    Reviews

“I have known since childhood that people ski. True, in those days, this sport was not as wildly popular as it is now, there were competitions, but not for us, there was equipment, but also not for us. I rode regular skis with my parents, and ran in competitions at school and in college. But what I liked most about this vacation was getting to some small hill and rolling around it from all sides.

My acquaintance with the mountain variety of skis began by accident. We were visiting our old friends and looking through old photos of their skiing holidays. They talked a lot about their car trips to Finland. The conversation smoothly flowed into the proposal to “try.” We talked and parted ways. And a year later we agreed and decided to go to Finland for the children’s spring holidays.

Friends abandoned the idea of going by car - the road was too tiring and long, and through a travel agency we booked a trip to a place called Salla.

The way to get to the place of future training was chosen quite unusual. He looked like this. From Moscow we took the Murmansk train to the city of Kandalaksha. This part of the journey is practically unattractive: anyone who spent more than 24 hours on the train will understand what I mean. After 36 hours, we were met at the local train station by a car - a small minibus of one of the local residents. The fact is that about a year before this moment, an additional checkpoint was opened near Kandalaksha. It’s called Salla, and local residents make money by transporting tourists from Kandalaksha to nearby Finnish holiday destinations. The trip from the station to the border control was also unremarkable - local roads are no better than any regional roads in winter, a lot of snow and ice, hillocks, etc.

We were the first at the border control on this working day (the checkpoint is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.). Local border guards, in order to relieve boredom and practice, launched an adorable local spaniel into our car and asked us to unload all the luggage onto a conveyor belt for inspection. 4 pairs of skis, 4 pairs of boots, a bunch of bags with food and things. Our pleas were heard by the border guard - he selected several bags at random, which we had to carry to the conveyor. From the border to Salla there are still 60 kilometers, which we rode at a fairly brisk pace (80 km/h, speeding is subject to heavy fines). Thanks to the driver, on the way he took us to the nearest supermarket, where we bought food for the week.

About five hours after unloading from the train, we found ourselves in the town of Salla. We were accommodated in a cozy log house located right on the slope. Kitchen, drying cabinet, fireplace and sauna inside (conveniences too).

On the same day we went to see and try out the local rental equipment (I didn’t have my own equipment at that time). There wasn't much choice. Boots were a particular problem. After an hour and a half of communication, skis and boots were rented. And the instructor was hired the next day at 8 am.

The meeting with the instructor took place near the rental, communication took place in English, which was not native to either him or us. Half of the information came to be transmitted on the fingers. 10 minutes of mastering the bindings and skis, and we were taken to the lift. I don’t know whether we impressed the instructor too athletically, or whether this is their methodology, but after 10 minutes we found ourselves on the red slope. As a result, the wife, having performed a couple of incredible somersaults, 30 minutes after the start of the training, told the instructor that she was tired and went to our house.

This “training” put her off skiing for two years. As for me, “hunt is greater than captivity” and, having “skated” for an hour with an instructor, I continued the exercise in the company of friends. We moved to the blue track. By evening, having made several mind-blowing encounters with the snowdrifts surrounding the route, I could already slowly descend the slope in large arcs. But one of the problems was that the blue slopes are located on the opposite side of the mountain from our accommodation. So I had to do the last descent again from the red slope. There is no opportunity to go down on a lift there and cannot be, since all the lifts are rope tows (with a T-shaped mop). Having flown a few meters on the next hillock and rounded the lift support in flight, I made a soft landing in a snowdrift about fifty meters from our house and decided to finish my “flight” practice for today.

The next two “flight days” were spent in exercises on the flying (blue) slope without any special incidents. A moderate number of falls into a snowdrift and somersaults over the head, but despite this, there was no desire to take an instructor.

Taking into account the previous days of skiing and rental boots, which were difficult to find a common language with, all sports stores were visited in the “big cities” and, in the end, brand new Salomons were purchased, suitable in size and last. The following days passed without any special incidents; riding in new boots was highly appreciated by our friends. The compliment that I started skating better spilled balm on my calluses.

The evening was spent mostly with a cup of beer in the sauna, which was located in the room, or by the burning fireplace with an interesting book. According to rumors, there were discos in the restaurant in the main building of the resort, but there was no strength to get to them.

The resort cannot boast of the number and variety of slopes, but what is there is well-groomed, clean and well prepared, there are not many people, you don’t have to stand for more than 1.5-2 minutes at the lift.”

“The time in Salla was mostly spent skiing and basking by the fireplace, after a while the days seemed monotonous and Anka and I, armed with 18 euros, went to rent a snowboard :)

Let’s put aside the fact that there was a boorish Muscovite in a fur coat and we only managed to take the board on the second day, let’s get on with the photo report!

I was in a fighting mood, with a firm belief that switching from skis to boards would be as easy as shelling pears!) And what advantages were immediately found: the boots are as comfortable as sneakers, and the weight of the board itself cannot be compared with skis!!! And then the first difficulties appeared!)

It turned out that the worst thing is not even moving down the mountain, but climbing it!!! On skis, just go forward, and then you push the rope between your legs, the board under your feet is trying to go somewhere where it’s not necessary or stand on the edge..brrr, and in general from the outside it doesn’t look elegant and feminine.. .

We were unable to reach the top the first time!)
And when the lift stopped for 10-15 minutes, and I stood in the middle of the mountain in such a splayed state, I actually thought that I would stretch out into the splits and would not straighten my back!...

There were a lot of people on the mountain - snowboarders, but no one wanted to explain how to even ride on this piece of plastic with your legs tied in an awkward position! At first, we learned more about standing on it or falling from it.

And then, after 2 hours of torment, falling, and when the gloves could already be squeezed out, we finally, more or less, rode correctly, and did not scrape snow off the mountain! *how we skiers don’t like snow scrapers, especially when there’s already so little of it*

And after all this, we decided that a skier can also ride a snowboard, but it will be much more convenient if you cut it lengthwise!!!”

Lapland is famous for its ski resorts, but this next one is special. The resort of Salla, located in southern Lapland, is famous for the fact that the world's oldest ski was found here in 1932. It is about 5000 years old, that is, we can say that already in 3000 BC prehistoric people were skiing on the slopes of the Salla hill! And in 2009, Salla became the best ski resort in Finland.

Salla is a municipality with its center in the village of the same name. The Salla region covers an area of 5,800 square kilometers and has a permanent population of about 4.5 thousand people. Just 50 years ago, Salla was inhabited by three times as many people, but the decadent agriculture in these areas forced residents to leave their native lands and go to other regions to seek their fortune. With the development of the tourism business, things in the region's economy have improved significantly. And over time, people pulled back. Now Salla is increasing its economic potential, based primarily on the tourism business.

The Salla ski resort is located 10 kilometers from the village of the same name on the Sallatunturi hill. The proximity of Salla to the Russian border gives a special piquancy to a holiday in this place. Salla is very famous in the world of big-time sports. Already in 1937, downhill and slalom competitions for the Finnish Championship were held here. At this time, most of the now fashionable resorts did not even exist in projects. The resort's glorious historical and sporting past only adds to the pride of Salla.

Salla is located among the largest tracts of untouched forest in Europe, far from large cities and only 20 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle. The beauty of wild nature, which has hardly been touched by human hands, can work wonders. A person becomes more spiritual, the feeling of anxiety and haste leaves him. Here life is leisurely, among these centuries-old forests, silent hills and harsh nature.

Getting to the Salla resort is not difficult; there are several options for this. The first of them is related to air transport. From Moscow or St. Petersburg you need to fly to Helsinki, fortunately this is not difficult, 3 flights depart daily from these cities to the Finnish capital. And then take domestic flights to Kuusamo, the journey takes 1 hour and 20 minutes, or to Rovaniemi, the journey takes 1 hour and 40 minutes, respectively. And then 2 hours by bus and you are already at the resort of Salla.

The second option is to go by train. Again, from Moscow or St. Petersburg several trains depart daily towards Helsinki. In the capital of Finland, you change to the Helsinki-Kemijärvi train and after 9 hours you will be at the Kemijärvi railway station, from which it is only 1 hour and 20 minutes by bus to Salla.

You can combine these two methods to reduce the cost of travel. Fly to the capital of Finland by plane, and then go by train, or vice versa.

Due to the fact that the Salla resort is located near the border with Russia, you can use the new Salla automobile crossing. To cross the border you must have a pre-issued visa. Keep in mind that according to Finnish customs regulations, there is a restriction on the import of gasoline into the country, so don’t rely too much on your own fuel; you’ll still have to buy it here.

If you plan to take a road trip on the way to Salla, try to drive as much of the way as possible through Finland. And the roads are better and look at the landscapes outside the window.

Among the attractions of the Salla ski resort, first of all, is, of course, nature. The nature of the Finnish Arctic is harsh and inaccessible, but this is at first glance. Upon closer acquaintance, you will feel her warm attitude towards you, her beauty, seemingly simple, and on the other hand, the elaborate, cold beauty of the North. There is no such riot of colors here as in the tropical jungle or on the southern islands; there is only one color - white. But there are so many shades hidden in the white cover of the entire nature of the Arctic that there is enough for any tropical island. And when summer gives way to a long winter, everything is covered with the green of dense forests, which alternate with the blue of lakes and fast rivers. Nature alone is enough to make you fall in love with the Salla resort at first sight. And if you add the famous Northern Lights to everything, then all the beauty of tropical resorts fades.

But not only admiring nature is possible at the Salla resort. Still, the main purpose of this resort is winter sports. The resort of Salla is famous for its glorious skiing tradition. This is where alpine skiing originated in Finland. On the slopes of Salla Hill, 70 years ago, the first slalom championship in Finnish history was held. Much water has passed under the bridge since then, but these traditions are only multiplying. During this time, several generations of Finnish athletes were raised, among whom there are many Olympic medalists, European and even world champions. The Salla resort, the first-born of a whole galaxy of Finnish ski resorts, also has a part of the credit for this.

Now, having brought together all the acquired professionalism, the Salla resort offers everyone the opportunity to take advantage of the accumulated experience. The high level of the Salla ski resort is confirmed by dozens of athletes who have chosen the resort's slopes as a training base. The best athletes not only in Finland, but also in many foreign countries train here. Periodically, competitions in many types of alpine skiing, both national and international, are held on the slopes of Salla. In total, Salla has more than 15 slopes with trails. For tourists who are just beginning their acquaintance with winter sports, there are entry-level trails and slopes. The total length of all routes is about 140 kilometers, of which 41 kilometers are illuminated.

In Salla you can go downhill or cross-country skiing, slalom or downhill. For those interested, there are also trails for snowmobiling of any difficulty level. For local flavor, you may be offered a ride on a dog or reindeer sled. Fans of hiking on snow crust can do this with the help of snowshoes. By the way, there are rental points for any equipment, including children's equipment.

For those who have started skiing for the first time or are not yet confident, there is a ski school. In which experienced instructors will teach you how to at least stay on your skis, under their guidance you can make your first descent from the mountain.

The season favorable for skiing in Salla opens at the beginning of November and ends at the beginning of June. But with the end of the winter season, the Salla resort does not close for a break. In summer you can also have a good rest here. All infrastructure, including hotels, shops, tourist centers continue to operate. In the summer, you have the opportunity to organize walks through the dense forests, especially since the southern part of the Salla region is occupied by the Olanka National Park, with beautiful nature and hiking trails. In the forest you can meet deer, foxes, wolves and even the owner of the taiga - the brown bear. For fishing lovers in Lapland, summer is a heavenly time. The local lakes and rivers are rich in fish. You can catch perch, pike, and grayling.

Fans of cycling will also find something to do; many cycling routes passing through the hills and plains will allow you to ride a bicycle while admiring the surrounding nature.

Accommodation of tourists is possible at will in several different places. There are comfortable hotels where you will feel at home, with a full package of amenities.
