We tell you why smart watches came to the ticking luxury market and occupied their niche in it

The fashion for smart watches entered the world of premium timepieces three years ago. Then, at the largest thematic exhibition in Basel, Switzerland, several reputable manufacturers announced the release of watches, which had previously been quite difficult to imagine in their assortment.

However, due to the fact that the barrier to entry into this segment was initially incredibly high, the competition turned out to be beyond the reach of many. But by 2018, the market had formed a clear pool of figures developing in the area of smart luxury with purely positive dynamics.

Of course, first and foremost among them is the brand, which by 2017 had already prepared the second generation of the Connected collection for its audience. Unlike previous models of the family, now the new items are released in a new modular design.

Its main attractive feature was that the user could independently select combinations of not only straps, clasps and lugs, but also, in fact, the type of watch itself: electronic or mechanical (for example, three-hand or s, certified by COSC).

The company chose an appropriate slogan for the concept of “fast fashion,” “See Now, Buy Now,” which perfectly emphasizes the avant-garde spirit of TAG Heuer from the time of the revolutionary Mikrograph and the brand’s proximity to the consumer, but now with an emphasis on electronic technology.

Customization as a lifestyle

Naturally, like any smart watch, the new collection was initially aimed at a youth audience. Therefore, it will be necessary to note that marketers have worked out an excellent strategy for introducing products to the market.

Firstly, the most prominent representatives of the creative environment today were invited to be among the ambassadors embodying the modern spirit of the Connected collection: musicians, DJs, popularizers of street art.

Alec Monopoly - graffiti artist and TAG Heuer ambassador

Our interview with one of them, artist Alec Monopoly, who personally painted several hours at an event at MAMM, can be found here.

Secondly, Connected 45 immediately after entering the market starred in a Hollywood blockbuster. And what, if not cinema, increases popularity?

On the set of the movie “Kingsman: The Golden Circle”: the main character Gary “Eggsy” Price played by Taron Egerton wears a TAG Heuer Connected Modular 45. Image: kinopoisk.ru

The watch was used as the main spy tool in the film “Kingsman: The Golden Circle,” which was produced by Marv Films and 20th Century Fox. The film premiered on September 22, 2017. And, like any long-running project, this plot is clearly designed for more than one episode.

Smart luxury: masculine and graceful

If the Swiss watch manufacturer is responsible for watch parts (in the production of which exclusively high-quality materials are used: gold, ceramics, titanium), as well as their assembly and final finishing, then electronic components and software are the area of responsibility of the two largest players in the IT market, based in the famous Silicon Valley. This is about Intel companies and Google.

Thus, all accessories of the second generation (unlike the first, additionally equipped with a GPS module) run on Intel Atom Z34XX processors, coupled with batteries with a capacity of 410 mAh, providing them with up to 30 hours of continuous operation. The functionality is provided by the Android Wear 2.0 operating system.

In addition to the 45mm case diameter, the manufacturer has released another one, designed for more sophisticated wrists. The 41mm Connected Modular has improved the following characteristics: AMOLED display 390 x 390 now has a resolution of 326 PPI (versus the previous 287) and high brightness (maximum 350 nits). The memory card capacity has increased to 8 gigabytes, and RAM memory- up to 1 gigabyte.

Models with a case diameter of 41 millimeters (presented so far in the form of seven standard versions) operate on the basis operating system Android Wear and are compatible with Android 4.4, iOS 9 software. Like the Connected 45, they are up to 50 meters and equipped GPS system and an NFC sensor for paying for purchases.

We are already accustomed to the fact that smart watches have become a part of our lives. Now it’s time to get used to the fact that they can be not only practical, but also luxurious.

We've been coveting the Tag Heuer Connected Modular 45 since it left our wrists early last year. But for some, luxury, customizable Android watch Wear were a little over the top. Too big, too heavy, just too expensive. Check out the Tag Heuer Connected Modular 41 smartwatch. Not only is it smaller and slimmer than the Tag Heuer Connected Modular 45, but this model comes with upgraded screen and technology - not to mention the smartwatch comes at a slightly lower price , By at least, for the starting model. And these smart watches cost from 90,000 rubles, they are still three times more expensive than regular ones Android watch Wear, and while you get a very high quality screen on this model, it's still pretty much the same old watch.

Tag is very pleased with the performance of his smartwatch so far, but there is no doubt that the Modular 41 will open it up to an even wider audience.

The first thing to note about this watch is the size, it is smaller than all the other watches from model range Tag, focused on module 39, we expected the following. Thus, the smartwatch is designed as a unisex watch to fit different wrists.

The case is smooth, cold titanium, on touch screen There is a flat sapphire crystal that is scratch resistant and the steel frame is beautifully finished with the 0-60 chronograph numbers and indices. The smartwatch is water resistant up to 50 m - convenient. There are nine interchangeable straps to choose from, with three new styles: pink, blue and white leather, all with a rubber base for comfort.

Next to the superbly finished crown - with the Tag logo - on the right edge of the watch case, you'll find a microphone for interacting with Google Assistant - a great place to place it. Plus, you'll find the all-important "Swiss Made" right on the lower case.
As before, you can swap out the lugs as well as the straps, even if they are swapped out on the Caliber 5's mechanical watch module, making it a truly customizable modular watch. The bands are easy to pop out and turn on once you know how: the metal tabs detach from them. Just trust us - don't read the instruction manual unless you want to get lost in the "perpendicular" ridiculous broadcast and deal with "pull objects".

The Tag Heuer Connected Modular 41 smartwatch is luxuriously weighty and at 13.2mm thick, it's thinner than the 13.75mm Tag Heuer Connected Modular45, but still looks quite meaty next to it. Apple smart watch Watch Series 3 - 11.4 mm.

That said, both of our reviewers who wore the Modular 41 found it to be somewhat awkward to wear—perhaps down to the shape of the lugs, or perhaps the smaller strap that tends to pinch your wrist. Of course, this will depend on personal fit, but we recommend trying it out in person before purchasing to check for yourself.

The Modular 41's updated screen, probably the biggest difference between the two models, places it up there and just behind the LG Watch Sport's 1.38-inch, 348-pixel display. The 1.2-inch, fully circular AMOLED screen is great - it's plenty bright at max. 350 nits, which would be visible from the outside when daylight and has a resolution of 390x390, which works at 326 pixels.

Both text and animation look crisp and very nice, especially on the specially tuned, customizable sides of the watch, which show all the pixels well. To be honest, I'm a little let down by some of Android Wear's dull interfaces, but not much has been done at this point.

On the Tag Heuer Connected Modular 45, we noticed some screen distortion around the edge of the display, but found nothing similar on the Tag Heuer Connected Modular 41 smartwatch, suggesting that Tag has addressed this particular issue.

When the model smart watch Tag Heuer Connected Modular 45 launched in early 2017, Android Wear 2.0 was a big deal. It's now standard, and it does everything Android Wear needs - there's NFC for Android Pay, which, as we've already noted, is still lacking on the fashion and luxury watch fair (cough, Fossil Group), if not on the sporty tech side.
As we already mentioned, the Tag Heuer Connected Modular 41 smartwatch has Google Assistant and a microphone that perfectly heard our voice. You can download apps directly to your smartwatch from Google Play Store, although there is only Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, no standalone 4G.

The Heuer Studio tag for selecting exclusive, built-in watches and customizing them should be popular - it's easy to use and fun to tinker with the base, dials, etc. Unless you really spoil it, all watch curators are both analogue and digital styles - enhance general form luxury.
You can also choose a personal photo as the face of the watch. You can also store music on the watch itself, and here's another tag update - 4GB to 8GB of storage could really make this feature usable, perhaps for runners.

The modular 41 is more powerful than its larger predecessor, powered by a 1GB Intel Cloverdale Peak processor random access memory to play. The screen is also very responsive, which we really appreciated after double-swiping on the smaller Watch screen, and performance in and out of apps is stellar. None of the random sluggishness we saw on the 45. It's nice to see Tag tweaking the internals every time they release a model.

Tag Heuer Connected Modular 41 has GPS, which means the watch will be able to track your workouts outdoors. You can choose from Android Big Wear apps such as Strava or Endomondo, but tested with Google apps Fit.

Launching the app was fairly smooth, and the Tag Heuer actually locked onto the GPS satellite faster than the Garmin Fenix 5 it was tested with. However, over a 10km run, Tag Heuer only tracked 9.1km - which isn't brilliant.

It wasn't the most comfortable to work with either, as the metal body is quite weighty - which is where the epic build quality comes back to haunt you. Serious runners will have a proper GPS watch anyway, but we expect distances to be recorded correctly in the future.

One pretty big change between the modular 45 and this device is to reduce the size of the battery 410 mAh to 345mAh. Now, the modular 41's screen is smaller - 1.2-inch compared to the 45's 1.39-inch - so one might assume that's why Zenith was confident it wouldn't impact endurance too much.

Still, we believe that this tag burned out quite quickly during normal use (not in battery saving mode) and the battery on the smartwatch will last for a maximum of one day. Plus, it still takes about two hours to charge; a charger is included.

After months of anticipation for an ambitious project, Tag Heuer has finally pulled back the curtain on its debut smartwatch at an exclusive event in New York. We will share with you our very first impressions and hard facts in this Tag Heuer Connected review.

general information

The Tag Heuer Connected smartwatch claims to be a luxury smart gadget on Android Wear, and also features Tag's collaboration with Google in the development process. In addition, Tag Heuer Connected can be called the first watch that can boast an Intel-based chipset. In this review you will find out all the characteristics, important details, price and find photos of the device.

Appearance

Perhaps there is no need to beat around the bush here: the Tag Heuer Connected is a truly beautiful smartwatch. Taking a quick look at the case, you may mistake the gadget for a traditional watch from this company, but upon closer inspection, you will find that the device is much larger.

The thickness of the Tag Heuer Connected is 12.8 mm - to be fair, it is worth noting that this watch is a little thicker than its round competitors on Android Wear - Huawei Watch (11.3 mm) and Moto 360 (11.4 mm). But, despite its external bulkiness, Connected is impressively light (52g), 10% lighter than the LG G Watch R. Such low weight was achieved thanks to the use of grade 2 titanium in the case and the back plate made of plastic.

Also worth noting is the interesting and very practical clasp.

A black rubber strap is included as standard, but other color options can be purchased separately.

The watch is very convenient and comfortable to wear (especially when you compare it with the Asus ZenWatch 2).

Screen

In fact, there is something to complain about here. In general, the display is not bad - transflective, contrasty even in bright light, with sapphire glass, a resolution of 360x360 and a pixel density of 240 ppi.

But for $1,500, it's only natural that you want the best of everything, including the display, but the Tag Heuer Connected screen isn't exceptional: the displays of the Huawei Watch (400x400 pixels and 286 ppi) and the upcoming LG Watch Urbane Second Edition (480x480 pixels and 348 ppi) significantly exceed its parameters.

Of course, we had to cut down the parameters to improve battery life, but you must agree - simple user little concern about the manufacturer's problems, but the fact remains: when buying Tag Heuer, you don't have to expect the best display.

Functions

From the information that the Tag Heuer Connected watch is based on Android Wear, it can be understood that the functionality will be similar to most watches on this operating system. Available voice search, Services Google Maps, Fit, Translate and all the key applications ported to this platform.
