One of the most famous and noisy is Paceville - the disco area. This is just one long street dotted with various bars, disco bars, discos. There are discos here, small and large, for youth and for older people. Life in Paceville begins only at 7-8 pm and does not calm down until the morning. Entry to all discos is free. During the day and evening, barkers stand in front of bars handing out coupons for free drinks. Choose any club to your taste or you can visit several in an evening.

Right in front of the embankment is the incomparable salsa bar Fuego. In the evening they teach you how to dance Salsa for free. All the Maltese come to dance here. Many come in pairs, others in the hope of finding a mate. All instructors are older men. Infinitely friendly and excellent movers. Amazing place. From 24 hours it turns into a Latin-style disco. And on the second floor there is an open-air hookah bar. There are no chairs or sofas here, only mats. Everyone lies down and takes a break from hot dancing, sipping an apple hookah. By the way, the most delicious Mojito in Malta is also here.

The luxurious Dragonara Casino, formerly the Dragonara Palace, the former residence of the banker Emmanuel Xecluna, built in the 19th century, is also located in Paceville.

St Julian's is also worth noting some historical sites, one of which is the Spinola Palace.

The Spinola Palace was built at the end of the 17th century by order of Paolo Raffaele Spinola, and was intended for public celebrations. Adjacent to the palace is a small park, which the Maltese proudly call the Spinola Gardens. It seems that the Maltese call any number of trees more than one a garden. At the beginning of the 18th century, the Spinola Palace was slightly rebuilt by one of the descendants of its founder, and at the end of the 18th century, during the French occupation, the Palace was badly damaged, since it housed French troops.
In St. Julian's there is the Watchtower of St. George, located on the very coast. The tower was built by order of the Grand Master of the Johannite Order Lascaris in the 17th century. The tower is not big, more like a turret, but it will certainly add to the impressions. The climb is free.

St Julian's Churches

The Old Parish Church was built at the end of the 16th century and was dedicated to St. Julian. Dates from the 16th century. The church is active.

Historical buildings are found at every turn in Malta. And in St. Julian's you will find many churches and chapels. You will see the Church of the Immaculate Conception, and the Church of St. Rita, and the Church of the Virgin Mary, and the Church of St. Clare, and the Millennium Chapel. It should be noted that in addition to this, at each corner in the recess of the wall there is a small colorful altar with a statue of a saint. This is what makes Malta so unforgettable.

Beaches of St Julian's

Right in the heart of St Julian's, St George's Bay is the city's municipal beach. The paid one is on the right, sun loungers and umbrellas are provided for 3.5 euros, and the free one is on the left, where everyone lies on towels and also enjoys it no less. The beach is very good, the entrance to the sea has a sandy bottom, and the location of the bay is such that there is always no wind in St. George's Bay. The Maltese themselves do not go swimming at the municipal beach, considering it exclusively a tourist joy, since it is located right in the city, in plain sight, and the Catholic religious traditions of the descendants of the knights still influence their worldview.

In the residential area of Pembroke, right behind the desalination plant, there is a rocky beach that not many tourists know about, but many locals prefer to soak up the sun here.
From anywhere on the island you can get to St. Julian's by buses No. 62,64,65,66,68,70, 627,652.

In the last week of July and the last week of August, Fests are held in St. Julian's. These are religious holidays accompanied by colorful fireworks. They are visible even from the island of Gozo.

If you are tired of gray and boring everyday life, you want fun and endless holidays, then urgently go to sunny Malta to the energetic town of St. Julian's. You will be enchanted by incendiary parties in nightclubs, midnight walks along the coast, the cordiality and hospitality of the local residents, as well as first-class service in all resort establishments. Tempting? Then continue reading our article.

History of the town

Like any other settlement in the state of Malta, St. Julian's was chosen by people several thousand years ago. In the Middle Ages, despite its advantageous location, the city was not particularly popular among the local population, because... the close location to the sea gave foreign invaders a reason to visit and rob the houses of the already poor fishermen. This is exactly what the Turkish fleet did in the 16th century, commanded by the corsair Turgut Reis, nicknamed Dragut. The Ottoman leader longed to capture the island state and get closer to the court of his ruler, Suleiman the Great. His plans were destroyed by the Knights of the Order of Malta, who mortally wounded the brave Turkish warrior. He died on one of the capes, which was later named Dragut in his honor.

In the second half of the 17th century, the first defensive structures and the famous Palazzo Spinola began to appear on the coast of the fishing village. At the end of the 18th century, the French arrived in Malta, occupied the remarkable palace and plundered all its wealth. The next owners of the island, the British, set up a military hospital in the Palazzo Spinola.

St Julian's remained a sparsely populated town until the 19th century. Of all the buildings there were the Spinola Palace, the parish church and the fishermen's huts. Over time, residences of wealthy Maltese began to appear in the city, and St. Julian's gradually began to transform into a fashionable resort. Today it is considered one of the largest and most developed resort towns in Malta.

Resort beaches

Not a single Maltese resort is complete without beaches. In St. Julian's there are only two coastal areas suitable for a comfortable beach holiday. We will talk about them below.

  • municipal beach in the bay of St. George. It is divided into two parts: on the right is a paid beach, on the left is a free one. In the paid area, vacationers are given umbrellas and sun loungers for 3.5 euros; in the free area, instead of sun loungers, people use their own towels. The entire territory of the bay has a sandy surface. This place is famous for its clear water, shallow depth and wonderful views of the bay and the sea. The infrastructure of the facility is developed: there are bars and snack bars, and there are changing cabins.

This is interesting! A small part of the sandy beach is the private property of the five-star Hotel Dragonara. You can become a happy visitor to this coastal area for a nominal fee.

  • rocky beach in the Pembroke area. The bulk of visitors to this coastal area are local residents. Descent into the water is only possible via a ladder, similar to the one we use in the pool. Keep in mind that there is no shallow water near the shore, i.e. you immediately plunge into deep waters.

Sights of St. Julian's

St. Julian's has several interesting attractions that every resort guest should see. However, do not count on an abundance of such objects - this is not what people go to the described Maltese town for. We present to your attention the top 10 attractions of St. Julian's.

Spinola Palace

The palazzo is considered the most important attraction of the famous resort. It was built on the initiative of the Maltese knight Paolo Spinola. A luxurious palace appeared in St. Julian's at the end of the 17th century. It was not built on the coast, but, according to rumors, the owners of the majestic building used an underground passage to escape in a few minutes from a possible threat from enemies by sea. The palace itself is decorated in Baroque style. A beautiful garden was laid out around it, which was used to house animals that took part in theatrical performances for the owners and residents of the palazzo. In the last century, the garden was converted into a public park, which became a favorite place for drunken young people who went to bars and restaurants located nearby. In 2007, the gardens of the palace were restored, giving them a Baroque style - to match the Spinola Palace. A cafe tourist office opened in the former park. At night this place is inaccessible to visitors. The Spinola Palace itself was restored in the 20th century. Today its owners are the owners of the Portomaso business center, located a short distance from the palazzo. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to see the majestic palace from the inside. An excellent view of its exterior can be seen from the public gardens.

Church of St. Julian

This place is also called Lapsi Church. Construction of the Church of St. Julian was trained by the knights of the Order of St. John. In 1580 a church appeared in St. Julian's. It did not stand for long - already in 1593 the building was demolished, and in its place another temple was erected, which served for almost a century. The building we see now was built in 1682-1683 by the architects Giovanni Barbara and Vincenzo Casanova. At the end of the 17th century, an earthquake occurred that destroyed many valuable buildings throughout the island. The cataclysm did not spare the Church of St. Julian, however, the intervention of the local bishop allowed the religious institution to be restored as soon as possible. In 1891 the church became a parish church. Today, there are two churches in the city dedicated to the patron saint of the resort, St. Julian. The second temple appeared in the 20th century within walking distance from the first church.

Millennium Church

One of St. Julian's modern cultural sites is located in Paceville next to Malta's only skyscraper, Portomasso. The youngest church in the city appeared in 2004 thanks to the initiative of the monks of the Augustinian order. The Millennium Chapel (this is what the second name of the Millennium sounds like) was built with funds from local parishioners. The monks promised that the new temple would become perhaps the only place in Paceville where you can enjoy tranquility and hear words of forgiveness and consolation addressed to you. These days, the Millennium Church is known for its good deeds: the priest, together with the WOW charitable foundation, organizes support groups for drug addicts, and also helps to employ poor citizens who are unable to find work on their own. Next to the chapel there is a bookstore with a wide range of literature on religious topics. The appearance of the church is classified as modern. It became very popular among the citizens of the resort. On some days, high-ranking Maltese officials and the local Prime Minister can be seen there. For tourists, the Millennium Chapel is open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. During church holidays, after the service, the church hosts impressive colorful concerts with the participation of dancers and artists singing Christian chants in a modern way.

The next religious site on our list is a state-of-the-art church built in 1973 by doctor and lawyer Gaz Paze for the Augustinian Order. It is designed for 800 parishioners, and has an atypical and extravagant appearance and interior for institutions of this kind. Its addition is the Millennium Chapel, which we described above. An amazing phenomenon for the Church of the Mother of God - Mother of Good Counsel is the special “youth” services held in the temple at 21:30. Other services organized for ordinary parishioners are held at the same time as in other churches (in the morning, at approximately 7 o'clock, and in the evening, at approximately 6 o'clock).

Chapel of the Immaculate Conception

The next religious site of St. Julian's was built by the prior of the Order of Malta, Rafael Spinola, in 1687. He erected a chapel near his residence, the Spinola Palace, for his own needs. A few years later the church was expanded and did not change its appearance until 1914. Reconstruction carried out in the last century preserved the façade of the building. The next renovation of the facility took place in the middle of the 20th century. Today the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception is active. It houses a valuable 17th-century icon, which dominates the interior of the establishment. Today, wedding ceremonies are held in the chapel, and during the celebration of festivals dedicated to the Virgin Mary, traditional processions of parishioners are organized, who decorate themselves with flags and flower garlands. Church workers are always happy to see tourists. If the clergyman is not busy with business, then guests of the attraction can count on a short excursion, during which they will be introduced to many interesting facts from the amazing past of the chapel and the resort as a whole.

St. George's Tower

One of the most interesting historical sites of the city is the tower of St. George, which is part of the Lascaris watchtowers. It was built in 1638 by order of the Master of the Order of the Maltese, Jean de Lascaris-Castellar, who continued to strengthen the shores of the islands of Gozo and Malta after Master Vignacourt. The tower is of modest size. It consists of two floors, each of which contains only one room. The roof of the object is flat, you can install weapons on it or set up a small squad of archers and defend against invaders. During the British rule, the tower was used to monitor the waters and surrounding areas of the resort. During World War II, a radio communication post operated here. Today the tower of St. George belongs to the Corinthia Hotel. There is a comfortable relaxation area with a swimming pool.

St. George's Barracks

This city landmark was built by the British in 1859-1862. It is within walking distance from the fashionable Hilton Hotel. The barracks attract attention with their appearance, because... are a true masterpiece of English colonial architecture. The attraction includes two blocks of equal size that have preserved the military symbols of the British. Several decades ago, the blocks were connected by a more modern building, and after some time additional premises were added to the barracks.

Monument to Love

You will find an unusual monument consisting of large inverted words LOVE next to the Temple of Balluta, also known as the Cathedral of Our Lady of Mount Carmel (we wrote about it in the article about). The trick of the object is that you can see the inscription correctly only in the reflection in the water. To solve a simple puzzle, choose the dark time of day, when the monument is beautifully illuminated with lights and the inscription is clearly visible on the sea surface. The author of the attraction is Richard England, the same architect who created the “White Shadows” monument, located in the neighboring resort of Sliema. In the evening, many people gather near the Monument of Love, trying to capture themselves against the backdrop of a luminous object from the most favorable angles.

Portomasso Business Center

It is impossible not to add to the list the only skyscraper in all of Malta, which is located in the Paceville area next to the Millennium Chapel and the Church of Our Lady of Good Counsel. Its opening took place in 2001. The Portomasso business center includes 23 floors. The main part of the area of the facility is occupied by a business center, the rest (6 floors) is the already familiar Hilton Hotel, located in the last block of the building. Hotel guests can count on VIP service and a unique view that opens from the top floors of the skyscraper. The infrastructure of the business center also includes a gallery with columns, a parking lot and a congress center. The Arcadia shopping center operates on the ground floor, and around the building there is a huge number of restaurants, offices, cafeterias and shops.

Spinola Bay

The main natural attraction of St. Julian's is the picturesque Spinola Bay. It is impossible to imagine the existing panorama of the city without this resort pearl. There is an embankment, a lot of shops and catering establishments, a statue of Love, places for swimming, a bus stop, benches, a diving club, etc. Cute boats and small boats constantly sail in the waters of the bay. Large flocks of ducks can also be seen here, adding a special romantic touch to Spinola Bay. Couples in love come here to watch sunrises and admire sunsets.

Note! We described some of the attractions of St. Julian's in the articles “Vacation in Malta. The main attractions of the island state" and "Guide to Malta: an unforgettable trip to Paceville."

General information

St. Julian's is an ancient settlement, as evidenced by the remains of Roman towers and burials found nearby, and even objects dating back to the Bronze Age. The town is named after St. Julian; the church of the same name was built on the coast at the end of the 17th century. St. Julian is famous for the fact that he killed his parents in his youth, after which he devoted his entire life to repentance.

Until the 16th century, the coast in these places was almost deserted. People feared first Muslim attacks and then pirate raids. Only at the end of the 17th - beginning of the 18th century did temples and knightly fortifications begin to appear here. In the 19th century, the Maltese nobility began to build up these places with country mansions and villas. So St. Julian's began to turn first into a holiday village for the local aristocracy, and then into a resort town for foreign tourists. The Maltese themselves love the town and owning real estate here is considered no less prestigious than in Sliema.

Sights of St. Julian's

Church of St. Julian(St. Julian’s Parish Church) - a small church was built in the 16th century, in the 18th century it was reconstructed and dedicated to Julian the Poor. Spinola Palace (Palazzo Spinola) - this palace was built at the end of the 17th century by the knight Spinola, an Italian by birth, as his own summer residence. A garden was laid out near the palace, open to the public. Sometimes performances were given in the garden. Now the garden and palace, once abandoned, have been restored. During the day the garden is open to the public.

St. George's Barracks(St. George’s Barracks) - two barracks buildings were built in the 19th century for English military engineers. The buildings are well preserved and represent a fine example of British colonial style.
