In this regard, the LG Magna is similar to the latest members of the family with curved screens, such as the G Flex 2 and G4.

However, the Magna screen itself is curved just slightly; its radius of curvature is as much as 3000 mm. However, in appearance the smartphone seems much more curved, both from the screen side and from the back side. This visual effect is achieved by the black plastic side bezel, which has a much more curved shape than the body itself. Being the most noticeable and eye-catching design element, it is this element that creates the impression that the smartphone body is curved much more than it actually is.

The bezel itself, by the way, does not have a glossy and easily soiled coating, like the same LG G4, but a matte and non-shiny coating, but its surface is still slippery enough to hold in your fingers. At the same time, the body of the smartphone remains largely non-marking; fingerprints are visible only on the display glass. In terms of size, the LG Magna is typical of modern five-inch smartphones, not too big, not too heavy and not too thick.

Most of the case is made up of a removable plastic cover, which almost completely covers not only the back part, but also all the sides, that is, all the holes for access to the connectors located at the ends are made in it. The lid has a fairly thick profile, and due to its shape in the form of a solid trough, it turns out to be completely inflexible.

At the same time, the lid can be easily removed from the body - for this purpose there is a small ledge on the side for a fingernail. Under the cover you can find a standard set of slots: two for SIM cards in Micro-SIM format, and the third for a microSD memory card. The battery here is removable, it does not support the cards, but hot-swapping them is still impossible; you will have to reboot the smartphone.

On the outside of the rear panel of the device there is a camera window, a single LED flash and a speaker grille. It should be noted that all of the listed elements are designed in a single “square” style, unlike, say, the LG G4: even the holes in the grille covering the speaker are square. The grille is located on the curved edge of the case, so the sound of the smartphone lying on a hard surface is practically not muffled.

The surface of the cover around the buttons has a textured appearance that resembles rough sanded metal. The surface is non-marking and not very slippery. The buttons themselves are slightly recessed and have an even rougher texture, so they are easy to feel blindly. The buttons have a standard purpose: the central key turns on and locks the smartphone, and the other two, top and bottom, are responsible for adjusting the volume. Expanded capabilities of the block of hardware buttons provide additional functionality in control: holding the top button for a long time launches the Qmemo application, and the bottom button activates the camera.

The front side of the smartphone is completely covered with protective glass, which is given a slightly curved shape. Glass, it should be noted, has only weakly expressed grease-repellent properties: it becomes covered with fingerprints quickly, but is difficult to clean. The front surface of the screen is made in the form of a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface that is scratch-resistant. Judging by the reflection of objects, the anti-glare properties of the screen are no worse than those of the Google Nexus 7 (2013) screen (hereinafter simply Nexus 7). The LG Magna's screen is slightly darker (photo brightness is 104 versus 111 for the Nexus 7). The ghosting of reflected objects in the LG Magna screen is very weak, this indicates that there is no air gap between the layers of the screen (more specifically, between the outer glass and the surface of the LCD matrix) (OGS - One Glass Solution type screen). Due to the smaller number of boundaries (glass/air type) with very different refractive indices, such screens look better in conditions of strong external illumination, but their repair in the case of cracked external glass is much more expensive, since the entire screen has to be replaced. LG indicates that in this case the technology is used In Cell Touch, that is, the touch sensor is integrated into the LCD matrix, this reduces the number of layers in the screen. In theory, such a screen device can improve anti-glare properties and increase efficiency (brightness) due to fewer reflections between layers. The outer surface of the screen has a special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating (less effective than the Nexus 7), so fingerprints are removed more easily and appear at a slower rate than with regular glass.

With manual brightness control and when the white field was displayed in full screen, the maximum brightness value was 452 cd/m², the minimum was 17 cd/m². The maximum brightness is high, which means, given the excellent anti-glare properties of the screen, readability even on a sunny day outdoors should be at a good level. In complete darkness, the brightness can be reduced to a comfortable value. There is automatic brightness adjustment based on the light sensor (it is located to the left of the front camera eye). In automatic mode, as external lighting conditions change, the screen brightness both increases and decreases. The operation of this function depends on the position of the brightness adjustment slider. If it is 100%, then in complete darkness the automatic brightness adjustment function reduces the brightness to 17 cd/m² (normal), in an office illuminated by artificial light (about 400 lux) it sets it to 252 cd/m² (slightly higher than required), in a very bright environment (corresponding to lighting on a clear day outdoors, but without direct sunlight - 20,000 lux or a little more) increases to a maximum of 452 cd / m² (which is what is needed). Brightness slider at 50% - the values ​​are as follows: 17, 150 and 452 cd/m², at 0% - 17, 63 and 452 cd/m² (the logic can be followed - the brightness value changes in average light conditions). In general, the automatic brightness adjustment function works adequately. At any brightness level, there is no significant backlight modulation, so there is no screen flicker.

The screen has good viewing angles without significant color shift even with large viewing deviations from perpendicular to the screen and without inverting shades. For comparison, here are photographs in which the same images are displayed on the LG Magna and Nexus 7 screens, while the screen brightness is initially set to approximately 200 cd/m², and the color balance on the camera is forcibly switched to 6500 K. In the case of LG Magna, the picture is dark and the saturation is clearly too high. As additional tests have shown, this overestimation is achieved due to a strong increase in color contrast. As proof, here is a test image with saturation gradients:

It can be seen that as saturation increases (from bottom to top) in the main field, horizontal stripes with saturated shades in the case of LG Magna quickly become indistinguishable, and the boundaries between shades are very pronounced. You can see that colors haven't changed much on both screens, but the contrast on the LG Magna's screen has dropped noticeably due to a significant increase in black levels. And a white field:

The brightness at an angle for the screens decreased (at least five times, based on the difference in shutter speed), but in the case of the LG Magna, the brightness decreased slightly less. When deviated diagonally, the black field brightens greatly, but remains conditionally neutral gray in hue. The contrast (approximately in the center of the screen) is high - about 930:1. The response time for the black-white-black transition is 13 ms (7 ms on + 6 ms off). The transition between halftones of gray 25% and 75% (based on the numerical value of the color) and back takes a total of 22 ms. The matrix is ​​relatively fast. The gamma curve, constructed using 32 points with equal intervals based on the numerical value of the shade of gray, did not reveal any blockage in either the highlights or the shadows. The index of the approximating power function is 2.72, which is significantly higher than the standard value of 2.2, which is why the image is darkened. In this case, the real gamma curve deviates slightly from the power-law dependence:

We did not find any dynamic adjustment of the backlight brightness in accordance with the nature of the displayed image in this smartphone, which is very good.

The manufacturer compensates for the reduced coverage by increasing color contrast, but this does not go unnoticed, since the discernibility of gradations in the area of ​​saturated colors decreases. The balance of shades on the gray scale is average, since the color temperature is noticeably higher than 6500 K, and the deviation from the blackbody spectrum (ΔE) is more than 10, which is considered a bad indicator even for a consumer device. The balance is distorted, of course, due to an excess of blue and green components, which, other things being equal, leads to a slight increase in brightness. It’s good at least that the color temperature and ΔE change little from hue to hue - this has a positive effect on the visual assessment of color balance. (The darkest areas of the gray scale can be ignored, since color balance there is not very important, and the error in measuring color characteristics at low brightness is large.)

To summarize: the screen has a high maximum brightness and has excellent anti-glare properties, so the device can be used outdoors without any problems, even on a sunny summer day. In complete darkness, the brightness can be reduced to a comfortable level. The automatic brightness adjustment function works absolutely adequately. The advantages of the screen include the presence of an oleophobic coating, high contrast, no flickering and no air gap in the layers of the screen. Nevertheless, taking into account the importance of characteristics for this particular class of devices, the quality of the screen can be considered high.

Sound

LG Magna unexpectedly pleasantly surprised me with very loud and high-quality sound, clear and bright; the only complaint may be that the sound is too loud, the low frequencies are practically not felt. And yet, the smartphone sounds pleasant for its level - without rattling or distortion, even at the maximum level. In headphones the situation is even better, here the bass is audible, and again no distortion was noticed, the overall volume level is quite satisfactory. In conversational dynamics, the interlocutor's voice, timbre and intonation remain familiar and distinguishable. To control the sound quality in the proprietary audio player, you can choose from several preset equalizer values.

FM radio is included as standard with the smartphone. The radio does not work without headphones connected as an external antenna, but it can record programs from the air.

Camera

LG Magna is equipped with two digital camera modules with a resolution of 8 and 5 megapixels. The front camera is equipped with a 5-megapixel module with an f/2.4 aperture lens and does not have autofocus or its own flash. To take a selfie, quick shooting functions are provided with one touch and using a hand gesture; for this, the so-called “virtual flash” was invented, when the part of the screen around the viewfinder remains brightly backlit in order to “softly highlight” your own face while shooting front camera.

The main rear camera is equipped with an 8-megapixel sensor and an f/2.4 aperture lens with autofocus and its own LED flash. The settings menu is exactly the same as in last year's LG models, nothing has changed in this regard. The menu is extremely laconic, the settings are combined into several horizontal bars that appear as needed. The icons and captions for them are drawn finely; in bright sunshine they can be difficult to distinguish. Typically, in the settings of the smartphone camera interface, you can use a variety of shooting modes: panorama, continuous, sports, HDR. Everything is much simpler here: besides the standard automatic mode, there are no other modes provided.

The camera can shoot video; there are several resolutions to choose from, up to a maximum of 1920x1080. The camera copes well with video shooting, autofocus adjusts quite quickly. An example of a test video is presented below.

The camera has good sharpness and detail, which could be the envy of many 13-megapixel modules. The work of the noise reduction is very careful, although noticeable, but the resulting noise is practically invisible. Sharping is practically absent, although it can be found in places. Perhaps not the widest dynamic range and slightly poor colors will not allow you to fully use the camera for artistic photography. But it will cope well with documentary shooting.

Telephone and communications

The smartphone operates in modern 2G GSM and 3G WCDMA networks; the device does not support LTE (4G). That is, the maximum speed of wireless data transmission for reception here is limited by the HSDPA+ standard to 21 Mbit/s. You can organize a wireless access point via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth channels, there are Wi-Fi Direct and Wi-Fi Display modes, the Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n module supports only one band (2.4 GHz). NFC is not supported, and a flash drive cannot be connected to a USB port using an OTG adapter.

The device works with GPS/A-GPS, without support for the domestic Glonass. The device is equipped with a magnetic field sensor, which is necessary for the successful functioning of the electronic compass of navigation cartographic programs.

The smartphone supports two SIM cards using the Dual SIM Dual Standby standard. Apart from a special button for quickly changing the priority SIM card, the implementation of working with two SIM cards is generally standard for this platform. There is only one radio module, so there can only be one active conversation. In the settings, you can assign a name, color theme, and icon design for each card. When dialing a number, there is no choice between two SIM cards - for this purpose there is a separate button for quickly switching the priority card, located in the bottom row of icons. A SIM card in any slot can work with 3G networks, but only one of the cards can work in this mode at the same time (the second will only work in 2G).

OS and software

LG Magna initially runs on the latest fifth version of the Google Android software platform. Naturally, over-the-air (OTA) firmware updates are also supported. However, the familiar “Material Design” interface design cannot be found here; everything is hidden under LG’s own proprietary shell, which significantly modifies and complements the standard interface. There are not as many additional functions and capabilities here as in the older models of the flagship series; some things were not found here: for example, the proprietary QSlide function, which allows you to detach and reduce the size of working windows. But in place is Glance View, with which you can view the date and time even when the screen is off, as well as the KnockOn security system. Gesture support is limited mainly to just turning the device over to mute an incoming call or pause a video. The only remaining elements of the proprietary interface of the fifth version of Android OS are the interactive tiles that inform you about any events; previously, for obvious reasons, they were not present in LG smartphones. But the most important innovation brought by the arrival of the newest version of the OS is the ability in Android to save a copy and subsequently completely restore the system.

Performance

The LG Magna hardware platform is based on an outdated quad-core MediaTek MT6582 single-chip system (SoC) with rather weak ARM Cortex-A7 processor cores with an operating frequency of up to 1.3 GHz. The Mali-400MP video accelerator, modest in its capabilities, is responsible for graphics processing here. The device allocates only about 3.4 GB of its own memory for the user’s needs; it can be increased using a microSD memory card officially up to 32 GB, although our 64 GB test card was also recognized by the device. The amount of RAM is 1 GB. The mode for connecting external devices to the Micro-USB (OTG) port of the device is not supported.

According to the testing results, the platform showed expectedly modest results, below the average value (less than 20K in AnTuTu), even when compared with other modern entry-level platforms. In terms of performance, the SoC MT6582 is approximately on par with one of the weakest modern platforms, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 410, and its GPU is even inferior to the Adreno 306 in the Qualcomm Snapdragon 410. As a result, in terms of the performance level of the hardware platform, the LG Magna smartphone is difficult to classify as average - this is , rather, the level is closer to the initial level, although the device’s capabilities are enough to perform basic tasks and play videos with a resolution of up to 1080p. However, for modern demanding games, the capabilities of the outdated and frankly weak Mali 400MP GPU are clearly not enough.

Thermal photographs

Below is a thermal image of the back surface (the top of the image is on the right), obtained after 10 minutes of running the Epic Citadel program (in High Quality mode):

It can be seen that the heating is localized in the upper part of the device, which apparently corresponds to the location of the SoC chip. According to the heat camera, the maximum heating was 38 degrees, which is not very much.

Playing video

To test the omnivorous nature of video playback (including support for various codecs, containers and special features, such as subtitles), we used the most common formats, which make up the bulk of the content available on the Internet. Note that for mobile devices it is important to have support for hardware video decoding at the chip level, since it is most often impossible to process modern options using processor cores alone. Also, you shouldn’t expect a mobile device to decode everything, since the leadership in flexibility belongs to the PC, and no one is going to challenge it.

According to the testing results, the subject was not equipped with all the necessary decoders that are needed to fully play most of the most common multimedia files on the network. To successfully play them, you will have to resort to the help of a third-party player - for example, MX Player. True, it is also necessary to change the settings and install additional custom codecs, because now this player does not officially support the AC3 sound format.

We did not find the MHL interface, like Mobility DisplayPort, in this smartphone, so we had to limit ourselves to testing the output of video files on the screen of the device itself. According to the criterion of frame output, the quality of playback of video files on the screen of the smartphone itself is good, since frames (or groups of frames) can (but are not required) be output with more or less uniform alternation of intervals and without skipping frames. With the exception of files with 50 and 60 fps, but films with such a frame rate can be considered as non-existent. When playing video files with a resolution of 1280 by 720 pixels (720p) on a smartphone screen, the image of the video file itself is displayed exactly along the border of the screen, one to one in pixels, that is, in the original resolution. The brightness range displayed on the screen corresponds to the standard range of 16-235 - all gradations of shades are displayed in shadows and highlights.

Battery life

The removable battery installed in the LG Magna has a capacity of 2540 mAh that is decent for modern smartphones. The display resolution, as the most energy-intensive element of a smartphone, is not so high here (720p), the platform is far from being one of the most demanding, so in terms of battery life, the smartphone is at a very decent level.

In normal operation, the device confidently survives until evening charging; with economical consumption, it can last for two days. It is also worth noting that testing was carried out without using any energy-saving functions, although the smartphone has them.

Typically, such workhorses are chosen precisely for their low price and unpretentiousness in operation, but the buyer can turn a blind eye to such characteristics as the level of performance and the quality of shooting on camera.

If your smartphone does not want to boot normally, works poorly or does not work at all, you should try flashing it. Fortunately, almost all LG Android devices are flashed the same way. You can do this either using the KDZ utility or through the official LG Mobile Support Tool. We will now describe the sequence of actions.

This instruction applies only to GSM devices. The CDMA firmware has not been tested against it. The method has some dangers. If a failure occurs during KDZ operation at the time of bootloader recording, only a service center can restore the device. We recommend choosing a good cable in advance, charging the battery in the laptop, disabling antiviruses and turning off other programs. It is better to use the cable that came with the device and place it in the rear socket of the computer. There may be a lack of power through the hub.

Preparation

Install all the drivers one by one and just in case, LG Mobile Support Tool. Firmware

Drivers are installed. The phone is visible. It's time to launch KDZ. Go to the folder with the installed flasher and open KDZ_FW_UPD.exe as an administrator. If it doesn't work, right-click on the file and set it to compatibility with Windows XP SP3. Flashing on Windows 8, 10 is not recommended. For your own safety, find a computer with Windows 7.

Now you need to select the firmware itself using this button.

Click Launch Software Update and wait. The utility may hang; the process sometimes lasts more than half an hour. It's better not to touch anything. Then progress bars will run across the screen, and you will see the treasured message about the end of the firmware FINISHED. KDZ sometimes behaves erratically. In our case, she flew out immediately after the procedure was completed. Because of this, the image is different.

The phone will reboot itself and begin charging. Disconnect it from the cable, disconnect the battery and turn it on by holding the “power” button. If the device does not work, try entering Emergency Mode again and flashing it 2-3 more times. Sometimes the LG Mobile Support Tool utility also helps restore operation.

Updating the official software and restoring the “brick”

Nobody forbids you to try the official software update utility. It happens that it helps to cope with particularly obstinate devices. Open LG Mobile Support Tool

Click “install USB driver”, mark your model and wait until everything is downloaded and installed.

Connect the device. If it is in working order, but there are no official firmware updates, the program will write about it.

When the “start updating” column is active, try selecting it and following the program instructions. Everything is simple and clear there. There is only one drawback - the LG Mobile Support Tool takes a very long time to download the firmware. Don't expect a quick solution to the problem.
