A call from a hotel in Russia will cost much more than a call from a pay phone. In France they are ubiquitous. There are payphones not only in large cities, but also in small French villages. There are two types of pay phones.

The most common are publiphon, in which calls are paid using a special phone card. They are sold in kiosks, supermarkets, metro crossings and post offices and cost 8-20 €. A call to Russia will cost you approximately 1.5 € (60 rubles) per minute.

Much less common in France are machines of another type, point-phone, operating on coins. They are usually installed in restaurants and bars.

Local SIM card

Mobile communications in France are expensive. It is represented by three large companies Orange, Bouygues Telecom and SFR.

A local SIM card costs 10-30 €, with about 5 € appearing on the account. The account is topped up using prepaid cards. They are sold in communication shops, kiosks, and supermarkets. Cards are valid for a certain period, after which the amount expires: 5 € (1 week), 10 € (15 days), 15 € (month).

International rates vary depending on the destination country. You can get acquainted with them using directories that are issued by France Telecom agencies. Your interlocutor abroad can make a call at your expense. In this case you pay 44.50 francs. for operator services and the cost of the call itself. Not all countries have access to this service. During certain hours you can call at a reduced rate: 50% for domestic calls and at least 20% for international calls.

There are two types of pay phones in France:

On the street, in all public places (train stations, metro stations, airports, hospitals, TGV, Thalys and Eurostar trains). Upon arrival, stock up on a card for 50 units (48.60 francs) or 120 units (96.70 francs). Cards are sold at tobacco kiosks and post offices. You will be able to call within France or abroad thanks to the credit of telephone units. From these machines you can also make calls using a credit card (Visa and Mastercard/Eurocard).

These pay phones are available in bars and restaurants. Have some spare change! From any machine you can directly dial ambulance numbers (15, 17, 18 and 112), Numeros Verts and help desk (12).
