Modern smartphones have long been able to be used not only for communication, Internet surfing and games, but also for leading a healthy lifestyle. To add such a function to a mobile gadget, it is enough to purchase a device such as a fitness tracker or a Mi Band 2 bracelet, the average cost of which is 3,000 rubles. The device easily synchronizes with any smartphone on the Android platform and most models on iOS. However, when choosing it to monitor their health, users want to know what applications the Mi Band works with and what functionality it has. A review of several popular bracelet programs will help answer this question.

Applications for working with the bracelet

Many users of the first generation Mi Band are familiar with what applications are needed for the Xiaomi fitness bracelet - especially with the proprietary Mi Fit program. However, both the AppStore and Google Play have many other programs that are suitable for the device and provide various tasks - from monitoring exercise to making calls and controlling music. You can decide which Xiaomi Mi Band Android or iOS application to choose for your gadget only depending on the requirements for its functionality.

Official Mi Fit program and its modifications

Among the applications for Mi Band 2, the main one is the proprietary program from the manufacturer Mi Fit, which can be downloaded for a smartphone with Android OS in the Play Market. In functionality, it is similar to the Google Fit utility, with which it can synchronize for data exchange. The application has three screens for operation:

  • to display basic information - the number of steps taken and distance, sleep time, calories burned and heart rate;
  • to set up functions such as an alarm clock, notifications of calls and messages on a smartphone, reminders to lead an active lifestyle, synchronization with the Google application;
  • to change personal profile parameters - set anthropometric data and daily goals for distance and steps taken.

Notify & Fitness for Mi Band

The Notify Fitness for Mi Band 2 program refers to unofficial applications that can be used both with Mi Fit and separately. The old version of the utility is free, the new one can be purchased on the Play Market. Among its features it is worth noting:

  • not very user-friendly interface;
  • the ability to monitor heart rate at specified time intervals;
  • presence of a running training regime. Before setting up Notify Fitness for Mi Band to monitor running metrics, the user selects the frequency of readings, which affects the display of the exercise schedule.

Another important task that Fitness Notify Mi Band 2 performs is setting notification parameters from various applications, including those installed on the smartphone. Information about calls to the phone is also provided using the application. Although the bracelet is not capable of receiving the call itself.

Mi Band 2 Music Control

The useful Mi Band 2 application for Android allows you to control music files using a button located on the bracelet. The program is distributed free of charge and can be easily configured to work with music. To configure it is enough:

  • Open the program on the desktop of your smartphone;
  • Click on the icon that resembles a triangular Play symbol;
  • Wait while the Music Control program synchronizes with the bracelet.

To use the application, the user must press the button 1,2 or 3 times, sending a command to switch, play or stop the track. You can use the same key to take a photo and to scroll through tracks while the bracelet is performing other functions (for example, measuring heart rate). Such additional features are available in the paid version of the application.

Other useful applications

An additional program for the Xiaomi Mi Band 2 bracelet called Func Button allows you to configure the device for single, double or triple button presses and wrist rotations. These actions allow you to switch tracks, start a timer, accept and reject calls on your smartphone, and adjust the volume. For each type of press, you can set your own vibration option.

When considering other alternative Mi Band 2 programs, it is worth paying attention to the Selfie utility, with which the bracelet turns into a remote control for a smartphone camera. The advantages of the application include its free distribution. The downside is that it only works with some camera apps - for example, Free Camera and Bacon Camera, which you have to download from the Play Market.

Setting up the bracelet to work with iOS devices

In order to install the proprietary Mi Band 2 application on iPhone, follow these steps:

  • Download the Xiaomi Mi Band 2 program for iOS from the AppStore and install it on your smartphone and bracelet;
  • An account is created on the Mi server;
  • The program is configured (including entering personal data);
  • The installation is completed by rebooting, after which the program on Xiaomi Mi Band 2 for iPhone starts working on the phone and bracelet.

The setup procedure takes a few minutes, after which the program is ready for use. The same installation steps will be for other applications. Including the Notify Fitness for Mi Band utility for iOS, which can also be downloaded from the AppStore.

Work on smartphones with Windows

Finding an application for Mi Band for mobile versions of Windows is as easy as for other operating systems. The list of programs is too different from the versions for Android and iOS. It has the same proprietary Mi Fit utility with a pedometer, sleep statistics and a calorie counter.

Among the differences between applications for Windows Phone is the lack of firmware updates. In addition, the bracelet synchronized with the Windows Phone will not be able to receive notifications about messages and calls.

An activity tracker or fitness bracelet called Xiaomi Mi Band 2 will appeal to people who play sports or just like to go for morning runs.

Many people will prefer it because it has a screen. It also has a more capacious battery than its competitors.

And the ability to control using gestures makes it more convenient for everyday use.

We bring to your attention a complete review of this true king of modern mobile electronics.

Equipment Xiaomi Mi Band 2

In the cardboard box, the buyer will find the bracelet, the main unit itself, recharging and instructions written in Chinese.

The main changes affected the appearance of the device. A screen appeared and a sensitive control button appeared.

An excellent matrix allows you to easily read information in high light levels, and glare will not blind the user in the dark.

Basically, the display is in standby mode, it lights up if necessary. You can activate it in different ways - by pressing a sensitive button or by looking at your watch.

The device panel has a flat shape. The capacitive button does not respond to third-party objects.

In addition, other changes have appeared in the device. In particular, this is an improved heart rate monitor.

The intensity of light from the sensors has decreased significantly, and they are located differently.

The location of the heart rate monitor window has changed, now protruding 1.5 mm above the module.

Appearance

There have also been changes in the appearance of the Xiaomi Mi Band 2 strap. It now becomes possible to adjust it from 155 to 210 mm. At the same time, the total length of the strap is 235 mm.

The inconvenience of using the previous model was the location of the module on the outside, and it often fell out.

The design advantage of the new model is that the capsule can only be inserted from the hand side.

Also, being completely recessed into the recess, it protrudes above the device, which prevents the possibility of scratches on the screen and protects it.

Flaws

The new gadget, despite a lot of advantages and disadvantages, still has some disadvantages. In particular, it is large enough for a child and a woman.

Despite the fact that the fair half of humanity can still wear it, the Xiaomi Mi Band 2 will look bulky on their delicate hands.

In addition, the dimensions of the gadget increase the risk of damage. A durable strap ensures a secure hold on the hand and prevents it from falling to the ground.

The increase in dimensions made it possible to make the charger more durable and reliable. The charging pins built into it have increased, and the charger itself has become larger.

Therefore, the device from other models will not be suitable for recharging.

At the same time, you can use it to charge other models, but only if you use gaskets with which you can achieve reliable and precise contact between the contacts.

Functionality of Xiaomi Mi Band 2

This device differs from the previous version in its ability to work offline or through an application.

The set of functions of Xiaomi Mi Band 2 remains the same.

The gadget is capable of: tracking the user’s activity, counting the calories he used, heart rate, number of steps, and even monitoring sleep phases.

The device is equipped with an improved pedometer, which is characterized by increased counting accuracy. Therefore, the accuracy of the device has increased by 10-15%.

Heart rate monitor Xiaomi Mi Band 2

The heart rate monitor installed in the gadget is also more advanced. Its error has dropped to 5%.

The notification system operates in the same mode as its predecessors. The bracelet vibrates to indicate incoming calls and SMS.

Any notification from the application is accompanied by vibration and the display of the App icon.

Using this device, you can unlock another gadget associated with it, for example, a tablet or smartphone.

Unlocking is carried out via Bluetooth if they are in a paired state or within the coverage area of this interface (5 meters).

The operating temperature of Xiaomi Mi Band 2 is – 20 - + 70 °C. But at the same time, if you overcool the device, its battery life will be reduced to 128 hours.

It is not afraid of falling onto a hard surface from a height of 1.2 m.

Offline mode: screen and gesture capabilities

Xiaomi Mi Band 2 device

The Xiaomi Mi Band 2 screen displays information about the number of steps taken, time spent on training, and heart rate.

To display these readings on the screen, a special touch button is used.

The first press turns on the clock. After the second press, the device displays information about the number of steps.

The third press displays a heart on the screen, which shows the pulse value and subsequently displays any changes that have occurred during the past minute.

If you do not click on the key, when the screen appears, it will display the time and the last heart rate reading. The system will work similarly when performing step statistics.

Data updating occurs through built-in sensors. Synchronization with is required if the battery is completely discharged.

Constantly maintaining the battery level of the Xiaomi Mi Band 2 virtually eliminates the need to use an application or smartphone.

They may be needed only for the purpose of viewing statistics.

It should be noted that the time display function is conveniently implemented. A sharp turn of the hand will wake up the Xiaomi Mi Band 2 screen, which will immediately reflect the current time.

This effect is observed even when typing information on, if the hand with the bracelet is located on the table.

If you do not tear it off the surface, the system is guaranteed to work.

Device Compatibility

Xiaomi Mi Band 2 connects to any Android phone

The functionality of the device directly depends on the application you choose.

At the same time, taking into account the number of steps, tracking the phases of sleep and wakefulness of a person, and the distance traveled always occurs in any programs that this device can be equipped with.

Xiaomi Mi Band 2 goes well with programs and devices running . It should be noted that it has not been tested with iOS applications.

Therefore, if it is important to you, then it is better to install previous versions or use software from amateur programmers.

You can find other software on the Internet that can work with this gadget.

They have both advantages and disadvantages. You can try them and choose the most suitable one for a particular user.

And to avoid compatibility problems, look at .

Apparently, Xiaomi has decided to update its fitness devices every six months. Each of them makes a splash, and each time the company only increases its sales. Last year, Mi Band became the best-selling smart fitness accessory. We wrote about and about. It's time to tell your impressions of the second generation device - Mi Band 2.

Characteristics of Xiaomi Mi Band 2

  • Capsule materials: polycarbonate, plastic.
  • Bracelet materials: thermoplastic silicone vulcanized.
  • Housing protection class: IP67.
  • Functions: heart rate measurement, pedometer, distance and calories burned, sleep monitoring, smart alarm clock, call notifications, tablet/smartphone unlocking.
  • Sensors: three-axis accelerometer, optical heart rate monitor.
  • Indication: monochrome OLED display with a diagonal of 0.42 inches, vibration motor.
  • Battery: built-in lithium-polymer with a capacity of 70 mAh.
  • Autonomous operation: up to 20 days.
  • Wireless: Bluetooth 4.0 LE.
  • Operating temperature: –20 to +70 °C.
  • Dimensions: 40.3 x 15.7 x 10.5 mm.
  • Weight: 7 g.
  • Compatibility: iOS 7 / Android 4.3.
  • Delivery set: module, bracelet, charging cable.

The new product differs from other Xiaomi fitness bracelets by the presence of an OLED screen and a touch button. The bracelet consists of two parts - a plastic capsule and a strap. The module has become larger. The weight has also increased, although it is not felt. Basic functionality not related to the screen has remained virtually unchanged, as have the requirements for the smartphone with which the device will work in tandem.

Appearance and delivery set

The line's traditional cardboard box contains the Mi Band 2 module, a bracelet, instructions in Chinese and a charger.

The main module has undergone significant changes. The top panel is now occupied by an OLED display and a touch-sensitive button. Due to the matrix used, the image on the screen is perfectly readable in the sun and does not dazzle in the dark. The display is dark most of the time and turns on only when necessary: when you press a button, receive an alert, or need to look at your watch (read below for how to do this without touching the device). The button is capacitive and does not respond to third-party objects. The entire panel is now flat.

In addition to the appearance of the screen and the button embedded in it, there are other external changes. So, Xiaomi Mi Band 2 uses a new heart rate monitor - this can be seen upon closer inspection. There is less light from the sensors, the LEDs are located differently. But most importantly, the heart rate monitor window is now located in the fairing, which rises above the module by almost 1.5 mm.

The strap has also changed. It is now adjustable between 155mm and 210mm, with a total length of 235mm. The module of the first version was inserted from the outside and periodically fell out. In the new design, the functional capsule can only be inserted from the inside (from the arm side). In addition, the capsule does not protrude; on the contrary, the edges of the notch in the bracelet rise above it, protecting the screen. This corrects two of the most serious design flaws - no more scratches and no loss!

Since the updated device is significantly larger than the first model, certain problems arise during use. For example, a child can no longer wear it. On a miniature female hand, the Mi Band 2 bracelet looks bulky and can be too big.

Due to its increased dimensions, the device can often hit something. Only a durable bracelet can save you.

Following the changed dimensions of the capsule, the charger also changed. It became deeper and wider, the charging pins became longer. An old charger will not work. Installing Mi Band 1 or 1s into the slot for the second model is more realistic, but only with the use of some kind of spacers to ensure contact between the charging contacts and the module.

Functionality

Unlike previous versions, the new product can work offline or through an application. However, the general set of functions has remained virtually unchanged.

The bracelet can still monitor activity, heart rate, count calories, steps, distance, and also track sleep phases. The pedometer of the new product is improved and, according to the manufacturer, more accurate. The difference in readings between Mi Band 1s and Mi Band 2 reaches 10–15%. The device no longer responds to simple hand waves.

Since the update also affected the heart rate monitor, we can also expect an increase in accuracy here. The error during testing did not exceed 5%.

Alerts work to the same extent, but their range depends on the application used. When receiving calls and SMS, the bracelet vibrates. When notified by an application, a double vibration occurs and the App icon is displayed.

Like previous models, Xiaomi Mi Band 2 can unlock a paired smartphone via Bluetooth if both devices are within range of the interface. In fact, unlocking works at distances not exceeding 5 m.

The bracelet is capable of operating in difficult temperature conditions from +70 to −20 °C. In case of hypothermia, battery life will be reduced to 128 hours. Xiaomi Mi Band 2 can withstand a fall onto a hard surface from a height of 1.2 m.

Offline mode: screen and gesture capabilities

Mi Band 2 displays the most significant information on the screen: time, number of steps taken, heart rate. A touch button is used for display. The first press on it turns on the clock. On the second press, the gadget shows the number of steps. By the third, a heart is displayed on the screen and the pulse measurement starts, or its value is shown if the pulse has changed during the last minute. If you do not tap the button after the measurement has been taken and wait until the screen turns off, then the first time you touch the button, not the time, but the heart rate value will be displayed. The same will happen with step statistics.

All data is updated using built-in sensors. The device only needs to sync with your smartphone if the battery is low. If you charge the Mi Band 2 on time, you can use the smartphone and the application very rarely, and then only to view statistics.

The time display function is very conveniently implemented. To recognize it, just turn your hand sharply - the screen wakes up and shows the time, regardless of the last type of data viewed. This works even when typing on the keyboard with your hand on the table. There is no need to tear it off the surface; it always works.

Applications and Compatibility

As before, the functionality of the device depends on the selected application. Pedometer, distance traveled, sleep tracking and detailed statistics are present in versions of the program for any device and market.

The iOS application has not been tested. But with the Android versions, things are not the best. Now the official application on Google Play works with any Mi Band, smart scales and two types of sneakers, just like the Chinese application. There is also unlocking of the smartphone using a bracelet. When it's nearby and paired with your phone via Bluetooth, you don't need to enter a password. However, it does not have a running function, but it does have synchronization with MyFitnessPal and Google Fit.

The official Chinese version of the application, distributed through the MIUI OS proprietary store, cannot synchronize with other applications. But there is a running mode, activated by a special button, as well as a voice assistant for the running mode (in the amateur build it is translated). And, according to some reports, it is possible to build a track for a walk or jog (this point has not been verified).

All official applications allow you to set up alerts (for Android 4.4 and higher and iOS) about incoming calls and notifications from three applications to choose from. When there is a call, the device vibrates twice, pauses and continues the cycle while the call is in progress (by the way, you can set a delay from the start of the call so as not to experience unnecessary discomfort).

The new Mi Fit app can vibrate to remind the user to move throughout the day.

Unfortunately, starting from version Mi Fit 2.0, the smart alarm clock has disappeared from the application. Even if it appears, it still doesn’t work. Therefore, if this feature is important to you, it is better to use previous versions or amateur builds.

There are also ones for working with Mi Band. Each of them has its own pros and cons, try them out and choose the most suitable one.

Autonomy

Despite the fact that the bracelet arrived in a whole plastic package, the battery was charged. According to the application, the gadget was charged 29 days ago. With the screen turned off, it lasted for 29 days.

After two days of active testing (3–5 synchronizations, up to 20 heart rate measurements, an attempt to freeze, frequently turning on the screen, working as a clock), the battery charge level dropped to 16%. If you exercise often enough and wear the Mi Band 2 like a watch, the battery will last for 12-15 days (with more accurate sleep tracking enabled, which takes frequent heart rate measurements). With less active use, the device can last 20–30 days.

Testing in aggressive conditions

Despite the IP67 protection against water and dust declared by the manufacturer, users quite often complained about the Mi Band 1 and 1s due to leaks. The test unit perfectly survived hot and cold showers and even attempts to drown it under a direct stream of water for an hour. True, it was revealed that the first touch of a stream of hot water activates the button. If the flow is not interrupted due to movements or turning off the water, repeated alarms are not observed.

The button also works on a bracelet frozen to −18 °C. Moreover, both after removal from the freezer and directly in it. Reacts to cold and wet fingers.

Results

All Mi Band users agreed that the device needed a screen. Xiaomi engineers did exactly what was asked of them. Now Mi Band is an unattractive bracelet that, if necessary, turns into a fitness gadget. To take or not to take? Definitely take it.

Now the price of Xiaomi Mi Band 2 (where it is actually in stock) reaches $60. This phenomenon is temporary, designed for fans who want to quickly receive the long-awaited gadget. During the summer, its price will probably decrease.

Let us remind you that official sales of the new Mi Band started on June 30. A couple of weeks after this, the devices will appear in store warehouses available to Russian buyers.

Unfortunately, the box with the branded Mi band 2 did not contain instructions in Russian. Not all owners know English, so the Russian-language manual will be useful to many users.

What is in the box?

Here you can find information about the configuration of the gadget and its components.

Account registration

In order to use the Mi Fit app, you need to register an account. This chapter provides detailed instructions for creating an account.

Registration in the application

Registration on a smartphone is carried out in a similar way. We recommend adding a phone number so that you can recover your password if necessary.

Install Mi Fit

The next step is to install Mi Fit. This application should definitely be installed by all owners of Mi band 1, 2, 3, since the functionality is configured and data is uploaded to this utility. You can install the official application or use third-party modifications.

Authorization in the application

Now you need to enter your Mi account details and set up a profile in the program. You can change your profile information at any time, but it is better to provide the correct information.

Tracker binding

Now you need to pair your device. Select “Bracelet” from the list, accept the terms of use and wait until the search ends. The binding will need to be confirmed with a button on Mi band 2.

Software update

If necessary, Mi Fit will begin updating the device firmware. Wait for the download and installation to complete. After this, the application interface should open.

The program interface is very convenient and understandable. All functionality is divided into appropriate tabs, so you can easily find any option. There are detailed statistics for a certain period of time.

Weight data

A weight graph is available in the program (data is taken based on the entered indicators). Body mass index and body composition indicators are also calculated. At the very beginning of the setup (when filling out your profile), be sure to indicate your current weight.

Achievements

Achievements are one of the main sections in the Mi Fit interface. Data on goal achievement is presented here. You can send information about your successes to a social network or Telegram messenger.

Run

The “Running” function works correctly only when GPS is turned on. You need to give the app permission to access your device's location information. This mode displays detailed information on distance, time, pace.

Setting up notifications

In the “Notifications” tab, several items are available that are responsible for certain functionality. You can set up notifications for alarms, messages, calls and messenger events.

Unlocking your smartphone and services

Another interesting feature is unlocking your smartphone through Mi Band 2. To do this, you need to configure everything correctly and test the operation.
