Do you like photography? Well, of course you do :) And also, after the OS X 10.10.3 update, a new Photo program appeared. And in fact, it is a replacement for iPhoto and Aperture. So, in it, just like in previous programs, there is a function for sorting photos according to various criteria. Now I want to show what sorting photos is using the example of smart albums (smart folders).

What is a smart folder?

A smart album/smart folder (smart = smart) is an album in which photos are sorted according to certain criteria - shooting date, shooting device, description, face or something else. For example, you often shoot on different devices - iPhone 5, iPhone 6, Canon and something else. So, so that you don’t have to worry about choosing photos taken on different cameras, you can create a smart album and specify the required device in the Camera Model parameter. Or you want to highlight photos taken from such and such a date - this can also be selected into a separate album with just a few clicks of the mouse! By the way, if in the future you add new photos to your library that fall under certain rules that are in smart albums, then they will automatically end up in the smart album!

Sort photos on Mac

So, what needs to be done in the Photo program to sort photos? First, you need to import frames from your old iPhoto or Aperture library, or connect your camera/iPhone/iPad to your computer and import the photos into the Photo program.

After clicking, you will immediately see a new dialog box where you can give the album a name, as well as specify various parameters.

As you can see, the choice of parameters is large enough to satisfy almost any request :) The most interesting thing, in my opinion, is:

As you can see, you can easily sort photos on a Mac, and in addition to the usefulness of this method, you will also get a lot of pleasure from viewing your photos!

Keywords in Photo

Did you think that was all? Nope, there is one more thing :) If you have a lot of thematic or similar photos, for example, you photographed various devices on the same day, in one place, and want to somehow divide them into different smart albums, then you can use a keyword for each photo or group of photos. This is done simply - select one or several photos of the same topic (in my case, these are photos of the Mi Band bracelet), press the key combination CMD + I and in the window that appears, in the field Add a keyword, write the same keyword or phrase!

One of the most useful and interesting features of Mac OS is the presence of smart folders. They are present in the Photos, Mail, and iTunes sections. How to create a smart folder in Finder?

To do this, enter the required text in the search bar, and then add the optimal criteria. This will help make your search more accurate. Don't forget to indicate specific places and areas to search for files. That's it, now you can save the result as a ready-made smart folder. You can additionally specify the date the file was edited, as well as the time it was created. Smart folders are very convenient to use for sorting downloaded files. This is especially true if you have a standard “Downloads” folder, since this is where absolutely all downloaded files end up by default. For people who use Mac products, there is a very simple process of creating folders which involves dragging and dropping applications on top of one another. Windows 7, although it comes with a whole range of innovative features, does not appear to possess this built in functionality. In fact, creation of folders in Windows has not changed since Windows 98 where the user is required to create a separate folder and move their preferred files manually into it. Now users won’t have to feel a step behind Mac users with the free application calledSmart Foldersdesigned by AddictiveTips. The application makes it incredibly easy to create folders whenever a user feels the need and to retain a neat desktop. All versions of Windows (XP to Windows 7,8), 32-bit or 64-bit, can run the program smoothly.

The application essentially follows the same mechanism as Macs where organizing word documents, images and media files can be performed in a swift operation. The process involves clicking or highlighting the preferred file(s) located on the desktop and dragging them on top of another file, followed by the application requesting the user to type in the name of the folder they wish to create. When the folder name has been entered it is thus generated in the same location and the files all transferred into that particular folder.

Downloading and installing Smart Folders

The application, Smart Folders, can be downloaded from . The program is quite small in size and should not take more than a few minutes to download. Once downloaded, click the .exe file to commence installing the application. In some instances, users may experience a User Account Control warning (as shown below), if this is the case, clickYes to continue.

When the main interface appears, choose the 'Install' option and the program will begin the installation process.

Using Smart Folders:

To automatically create folders, navigate to your desktop. Select one or multiple files (if preferable) and a small pop up stating ‘move’ should appear when you start dragging them. Drag the files to another program or file and release.

A dialog box will display requesting a name for the output folder. Type in a preferred name and click OK for the folder to be created.

The folder has now been formed and your selected files have transferred into it. That's it!

Configuring file extensions in Smart Folders:

The application is registered for all extensions by default, however, some Windows and other programs have specific file extensions that may need to be registered manually by the user. In order to configure file extensions, open the application and enter in the particular file extension in the text box and select the Register button.

The file extension should now appear on the list of acceptable file extensions for Smart Folders. You can also make it that only registered file extensions can be used by Smart Folder.

If you want to remove the file extension for whatever reason, then just select the relevant one and click Deregister.

Uninstalling Smart Folder from Windows:

If you find that you are not overly content with Smart Folders or require the drag-and-drop method for other reasons, you can uninstall it by navigating and launching the installers file.

Select Uninstall.

All file extensions will be unregistered and the application deleted from the operating system. Please note that settings for configured file extensions will not be retained and therefore if you decide to reinstall Smart Folders you will need to re-enter your preferred settings.
