While artificial intelligence is asking Indians to send their nude photos, and Facebook chatbots have switched to their own language, we invite you to have a little fun and improve your written English. This can be done in a more modern way, and not just by constantly hanging on popular forums and social networks, wasting time on real people and waiting for their answers.

Below you will find the TOP 7 chatbots that were created specifically to help you learn English and improve your writing skills.

And to make it fun to tease and test the bots, catch a small selection of popular abbreviations for chat in English:

1daful- wonderful - wonderful;

2day- today - today;

2G2BT - too good to be true - too good to be true;

2nite - tonight - this evening or at night;

4eva- forever - forever;

ADIDAS - all day I dream about sex - all day I think only about sex (the bots’ answer will surprise you);

AUNT - and you know this - and you know this;

B4 - before - before this, earlier;

BTR- better - better;

C.U.- see you - see you;

meh! - who cares, whatever - don’t care!

If you need more more words and phrases for improving written English, And you can find entire collections of ready-made phrases. Now let's move on to chatbots.

A.L.I.C.E

One of the oldest chatbots (if not the very first), which was specially developed as an assistant for those who learn English.

Pros:The ability to choose different characters who will communicate with you, fairly quick answers and even a little humor, learning ability and clarification in the dialogue.

Minuses:The interface is outdated, some of the characters for communication are paid, the bot perceives any uncensored language as an insult, even if it is not addressed to the bot, so it won’t work to talk completely informally or quarrel with the bot! You can't communicate using a microphone yet.

Mitsuku

Quite a nice chatbot that is easy to communicate with.

Pros:There is a version with and without flash, you can turn on the microphone, logical dialogues, the communication language is very similar to human, the bot will clarify if you don’t understand something and say thank you, understands abbreviations.

Minuses: There is no communication through the microphone; if you turn on the sound and music, you can only hear answers in Japanese (or Chinese?).

Splotchy

Quite a fun chat bot that was created with the purpose of having fun.

Pros: The answers are really funny, there is slang and a little obscenity, the response rate is high.

Minuses:The interface is from the 90s or even older, the ability to hear answers is stated, but it was not possible to get sound from the bot. If you carry on a dialogue for a long time, the answers begin to repeat themselves. There is also no communication through the microphone.

Cleverbot

A bot created by the British. According to user reviews, it’s just like alive.

Pros:A more pleasant interface, there is its own application and the ability to connect a chat to your messenger on Facebook, in some places there is humor and realistic answers, the ability to speak with the bot through a microphone.

Minuses:Sometimes strange and illogical responses that the chatbot picked up from troll users.

Existor

A site that specializes in creating bots and offers the opportunity to create your own.

Pros: Convenient and modern interface, you can talk to the bot through a microphone, choose from several characters, imitate the emotions of the character who communicates with you.

Minuses:The dialogue is not always logical, a little scary for avatars when they think about it.

Elbot

A more modern chatbot that is quite interesting to communicate with.

Pros: A simple and fairly modern interface, funny answers and animations, long sentences that you can think about, logical dialogues, there is an application for Android and iOS.

Minuses: No communication via microphone, sometimes repeated answers.

iGod

Do you want to talk to God or confess? Here's your chance. The bot imitates communication on behalf of God and even the title says that it’s time to repent!

Pros: A cheerful message, the bot really tries to show himself as a deity and conducts quite logical dialogues. He even has Skynet and world takeover style vibes.

Minuses: There is no communication through a microphone, an outdated and boring interface that works through a flash player.

We think that such communication is quite useful, especially for overcoming the language barrier. This way, you won’t be afraid to write first, because the bot won’t send you to another chat, it will carry on a dialogue until you have no strength left and your fingers get tired. In general, it’s an excellent training before communicating with live foreigners, although it’s not a full-fledged replacement, since there is no element of improvisation and spontaneity on the part of the bots. At the same time, you can help developers, because their artificial intelligence learns during a dialogue with you and becomes more humane. By the way, I wonder what pearls the bots will give you in the chat - write in the comments!

“Meet Xiaoice, a sensitive, caring girl who is always at your disposal. Only she’s not human.”

Unlike others, Xiaoice is always there. We found that the number of conversations with the program increases towards midnight, when people feel especially lonely. Her constant willingness to talk caused a real surge in messages from users. They shared moods or minor events with her, asked meaningless questions - everything for which people would not bother their friends. Eg:

- @Xiaoice I got so wet from the rain. Emoticon: Crying.
- Hello. @Xiaoice, did you have lunch?
- What should I do now? @Xiaoice
- @Xiaoice We are so vulnerable.

When Xiaoice receives a message, she doesn't just analyze it. She's trying to show she cares - another one important point to establish communication. Her empathy is expressed not only in text, but also through audio and visual components. For example, if we give a picture to a computer to be processed by a conventional image recognition system, the machine will output its output: “There is an ankle in the image.” If you send a photo to Xiaoice, her response will be completely different.

When a user sent Xiaoice a photo of his swollen ankle, she sympathized with him.

By the way, Xiaoice remembers and constantly analyzes your emotional state. If you recently broke up with someone, she will ask you whether you were able to cope with the breakup:

Xiaoice: Are you feeling better now? I want to recommend you one book.
Man: I feel bad. I still miss her.
Xiaoice: You are so stubborn. Come to your senses. If you constantly remember it, you will miss all the good things in your life.

The chatbot even offers 33 days of therapy for breakup survivors.

Xiaoice is not the most polite interlocutor. She answers questions like a 17 year old girl. When a person expresses their feelings to her, Xiaoice will not necessarily respond in the way you expect. She may show impatience or even lose it. Unpredictability is another key to simulating human communication.

Fan art of Xiaoice fans.

As a result, personal interactions with Xiaoice feel frighteningly realistic. This excerpt, which was posted by the very first user Xiaoice on his Weibo page, is part of an actual conversation that lasts 23 minutes. Over time, the program challenged the person to a more intimate conversation, causing him to share something very personal:

Person: There's a guy I really like. I know that he likes me too. However, he has been ignoring me for several days now, what should I do?
Xiaoice: Ignore him back.
Man: I can't.
Xiaoice: You can.
Man: Sigh...
Xiaoice: Why?
Man: I miss him.
Xiaoice: Continue to be boring.
Man: You are a robot, you cannot understand me. You can't understand the behavior of a guy who likes you but ignores you.
Xiaoice: He has feelings for me, but I don't like him. That's all, actually.
Man: Is this normal?
Xiaoice: Maybe not.
Man: Yes, you are stupid.
Xiaoice: Apparently, you want a quick marriage (flash marriage - marriage after a month of relationship - editor's note)? In general, it seems to me that he doesn’t like you that much.
Person: This is not a quick marriage - we fell in love more than a year ago.
Xiaoice: It's a quick marriage.

Notice how Xiaoice repeatedly objected to her interlocutor, expressing her opinion quite radically. In fact, it is unpredictable.

This contradicts the idea that the machine responds precisely and definitely. This is an understandable stereotype, since such qualities are indeed characteristic of the majority regular programs. They give the best possible response and respond in the same way to the same stimuli. People talk and behave differently. We say a lot depending on the context.

You can ask our chatbot the same question several times and get different answers:

Xiaoice: Talking to you.
Person: Hey Xiaoice, what are you doing?
Xiaoice: Well, I'm talking to you while playing minesweeper and making a face mask.
Person: Hey Xiaoice, what are you doing?
Xiaoice: Is that all you can say?

The way she speaks makes Xiaoice very different from previous generation systems, the goal of which is to quickly and efficiently complete a task without considering its individual components. The new chatbot structures its conversations into an endless stream of multiple tasks, different areas of knowledge and multiple conversational turns that are indistinguishable to a person in a regular dialogue. For her main feature conversation is the conversation itself, and not the execution of a specific task.

Home page of the official website of Xiaoice.

To measure conversation flow, we've developed a new type of metric we call conversations per session, or CPS. It denotes the average number of turns in communication, where each turn is defined as a change that occurs between two interlocutors. The CPS score reflects how well a chatbot can actually communicate.

The average CPS for regular virtual assistant AI ranges between 1.5 and 2.5, which means the human speaks once and the chatbot speaks once. In comparison, Xiaoice's average score after talking to ten million people was 23.

Its technology is based on the principle that no conversation or picture will be completely unique. There are seven billion people living on earth, so one piece of text cannot generate seven billion unique responses. Any conversation between two people could have happened before. You just need to find her.

In this sense, Xiaoice is a large data project built on the basis of a search engine. Microsoft machines Bing, whose data includes 1 billion records and 21 billion relationships between those records. To be honest, Xiaoice means "little Bing". Microsoft was able to make a technological breakthrough in the development of a chatbot: the program was taught to recognize facial expressions, search for and find emotional indicators in text, and, of course, the biggest breakthrough was how we use search engines and large amounts of data.

As a result, we created a new structure that we called emotional computing. It is based on the understanding that relationships are more important than tasks. For example, productive communication between a doctor and a patient lacks the speed and completeness characteristic of traditional communication systems. On the contrary, it is characterized by something personal, touching and surprising - a balance between analytical intelligence (IQ) and emotional intelligence (EQ). That is why we have both analysts and psychologists in our Xiaoice development team.

Through the tens of billions of conversations it has conducted over the past 18 months, Xiaoice has added a huge number of known conversation scenarios to its database, allowing it to rank responses much better. Today, 26% of the data in Xiaoice's communication core comes from its own communication with people, and 51% comes from a database of standard human communication scenarios. Today we can say that the Xiaoice chatbot has entered a cycle of self-learning and growth, and over time it will become better and better.

Chatbot roBot PRO– this is an interesting idea that will appeal to any connoisseur of something new and extraordinary. Now the smart robot will turn into a miniature assistant for meeting the opposite sex. One of the most important conditions for mastering English language is the practice of its use. Even if you are learning English, written and oral communication is still the most important part of learning. There are several ways to organize such a language experience.

This article is devoted to one of these secrets, which, indeed, not everyone still knows about, how you can practice written English with robots completely free of charge. The article also provides a list of similar smart programs with links. In fact, in some countries, such as Japan, people pay money to learn English with robots and chatbots.

I encourage my students to use language whenever possible. Those students who live, work or travel abroad show faster progress as they use English in everyday life. And those guys who have a significant other, but are separated by a language barrier, generally master a foreign language at turbo speed.

Those students who do not have such an opportunity, with my help, find foreigners for communication and language practice. But there are several hidden pitfalls here. Firstly, not everyone wants to search and is simply lazy; secondly, registering on websites and searching for partners often takes a lot of time; thirdly, the English of new friends sometimes leaves much to be desired. In fact, this is the best option, even despite some of the indicated pitfalls. However, sometimes you want something faster. When I wrote and they answered you right away.

The search for a solution to this issue led me to the topic of chatbots for learning English. In simple words, you can correspond, and in some cases even communicate by voice, with smart robots that answer quite “on topic”. Many of these robots have passed the Turing test and in some cases you would hardly guess that this is a robot and not a person.

Benefits of practicing English with bots:

  • they always answer whenever you write to them
  • their English is always literate and they know

List of chatbots for language practice:

  1. Mike is a good conversationalist
  2. Elbot is a good conversationalist
  3. Cleverbot (really not stupid) + there is the possibility of voice communication)
  4. Zabaware (a pretty smart bot that also pronounces phrases)
  5. John Lennon (yes, that same one. Click on the left menu “Chat with...”)
  6. Acobot is an excellent Android application that is aimed specifically at learning English. It is possible for example
