Internet in Lithuania

Lithuania ranks first in the world in terms of Wi-Fi quality and speed. There are access points in almost all large shopping centers, hotels, cafes and restaurants, museums, as well as on the streets of large cities (in the most popular public places).
For example, in Vilnius these are: the courtyard of the Teacher's House, the open-air restaurant "Cili kaimo", Town Hall Square, K. Sirvydas Square, Moniuszko Square, Europe Square, Recreation Area on the White Bridge. Wi-Fi in the listed places is free, access point is Cgates.

There is also paid Wi-Fi Zebra - there are about 4,000 access points throughout Lithuania. Cost - from 0.87 euros per day. A map of access points in Vilnius can be obtained on the operator’s website.

Internet

Several hotels and a couple of restaurants have Wi-Fi hotspots. According to some information, they can be used for free. GPRS roaming is available to subscribers of major Russian operators. Internet access is available at the National Library and at Internet cafes, which can be found in major cities.

When planning to visit any of the neighboring countries, tourists first of all think about how they will communicate during the trip, that is, about mobile communications. Of course, you don’t have to worry about this at all and continue to use roaming (if any) from your own operator, but as practice shows, this is quite expensive. Especially if you are not on a business trip and mobile expenses are paid out of your own pocket. Therefore, you should clarify in advance which operator is more convenient and profitable to use, based on your specific communication and needs.

You will need

  • Visit Lithuania and purchase a SIM card from one of the mobile operators.

Step by step solution

  • Let's start with the most important thing - choosing an operator. There are three of them in Lithuania: Bite GSM, Omnitel and Tele2. And also a virtual mobile operator - Eurocom. You can connect to these operators without concluding contracts. The two most popular mobile operators are Bite and Tele2, or rather their prepaid tariffs Labas and Pildyk. These tariffs are the most favorable for calls within the country. If you need to make calls abroad, it is better to purchase prepaid cards. They are sold at post offices and all newsstands.
  • The largest mobile operators in Lithuania, Bite and Tele2, have excellent quality coverage throughout the country, and outside its borders they automatically include roaming services. There is no subscription fee for using the package; the SIM card remains active for six months, regardless of whether it is used or not.
  • These cards can be purchased at any large store, Lietuvos spauda kiosk, or gas stations. There you can also top up your balance. To do this, just ask for a check to be issued to the specified operator at the cash desk. The electronic banking system is very convenient - if you have access, the SIM card owner can top up your account or resolve any other issue on the website of the corresponding mobile operator.
  • How to call abroad from Lithuania? This question worries many guests of the country. If you are calling from a landline phone, you must dial: 00, country code (to which you are calling), local code, subscriber number. There is such a pleasant moment as a 30% discount, valid from 22-00 to 6-00 on weekdays, and throughout all weekends and holidays.
  • How to call Lithuania from abroad? Remember the international code of Lithuania – (+370). You must dial the number in this order - first access international communication (depending on the country, it will differ). Then the area code (depending on whether you are calling a mobile phone or a landline). For example, to a landline number: dial international access + 5 (this is the code of the capital of Lithuania) + phone number. On a mobile phone – international access code + phone number (without the 8 at the beginning).

note

  • Wi-Fi in Lithuania is available almost everywhere and is absolutely free. Restaurants, Internet cafes, hotels, shops, shopping and entertainment centers - this list of places where the Internet is caught can be continued for a long time.

There are three mobile operators in Lithuania. Each of them provides prepaid services under a separate brand.

  • Telia - prepaid brand: Extra and Ežys;
  • Tele2 - prepad brand: Pildyk;
  • Bitė - prepaid brand: Labas;

There is also a wireless Internet provider LRTC, which uses WiMAX and 4G/LTE technologies. It provides services under the Mezon brand.

Coating

As a rule, there is good 3G/4G coverage throughout Lithuania. You can view the current coverage (GSM, UMTS, LTE) of all Lithuanian telecom operators.

Additional Information

The three main operators sell their prepaid services under different names: Pildyk, Labas and Ežys. Tariffs, compared to the EU, are quite affordable.

Prepaid SIM cards can be purchased in branded stores of the relevant operators, gas stations, supermarkets, cafes, kiosks, etc.

No passport or registration in Lithuania is required for purchase.

Roaming in the EU

Lithuania is a member of the European Union, where new international roaming rules have been in effect since June 2017.

However, as is often the case, there are exceptions. All three operators are allowed to apply surcharges to domestic tariffs for roaming in the EU.

Telia blocks data roaming on Extra and Ežys cards, while Labas and Pildyk release combined packages for roaming in the EU. You can read more detailed information on each operator below.

Extra and Ežys (Telia)

Telia (formerly TEO), owned by the Swedish-Finnish Telia Group, has the best 3G coverage. 4G/LTE covers almost 99% of the population. The operator offers two prepaid tariffs called Extra and Ežys (translated as hedgehog).

How much does it cost and where to buy the package

Extra and Ežys SIM cards are sold at prices ranging from 1.50 to 2.00 euros. They can be bought in Telia communication stores, in Iki, Rimi, Maxima supermarkets, in kiosks, cafes and other retail outlets. There, as a rule, you can purchase checks for replenishing your account.

All Extra and Ežys SIM cards are issued in triple size. You can choose which one you will use: mini, micro or nano.

Extra and Ežys SIM are very similar, but include different data packages. SIM card management is the same. Same coverage, application and payment methods.

Activation and Validation

To activate the SIM card, you must dial 1544. Listen to the voice menu; press "9" to select English; then press "1" to activate the card and hear your phone number. Activation is free.

To check your balance, dial 1544, press “2” in the voice menu (€ 0.03 per request) and you will hear the balance of your number.

The SIM card is valid for 100 days after its first use. Then, for 250 days, it will only work for incoming calls and SMS messages. After 250 days, the SIM card will be blocked. To extend the validity, you need to top up your account. Each €1 top-up adds 30 days to the life of the SIM card.

Roaming

By default, roaming outside Lithuania is disabled. To enable it, text +TRP to 1566 (cost €0.05). After this, you will be able to use the SIM card, but only for calls and SMS.

Ezys account replenishment

You can fund your account in various ways:

  • With a recharge card: You can find a plastic card with a special barcode in every new Ezys package. With this card you can make instant top-ups at supermarkets, kiosks and gas stations. If you want to top up your account, simply give your top up card and the required amount of money (or your credit card) to the cashier. The cashier scans the barcode and your account will be topped up instantly. The minimum deposit amount is € 1.
  • refill vouchers: you can buy a refill voucher at kiosks, supermarkets, gas stations and Telia salons. The check will contain all the information that will allow you to top up your account with the required amount. This is usually done using a USSD request. Checks have an expiration date.
  • by credit card online. Select "ĮKRAUK IŠ KORTELĖS" to top up your account online using a credit card.

Pildyk (Tele2)

The operator Tele2 has insignificant 3G coverage, but worse than Telia. 4G/LTE covers 95% of the population. Their brand for the prepaid tariff is called Pildyk (translated as top-up).

How much does it cost and where to buy a sim card

A SIM card, which costs about 2 euros, can be bought in Tele2 stores and small stores throughout the country. Checking your ussd balance using *245# costs 0.04 euros. You can also check your balance using a smartphone app or online.

Prepaid package Pildyk from Tele2 operator

After replenishment, Pildyk users can make outgoing calls for 100 days, incoming calls for 180 days. If the account balance is 0, then the SIM card will work for another 80 days, after which it will be permanently blocked.

Replenishment of Pildyk

To top up your account, you can purchase vouchers at Tele2 stores, kiosks, supermarkets, gas stations, etc.

You can top up your account from abroad on sites such as Ding or recharge.com. In this case, you will need a credit card or Paypal account.

Roaming

You need to buy one of these two roaming packages:

  • 10 minutes, 10 SMS, 50 MB for 24 hours; 1 euro; activation: EU1;
  • 50 minutes, 50 SMS, 300 MB for 7 days; 4 euros; activation: EU7.

Activation code - 1556.

How much does it cost and where to buy a SIM card?

The Labas SIM card can be purchased in Bite stores, Rimi, Iki, Norma, Maxima stores, etc.

The package contains a SIM card of three sizes - there is no need to cut out the one you need.

By default, roaming is enabled.

Labas account replenishment

Vouchers for replenishment can be purchased at kiosks, stores, and Bite brand stores. The minimum top-up amount is € 2. The voucher contains two codes and instructions for entering them using a ussd request.

Mezon (LRTC, Telecentras)

The State Lithuanian Radio and Television Center (LRTC), also known as Telecentras, provides telecommunications services under the Mezon brand. It provides services in the 4G/LTE range, covering 70% of the Lithuanian population.

Currently Mezon does not have prepaid tariffs.

How to call Lithuania

If you live in Belarus and you need to contact a resident of Lithuania, you need to know the code of Lithuania, the city in which the subscriber lives and his personal telephone number. In simplified form, the dialing rule looks like this:

Lithuania code (370)—city code—subscriber number

In this case, you need to consider which telephone you are making the call from. The rule for calling a Lithuanian subscriber from a mobile phone and a landline phone is different, but the general dialing pattern can still be traced: country-city-personal number.

How to call Lithuania from a landline

If you only have a landline phone at hand, then the sequence of actions when making an international call will be as follows:

  • Lithuania dialing code – 370;
  • Enter the city code, for example, Kaunas - 37;
  • Finally, enter the number of the Lithuanian subscriber.

When accessing international and long-distance calls, you must wait for the dial tone and then continue dialing.

How to call Lithuania from landline to mobile

The steps are similar when dialing to a landline number, but instead of the city code, the code of the mobile operator is entered, and then the subscriber’s number:

  • Access to the international line through figure eight;
  • Exit to a long-distance line by pressing 10;
  • Lithuania dialing code – 370;
  • Enter the operator code;
  • Enter the mobile number of the Lithuanian subscriber.

How to call Lithuania from mobile to mobile

Having a cell phone at hand makes the procedure much easier. There is no need to use special communication lines. Just dial the subscriber's number in the format:

Lithuania code (+370)—mobile operator code—subscriber number

In this case, do not forget to type + before the Lithuania code. After dialing, there will be a direct connection with the subscriber.

The dialing procedure from mobile to landline is practically no different. You only need to replace the mobile operator code with the code of the city in which the Lithuanian subscriber lives.

To call a specific city, use the directory of telephone codes for Lithuanian settlements.
