Stylish and affordable tablet phones from Lenovo: PHAB and PHAB Plus. Hardware: memory and performance

This model is at the intersection of ultra-compact tablets and very large phablets, but, judging by the name, the manufacturer is positioning it precisely as a phablet, and this is what we will focus on. It’s interesting that when Huawei announced its MediaPad, they emphasized in every possible way that it was a compact tablet, but Lenovo, on the contrary, suggested treating the Phab Plus as a very large phone. We had a detailed first look at this model, so in today’s review I left the “Appearance” and “Dimensions” sections unchanged (except that I updated the photos). If you have already read that article, I recommend going straight to the “Screen” chapter.

Appearance, materials, control elements, assembly

What is Lenovo Phab Plus like? I’ll be honest, my first associations were with the iPhone 6. Fortunately, I have the latter in my hands, so below I’ll give you a couple of pictures of the Phab Plus and the “six”.

And if from a design point of view I would like more originality, then I don’t mind the thin aluminum body; it pleasantly cools the hand, does not slip and is resistant to fingerprints and scratches.

On the left are the power button and volume rocker. The keys protrude strongly and are very comfortable to use.

You can see a 3.5 mm jack on top, and a microUSB port on the bottom.

On the right side there is a tray for two SIM cards: nano and micro. By the way, one of the slots can be used to install a microSD card. The device perfectly supports cards up to 200 GB.

The main speaker is installed on the back of the phablet. Despite the fact that he is alone, he has very good sound quality and volume reserve.

There are three different color versions of the phablet on sale: dark gray, silver and gold.

Dimensions

For myself, I have long come up with a simple and understandable detector that helps determine what kind of device is in front of me, a phablet or a compact tablet. If you look stupid holding it near your ear, it means you have a tablet in front of you; if it’s more or less normal, it’s a phablet. And this is where Phab Plus threw me for a loop. On the one hand, its dimensions are only slightly larger than those of the legendary Sony Xperia Z Ultra, and on the other, the dimensions are on the edge, that is, you can still hold it near your ear, but you already feel a little awkward.

By the way, when testing the Huawei MediaPad X2 there were no such problems; due to its large width, it was perceived exclusively as an ordinary very compact tablet.

Screen

For its price (20,000 rubles), the Phab Plus display has excellent characteristics, and it performs well in everyday use. You won’t notice individual pixels, viewing angles are close to maximum, and the picture remains readable in the sun. Plus, the model uses a high-quality oleophobic coating; your finger glides perfectly across the display.

I believe that FHD resolution is quite optimal for seven inches. It’s enough for both reading text and watching videos in 720p/1080p.

operating system

The device runs Android 5.0 with the proprietary Vibe UI shell. I will talk about all the features of the implementation of this shell in a full review, and I also recommend reading the review of Vibe UI by Eldar Murtazin.

After several weeks of using the device, I can’t help but notice that the shell is developing: errors in translation and rims around icons have disappeared, the appearance of Vibe UI is as close as possible to stock Android, and this, in my opinion, is a big plus.

Performance

Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 is a mid-ranger that has proven itself well when working with HD/FHD resolutions. Phab Plus is no exception to this statement; the device works quickly both in everyday tasks and in productive games.

I would like to separately note 2 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal memory, or rather, I wanted to note until I remembered that we are talking about a device for 20,000 rubles; for this segment such figures no longer look impressive.

Autonomous operation

Despite its very modest battery capacity, the Phab Plus demonstrates excellent performance in our tests. In an everyday scenario using mobile networks, you can safely count on two days of battery life.

Camera

The main camera shoots well in daylight, but the situation worsens when it comes to artificial light; noise appears in the pictures. The module determines white balance more or less accurately. The video is recorded in FHD, you can also take photographs while shooting, there is tracking autofocus, the image quality is average.

Wireless interfaces

Among the features I would highlight is the ability to install a memory card in the slot for a second SIM card. A couple of years ago it looked interesting, but now users are increasingly asking the question: was it really impossible to make a separate slot for the card?

Conclusion

There are no complaints about the quality of voice transmission, except that you look a little stupid holding such a device near your ear. Lenovo Phab Plus retails for 20,000 rubles, and I was pleasantly surprised that the company did not sharply raise prices for this model after the New Year.

I thoroughly enjoyed using the Phab Plus as an ultra-compact tablet for several weeks. It easily fits into any backpack or even a small bag; if desired, it can also be used as a main smartphone, of course, with a slight discomfort associated with the large diagonal, but for rare calls this is not a problem.

The only competitor to Phab Plus, Huawei MediaPad X2, sells for 23,000 rubles and has similar characteristics. The key difference is the width of the case; the MediaPad is still wider due to its different aspect ratio. Otherwise, these are models of the same level, and you should choose between them, focusing solely on use cases. For example, the Phab Plus is better suited for watching videos and using it as a phone, while the MediaPad X2 will be more convenient for those who like to read from a tablet.

By the way, Lenovo has a simplified version of this model, it is called Lenovo Phab and costs 12,000 rubles. The simple Phab has a lower display resolution (HD vs. FHD), less RAM (1 GB vs. 2 GB) and internal memory (16 GB vs. 32 GB) and a less powerful chipset (Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 vs. Snapdragon 615). But it also costs almost half the price, and even its capabilities are enough for watching videos, so those looking for a compact, inexpensive tablet for TV series can save a lot of money by taking a simple Phab instead of the older model.

"Size matters!" - Lenovo was clearly guided by this principle when deciding to release Lenovo Phab Plus. Even in our enlightened times, when it’s almost 2016, when you won’t surprise anyone with a 5.5-inch smartphone and fewer and fewer people call such a “shovel,” the Chinese company was able to present something that causes surprise.

Phab Plus is a mega-shovel, a super-smartphone or, alternatively, a “micro-tablet”. With a 6.8" screen diagonal, the positioning automatically moves into an extremely narrow niche of universal devices for those who need an “almost tablet” that is as convenient as possible to carry with them.

The most interesting thing is that Phab Plus is most likely a smartphone. It has a characteristically elongated body, the controls are located like on a phone, the screen frame is thin and, among other things, it painfully resembles the iPhone 6s Plus, which is pretty “corroded” on Chinese grub. So let's get to know him better.

Video review of Lenovo Phab Plus

First of all, we suggest you see Phab Plus on video. There really is something to see there!

Design

Lenovo Phab Plus is huge. This is immediately visible to the naked eye. However, there is no doubt that this is a smartphone. The shape of the case, its elongated silhouette, and the familiar “iPhone” design somehow prevent the thought that this could be a tablet.

The most amazing thing is that Phab Plus fits more or less comfortably in your hand! Undoubtedly, holding it in the palm of your hand is not so easy, it bursts open and talking for a long time is not so comfortable. But if you work with it like a regular smartphone, doing something on the screen, then you don’t feel much difference.

But at the same time, this huge phone weighs quite a lot - 229 grams. However, one cannot expect anything else - with a diagonal of 6.8" this is not even very much. I immediately remember an 8-inch tablet, whose weight is 265 grams and which is a little “disguised” as a smartphone. But in any case, even 229 grams is decently.The hand pulls and gets tired if you hold the handset for a long time.

And, of course, it’s cool to hold such a massive iPhone 6 Plus. The similarity is not complete, but very noticeable. From the front side it may not be so visible, but we rarely look at a smartphone strictly from the front, at an angle of 90 degrees.

The back cover resembles the iPhone 6 much more strongly. It is entirely metal, flat, with rounded corners and ends. Immediately noteworthy are the plastic antenna inserts on the bottom and top, well known to owners of Apple phones of the last two generations. However, in the upper part the insert is made not as a thin strip, but as a whole block. Although the camera is placed in the left corner, just like on the iPhone.

It should be noted that Lenovo Phab Plus is quite thin - 7.6 millimeters is not a record value, but quite small. Because of it, and also thanks to the rounded sides, the tube fits well in the hand.

Overall, we like the way the Phab Plus looks and feels. Despite the obvious copying of Apple's design ideas, the Lenovo smartphone has its own individuality due to its exorbitant size.

Connectors and controls

Lenovo did not place the controls in any special way. Let's say more - there are serious differences from the iPhone!

Above the screen there is an earpiece, a front camera lens and light and proximity sensors.

There is nothing underneath, even Lenovo decided to abandon touch buttons.

At the back, in the upper part, under a perforated plastic plug, an external speaker is hidden, and the main camera lens and dual LED flash are also located here.

At the bottom there is a plastic antenna strip.

On the left side there is a compartment for SIM cards and microSD cards.

All buttons are located on the right side - these are the volume control and the power button.

On top there is only an audio jack. Let us remind you that on the iPhone 6s it is placed at the bottom.

At the bottom there is only a microUSB output and a speaking microphone. It should be noted that on the sides of the USB port there are two small bolts, which seriously enhance the resemblance to the iPhone 6 - it has the same ones.

The card compartment is opened using the included ejector; The hole is too narrow for a paper clip. The holder accommodates three types of cards: the main microSIM, a second nanoSIM communication card or a microSD memory card. That is, you will have to choose whether to install nanoSIM or microSD. You can see how this looks in practice in our video:

There's nothing special about the Phab Plus's connectors or controls. Everything is in its place, and the resemblance to the iPhone coincides only in the presence of bolts on the sides of the microUSB output at the bottom. It would be better if they moved the audio jack there - this would not only increase the resemblance to an iPhone, but would make using the smartphone more convenient.

Contents of delivery

Lenovo Phab Plus comes in an elongated white box on which the smartphone itself is depicted.

The box is high quality and well made.

But not much was found inside. In particular, this is a short user manual, ejector, USB cable and charging. There is no headset - this is the trend of 2015, to refuse the headset in the package.

Surprisingly, cases and covers for Lenovo Phab Plus are already on sale and their range is quite extensive!

This matte plastic case costs about 1,300 rubles.

There is a pouch option for the Phab Plus. It will cost about the same 1300 rubles.

Since the Phab Plus is also a mini-tablet, there is also a stand case for it. Costs about 1500 rubles.

A leather cover for Lenovo Phab Plus costs about 3,000 rubles. But it turns out very well!

Screen

Lenovo Phab Plus is not a cheap device, but it is far from being in the expensive segment. So the question to ask about his screen is how good is he? If you look at 7- or 8-inch tablets for the same money, you often come across models with a good display, but which do not have the highest resolution.

However, the Phab Plus is still not quite a tablet; it is more like a huge smartphone. But smartphones for the same money often offer a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels. More are currently only available to flagships, so it is not surprising that the Lenovo device has Full HD resolution. With a 6.8-inch screen, this gives a pixel density of 324 ppi - decent for tablets and average for phones. But in any case, the clarity of the image on the screen is excellent. If you don’t peer at the picture, looking for two-minute “jags” on curved lines (in fonts, circles, etc.), then this question will not worry you.

Otherwise, it is immediately clear that a high-quality IPS matrix was used. Maybe not the best possible, but at least good, with pleasant soft color rendition - just as “aesthetes” love, blaming AMOLED screens for excessive saturation. The display also behaves well in the sun - the image fades, but remains readable. And the viewing angles did not disappoint - after all, we are dealing with IPS.

But as for objective measurements, not everything is so smooth here. In particular, the maximum brightness we measured at 268.04 cd/m 2 is disconcerting - this is below average. It is not very critical, but many modern smartphones gravitate towards indicators at the level of 350-420 cd/m2. But the black color turned out to be deeper than usual - 0.19 cd/m2, a value that is about one and a half times better than the average we encountered. The final screen contrast turned out to be quite decent – 1379:1.

The color gamut of the Phab Plus display also looks good - it almost completely covers the sRGB space, so there should be no problems with color reproduction.

The color temperature graph explains the warm picture on the screen - the temperature violation is very slight, about 500-700K. On average, for most other devices it reaches 1000-1500K.

Gamma curves, unfortunately, are not as pleasing to the eye as color gamut and white balance. There is a noticeable deviation in the upper part and middle - the measured curve passes below the standard. It turns out that areas of the picture with light colors are displayed darker than necessary.

Incredible but true - the Lenovo Phab Plus screen recognizes no more than five simultaneous touches! This is not a disaster, but we somehow expected a “ten”. After all, we are talking about a huge 6.8-inch smartphone, on the display of which it is not so difficult to fit all your fingers. And the device itself is not cheap.

There are no special screen parameters in the settings. You can change the brightness level, turn on sleep mode and similar things that everyone has.

Overall we like the Lenovo Phab Plus screen. There are some complaints about it, such as not the highest brightness, but the main thing is that the picture is pleasant to the eye and does not cause irritation at all.

Camera

The Lenovo Phab Plus camera is not “tablet-like” at all. More precisely cameras. Don't believe me? Then name in the comments at least one tablet with a 13 MP rear camera and a 5 MP front camera. So, when assessing the quality of shooting, there will be no “okay for a tablet” discounts - everything will be considered from the point of view of smartphones.

The camera application on Lenovo devices has undergone noticeable changes with the transition to Android 5. It was simplified by leaving the choice of shooting modes, while the settings were placed on a separate screen.

The settings are now made too dark - white text on a black background. At the same time, there are such parameters as photosensitive ISO, exposure compensation, white balance, stabilizer. Overall a good set of parameters.

Maximum resolution is achieved by choosing an aspect ratio of 4:3, while 16:9 narrows photos down to 10 MP.

The quality of the footage is generally good. The camera correctly determines the white balance, does not overexpose the pictures, and they come out quite clear. Even in poor lighting conditions, it turns out more or less decently, although if there is a lack of light, the “shake” can blur the frame.

For video, only white balance adjustment is available. The maximum shooting resolution is Full HD. We didn't expect anything else.

The video also looks decent - clear, with correct color reproduction, without blurring.

The front camera has only two resolutions available: 5 MP with a 4:3 ratio or 2 MP (Full HD) with a more elongated 16:9 option.

The frames taken from the front sensor are not so sharp, but they also look more or less decent. They are sometimes overexposed, but overall the camera provides good quality for selfies.

The front camera can shoot video in Full HD resolution – something you don’t often see on non-flagship devices.

In principle, the video looks good, but the clarity is clearly not as high as from the rear sensor. However, she should not surpass him.

Overall, the Lenovo Phab Plus cameras are quite good. Not the best on the market or even in its class, but the shooting quality is decent.

The most amazing thing is that Lenovo has made a whole Phab line, which includes two devices: Lenovo Phab and our Phab Plus. Do you think the first one is a “mini version”? Not at all - this is a 7-inch tablet phone, that is, sorry, 6.98 inches. But the screen resolution is lower - 1280x720, as well as the processor is weaker, there is less RAM and internal memory. But Android 5.1, and not 5.0, like the “plus”. In short, a "simple" Phab is bigger, thicker, heavier, slower and supposed to be cheaper.

The specs of the Phab Plus look pretty good. It's not a flagship, but a very solid mid-ranger. is next to each other in the table because it has a processor of similar power, but at the same time a slightly different positioning.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processor provides a very good level of performance, although not the highest possible. Inside, it has eight Cortex-A53 cores, divided into two quad-core units: one clocked at 1.46 GHz and the other at 1.11 GHz.

The video card is also quite decent - Adreno 405 is a development from Qualcomm itself. The graphics core operates at 550 MHz and supports all modern standards, including DirectX 11.2 and OpenGL ES 3.1.

There is 2 GB of RAM installed, which is also at an average level if we take the standards of 2015. Enough for work and play. And the built-in flash memory is 32 GB, which is quite decent. If there were 16 GB here, we wouldn’t even think of writing this down as a disadvantage. And so Lenovo Phab Plus acquired one more advantage.

The rest of the smartphone's characteristics are quite typical. It has an LTE modem and supports all Wi-Fi standards, including high-speed 802.11ac. Overall, the device looks modern and even productive. Let's see how fast it works.

Performance testing

Now let's see who is faster - the typical Samsung Galaxy J7 phablet or the mega-shovel Lenovo Phab Plus. In theory, they should be approximately the same, especially since the Galaxy J7 is available in a modification with a Snapdragon 615 processor. However, we still receive a version with an Exynos 7580.

Either something went wrong with Lenovo, or their developers didn’t really “finish” the Phab Plus firmware, but the smartphone noticeably lost to the Galaxy J7 in the old Smartbench 2012 test. However, this is not an indicator yet.

Another old test, Quadrant, shows approximately parity, as we expected.

The modern system-wide Antutu benchmark gives victory to Samsung, but its superiority is not very great.

In the browser test, SunSpider also retained a slight lead over the Galaxy J7.

Smartphone video cards showed the same speed in Nenamark2, an old 3D test. What will happen in the new ones?

And in the new ones, the clear victory went to Lenovo Phab Plus - the Adreno 405 video card turned out to be stronger than the Mali-T720, which the Samsung chipset has. However, the difference between them is not very significant and is invisible to the eye.

Autonomy is better than the Galaxy J7. However, here we must take into account that this smartphone has almost a record, while the result of Lenovo Phab Plus is also very good. After passing all the tests, it had 77% charge left. With a 3500 mAh battery and such a large screen, this is a good indicator.

The greatest energy consumption, as always, occurred in 3D games, which is not surprising. The next most "gluttonous" tasks were those related to web surfing and watching videos. Well, the maximum savings are achieved if the screen is turned off.

Lenovo Phab Plus is a very capable smartphone that can satisfy most potential buyers. Autonomy also turned out to be decent, so you most likely won’t have to look for an outlet at the most inopportune moment.

Games on Lenovo Phab Plus

In theory, games on Lenovo Phab Plus should run smoothly. But for some reason this did not work out in all cases.

  • Riptide GP2: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Asphalt 7: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Asphalt 8: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Modern Combat 5: Blackout: Some delays are visible;
  • N.O.V.A. 3: Some delays are visible;

  • Dead Trigger: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Real Racing 3: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Need For Speed: No Limits: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Shadowgun: Dead Zone: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Frontline Commando: Normandy: Some delays are visible;

  • Frontline Commando 2: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Eternity Warriors 2: Some delays are visible;

  • Eternity Warriors 3: Some delays are visible;

  • Eternity Warriors 4: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Trial Xtreme 3: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Trial Xtreme 4: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Dead Effect: excellent, the game does not slow down.

  • Dead Effect 2: excellent, the game does not slow down.

  • Plants vs Zombies 2: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Iron Man 3: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Dead Target: excellent, the game does not slow down.

Some games on a Lenovo smartphone still run with some delays. There are no serious slowdowns, but definitely the highest performance in all possible games. But we still expected a different result. Probably, the speed of the video card was not enough for the Full HD resolution that the phone screen has.

Lenovo Phab Plus runs Android 5.0, which is somewhat strange for the second half of 2015. The smartphone was shown to the public back at IFA 2015 in August-September, and it went on sale in November, when Android 5.1 had long been available. Moreover, we are dealing with a device that is not cheap. It may not be a flagship, but since the budget one comes with a 5.1 system, what’s wrong with our megashovel?

We believe that the problem is not related to the drivers - the Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processor is well supported by the manufacturer and can even run Android 6.0. Perhaps it's the proprietary shell, which has been modified for use with one finger.

At first glance, she looks typical. Well, not quite typical - after all, on a 6.8-inch screen there will either be a lot of icons and other elements, or they will be made large. Lenovo rather settled on the second option. In terms of using the vast display space, there are many items in the menu and so on, but there are no more than five icons in a row on the desktops.

Lenovo's proprietary shell, like many of the company's devices, is greatly lightweight and almost invisible against the backdrop of “pure Android”.

But in the case of the Phab Plus, several features have been added to make it easier to use the large screen. In the quick settings, called up by pulling the notification screen down, and at the same time in the settings on the “Special” tab, there are corresponding configuration items. In particular, this is a microscreen for one hand and a smart menu.

When you enable the smart menu, a small translucent button appears on the right side of the screen, clicking on which opens an additional menu panel with quick access to various frequently used applications and functions. Here you can add shortcuts to the programs you need. The settings set the transparency of the button and its behavior.

With the microscreen, everything is also generally clear - the desktop is simply displayed in a proportionally reduced form. In this case, it is really easier to work with one hand, although it all doesn’t look very good. In the settings, you can specify which applications will not work on the microscreen, but will be deployed to the entire available space.

We did not find any other unique features in Phab Plus. The list of applications is quite ordinary - in addition to the standard ones, there are several proprietary ones.

For example, Dolby Atmos, which adjusts the sound parameters of the phone.

The icon with the name Lenovo Phab did not impress us - there was only an interactive user manual, more like a brochure.

There is a proprietary SHAREit application for exchanging files between devices: a smartphone and a tablet, another smartphone or a computer.

As always, there is also a SYNCit program for archiving and saving contacts to a memory card or to the cloud.

There is also an antivirus from McAfee - a useful application for Android devices.

We have already talked about all the interesting settings above, and the rest are the most ordinary, from Android 5.

In terms of software, Lenovo Phab Plus looks good. It's a little disappointing that there isn't a new version of Android, but it may be released in the future. Otherwise, everything works quickly, without glitches, and in addition there are special tools to make it easier to work with one hand.

Conclusion

Lenovo Phab Plus is not a device for everyone. Although to some extent it can replace both a tablet and a smartphone, it is still mostly a tablet. A tablet disguised as a smartphone. Something like that. You can only carry such a shovel in very large pockets - even in men's jeans, the ones that are not tight, such a tube makes it difficult to sit, and walking is not very comfortable.

But overall we still liked the device. If we leave the dimensions and weight out of the equation, Phab Plus offers a thin metal body, a design a la iPhone, two good cameras, and a decent screen. Its software shell has a mode for one-handed operation, which is also a plus. But it makes sense to activate it when the second hand is busy.

The characteristics of the Lenovo shovel are quite modern. There is a good 8-core Qualcomm processor, the built-in memory is 32 GB, which is more than many tablets and smartphones can offer for the same money. In general, you understand - nothing slows down on Phab Plus. But Android 5.0 is a little confusing - we expected to see version 5.1 there, and in the future also Android 6.0. Okay, let's figure out how much a Lenovo tablet phone costs.

Lenovo Phab Plus price

You can buy Lenovo Phab Plus for 20 thousand rubles. The price is not very high in our opinion. For a similar price, it will be difficult to find a 7 or 8 inch tablet with similar characteristics, although some smartphones are of some interest.

The Sony Xperia T2 Ultra offers a 6-inch screen and is inferior to the Phab Plus in many ways. The screen resolution is only 1280x720, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor will also be weaker than the Lenovo device. The amount of RAM is only 1 GB, and the built-in memory is a ridiculous 8 GB. And this is in a device for 17 thousand! Whatever you say, the advantages of T2 Ultra compared to Phab Plus are smaller size, weight and Android 5.1. Sony also has a 6-inch Xperia C5 Ultra, with a noticeably better screen and more memory. However, at a price of 26 thousand, it is not a competitor to the reviewed shovel from Lenovo. Well, you don’t have to remember the 6.44-inch Xperia Z Ultra - the device came out 2 years ago and looked very interesting then, but now it’s completely outdated.

Yes, you read that right, we suggest considering the Lenovo Vibe Z2 Pro as a slightly more compact alternative to the Phab Plus. This is a 6-inch flagship from 2014, which received an update to Android 5. It has a metal body, a powerful Snapdragon 801 processor, 3 GB of RAM, 32 GB of internal memory, a 4000 mAh battery, support for 4K video recording, and The screen has a resolution of 2560x1440. And all this at a price of 23-24 thousand rubles.

Let us remind you that the 8-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 tablet is made to look like a smartphone, but it is still much wider, even if it has a very thin body. In addition, the price of this tablet with an LTE module is noticeably higher - 39 thousand rubles, that is, almost as much as two (!) Phab Plus. So these devices are from completely different categories, but we considered it necessary to tell about the existence of such an alternative.

Pros:

  • huge size;
  • excellent assembly;
  • metal case;
  • design similar to iPhone 6 Plus;
  • 32 GB of internal memory;
  • deep black color on the screen;
  • good quality of shooting from both cameras;
  • shell mode for one-handed operation;
  • good autonomy.

Minuses:

  • huge size;
  • no headset included;
  • low maximum screen brightness.

Is Lenovo Phab a tablet or a smartphone? This question is even more difficult to answer than in the case of Phab Plus. Simply because the latter is smaller, thinner and lighter. Plus, the 6.8-inch screen is huge, but it's still not 7 inches, which is the minimum for tablets. But “just” Phab, with its 6.98 inches, looks a little “different”.

In fact, when we tested the Lenovo Phab Plus, we didn't notice much of a difference from its "lite" version. If we compare both “phablets” head-on, holding them in our hands, then somehow we don’t feel any less convenient, if we talk about a more “massive” device. They are both simply huge and as such there is no “convenience” in either one or the other.

Yes, yes, working with such giants with one hand is not an activity for the faint of heart and not for the weak at all. So the weight of the Lenovo Phab reaches 250 grams (229 grams for the Phab Plus), which is not much from the point of view of a tablet, but for a smartphone it is huge. The hand begins to get tired quickly - here the optimal value ends at around 170-180 grams.

At the same time, Lenovo Phab looks very good - a sort of huge smartphone. It really doesn’t look much like a tablet – the proportions are a little different, and manufacturers usually make the screen frames of tablets thicker. So the silhouette clearly speaks for a device capable of making calls.

It should be noted that the Lenovo Phab looks different from the “plus” one, especially in the area of the back cover. While Phab Plus offers an all-metal body, here we have a matte soft-touch plastic coating that is very pleasant to the touch. In addition, they did not abandon the metal at all - they left it at the ends, so it turned out very well.

As for the thickness of the device, here we have 8.9 mm. Not the thinnest option, but not very large either. And with such a screen, the smartphone looks very thin. True, Phab Plus is still almost one and a half millimeters thinner.

It should be noted that the Lenovo Phab is perfectly assembled. However, this is always easier to do with a non-separable case. But in any case, the device is well made, high-quality materials are used. Most of all, we liked the design, as well as the feel of the tablet in our hands.

Connectors and controls

So, we have a de facto tablet, which, in general, does not mean any special buttons or connectors. Moreover, our Lenovo Phab is positioned as a huge phablet.

A speaker and a front camera lens are located above the screen. There are also light and proximity sensors, as well as an LED event indicator under the perforated speaker grille.

There is nothing underneath the “fab” – just an empty panel.

At the back, the elements that interest us are grouped in the upper left corner – the camera and LED flash. With this placement option, it is quite easy to block the lens with your fingers - this should be taken into account.

On the left side there is a compartment for SIM cards and memory cards. It is removed using the supplied ejector or a paper clip.

The holder is metal, made to hold two microSIM cards, or one microSIM and one microSD – here you have to choose which option to use. If you have any questions about how to insert a SIM card into Lenovo Phab, our short video will help you resolve them:

All buttons have been moved to the right side. There is a power button and a volume rocker here.

On top there was a 3.5 mm mini-jack for headphones and headsets, as well as a microphone for noise reduction.

The bottom end is “decorated” with beautiful perforations above the speaker; just to the left of it there is a conversational microphone and a microUSB port.

Actually, that's all we can say about the connectors and buttons of the Lenovo Phab. The smartphone has a standard set of them, they are located in the usual convenient places, the manufacturer did not do any experiments, for which special thanks.

Contents of delivery

Lenovo Phab came to us in a retail version.

The device is hidden in an elongated box made of high-quality cardboard.

Its equipment is very meager. It includes a quick start guide, ejector, power supply and USB cable. There is no headset, according to the current bad fashion.

Case for Lenovo Phab

Buying a cover or case for Lenovo Phab at the beginning of 2016 is not so easy yet due to the newness of the phablet. However, there are some things, and over time there will be more offers.

This kind of stand case is available at a price of about 1,500 rubles. In principle, it’s a good option, and it’s more convenient to work with the device.

There is also a leather case for Lenovo Phab. It costs about twice as much - 3,000 rubles. But it looks noticeably better, and it feels noticeably more expensive.

Screen

Lenovo Phab, despite its more impressive dimensions than Phab Plus, belongs to a cheaper category of devices, which means its display parameters will be worse. Let us remember that the “plus” model offers a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels, which for 6.8" does not provide a record pixel density, but the image sharpness is sufficient.

However, Lenovo Phab is not like that. Here we have a 6.98" diagonal and a resolution of only 1280x720. The output is 210 ppi, which is about twice as much as laptops and monitors, but not as impressive as tablets. However, it depends on what To compare, expensive tablets have a high density of dots, while cheaper models will not always have 200 ppi.By the standards of smartphones, this is not enough - this category of devices has mastered 250-300 ppi, if we take the budget and mid-range level.

As for the matrix, here you have to deal with IPS. Of course, “IP-ES IP-ES” is different - in this case, not the most expensive screen option was used. Color rendition is generally not bad, viewing angles are wide, but it becomes blind outside and is not very convenient to use on a sunny day.

According to our objective measurements, the Lenovo Phab screen has a maximum brightness of 378.29 cd/m2, which is not very much, but not little either - quite enough in most cases. At the same time, the black color is not as bright as we have measured on other IPS screens recently - 0.32 cd/m2. Let us remind you that regarding black, the less the better - it does not look gray. The final contrast was 1182:1, which is a very decent result.

The display's color gamut turned out to be smaller than the sRGB color space. This will affect color rendering, although you are unlikely to notice it by eye.

The color temperature, in turn, exceeds the optimal value of 6500K by about 700-800K, which is not very much. Thanks to this, the picture looks “softer”, the colors are “calm”, not so saturated.

The gamma curve is very close to the reference 2.2, that is, all image fragments are displayed correctly. No one will notice a slight “subsidence”.

It's strange, the Lenovo Phab display is huge, but only recognizes 5 simultaneous touches. We believe that a “ten” on such a smartphone-tablet would not be out of place.

There are no special screen settings - you can only adjust the brightness and the time it turns off.

The Lenovo Phab has a decent display with good white balance and deep blacks. You won't notice the slightly narrowed color gamut, but the resolution is still low. But with the resolution, everything is clear - this device should be different from the Phab Plus, right?

Camera

An interesting thing came up with the Lenovo Phab camera. On the one hand, a tablet doesn’t need a good photo module – they don’t shoot much with such a device. But the Phab is not much of a tablet. But this product itself is not very expensive, so in theory you can save money on the camera. However, we wouldn't say that this happened. The sensor of the smartphone is decent, with a resolution of 13 MP.

The application looks simple, but is fundamentally functional. There are various shooting modes. Quite a lot of settings.

There are special scene modes, you can set white balance, ISO sensitivity and even adjust noise reduction.

Maximum resolution is achieved at an aspect ratio of 4:3.

The pictures overall look decent. Even in poor lighting conditions everything is more or less good, although sometimes there are mistakes with the white balance.

For video, you can adjust the white balance and resolution. The latter can reach 1920x1080 pixels or Full HD.

The video, in principle, also turns out well - no worse than photographs.

The resolution of the front camera is 5 MP. It’s also not a “tablet” option at all - it’s clearly assumed that it will be used to take selfies.

The pictures taken from the front sensor are worse. There are mistakes with white balance, and they are also noticeably blurred.

But they did not limit the video resolution on the front camera and made it possible to shoot it in Full HD.

The video, although captured in high resolution, does not look very good: cloudy, with incorrect white balance.

In general, we are satisfied with the Lenovo Phab cameras, especially the main one. It shoots decently for the price category and class of the device.

Lenovo Phab is not only a phablet, which we are reviewing, it is also a whole separate line of devices from the Chinese company. Within its framework, there are currently two products: our Phab (model PB1-750M) and the one we wrote earlier. There are quite a few differences between them, and to make them easier to study, we suggest comparing them by looking at the table:

The differences between Phab and Phab Plus are indeed extremely great - the second is noticeably better in terms of characteristics and is clearly preferable for purchase. But it is more expensive and, please note, it has almost exactly the same dimensions! The length and width of the Lenovo Phab case is only a fraction of a millimeter larger than that of the “plus” model! It's not surprising that we didn't notice a fundamental difference in terms of sensations between them!

Meanwhile, the Lenovo Phab is based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor. This is a quad-core 64-bit chipset built on the Cortex-A53 architecture, operating at a frequency of 1.2 GHz. This chip is extremely popular and generally provides a good level of performance, but is increasingly moving towards the budget segment. However, there is no need to worry about the speed and comfort of working on Phab. The Adreno 306 accelerator is proposed as a video card, which is also a moderately fast solution, although nowadays even MediaTek has more interesting video cards installed.

But Lenovo was clearly greedy with the amount of RAM - 1 GB is quite a bit for such a device. We have not yet seen 1.5 GB in the company’s devices, which means that it considered installing 2 GB of RAM dangerous from the point of view of positioning with Phab Plus. However, Phab itself is not very expensive, so a gigabyte of RAM at its price does not look strange, but still increasing this value by one and a half to two times would be nice. Moreover, there is 16 GB of built-in flash memory - Lenovo did not embarrass itself by installing 8 GB of memory.

The rest of the tablet's parameters are quite standard. From a communication point of view, there is complete order here - there is support for LTE Cat.4, there is compatibility with Wi-Fi 802.11n, as well as Bluetooth 4.0. They may not be the fastest interfaces, but they have a complete set that most will be satisfied with.

Overall, the characteristics of the Lenovo Phab are rated “average” - there is nothing unusual here, on the contrary, such a small amount of RAM was disappointing. Nevertheless, let's see how the device performs in tests.

Performance testing

The Lenovo Phab has no direct competitors, so we decided to compare its speed with an 8-inch mid-level tablet. Its characteristics are largely the same as the model under consideration, and it is also made in the format of a smartphone.

There is nothing surprising in these results - both tablets have the same processor.

Although, of course, in some cases the performance difference is in favor of Phab. The presence of different shells has an effect, and the version of Android is different - Samsung had 5.0 at the time of testing and Lenovo had 5.1.

In the SunSpider browser test, the Chinese phablet also came out ahead, although not significantly.

In the 3DRating benchmark, something went wrong with Lenovo and it showed a noticeable lag behind Samsung.

Meanwhile, in other three-dimensional tests, both simple Nenamark2 and complex 3DMark and GFX Bench, we see complete parity. This is exactly the result we expected.

According to ours, the battery life of the Lenovo Phab is simply excellent. Even the Galaxy Tab A's final result is very good, but the Lenovo device beats it. Great job, nothing more to say!

The maximum energy consumption in the Lenovo Phab came from 3D games - this is always the case. The remaining tasks, most of which require the screen to be on, consume approximately the same amount of energy.

Overall, the Lenovo Phab provides average performance and excellent battery life. It even significantly surpassed Phab Plus in this parameter.

Games on Lenovo Phab

Despite the not-so-fast processor and graphics card, games should run without issue on the Lenovo Phab. Firstly, they themselves adapt well to the capabilities of the device, and secondly, the screen resolution of the phablet is not very high.

  • Riptide GP2: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Asphalt 7: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Asphalt 8: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Modern Combat 5: Blackout: excellent, the game does not slow down;
  • N.O.V.A. 3: Some delays are visible;

  • Dead Trigger: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Real Racing 3: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Need For Speed: No Limits: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Shadowgun: Dead Zone: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Frontline Commando: Normandy: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Frontline Commando 2: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Eternity Warriors 2: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Eternity Warriors 3: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Eternity Warriors 4: Some delays are visible;

  • Trial Xtreme 3: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Trial Xtreme 4: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Dead Effect: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Dead Effect 2: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Plants vs Zombies 2: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Iron Man 3: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Dead Target: excellent, the game does not slow down.

As you can see, there are no problems. Only the newest and most graphically heavy games may slow down a little, which should not be too annoying.

Lenovo Phab runs Android 5.1, which is still good, although it will soon begin to “require” a minimum of Android 6.0. The most interesting thing is that Phab Plus, a more advanced and expensive model, comes with Android 5.0. Externally, the shells of the devices look the same; the processors, although different, are from the same manufacturer - Qualcomm - and of the same generation. Here is such a case.

The desktop looks normal, almost indistinguishable from the original Android. The Phab tablet offers a kind of lightweight version of the Lenovo shell - there is a division into desktops and a separate list of applications.

The notifications and quick settings panel also looks extremely close to a “pure robot”. There are perhaps more quick parameters. The list of recent applications, also known as the task manager, has also remained virtually unchanged - only an icon for clearing the list has been placed at the top.

Separately, you should note the “Special” section in the settings. Here you can turn on the microscreen, which makes one-handed operation somewhat easier. At the same time, the quality of the picture drops somewhat and it all looks a little strange, but the very fact of the presence of such a function indicates the positioning of the device closer to a smartphone than a tablet.

The application grid looks extremely impressive - 30 shortcuts fit here.

Among the preinstalled programs, one can note such as Dolby Atmos, where you can adjust the sound parameters of the phablet.

The Lenovo Phab icon hides an interactive guide to the device.

The SYNCit application provides a backup copy of contacts, SMS messages and call logs.

SHAREit is used to share files between devices.

The calculator is ordinary, but in horizontal orientation it becomes an engineering calculator.

The clock app includes alarm, world clock, stopwatch and timer functions.

Perhaps the only complaint about the software on Lenovo Phab is that it does not use the 64-bit capabilities of the processor. As you can see, the smartphone has a version of the system installed for the 32-bit ARMv7 architecture, while the 64-bit ARMv8 is designated as aarch64. Otherwise, everything is fine - nothing slows down, the interface animation is smooth, without jerks.

Conclusion

Lenovo Phab turned out to be a rather unusual device. First of all, because Phab Plus looks strange against its background - having a smaller diagonal screen, it provides almost the same body dimensions. It turns out that either Lenovo tried hard for Phab, or “cheated” for Phab Plus. But why do this if the second one is more expensive and you can potentially earn more on it?

So it turns out that the experience of using both Phab and Phab Plus is the same. Undoubtedly, the second one is noticeably faster, and the screen is better there, but still. Moreover, Phab is noticeably cheaper - about half, but at the same time its characteristics correspond to the average level, except for the amount of RAM. The RAM could actually be installed one and a half to two times more.

Lenovo Phab also pleased us with its autonomy - it is very good. The combination of a decent 4250 mAh battery, a moderately productive processor and a low-resolution screen clearly had an impact. Apparently, Lenovo also carried out some optimization of the device’s operation and the result is extremely positive.

What disadvantages does Fab have, besides RAM? Dimensions are a given. The screen resolution could use more, but that's the way it is. The lack of a headset included and the non-separable case can be overcome. So how much does such a “device” cost?

Lenovo Phab price

You can buy Lenovo Phab (PB1-750M) for 10 thousand rubles. At the beginning of 2016, it is noted only when ordering in the official Lenovo store. But even with this option the price looks extremely attractive. For that kind of money, it’s difficult to even buy a tablet with similar capabilities, let alone a smartphone.

Similar tablet phones can compete with the Phab, one of which is the Acer Iconia Talk S A1-724. It costs a little more - 12 thousand and offers the same Snapdragon 410 processor, 1 GB of RAM, 16 GB of internal memory, 5 and 2 MP cameras. The screen is almost the same - IPS, 1280x720, 7". In general, the design of the device is also similar to a smartphone, but the price is higher and the characteristics are slightly worse.

The 4G version of the Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8.0 tablet costs significantly more – almost 18 thousand. At the same time, you are already convinced that its speed is at least not higher. In terms of characteristics, it is quite close to the Lenovo Phab, the difference lies in the amount of RAM - 2 GB. But the cameras are noticeably worse both in quality and resolution - 5 and 2 MP. The Samsung tablet also has a noticeably lower screen resolution - 1024x768 with an 8-inch diagonal. In general, Phab looks much better compared to it.

Pros:

  • huge size;
  • affordable price;
  • excellent assembly;
  • interesting design;
  • good cameras for their class;
  • excellent autonomy.

Minuses:

  • huge size and weight;
  • non-separable body;
  • no headset included;
  • low resolution screen;
  • only 1 GB of RAM.

A phablet from Lenovo with a large screen has gone on sale, which is designed to replace two devices – a smartphone and a tablet.

Many users who always want to have a device with a large screen with them are faced with the problem of choosing - either to replace their smartphone with another with a large screen, or to additionally purchase a tablet. Both solutions have their drawbacks. A smartphone with a large screen is expensive, while a tablet is cheaper, but is not convenient because you need to carry two devices with you instead of one. In addition, you will have to set up and synchronize applications and data on two devices instead of one and solve the problem of connecting the Internet to the tablet, whereas on a smartphone you can use the service of one of the telecom operators for this.

Sharing devices, such as headphones, is also inconvenient. If you're watching a video or playing on your tablet with headphones, it's easy to miss a call on your smartphone, not to mention that dragging your tablet and smartphone back and forth is just annoying. The only advantage besides the price is that the tablet has a separate battery, which will keep the smartphone charged longer.

Another obstacle for some users is the reluctance to put up with the screen size of even relatively large smartphones with a diagonal of 5-5.5″. Still, they do not reach the level of a minimally comfortable tablet with a 7″ screen diagonal. On the other hand, a 7-inch tablet would be awkward to use as a smartphone, as holding it with one hand is quite difficult.

All these problems are designed to be solved by modern smartphones with large screens, called phablets (Phone + Tablet) or, in common parlance, lampshades (Tablet + Smartphone)

The Lenovo Phab Plus screen diagonal is an impressive 6.8″. At the same time, the screen is elongated, and the side frames are much thinner than most 7-inch tablets. This allows you to comfortably hold the phablet with one hand and at the same time without making compromises in terms of screen size.

The matrix itself is made using IPS technology and has a resolution of 1920×1080 (Full HD), which undoubtedly ensures high quality color reproduction, excellent viewing angles and picture clarity.

A modern 8-core Snapdragon 615 processor with a frequency of 1.5 GHz is responsible for performance. The RAM has a capacity of 2 GB, the built-in flash memory for installing programs, games and user files is 32 GB. In addition, it supports installation of MicroSD memory cards up to 64 GB. The announced technical characteristics leave no doubt about the highest performance of the phablet, which is enough for even the coolest games that will be released in the coming years.

The main camera for photo/video shooting has a resolution of 13 megapixels. The front camera resolution is 5 megapixels, which will ensure high quality video communication in Skype. The manufacturer also claims dynamic, mesmerizing and highly detailed sound quality, thanks to the use of Dolby Atmos technology.

In addition to standard wireless technologies - Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.0 and GPS, the most relevant for Russia today - LTE and GLONASS are supported, which will provide access to high-speed 4G Internet and improve the quality of navigation applications. The phablet supports the installation of two SIM cards, which has already become a standard for any modern smartphone, but is not available for the vast majority of tablets.

Another nice bonus is a modern lithium-polymer battery with a capacity of 3500 mAh, which is typical for modern tablets, but not every smartphone can boast of such a battery. However, given the large screen and fairly powerful hardware, you shouldn’t expect miracles from this battery; the phablet will work on it like any modern smartphone - about 1 day under high load and about 2 days under medium load.

The phablet has a rather stylish design and a unibody aluminum body in three colors - gray, silver and gold. Its thickness is only about 7 mm and its weight is 220 grams, which are very good indicators for devices with this screen size.

The device runs the Android 5.0 operating system with a nice proprietary Vibe UI shell developed by Lenovo.

The Lenovo Phab Plus phablet can already be purchased in Russian stores at a price of about 20 thousand rubles, but in our opinion it is worth it, since the device meets the most modern requirements and replaces a smartphone and tablet, which in total will cost no less, while being inferior in many respects and convenience. If you have not yet decided what is better - change your smartphone or buy an additional tablet, then do not hesitate - sell your old smartphone and buy Lenovo Phab Plus

Somehow, we paid undeservedly little attention to another new product from Lenovo - a tablet phone with a clever name PHAB Plus. This large smartphone or compact tablet is equipped with a 6.8-inch screen with Full HD resolution, is clad in a metal body, but otherwise it is a completely balanced mid-ranger. Its closest relative is the Lenovo PHAB without any arithmetic signs. We will also talk about it in this article.

The first thing you pay attention to is the size. The device is large, difficult to fit, but still fits in a man’s palm. To comfortably use such a device, you need to have a certain habit or a clear mindset to switch from two devices (smartphone and tablet) to one.

PHAB Plus can be perceived from two sides. Firstly, this is an over-smartphone and under-tablet. On the other hand, it is a universal device that is better than a smartphone, as it has a large display that can accommodate everything you need. And besides, the device is better than its tablet counterparts in that it has a much more compact size. A sort of thing that managed to combine the best of all worlds.

Personally, I am inclined to the second, positive perception. By the way, it is facilitated by a relatively small thickness of 7.6 mm, a metal body and a generally stylish appearance. I don't know about you, but personally, I look at the PHAB Plus and see the iPhone 6. Especially when comparing the back sides. After all, there are similarities, you must agree!

Device dimensions:

  • dimensions 186 x 96.6 x 7.6 mm
  • weight 220 g

From the front, the tablet phone resembles more. These Chinese brothers love to make wide frames at the top and bottom of the front panel of their devices.

Enough about perception, let's move on to objective indicators - Lenovo PHAB Plus specifications(model PB1-770M):

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processor (MSM8939) 1.5 GHz (64-bit, 8 Cortex-A53 cores)
  • Adreno 405 video chip
  • RAM 2 GB LPDDR3
  • built-in memory 32 GB
  • memory card slot: microSD up to 64 GB
  • 6.8-inch IPS display with a resolution of 920 x 1080 pixels (324 ppi)
  • 13 MP main camera with autofocus and LED flash
  • 5 MP front camera with fixed focal length
  • battery 3500 mAh (lithium polymer)
  • sound is provided by one speaker
  • technology support: SoundChambo / Dolby Atmos
  • connectors: Micro USB (2.0), audio output 3.5 mm
  • sensors: light and proximity sensor, accelerometer, compass

Wireless interfaces:

  • LTE (4G)
  • Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac)
  • Bluetooth 4.0, NFC
  • number of SIM cards: two slots for SIM cards (micro and nano)
  • GPS, aGPS, GLONASS

Our miracle Yudo tablet runs on the not-latest version of Android 5.0.2. The VIBE UI proprietary shell is preinstalled on top of the OS.

Unfortunately, in the test sample the system interface was seriously slow. Most likely, the reason lies in the non-final version of the software, and Android 5.1 will hopefully arrive in time by the time of release.

A more or less standard set of colors should hit the market: dark gray (Gunmetal Grey), silver (Titanium Silver) and gold (Honey Gold). Everything that the broad soul of the modern consumer needs. The price of Lenovo PHAB Plus stopped at $299. According to the old rate, it’s not a bad offer for such a stylish thing, but according to the new one... in general, let everyone decide for themselves.

Release date: before the end of the year Price: $299 Price in Russia: 19,990 rubles

However, that's not all. For a more practical population of the planet, another tablet phone was introduced - Lenovo PHAB, without Plus. There are very few differences, so we’ll just list them in a separate list for the younger modification under the index PB1-770M:

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processor (MSM8916) clocked at 1.2 GHz (64-bit, 4 Cortex-A53 cores)
  • Adreno 306 graphics
  • RAM 1 GB
  • built-in storage 16 GB
  • 7’’ IPS display with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels (210 ppi)
  • battery 4250 mAh
  • OS Android 5.1
  • Wi-Fi (802.11 a/b/g/n), that is, supports the latest ac protocol
  • dimensions 186 x 97 x 8.9 mm (younger version is 1.3 mm thicker)
  • weight 250 g (and 30 grams heavier)

The last parameter, which has an even more significant difference in this weight (see price) category, is the price, which in this case is $179. The remaining specifications are identical to the older solution.

Interestingly, less productive, and therefore less energy-hungry hardware, coupled with a more capacious battery, in theory, should provide a good level of battery life. You should expect 3-4 days of operation without recharging in average use. However, it is worth waiting for samples to make a final conclusion on this matter.
