Roaming services that allow you to save money

In Lithuania, two services from tele2 are available with which you can save:

  • Unlimited Internet abroad;
  • Conversations without boundaries;

Traveling to several countries in a row is a kind of torture for Internet addicts. Take, say, the European Union, where there are no borders, but a lot of roaming. They have been promising to cancel it for a long time, but still nothing. All kinds are crutches, and even if they solve the problem, they do so only partially. In many European countries, buying a SIM card is a whole story. In some (as, alas, in ours) it requires passport registration and is associated with various difficulties and conventions that require a lot of time and effort.

Thank God, in the Baltics, in this sense, everything is simple and, as if invented for car travelers. Here is my experience from the New Year's road trip Moscow - Tallinn - Riga - Vilnius - Moscow

SIM cards are sold at almost any gas station, kiosks and shops, and mobile Internet is inexpensive.

It is good not only because it explains how things are with mobile Internet in a particular country and helps you choose the best option. The main thing is that it contains activation instructions, which are often present on starter packages only in national languages. And even there they are silent about some tariff plans and options.

We didn’t really have time to look for the best options, so we took what was available at the gas station along the way. And here’s how much it cost me, the amount for one SIM card is given, it includes the price of the starter package and 1 GB of mobile Internet, which is more than enough for a couple of days (that’s how long we were in each country):

I spent about 10 minutes each time purchasing and activating cards.

Each of them still had some calls and text messages, but they didn’t bother me much, we only needed the Internet. Thanks to it, you can do without it for some time, but pretty soon your needs go beyond the limits of navigation maps and points of interest on them. By the way, here you should not act on the principle of “holding out to civilization, where there will be a lot of choice.” If you arrive in the city late, you will have to look for a working kiosk or shop, not to mention a communication shop, but gas stations are open 24 hours a day. The only thing is to avoid Neste gas stations, they are automatic, they usually have some kind of Hesburger running, but they most likely don’t sell SIM cards. It's a shame, because refueling at Neste is very convenient and cheaper than at many other gas stations. If you are traveling to Estonia, it makes sense to immediately put a little more money into your account, since it is easy to pay for car parking using your mobile phone - payment machines are not available in every parking lot. At local parking prices, 2-3 euros per day will most likely be enough for you. Most likely, this also works in Lithuania and Latvia, but there everything is fine with parking meters.

You can top up by purchasing a voucher in any store, or through the website, but Zen’s online service is very inconvenient and has a truncated Russian version, Pildyk does not have a Russian version at all, instead there is a pdf file with instructions.

By the way, those who want to save even on such, in general, non-ruinful expenses, especially by European standards, and most importantly - reduce the hassle of rearranging SIM cards, should take care of a pan-Baltic SIM card in advance, which is also a pan-Scandinavian one. There is one, but it is not sold at gas stations. You will need an agent in Estonia, who you need to ask for a simple favor - to purchase and ship this to you. There is roaming throughout the Baltics and Scandinavia, up to 5 SIM cards in one package, beauty.

However, for me this is still in theory, I haven’t tried it myself, but at the first opportunity I’ll study it. By the way, no one rents out a house on the Baltic Sea shore in August?

Prepaid comparison -tariffs of Lithuanian mobile operators.

There are three mobile operators in Lithuania: Omnitel, Bite and Tele2. All of them provide the opportunity to connect without concluding contracts.

Cards of all operators can be purchased both in mobile phone stores and in various retail outlets from Lietuvos Spauda kiosks to hypermarkets. All operators have inexpensive packages available that include up to a gigabyte of mobile Internet. Such a package usually costs around 2.5 euros.

From our point of view, there is no fundamental difference between the operators and the packages they offer, so you can safely choose any operator. At the same time, we would recommend that beginners choose a package with prepaid Internet traffic. Otherwise, Internet traffic will be charged at standard rates, which is quite ruinous. Of course, you can include an Internet plan for any package, but this will require additional steps and costs.

Omnitel Extra

Extra is a prepaid package from the largest mobile operator in Lithuania, Omnitel. As of November 2016, the following types of cards are sold:

  • A basic card that is not connected to any plan costs 1.5 euros and has 1.5 euros credited to its account. When making calls and using the mobile Internet, standard Omnitel tariffs are used, which will empty your account very quickly (calls within the Omnitel network - 0.05 EUR/min, calls to other networks - 0.14 EUR/min, SMS abroad - 0.084 EUR, 0 ,26 EUR for 10 Mb of data, etc.).
  • A card with prepaid 1Gb of internet and 4 euros in your account costs 5.50 euros. This card also allows you to call most countries in the world, including Russia and Belarus, for 0.39 euros per minute (standard rate is 0.53 euros/min to Belarus and 0.89 euros/min to Russia). In our opinion, this is the optimal type of Extra card for tourists.
  • Cards with connected Internet plans for 3 and 10 Gb respectively cost 8.40 and 14.19 euros. After 30 days, plans automatically renew if there is enough money in the account.

For all types of packages, mobile data used by Facebook (both through the browser and using the application) is not charged for 30 days from the moment of activation.

Money credited to the account expires 100 days after the last deposit. After this, the number can receive calls for another 250 days.
