Hello! Very often, when I respond to various comments on articles on setting up routers on this blog, I need to describe how to do a certain procedure, for example, change the channel on the router. I have already advised you to do this several times in the comments. And I decided to put this little advice in a separate article, it might be useful to someone else, but I will only give a link and will not describe the same thing every time. That's how lazy I am :).

Let's first figure out what this is "channel" in the router settings, what it does and why change it.

How can I explain this in a way that is clear and truthful :). Channel is a “subfrequency” of the main frequency 2.4 GHz on which Wi-Fi routers work (but not all and not only routers). This 2.4 GHz frequency is divided into 11-14 channels. A channel is a kind of road from your router to your computer.

In the router settings, you can set the channel on which your Wi-Fi network will be broadcast. Routers that go on sale in Europe have 13 channels. And for example, devices for the USA have 11 channels. I hope you understand what a channel is.

Why change the channel on a Wi-Fi router?

Everything is very simple. If, for example, there are two routers whose signal intersects and operates on the same channel, then a variety of errors may occur in the operation of these routers, or more precisely in the operation of wireless Wi-Fi networks. Such as constant loss of connection to the router, low Internet speed and many more different and incomprehensible problems.

I am often asked the question that the Internet works on devices only when they are close to the router (approximately within the room). And when you move further away, the device’s network is maintained, but the Internet does not work. I don't know the exact reason why this problem occurs, but it seems to me that the problem here is strong interference. Perhaps there are already so many networks that there are simply no free channels. Well, there is no need to rule out technical problems with the router in this case.

Now take your laptop or phone and see how many wireless networks you have available to connect to. Your neighbors probably have routers installed, not just your Wi-Fi :), although anything can happen.

And perhaps one of those wireless networks operates at the same frequency as yours. And because of this, there may already be low speed, unstable connection, etc.

It’s good when in routers from TP-Link By default, channel selection is set to Auto. This means that the router itself will look for a free channel and use it. But as far as I know, in popular routers D-Link the default channel is set 7 . And here are two (and possibly more) such D-Link with standard settings will already work on one channel.

Which channel should I set in the router settings?

If you don't have many or no Wi-Fi networks nearby, then you don't have to worry about changing the channel. And install as desired. But I still advise you to install a static channel, not Auto. Why? I don’t know if this is true, but I noticed that on my 1 channel, the signal is stronger than with automatic channel selection.

If there are many channels, or all 13 are filled, then I advise you to set automatic search and select a freer channel.

In the router settings, go to the tab SetupWireless Setup. If installed, or the checkbox next to the item is already selected Enable Auto Channel Selection, this means that the router itself selects a free channel. To install a specific channel, you need to uncheck the Enable Auto Channel Selection item and specify the desired value next to Wireless Channel.


Save the settings by clicking the button “Save Settings”.

To understand which wireless communication channel to choose, you need to use special applications. Among the most effective and understandable programs it should be noted:

  • inSSIDer;
  • WIFIInfoview;
  • for Android.

The interfaces of these applications are different, but all have a channel viewing function that will help you find the frequency that is least loaded compared to the others. Having found a free Wi-Fi channel, set the appropriate value in your router using the desired menu item in the web client.

Now we need to talk about automatic selection of Wi-Fi channels. Most builders use this option in the factory settings. It allows you not to waste time selecting channels using a special program - the router will independently scan frequencies and select the least loaded ones among them to ensure maximum performance of the wireless network. It is strongly recommended for novice users to enable this option.

However, professional users prefer to manually select optimally performing Wi-Fi channels, which provides an important advantage. In automatic mode, the router spends part of its antenna bandwidth scanning free frequencies and identifying the least loaded ones. Problems with channel overload occur when several networks are connected to it at once. How does this happen?

  1. You install, for example, channel 5.
  2. A neighbor nearby also decides to opt for Channel 5.
  3. Thus, several networks have already used Channel 5. Imagine when there are several such neighbors.
  4. The channel is overloaded.

This problem is very common in apartment buildings, but less common in private buildings, since the distance to neighbors is large.

The initial settings are as follows: when you turn on the router, any channel is automatically selected (the one that is less loaded). When you turn off and turn on the router again, a different channel is selected.

Of course, you can set this setting - when turned on, the router will connect to a specific channel, for example, the second. This will always happen. But one day this channel may become very busy, and you will encounter the problems that we talked about at the beginning of the article. Therefore, automatic channel selection has an advantage. You can always reboot the device, and it will find another option, a freer one.

A useful thing is special programs that are designed to track which channels are busy and which are free. We will talk about them further.

But still, the easiest and most affordable way to deal with wireless connection problems is this. If after the first time you cannot solve the problems, then do it again. You can also experiment with the settings:

If you chose to install a static, that is, permanent, channel, go to automatic selection;

If, on the contrary, the router automatically selected the channel, set its specific number - first try 1,6 and 11.

Such manipulations help to cope with problems that have arisen.

How to work with special programs?

When your device (be it a laptop, smartphone or something else) shows that there are many different networks in a nearby radius, use special programs that will indicate to you the availability of a free channel.

The most famous program for this purpose is rightfully considered inSSIDer. Its main advantage is free access, that is, it is absolutely free. There is no menu in Russian; English will not be difficult to understand.

A good alternative is the WiFiInfoView program (I recommend using it).

Searching for a channel in the inSSIDer program

The algorithm of actions within the framework of this program will be as follows:

  1. First you need to download it. It is available (home version 3.0.3.53 for Windows 7 and Windows 8).
  2. Next comes the installation. Run the installer and follow the recommendations suggested in the instructions.
  3. Launch it by clicking on the appropriate shortcut (the shortcut will be on the desktop).
  4. The program can be easily installed not only on computers, but also on phones (based on Android/iOS).
  5. Turn on Wi-Fi. If you need to set it up, you can always find practical advice.
  6. After starting the program, go to the tab NETWORKS. You will see a list of available Wi-Fi networks that are nearby, including yours. You can find out about connecting to the latter if there is an asterisk next to it.
  7. We pay attention to Channel, namely, to what is displayed under this tab (information about busy channels).

A small recommendation: when you analyze busy channels, pay attention to channels such as 1, 6, 11. If other networks have not selected them, then first try setting up the router on them. If your router is Tp-Link, follow the following instructions if you want to change the channel:

  • A window will pop up asking you to enter data. Standard values ​​are admin, admin. In your case they may be different - maybe you changed them.

In most cases, the operation of the router under these conditions is completely acceptable. The ability to see nearby Wi-Fi networks and what channels they are using allows you to understand whether a channel change is required and which channel is best to switch to.

You can find out the wireless channel that the router is currently using by going to its administration page in the section related to the wireless network. There you can also change the channel used in the router.

To find an unused or least used channel in the reception area of ​​a router on a PC running Windows, you can use the excellent WifiInfoView and inSSIDer software by downloading it and running it on your PC.

Now we need to talk about automatic selection of Wi-Fi channels. Most builders use this option in the factory settings. It allows you not to waste time selecting channels using a special program - the router will independently scan frequencies and select the least loaded ones among them to ensure maximum performance of the wireless network. It is strongly recommended for novice users to enable this option.

However, professional users prefer to manually select optimally performing Wi-Fi channels, which provides an important advantage. In automatic mode, the router spends part of its antenna bandwidth scanning free frequencies and identifying the least loaded ones.
