The videocacheview program does not find it. How to retrieve a video from the cache of any browser. Known Issues and Limitations

All data that we download from the Internet in one way or another is stored in the browser cache. This is done so as not to download data from the web page every time, but to speed up loading and save traffic, download only the information that has changed since the last time you entered the site. There is no exception for videos from the global network. How to get a video from the browser cache - this can be done in two ways - go to the cache folder and find the desired video file there or use special software.

How to get video from browser cache yourself

Option 1 – search for the file manually

To do this, you need to know where each browser temporarily stores information from web pages.

- Google Chrome:

Navigate to the following path: C:\Users\"Username"\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Cache. If you do not see the AppData folder, then you need to enable the display of hidden files and folders (Control Panel - Folder Options - View - Show hidden files and folders).

Find the file you need and open it using the right mouse button and “Open with”.

- Opera:

The cache for this browser is located here: "C:\Users\"Username"\AppData\Local\Opera Software\Opera Stable\Media Cache".

Alternative option– type in the address bar: about:cache, select the desired file format and click “Preview all”.

— Mozilla Firefox:

In the address bar, enter about:cache – In the “Disk” section, the path to the cache folder is indicated. If you click on the “List Cache Entries” link, the contents of the cache will open in a browser window.

Option 2 – use specialized software

To help parse the cache, the VideoCacheView program is well suited. Sort files by name (Filename) or content (Content Type).

Right-click on the desired file and select “Play file as...”

Select a player and watch the video.

It's no secret that after watching a video on the Internet, it is saved in the browser cache, and if you can find it there, the video can be viewed without connecting to the Internet. To make this search easier, you can use the small VideoCacheView utility.

About the program

Purpose

A free program that can “pull” multimedia files (video, audio, graphics and flash videos) that you viewed when visiting various sites from the browser cache.
After automatically scanning the contents of the caches of Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Opera and other browsers, VideoCacheView displays a list of all available files that you can immediately play, save to disk, open a link to the video in the browser, or copy it to the clipboard. In addition, the program will show the date of last access to the file, its size, type, etc.

Launch

Short description

The program does not require an installation process or additional DLL files.
To start using it, run the executable file (.exe). After launch, the program scans your browsers folders, as well as the Windows temporary folder. Wait for the process to complete, 5-30 seconds of scanning and the main VideoCacheView window should display all video files that are currently in the cache.

After this you can use one of the following options:
(provided that the video files are stored in the cache "In cache" = Yes)

  • Play selected file: Allows you to play video files directly from the cache, assuming you have a video player that will be able to play files with the flv or mp4 extension.
  • Copy Selected Files: Allows you to copy cached video files to another folder so you can play them in the future.
If you have a video file that is not cached ("Cached" = No), you can use the "Open URL in Browser" hotkey option (F8) to download the video file. You can also use the other option "Copy URL" keyboard shortcut (Ctrl + U) to copy the address to the clipboard and then use it in your browser or any other file download program (such as DownloadMaster).
Note: Some sites do not allow you to download files this way. Windows

Flash Video files in Temporary Folder

When a Flash video file (.flv) is played in a web browser, the file is saved in the Windows Temporary folder. As a rule, it is not possible to copy this temporary file to another folder because the web player blocks the file as being in use. When you close your web browser, the Flash video file is automatically deleted from the folder. VideoCacheView displays Flash files from the Windows Temporary folder and allows you to copy them to any other one. The program allows you to process temporary Flash files created by web browsers Internet Explorer, Mozilla/Firefox, Opera. If you don't have a video player to play Flash files, you can Download and try the free Applian FLV player. Note Note: Please note that you must wait until the browser has finished downloading the Flash video file completely from the Internet, otherwise the copied file will be damaged.
  • If you want to play or save files from the Firefox cache, you need to close all browser windows because only when you close them does Firefox save the cache data to disk.
However, if the current Flash video file you want to save is still open, you can copy it from the Temporary Folder of the Windows operating system without closing the Firefox browser window.
  • On Windows 7 - If you want to extract files from the "Temporary Folder" and UAC is enabled, you must run VideoCacheView as an administrator (right-click "VideoCacheView.exe" and then select "Run as Administrator"). To save downloaded video files from the Web Browser Cache, you can run VideoCacheView without administrator rights.
YouTube

Streaming MPEG-DASH

The YouTube website has started using MPEG-DASH streaming instead of Flash (.flv). To convert streaming MPEG-DASH into a valid .mp4 file that can be played on any media player, you need to download and install the GPAC software package.
VideoCacheView will automatically detect and use MP4Box as part of the installed GPAC package to convert the MPEG-DASH stream to a valid mp4. If for some reason VideoCacheView is unable to detect the installed GPAC package, simply copy VideoCacheView.exe to the GPAC installation folder and run the program from there.
If you don't install the GPAC package, you will get 2 stream files (one for video and one for audio: mpegdashtmp1.mp4 and mpegdashtmp2.mp4). These files can be played by the Windows 8 media player. Keep in mind that this feature does not work in the Chrome web browser, simply because Chrome stores YouTube cache entries with an empty URL and thus VideoCacheView cannot detect them. Menu

Editing List of media files found in the browser cache

VideoCacheView allows you not only to find videos in browser caches, but also to perform important and necessary operations on the found elements.
After performing a search, a list of found media files is generated. You can find the required file using the Ctrl+F key combination or the Magnifier button on the toolbar. You can also sort the generated list with certain properties by clicking the desired column. For example, if you click on the Browser column, all entries will be sorted by browser type: first from one, then from another, etc. To quickly find the required file, sorting by date of last access can be useful.

Having found the required media file in the list provided by the program, you can play it in the player associated with this type of file by simply clicking the first button on the Toolbar with the green triangle icon or save it in the desired folder. To do this, select the desired element, press the F7 key and indicate where to save the audio or video file from the cache. Unneeded files can be deleted from the cache by pressing the Del key. As you can see, you can not only find the file you need, but also manage cached files or partially clear the cache.

If you use one browser, you can disable others - this will speed up the search process. In addition, you can optionally specify which temporary folders should be included for scanning.
