairly low-quality one. If this is to create certain photography effects, it is best to use manual parameter settings or special built-in modes.

Do not point your camera lens directly at a bright light source as you may damage the sensor.

Don’t neglect safety and assume that no one is interested in you. There are programs and viruses that can turn on a web camera without your knowledge using its vulnerabilities. You won't notice anything like a light bulb ( Light-emitting diode), which means that the camera is turned on, will not light up, and the data will be quietly sent directly to the attacker’s computer.

Disable the laptop camera as a device. This is a universal method and will work until you turn it on again. Access Control Panel via the Start menu.

In this window, set the view to large icons, and find the device manager.

Find your camera there. Usually it is located in the “Image Processing Devices” item if built-in and in “USB Controllers” if external. Disable it through the context menu by clicking the right mouse button.

All modern laptops or netbooks are equipped with web cameras. By default, these cameras are always on, but more and more device owners want the webcam to be within their control, so they can turn it on and off only when needed.

This desire is due to the fact that some programs, we will not list which ones, are capable of independently controlling web cameras connected to a PC. This state of affairs is fraught with leakage of confidential information. Agree, you probably wouldn’t want your interlocutor, let’s say on Skype, to be able to watch you while communicating, without your consent. Moreover, fraudulent schemes for obtaining confidential information and spying on PC users are growing and progressing. So, how to avoid this, how to disable the webcam on a laptop or netbook? Today we will tell you how to do this using standard Windows tools.

Disabling the webcam from the keyboard

Manufacturers of laptops equipped with cameras often add a special button (with a corresponding design) to the keyboard. More precisely, they do not add a button, but provide a standard key with an additional function - disable or enable the webcam. Look at the keyboard of your mobile PC, and if you see a button, say F5, and an additional camera icon on it, then it is intended to control the laptop’s built-in camera.

If the keyboard of your device does not have such a button, which was discussed above, then you can disable the webcam on your laptop programmatically, using the “Device Manager” tool. This is done as follows.

1. Press the “Pause” key on your laptop keyboard and while holding it down, press the “Win” key.
2. Click on the “Device Manager” item in the menu that opens and then find and expand the “Imaging Devices” item.
3. Right-click on the corresponding webcam that you want to disable (in our case it is LenovoEasyCamera), then in the context menu that opens, click on “Disable”, then on “Yes” and close all windows.

That's all. Now, when you need to reactivate the webcam, it will be enough to repeat all the steps described above, but instead of “Disable” in the context menu you will need to select “Enable”.

If your built-in camera does not work correctly, you connect an external one and try to use it. However, you won't always be able to do this right away. The reason for this is that the built-in camera is the first priority of the system, and it is it that blocks the use of an external one. In this case, the only way out is to turn it off.

It's simple - you just need to disconnect the camera cable or completely remove it from the laptop. Yes, most likely you will refuse this method, but keep in mind: the monitor frame is removed after unscrewing the bolts hidden under the rubber plugs.

But what if you lack experience or recklessness with courage? We cannot physically disable the camera, but there is always a software way. Let's talk about him.

The easiest thing in this situation is to simply disable the driver.

Step 1. Open Device Manager. To do this, use the system search or the required line on the left side of the “System Properties” window.

Find the section with video devices. It is usually located towards the end of the list of devices. Unfold it. Most likely, you will see only one sub-item - “Integrated webcam”.

Step 3. Call the context menu for this line. Our choice is the “Disable” and “Delete” items. The choice depends on whether you want to use this camera in the future. If you want, turn it off. No - delete it. Ready!

Note! A similar action can be done by simply opening the “Devices and Printers” section from the system “Control Panel” or simply from the “Start” menu.

This operating system is gaining momentum. It differs from older versions not only in a set of new functions, but also in a different perception of everything that is done on your computer.

This also affected our topic of conversation today. Yes, the previous method, about Windows 7, has not gone away, it is performed in exactly the same way. But there is another way, simpler.

Step 1. Head to System Preferences. They can be called up using the corresponding button in the Start menu.

Step 1. We need the isight disabler script. By this name, typed into any search engine, you can find the script you are looking for.

Step 2. After running the script, you will see a small window with two buttons - turn on the webcam and turn it off.

Is Webcam Spying Really a Threat?

In 2009, a student sued his school after discovering that the school was secretly taking photographs of him through an issued laptop (a subsequent legal investigation revealed that the school had collected 56,000 photographs of students without their knowledge or consent). In 2013, researchers showed that they could activate the webcam on MacBooks without an indicator light, something previously thought to be impossible. A former FBI agent confirmed that not only is it possible, but that they've been doing it for years.

In 2013, we learned from Edward Snowden that the NSA was using some software to gain access to cameras on iPhones and BlackBerrys. In 2014, again thanks to Snowden, we learned that the NSA has a variety of tools at its disposal for remote video monitoring using a webcam. Also a few years ago, many computers were infected with BlackShades, this malware allowed criminals to steal passwords and banking credentials; hack social media accounts; access to documents, photographs, and other computer files; record all keystrokes; activate webcams; etc.

It would be easier if only the NSA used these tools, but everything has become so simple that even an experienced user can connect to your webcam! Therefore, the threat of spying on you via a webcam exists.

What can be done?

1.Use an antivirus: An antivirus must be installed on your computer and it is advisable to constantly update its database. Although it will not save you from many types of spying and malware, it will still protect you a little. Also, even if you have a good antivirus installed, scan your computer at least once a month using (there are paid versions, but the free ones are enough for a one-time scan!). These tools will rid your computer of a lot of junk and help you be more or less safe!

2.Disconnect the camera from the network: if your camera is not built-in and connects to the device via USB, just unplug it, and when you need to use it, plug it in again. There is also an option to turn it towards the wall when not in use.

3. Close it: if, for example, you have a laptop with a built-in camera, you can cover it with something, here let your imagination run wild. You can use some kind of clothespin, a leaf and much more; in general, now on the market you can find a special latch for webcams. Train yourself to close your webcam when you're not using it!

4.Disable the webcam through Device Manager: in the search bar or in the Run menu (Run is called with the Win+R keys) write the command devmgmt.msc and press Enter (in Windows 8.1 and 10, you can right-click the Start menu and select Device Manager).

Find "Image processing devices" at the very bottom => open them => right-click on the camera and select "Disable".

To enable the camera if necessary, go to the device manager again => right-click on the camera => select “enable”.

This method is not ideal, it is not fast, and it does not guarantee that now no one except you will turn on the camera.

There is also an option to disable the camera via Bios, but not all devices support this method and it is not very convenient! Conclusion: the easiest way to protect yourself from hidden shooting is to cover the webcam with something, or if it is connected via USB, turn it off when not in use!
