When you develop a website, you need to check it for compatibility with different versions Internet Explorer. On the other hand, you may simply end up on a page that is not compatible with the latest version of Microsoft's browser. In such cases, Internet Explorer 9 Compatibility Mode will help you.
If you come to a page that is not displayed correctly, then first try turning on compatibility mode (most often this helps, example in Figure 1).

When you visit a site that does not explicitly indicate that it is compatible with Internet Explorer 9, a button appears in the address bar. Click this button to enable compatibility mode (the page will refresh after clicking this button). To turn off compatibility mode, click this button again. After this, the site will always be displayed in compatibility mode, and the button will look like this.
If the site developers update the site and explicitly indicate that the site is compatible with Internet Explorer 9, the compatibility mode will automatically turn off. To view compatibility mode options, click - menu Service- line Compatibility View Options. If you want to delete a site, select the site in the list Sites added to Compatibility View and click on the button Delete.

To add a site to the list, enter the site URL in the line Add this website and press Add. If you want to always work in compatibility mode (for example, you work only on a local network, where web sites were developed with the eighth or seventh version of IE in mind), then check the box Show all websites in Compatibility View. In the parameter Show intranet sites in Compatibility View By default there is a checkbox, it tells the browser to open enterprise sites in IE7 compatibility mode.
If you want to enable compatibility mode not for the eighth version of the browser, then click , the developer panel will appear at the bottom of the window (Figure 2).

Select Document mode and select the desired browser version from the drop-down list. In order for the browser to be recognized on sites as a different version, click Browser mode and select the desired version.
The Internet Explorer 9 team promised that IE users would be able to browse the entire Internet. I think they succeeded.
IE compatibility mode is an option designed to display a page in the browser as it would look in an older version of it. The reason why this mode appeared is that the differences between the way older versions of IE rendered web pages were so great that when new versions were released, many sites no longer displayed correctly.
To enable this mode, there is a special button located at the end of the address bar:
You can also enable compatibility mode in the “Developer Tools” panel (turned on by pressing F12), “Browser Mode” menu.
In IE9, this menu allows you to select different compatibility modes: IE7, IE8, and IE9 Compatibility View. Selecting one of these modes determines what User-Agent value will be sent to the server, how conditional comments will be read, and the document mode.
User-Agent is a string that the browser sends to the server in order to identify its version, as well as the operating system version. Therefore, if the browser mode is IE7, then the server will receive data that it is IE7, if IE8, then IE8, etc. If you select the IE9 compatibility view mode, then information will also be sent to the User-Agent that the version is IE7. If you need the site to always open in a certain compatibility mode, you can set the User-Agent via the tag :

If you specify a version from 5 to 9 here, the page will be forced to be displayed in the mode of this browser version. You can also set the version to “Edge”:

This means that the document will be opened in the most accessible browser mode, that is, if the browser used is IE8, it will be IE8 mode, if IE9, then IE9, etc. In this case, the Compatibility View button next to the address bar will not be available.

<p>You can also control the compatibility view mode in the browser through the “Tools” -> “Compatibility View Options” menu.</p>

<p>Even if the developers have explicitly stated that a page is compatible with the latest version of IE, and the Compatibility View button is not available, you can use this menu to add a site to the list of those that should always be displayed in Compatibility View.</p>

<p>Internet Explorer is, perhaps, the only browser that absolutely all Windows users have had to deal with at least once in their lives: it’s not for nothing that Microsoft supplies it with every version of the operating system completely free of charge. At the same time, of course, this software product is far from ideal in its characteristics, but there is still hope for the best. Taking a closer look at the updated IE 11, it’s easy to notice that the latest development looks much better than earlier versions: you have a brand new interface and improved web page loading speed.</p>
<p>But some sites are still displayed incorrectly: either the images are stretched, or the text is scattered chaotically across the entire field, or the control menu moves from the usual point A to point B. In principle, the way out of this situation is simple - just reconfigure the mode in Internet Explorer 11 compatibility so that the problem resolves itself. But what configuration options can be offered?</p>

<h2>How to set up your browser?</h2>
<p>In principle, there are not many ways to configure compatibility mode in Internet Explorer 11: just enable or disable the corresponding parameter for the site. Another question is when and how does each of these options apply to Windows?</p>
<p>With the first part of it, everything seems to be clear - we enable / disable it in the event that the site elements are not displayed at all or loaded incorrectly. Accordingly, if compatibility mode was enabled for the site, you need to disable it for the problem to disappear and vice versa. As for the second part of the question, everything is somewhat more complicated here.</p>
<h2>How to connect parameters?</h2>
<p>Based on the experience of using previous versions of the standard Windows browser, it is easy to guess that you can enable compatibility mode in Internet Explorer 11 by adjusting the viewing options in the “Tools” section. The only catch is that finding it the first time is not so easy, because in the 11th version the standard file menu is hidden and, in order to “reanimate” it, you will have to use one of the available tricks, namely:</p>

<p>What's the result? Less than 2 minutes - and the compatibility mode in the 11th version of IE is turned on!</p>
<h2>How to disable the option?</h2>
<p>If the site stops functioning normally due to the compatibility mode enabled in IE 11, you will have to resort to one of the methods to cancel this parameter. First of all, you can arm yourself with the reverse method, i.e., turn it on and turn it off. In this case, to configure the combined mode, open the “Tools” menu, select the “Viewing Options...” item in it, and then find in the list of sites added to the exception the one with which problems are encountered when viewing, click on it with the mouse and click the “Delete” button ":</p>

<p>If the problematic site is not in the list, it is very likely that it is included in the standard Windows lists. In this case, to solve the problem with loading it, you will need to uncheck the “Use lists...” item in the “Viewing options...” box.</p>

<p>In addition, clearing the browser history for Windows, that is, deleting the history of sites viewed in it, will help solve the problem of disabling the parameter. To do this, with Internet Explorer open in version 11, press Alt, then click the “Tools” tab in the menu that appears and select the appropriate task from the proposed list. Next, check the box next to “Journal” and click the “Delete” button:</p>

<p>Sometimes a website may look unusual in Internet Explorer. Images are not visible, menus are misplaced, and text fields are scattered haphazardly. This may be due to an incompatibility between Windows Internet Explorer on your computer and the site itself. When a site is not compatible with Internet Explorer, a View in Compatibility Mode button appears in the address bar. Once enabled, Internet Explorer Compatibility View will automatically show you every time you visit a site.</p>

This list includes sites designed for older or different versions of browsers, sites that use Adobe Flash Player, and other options to help improve your web browsing experience. <p>A situation has developed around Internet Explorer that can no longer be seen with any other browser - the range of versions starts with 6.0 and ends with 9.0. The reasons for using outdated versions can be completely different.</p>
<ul><li>Internet Explorer is built into the Windows operating system and inexperienced users are not even aware of the existence of an alternative.</li>
<li>Enterprise users with limited access cannot update the version or change the browser themselves.</li>
<li>IE is updated to a new version through the Windows Update system, which is often disabled for security reasons or to reduce Internet traffic.</li>
<li>Some applications, for example banking ones, can be “tailored” to work only for a specific version of IE.</li>
<li>Due to the inertia of thinking, when the user likes the program with which he is accustomed to working.</li>
</ul><p>Microsoft itself strongly encourages the transition to new versions of Internet Explorer and in 2010 stopped supporting IE6 and IE7.</p>
<p>As for website developers, such a large set of versions is a real problem for them. Each version of IE contains its own unique bugs, web page rendering features, and does not support certain CSS properties. One of the radical solutions to the problem is the developer’s complete refusal to support certain versions of IE. Thus, some Google services, the site vkontakte.ru, when you try to access them through IE6, issue a warning that you are using an outdated browser. On the other hand, some online store developers fight for every browser, believing that even if 2% use a certain browser, abandoning it will lead to the loss of 2% of customers.</p>
<p>Due to the fact that each version of IE can display a site differently, the developers of IE8 were faced with a difficult dilemma - this version was so different from the previous one that when viewed through IE8, most of the sites “crumbled”. Ultimately, the decision was made to add a compatibility view mode; To quickly switch sites to this mode, a special button has been added near the address bar (Fig. 1.6a). In fact, when switching to this mode, the browser began to work as version 7.0. In IE9 they went even further and in it you can already switch to IE8 or IE7 (Fig. 1.6b).</p>

<p>The abundance of IE versions is further complicated by the fact that browser versions can operate in several modes, giving rise to a large number of combinations that the developer must take into account. Starting from version 8.0, switching modes in the browser is done through the Developer Tools ( <span>Tools > Developer Tools</span>), which is easier to call by pressing the F12 key. This tool has two menu items associated with modes: Browser Mode (Fig. 1.7) and Document Mode.</p>

<p>The browser mode selection determines the following:</p>
<ul><li>the User-Agent string that the browser sends to the server is called “user agent” in Microsoft;</li>
<li>a version for conditional comments, which Microsoft calls a “version vector”;</li>
<li>document mode.</li>
</ul><p>The user agent is a text string sent to the server to identify the browser, its version, and operating system. The User-Agent value determines not only the browser, but also search spiders and network robots. A list of possible User-Agent values and parsing of the string can be found on the website http://www.useragentstring.com. Conditional comments are actively used in the layout to eliminate layout differences between IE and other browsers.
