Recovery can be divided into:

1. Stock Recovery ( stock or in other words native recovery) – provided by default by Android device manufacturers;
2. Custom Recovery ( custom or custom recovery) is a third-party user enhancement that includes more features and more functionality.

If you want to install a newer version of the Android operating system, then Stock Recovery allows you to install only official versions from the manufacturer, and you cannot install third-party firmware through this recovery menu.

To install a newer version of Android OS you will need Custom Recovery, for which there are hundreds of different firmware and versions. But at the same time, you need to take into account the “hardware” characteristics of your device, since perhaps your smartphone or tablet simply cannot handle the power of the new firmware.

You cannot find the recovery menu in the smartphone settings. Recovery Mode is located deeper in the system. To enter the recovery menu you need to:

1. Turn off your smartphone
2. Press and hold a certain combination of buttons ( For each tablet or smartphone, the login combination may be different).

There is no single way to enter the recovery menu; each manufacturer may have its own entry options. Below are the options for key combinations to enter the recovery menu. Find your brand of smartphone or tablet in the table, turn off the device and press the appropriate key combination.

Types of custom Recovery

Custom Recovery is a modified recovery menu with which you can install new versions of the Android operating system.

There are 2 types of custom recovery:

1. TeamWin Recovery (TWRP).
2. ClockworkMod Recovery (CWM).

TeamWin Recovery is a custom recovery (not official) that can be found for almost all Android devices. This modification is distinguished not only by its greater capabilities compared to the stock version, but also by the presence of touch controls in the recovery menu.

ClockworkMod Recovery is an analogue of the above-mentioned TeamWin Recovery, it also has advanced capabilities and there are versions for most smartphones.

With Recovery on Android you can: create a backup copy of your data or reset all settings to factory settings. In custom recovery, you can install a newer firmware version on your smartphone or tablet.

Navigation through the menu is carried out using the volume up and down keys, and selection is made with the power/lock button. On new devices, CWM and stock recovery can be touch-sensitive.

Lenovo

With your Lenovo smartphone turned off, press and hold at the same time:

• Volume “+” and “ON”

If it doesn't work, use:

• Volume “+”, Volume “–” together with the power button

Nexus, Pixel

If you have a Google Nexus or Pixel tablet or smartphone, you will first have to go into Fastboot mode, and from there go to recovery. To do this, hold:

HTC

Use a combination:

• Volume “Down” + start

On older Samsung tablets:

Meizu

Meizu smartphones do not have the usual non-touch recovery, but there is a menu from which you can install the firmware or reset the settings to factory settings.

LG

1. Hold down the Volume Down and Power keys until the LG logo appears.
2. Then quickly release them and hold them again.

With your Xiaomi phone turned off, hold these keys:

Sony

Many Sony phones do not have stock Recovery installed (you will have to install TWRP - there is a link to the FAQ at the beginning of the article) and only some models have it. You can log in using one of the combinations (try one at a time):

• “ON” + Volume “Minus”
• “ON” + short press Volume “Up” until the SONY logo appears, then quickly press Volume “Plus” again
• “ON” + volume down + volume up

Huawei, Honor

For phones and tablets from the Chinese manufacturer Huawei or Honor:

• Volume "Down" + Power

Motorola

We put the device into recovery mode via a computer: a universal method

Connect your Android device to your computer via USB. Launch ADB and enter in the command line:

Using a useful application

In order for you to be able to enter the recovery menu of your phone from your PC, first take the time to find and download a special program to your computer that makes this possible. But even before that, look for the “USB Debugging” option in the settings of your device - you will find it in the section for developers. Then download AdbRun on your PC. And from there, knowing the commands for the console, you can control some functions of the recovery menu.

Now, if suddenly the recovery menu on Android does not open in the usual way on the phone itself, you can connect the device to the computer using a USB cable and control it from there.
