Google Desktop is a free computer program for searching email, files, music files, images, chats, and web pages viewed in the browser. Allows you to make the search for the necessary files instantaneous (unlike the built-in Microsoft Windows tools), sort the results by relevance and other parameters, and see citations from the found files. Previously, the program was called Google Desktop Search.

When you first launch Google Desktop, it indexes your searchable files. In the program settings, you can specify folders to be excluded from indexing. Subsequently, the program “on the fly” indexes the contents of opened files.

Also, using plugins, you can expand the number of supported search formats, add your own panels, and also expand the functionality of the program.

Google Desktop Supported Formats

  • Email

Microsoft Outlook

Microsoft Outlook Express

  • Browser history
  • Microsoft Office Documents
  • Messengers
  • Other formats

You can also add support for other formats using plugins.

Google Desktop Features

  • Panels

Includes panels for displaying various information, for example:

  • Deskbar

A field for entering search terms directly in the taskbar, the result is displayed as a menu, the full list of results can be opened in the browser.

  • Quick search window

Pressing the Ctrl key twice opens a floating Quick Search window.

  • Gadgets

In version 4 of the program, so-called gadgets appeared - floating windows, for example, a computer battery charge indicator or a clock. They can be docked into a sidebar like the one included in Microsoft Windows Vista. Versions for Mac OS X and Linux do not include the sidebar and gadgets; for these operating systems they are included in a separate Google Gadgets package.

Disadvantages of Google Desktop

  • Logical OR not supported
  • Only 10,000 words are indexed, and only 100,000 files are indexed during initial indexing.
  • Renaming and moving files is not tracked - they remain in the index under their old names.

Under new names, they will be included in the index only after complete re-indexing, which before the release of version 4 was possible only with the help of third-party utilities. In the 4th version of the program, a forced reindexing function appeared.

  • Google Desktop allowed arbitrary code to be executed on the computer on which it was installed through a later-fixed vulnerability in Microsoft Windows NT related to the handling of the WMF format.
  • It is not possible to use the indexing results of one computer from another within a local network without the mediation of Google Internet servers.

Google Desktop is a program that makes searching on your computer as easy as searching Google on the web. This application provides full-text search of everything on your computer: email, files, music, photos, chats, Gmail and web pages viewed, and more. By making it easier to find information on your computer, Google Desktop keeps everything at your fingertips and eliminates the need to manually organize files, emails, and bookmarks.

Google Desktop not only finds files, but also helps you gather new information from the Internet and keep your computer organized with gadgets and a sidebar. Google gadgets can be placed anywhere on your desktop to view new messages, weather, photos, personal news, and more. A sidebar is a vertical panel on your desktop where you can place your gadgets in an order that suits you. Google Desktop requires Windows Vista/XP/2000 SP3+ to run.

Useful results

When you perform a Desktop search, a page appears that shows you the most relevant search results. For each result, a file name and a small piece of text with the search terms highlighted are indicated. You can filter results by a specific content type (for example, to find only files) by selecting the appropriate link at the top of the page. We recently added a feature to preview Desktop search results right in your browser, so you no longer have to wait for the entire app to open to see if it's the file you want.

Smart Indexing

Once installed, Google Desktop begins indexing emails, files, and web history stored on your computer. This one-time indexing only occurs when your computer is idle for more than 30 seconds, so it should not affect your computer's performance. Depending on the number of items to be indexed, this may take several hours. Desktop continually updates the index to include incoming emails, changed files, and web pages as you view them.

The Google Desktop home page is the center for managing the information stored on your computer. To go to this page, just click "Desktop" above the search box on the Google.ru website or double-click on the Desktop icon in the lower right corner of the taskbar.

Finding Deleted Files

Google Desktop creates copies (snapshots) of files and other items each time you view them and stores them in a cache on your computer's hard drive. So instead of having to recover items you deleted by mistake, you can simply find them using Google Desktop.

Quick search window

The Quick Search window in the center of your desktop is the fastest way to search the web and search on your computer: you can open or hide the window by pressing the CTRL key twice. Just enter a few letters or words into the search box and a list of the most relevant results will immediately appear on the screen. You can also use this feature to launch applications without opening the Start menu. For example, if you have Microsoft Word installed on your computer, you can launch it by typing "wor" in the Quick Search box and selecting "Microsoft Word" from the list of search results that appears. And to search the Internet, you can simply enter a query and press "Enter".

Support for different file types

Google Desktop automatically indexes the following types of items on your computer and allows you to perform full-text searches on them:

Advanced search form

Clicking the Advanced Search link next to the search box on the Google Desktop home page opens the Advanced Search form. Here you can select search operators to specify the type of search you want to perform, and also specify the results from what time period you are interested in.

Google Gadgets

Google Desktop allows you to instantly get the most relevant and interesting information to you using Google Gadgets. Gadgets are interactive mini-applications that you can place anywhere on your desktop and view incoming mail, weather forecasts and stock quotes, photos and news collections. You can also add gadgets such as a calendar, clock, notepad, task list and many others.

Regular and free search bars

If you don't need the sidebar, it can be minimized to a desktop search bar (which will look like a small search box right on the Windows taskbar) or a free search bar (this is a search box located on top of other windows that can be moved to any desktop location). Both options allow you to quickly launch applications and perform searches on your computer and the Internet.

Side panel

Google Gadgets can be pinned to the Sidebar, which is a vertical bar on your desktop that primarily serves to manage your gadgets. Gadgets can be dragged onto the desktop or sidebar, and moved up or down to arrange them in the desired order. The Sidebar can be configured to always sit on top of other windows, making it look more natural on your desktop thanks to recent improvements.

Interface for adding gadgets

The add gadgets interface makes it faster and easier to find new gadgets. To call it, just click the "+" button at the top of the sidebar or select "Add gadgets..." in the "Settings" menu. In the window that appears, you can browse gadgets by category by clicking on the headings on the left, or search for specific gadgets using the search box in the top right corner. When you find the gadget you want, just hover your mouse over it and click the "Add" button.

Downloads

Google Desktop is a program for organizing searches of local files on your hard drive. The application can index existing data, organize information and store versions of documents. Supports calling the search window using a key combination and the ability to restore deleted items. Can filter objects by extension, modification date, contextual phrases or file attributes.
