Exactly a week has passed since Lenovo officially announced its two new smartphones - Lenovo K5 and K5 Plus, which are practically no different from each other, but we will also talk about this below.

Differences between Lenovo K5 and K5 Plus

It’s probably worth first talking about how different the new smartphones from Lenovo are from each other. There are only two points by which smartphones can be distinguished - the difference is only in the installed processors and display resolution. Everything else is 100% identical. Even the diagonal of the screens is the same and there are no differences in small details - including support for Dolby Atmos audio technology, which will delight music lovers. Two speakers are installed at once for better sound quality.

By the way, one very strange fact: for some reason, at the official Lenovo stand at the MWC 2016 exhibition, only the Lenovo K5 Plus version of the smartphone was exhibited. This immediately leads one to think that a simple smartphone model is presented just like that and they don’t have high hopes for it.

Design

There's not even anything to talk about here. The most typical design that a Chinese smartphone can have. He simply gets lost in a sea of ​​similar ones. It may be practical, but it's boring.

The silver/golden/gray plastic case, 8.2 mm thick, has a metal coating around the perimeter of the front panel. Above the screen there is a 5-megapixel front camera, light and proximity sensors, and a speaker.

Below the screen there is a standard set of capacitive buttons, and they are not even backlit. It's good that the back panel is almost entirely metal - aluminum with plastic inserts at the top and bottom. They are not trying to surprise us with anything. No options.

Performance and operating system

Lenovo K5 and K5 Plus run on Android 5.1 firmware. It’s strange, because Lenovo could have shown these smartphones already running Android 6.0 at the MWC exhibition. For some reason, we are offered a slightly outdated version of the operating system, which has only stock capabilities with some cosmetic changes and a bunch of pre-installed, not particularly necessary applications, such as SHAREit, SNAPit, Guvera Music for social networks and streaming. But nothing bad can be said about optimization. Everything works very quickly. Due to this, Lenovo K5 and K5 Plus did not perform so badly in benchmarks, but they are like from China to Paris compared to flagships. The older version received almost 35k points in AnTuTu. The result is not bad for an average player. This is definitely not a budget car, but we’ll talk about the price a little lower.

Camera

The main camera here is 13 megapixels, the front one is 5 megapixels. In general, we saw this set even a couple of years ago. The main thing is that both cameras cope well with their tasks even in not the best lighting. Autofocus is adequate, the photos are not perfect, but of high quality, there are no complaints about detail.

Errors occurred in the most inappropriate places - in automatic mode, shooting was carried out with incorrect exposure settings. If you take a series of photographs, only 30% of them will be of normal quality. All others show poor white balance and are blown out. Therefore, the camera needs a firmware update and until then you only need to shoot in series. Single photos may be damaged.

Conclusions:

For now, this is just a preliminary review of the Lenovo K5 and K5 Plus and first impressions of the smartphones. Details can only be provided after careful review. What can we say now?

The new items are not particularly remarkable. The case has three color options - gray, gold or silver. At the stand there was only a gray model - a universal one. Maybe the gold version will look more expensive.

On the other hand, there is one important point due to which people will buy smartphones - their price.

Lenovo K5 will cost $130 in China, and Lenovo K5 Plus will cost $150. They will be available for sale this spring. Even with their faceless appearance, there is every chance of becoming popular. What is important, they have new processors, optimized firmware, and not the worst camera.

And here the minimal difference between the Lenovo K5 and K5 Plus is confusing. Just $20 - and we get not an HS screen, but a Full HD screen, as well as a more powerful processor. Everything suggests that the simple version of the K5 will be a failure on the market, if it is released at all.

On February 21, at the Mobile World Congress 2016, Lenovo introduced two new smartphones: K5 and K5 Plus. The new items can definitely be called not just brothers, but siblings, since the similarity in characteristics is 90%, only one of them is a little older, and even then not by much. Let's see the details.

Differences

Smartphones, to put it mildly, do not differ much in their technical characteristics and parameters. There are only two main differences: displays and processors, and the rest is absolutely identical. Both new products have a five-inch screen and support for Dolby Atmos technology, which allows you to reveal all the facets of the sound of your favorite music. If you acquire relevant and correctly compiled content, then it will be generally good.

External speakers (yes, there are two of them) play loud enough (above average) and with high quality. Still would! What else with Dolby Atmos support?

There was no regular version (VIBE K5) at the company's stand. There was only K5 Plus. Already from this indirect sign we can conclude that the model without the “plus” prefix is ​​of no use and there is no reason to be released. Later, I will explain why, but for now let’s take a closer look at the device and the short, but still user experience.

Design

Externally, the smartphone is nothing special.

The design is the most common and there are simply a huge number of similar smartphones on the market. Personally, the new product reminded me of the long-gone Samsung Galaxy Star Plus GT-S7262.

Above the screen there is a standard set of front elements: a 5 MP camera, sensors and a speaker.

At the bottom there are touch-sensitive system control buttons. They are not backlit.

At the back, the device has a metal cover and plastic inserts at the top and bottom. All this is very boring and we have seen it more than once from a variety of companies.



System and performance

The device runs on Android 5.1 OS. Since the new product is completely new and many manufacturers are already installing Android 6.0 (the latest series of devices from LG, for example), the release of new devices with an outdated operating system is a strange step. However, the shell and software are well optimized.

The animation flies, switching between applications does not slow down - everything is fine with this.

In AnTuTu K5 Plus scores about 35 thousand points. Not a bad result, but not a breakthrough at all. The most important thing is that the device does not behave like a budget defect and works quite stably.

Cameras

It was decided to install a front module of 5 and a main module of 13 megapixels in the device. The lighting at the stand wasn’t the best, but it wasn’t a total disaster either, so the smartphone had a chance to show off its photography capabilities.

It's nice that he coped with the test. The photos are of quite decent quality, a good level of detail, no problems with autofocus, and so on.

The only thing that confused me were the errors that the automatic mode made when setting the exposure. Out of about 20 frames, I left only seven. The rest were either overexposed, or the system made a mistake when setting the white balance. In general, if you're going to shoot with the K5 Plus, take a few shots at a time. By the way, this is a general rule that applies to any photographic equipment, even if it is a SLR camera.

Bottom line

Both new products are available in three colors: platinum silver, champagne pink and graphite gray. The company showed only silver, the most versatile options. I haven’t seen the rest, so I can’t say anything about them.

Let's move on to the most interesting part - cost. Firstly, Lenovo K5 Plus price will be $149 (approximately 11 thousand rubles). For the money, even if it doesn’t look good, the smartphone is still very good. Doesn't slow down, new platform (Snapdragon 616), good cameras.

Everything seems to be fine. However, there is a second thing. This is the price for the regular version of Lenovo VIBE K5. It is $129 or about 10,000 rubles. What?! You pay an extra thousand rubles (maybe one and a half) and get a Full HD screen instead of a weak HD and a more powerful processor. Where is the logic?! Why was it necessary to release the younger version at all, when from a technical point of view it is noticeably inferior to the older one, and the difference in price is very small? I don't have an answer to this question

However, both phones will be available in select countries in March. Nothing is known about Russia. If the smartphone goes on sale, it will be by the summer.

Removable

Today we have a review of the Lenovo K5 or there is another name - Lenovo A6020, which is a new product for 2016, first shown at the NVC-2016 technology exhibition in Barcelona. Including several more powerful modifications, we’ll talk about them another time.

Smartphones from the Vibe line are always classified as premium series devices, that is, flagships. But specifically, the Lenovo Vibe K5 is more of a budget phone.

The box is made of white cardboard with an image of the gadget on the front. In addition to the phone, the kit includes:

  • Quick start instructions and warranty card;
  • charger 5 Volt, 1.5 Ampere;
  • MicroUSB cable;
  • earbud headphones;
  • thick plastic case;
  • protective film.

Quite a rich set, which is not so often seen.

Appearance

The Lenovo K5 body is made of plastic, glass and metal. The manufacturer offers several color options: light gray, dark gray or graphite and gold.

The front of the phone looks standard. Above the screen there is a speaker, a front camera with 5 megapixel expansion, as well as light and proximity sensors. There is also a notification indicator that is located in the top right corner. It can change its color to green and red. Below the display are the standard Android navigation keys. They are not backlit, but have reflective paint.

On the right side there is an on/off button, as well as a volume rocker. The left side remained empty. There is a hole for a microphone on the bottom side. made of plastic. The upper end is made of plastic, which is not easy to do, but to improve the signal of the antennas. There is also a MicroUSB charging output and a standard 3.5 mm jack for connecting a headset or headphones.

The back cover is made of aluminum with plastic inserts. It is removable. The lid is not very pliable, but nevertheless can be removed, which can generally be considered a plus. The main frame of the lid is made of aluminum, but the top and bottom strips are made to look like metal, although they are plastic.

Under the cover there is a removable lithium-ion battery, two microSIM slots and a separate slot for a memory card. On the back cover there is the main antenna, under it there are several contacts from it.

There are two speakers on the bottom. One of the main features of Lenovo K5 is the presence of two stereo speakers. This, combined with Dolby Atmos technology, allows you to get pretty high-quality sound. True, the technology can only be fully appreciated with headphones. The sound is loud and spacious.

At the top there is a peephole of the main camera with an LED flash (its expansion is 13 megapixels), and below it is a second microphone for noise reduction. In the middle is the Lenovo logo.

Dimensions:

  • Height - 142 millimeters;
  • Width - 71 millimeters;
  • Thickness - 8.2 millimeters:
  • Weight - 142 grams.

Lenovo K5 turned out to be a hefty smartphone due to its metal back cover.

The device lies comfortably in the hand.

The phone can be easily controlled with one finger. There is a coating on the back cover, but despite this the smartphone still slides.

Screen

The K5 has a 5-inch display with HD 1280 x 720 pixels. This is a very average figure for today. The screen is made using IPS matrix technology. Density: 204 pixels per inch.

The viewing angles are quite good and of high quality. The fonts look smooth. It can be noted that the screen in this gadget turned out to be of high quality with a good margin of brightness.

Supports the display up to 5 simultaneous touches. There is a light oleophobic coating on the surface. The finger glides well, but it feels like the coating is weak, and it may rub off over time.

Processor, OS and autonomy

The technical characteristics of the device are as follows:

  • Octa-core Quallcom Snapdragon 415 processor. Four Cortex A-53 cores operate at a maximum frequency of 1.4 GHz, two auxiliary ones can reach speeds of up to 1 GHz at low loads. Although in the settings the processor is displayed as 615. This is due to the fact that they differ only in different operating frequencies. The original 615 runs at 1.7 GHz, as the 415 runs at 1.4 GHz.
  • Adreno 405 video accelerator.
  • RAM - 2 GB.
  • Built-in memory is 16 GB, with 11.6 GB available at launch. Memory cards up to 32 GB are supported.

But how does Lenova Vibe K 5 behave in games? In heavy Asphalt 8, the picture turns out juicy, which does not particularly affect the smoothness of the process. The phone behaves more or less adequately. There are no brakes. But if we take, for example, football stimulants, then the results are no longer the best. FPS drop appears. Tanks also run quite smoothly, but only if the settings are lowered.

The processor is controversial, below average for games.

The device runs on the Android 5.1 operating system with the proprietary Lenovo Light UA “shell” on top of it.

Inside the gadget there is a battery of only 2750 mAh, which is enough for a normal working day when used in medium load mode. If you are going to load it with games, you will have to recharge it twice a day.

Camera

As mentioned earlier, the device has two cameras: a 13 MP main camera and a 5 MP front camera. Standard set.

The user has at his disposal:

  • Light flash.
  • Autofocus and touchfocus.
  • Supports HDR and other modes, which can be configured independently in the camera menu. From "Auto" and motion to night photography to "Night portrait" and "Beach".

The owner can also choose a professional mode, where he can adjust the ISO level, add contrast, saturation, sharpness or shutter speed.

The peculiarity of the front camera is that in the settings you can select “mirror photo”, that is, the image will turn out exactly the same as you see on the smartphone screen.

  • Mode 4 to 3;
  • Auto;
  • White balance;
  • Image quality;
  • Additional effects.

But despite this, the quality of the photo leaves much to be desired. The picture is a little blurry, lacks clarity and has too much grain.

And when darkened, the photo generally does not reach the level it should be.

Perhaps with subsequent firmware this issue will be partially resolved.

The maximum resolution when recording video is 1800p format. Maximum duration is 30 minutes. There is an autofocus mode and electronic image stabilization.

Results and price

What do we get in the end for 7 thousand rubles? As always, there are pros and cons.

  1. Interesting design.
  2. Separate SIM cards and memory card, that is, you don’t have to choose anything.
  3. High quality screen.
  4. Loud stereo speakers.
  1. Not all games run well; Lenovo's optimization is a little lame.
  2. Very weak battery.
  3. Price for this device.
  4. Cameras.

The Lenovo K5 is, in principle, a good smartphone that is suitable for most everyday tasks, but you shouldn’t expect more from it.
