The web interface is quite sparse; it allows you to view the broadcast from the camera in two modes (for PC and mobile) and provides access to settings. And everything would be fine, but there is no way to connect to the camera via SSH/Telnet, but I really want to. The only setting that seems close to this is called Advanced->Terminal, but there is something incomprehensible written there about the RS-485 interface and the PELCO-D protocol, in general it’s clearly missing, the camera only has an RJ-45 socket and a plug for nutrition.

Analysis showed the presence of unsoldered and unused pins. In particular, an unsoldered block of four larger pins is the USB-host, and a slightly smaller one is the UART. The unconnected block is used to connect additional peripherals, which can be: SD card, signal output for relays, microphone input, speaker output, outputs for controlling camera rotation servos. In my case, none of this is provided in the camera. By the way, the USB host supplies 3.3V to power the device (the camera is powered by 12V) and is used to connect WiFi dongles or a 3G modem. The firmware I uploaded supports three WiFi chipsets: MT7601U, RT5370 and RT2870.

At random we find which pins in the UART block are responsible for RX and TX, we take the ground from a reliable source, the speed is 115200, the rest is default. We see the download log, we are happy, we see a prompt to log in, we try all the known standard login combinations, we are sad. According to available data, we are trying to find the firmware for this camera, but for some reason it is not working. We return to U-BOOT and agree to interrupt the download.

The additional bootloader functionality provided is impressive. In general, you can download the firmware via tftp, unpack it, make the necessary changes, pack it back and download via tftp. The camera has loaded, the password is correct, the console is available to us, but only via UART, but we want it over the network. In the archive with a backup copy of the settings, you can find the config_debug.ini file and the telnet->tenable option in it, but, unfortunately, the camera did not want to accept changes in this file and reset the setting to default. Having looked at the code of the main camera binary, ipc_server, I saw that this setting simply launches telnetd. But he's not there. And it’s not necessary, I thought. We will immediately install SSH, or to be more precise, dropbear. We quickly assemble a cross-compiler for ARM and compile the daemon.

Since the system on the camera uses uLibc, it would be correct to build dropbear using this library, but I didn’t want to bother too much, there’s a lot of free space on the camera (more than two megabytes), so for now I did a static build, and brought glibc with me. You can configure DDNS. There is support for standard ONVIF. There is support for MJPEG, but it was not possible to get the correct link to it. Can detect motion in specified regions and upload photos to FTP or send notifications by Email. The video stream can be received via rtsp, the first stream is located at /11. Out of the box, the camera supports several services for streaming video from the camera. But the funny thing is that by default one of the services is enabled, but this is not visible in the web interface. The only reassurance is that the service does not work. There is also one link to the manufacturer’s website (Shenzhen Hichip Vision Technology Co.,LTD), but I haven’t really figured it out yet, but for some reason it uses HTTP Basic Authentication: ZTEALE234=2opWae to access www.hipcam.net

While the camera was disassembled, I noticed that the processor was heating up to 80 degrees, and it did not have any heatsink. During testing, I glued a small radiator, but its dimensions did not allow me to leave it, so I made several petals from copper terminals and additionally connected them with a copper wire to the existing IR illumination radiators. It turned out a little scary, but it works and doesn’t get hot at all.

On the day of Black Friday sales, November 25, 2011, among other things, I bought two IP video cameras for $25. Now such a camera costs about $45.

The camera allows you to view and record video with a resolution of 640x480 pixels, it can rotate up and down and in a circle almost 180 degrees. There is switchable infrared illumination, sound transmission and a built-in speaker.

The camera connects to the local network and is powered by 5 volts from the included adapter.

The adapter plug is Chinese, so you will need an adapter.

Video viewing and camera control occurs via the web interface, and there are three options:

1. Mobile interface. The simplest and most convenient to view.

In this interface, you can move the camera, set the camera in one of five pre-configured positions (presets), and allow or disable the backlight to turn on when the light level decreases.

2. Advanced interface. Allows you to configure camera settings.

3. ActiveX interface (works only in Internet Explorer).

In addition to all of the above, it allows you to record video from the camera with sound, as well as transmit sound to the camera (it becomes another sound card in the system).

Camera system parameters are configured in a separate screen.

By default, the camera has the address 192.168.1.99:99. It is pre-registered on the 88safe.com DDNS service. There is a sticker with the DDNS name and password on the bottom of the camera. Moreover, the camera can work with several DDNS services, including dyndns.com. This allows you to access the camera via the Internet.

The Internet connection must have a real IP address, and if it is also static, DDNS will not be needed. In order to see the camera behind the router from the Internet, you need to configure port forwarding on the router. For example, you can specify that port 8009 is forwarded to the address 192.168.1.99 and port 99. In this case, to access the camera via the Internet, you will need to go to the router address indicating port 8009 if the address is static or to the address given by the DDNS server and port 8009 , if the address is dynamic.

In addition to viewing through a browser, the camera can send frames by e-mail or ftp based on the movement of the object. In addition, the camera can send frames to FTP once every specified number of seconds. It was this opportunity that was used for bird broadcasting. Each frame has a unique and unpredictable name, consisting of the camera name, date and time of the photo.

In order for these frames to be used, one of my blog readers wrote a script that renames the newest frame, deletes all old frames and updates the picture every five seconds.

The camera sees perfectly in the infrared range. Apparently this is why the bright green foliage of trees turns out purple - it reflects IR well.

I did not regret spending fifty dollars - the cameras came in very handy when I found a wagtail nest on the balcony and I think they will come in handy again.
