What book format does Android support? The most common formats and programs. How to open DOC and DOCX text format on Android Download the txt application for Android

Modern tablets and smartphones are increasingly used not only as dialers and gaming gadgets, but also as indispensable assistants in work and study. They allow you to record lecture material, view office documentation, keep records, and much more. These tasks cannot be completed without a full-fledged editor on the device that can work with DOC and DOCX text files. Therefore, every mobile device user should know how to open DOC and DOCX format on Android.

Programs for opening and editing text documents

DOC is rightfully considered the most popular text file extension. Its introduction into many areas of life gave impetus to the development of software that can open and edit the specified format on Android. And to date, many effective programs have been created that successfully cope with the task.

The most popular mobile applications that allow you to work with DOC and DOCX documents are:

  • Quickoffice;
  • MS Word;
  • Office Suite.

Manage text documents via Quickoffice

This program for opening DOC on Android is one of the developments of Google Corporation. It is freely available, that is, if necessary, it can be downloaded for free from the Play Market, and is pre-installed on many mobile devices.

Quickoffice has extensive editing capabilities. Among its many tools, the following should be highlighted:

  • creating, reading and editing files in DOC, DOCX, XLS, TXT, etc. formats;
  • viewing information with PDF extension;
  • working with data recorded on Google virtual storage;
  • sending files by email.

A significant advantage of Quickoffice is its full compatibility with the Google cloud service. This allows you to record documents on a virtual disk and work with them remotely on any device, be it a PC, Android or iPhone. At the same time, each user is provided with 15 GB of free space, which is more than enough to perform everyday tasks.

Let's look at how to open a DOC file on Android via Quickoffice:

After creating a new or opening an old text file, a numeric keyboard for typing will appear on the screen of your mobile device. Using the toolbar, you can set the size and change the style of symbols.

To save the text you have typed, click on the floppy disk, and then specify the name and extension of the created file. You can also open an existing document using Quickoffice. To do this, call up the program settings, click Open and specify the path to the required file.

Opening and editing DOC documents through Microsoft Word

Another popular text editor for Android devices is the well-known Microsoft Word utility. Its mobile version has an interface similar to the PC program and all the functionality required for convenient work with DOC and DOCX files.

The main advantages of MS Word for Android are:

  • intuitive controls that even a novice user can understand;
  • the ability to add tables, charts, shapes, SmartArt, etc. to documents;
  • writing a file to a virtual disk, which can be DropBox, Share Point, OneDrive or Google;
  • synchronization of the program on several devices, which allows you to work with one document from different places;
  • automatic adaptation of the page to any screen diagonal.

It should be noted that for stable operation of Microsoft Word, the characteristics of a smartphone or tablet must meet the following requirements:

  • RAM – more than 1000 MB;
  • 150 MB of free space on the internal memory card;
  • Operating system version no lower than Android 4.4.

Office Suite for Android

Considering what DOCX is and how to open this format on Android, you should also highlight the Office Suite program, which also takes pride of place among mobile text file editors.

Books in my electronic library of classical literature are old - in the format .txt and encoding dos. Look for replacements in other formats (for example, .fb2) and encodings are not necessary, since the type of electronic formatting does not add anything to the writer’s thoughts, and it’s a shame - then you would have to assemble the library again. Considering that I own an Android phone, I think my aspiration is clear - I'm looking for an Android phone e-reader for files .txt.

The choice is small. We managed to download six free programs for Android, the ability to work with .txt followed from the descriptions (the names of the installation packages are given in brackets):
AlReader(AlReader.apk),
CoolReader(cr3-3.1.2-33-arm-armv7a-x86-mips.apk),
EBookDroid(ebookdroid-x86-1.6.6.apk),
FBReader(FBReaderJ_ice-cream-sandwich-2.0beta8.apk),
Kingsoft Office(kingsoft_office_android.apk),
Moon+ Reader(zthMoonReader.apk).

Programs EBookDroid And Moon+ Reader are not suitable for my task. EBookDroid files .txt doesn’t see at all, and .fb2 can't open. Moon+ Reader doesn't know the encoding dos(cannot be installed manually), such books in it look like a canvas covered with questions. Besides, Moon+ Reader obsessively with offers to buy it as a pro version.

Specialized in .txt, there are basically no available and free e-readers for Android. Multi-format readers are “tailored” for .fb2, and with a simple .txt they do a bad job - they ignore or distort even the minimal markup that appears there (for example, indentation in the text). The readers were not without artifacts, i.e. created by them, but absent in the original, highlighting fragments and even inserting phrases. The richest in artifacts turned out to be CoolReader, was not free from artifacts and FBReader. Programs AllReader And Kingsoft Office no artifacts were given.

AlReader does not distinguish between lines and paragraphs in the source file. Therefore, it is suitable for reading in the format .txt, perhaps, poems or text files obtained by conversion in Word. By and large, a reader for .txt AlReader is not the files though .txt opens confidently.

CoolReader the only one of the four tested programs was distinguished by its ability to “chew” text. One .txt-file CoolReader I couldn’t open it at all, it showed blank pages without a single word. The program has many settings, some of them are unclear ( font kerning And font hinting), I'm not sure that I should set up things like this to read books.

FBReader copes with .txt, in my opinion, better CoolReader-ah, many books look perfect in it. At the same time, for FBReader-and are characterized by: 1) the scale of the artifacts ( FBReader is able to “recognize” the title and highlight one and a half or more pages of text; 2) the appearance of voids, sometimes almost the size of a page. Among the unpleasant features FBReader-and I’ll note the forced scanning of the “books” directory I created earlier on the memory card. Scans FBReader slowly, you cannot disable scanning of this particular directory (there is a lock in the settings). Actions that cannot be canceled and are unnecessary for the user, especially those that are performed slowly, are a serious drawback of the program.

The format of books that Android supports (tablet, smartphone, etc.) is determined by the applications installed on the device with this operating system. Nevertheless, there are the most common formats of electronic publications, which, in fact, are what application developers focus on.

In this article, we will look at what format of books is supported by Android 4 and other versions of this OS, how these formats are characterized, and in which of them it is preferable to download literary works to the device.

FB2

FB stands for FictionBook. This is one of the most popular e-book formats. An Android reader is even named after him - FBReader - which, in addition to the above, opens other files.

Text with the .fb2 extension is formatted using XML markup, that is, it is described with tags. This is what ensures the format’s compatibility with various devices, and also makes it easy to create, transfer and store books. No wonder it is so popular among users.

In addition to the specified reader.fb2 also opens Cool Reader, Monn+ Reader, ALReader without any problems.

EPUB

The Electronic Publication format is actively promoted by Adobe, and quite successfully. It consists of zipped publication data files created based on XML markup of the book text itself (HTML tags or PDF). All additional materials, such as illustrations, formulas and tables are also stored in separate files. This ensures similar publications on completely different devices. "Android", of course, is among them.

Interestingly, EPUB has copyright protection features. On the Android system, it can be opened by the already mentioned CoolReader, the well-known FBReader and the Aldiko Book Reader reading program.

TXT

The TXT format is a simple text file (even the name itself is deciphered accordingly). On the Windows operating system, you can create one in Notepad, a standard application. This provides the main advantage of the format - it can be opened by almost everyone. But for e-books in TXT format there is a main drawback: the formatting of the publication is lost, since a text file is just a sequence of characters.

But TXT is the absolute answer to the question of what book format Android supports (without installing additional applications). Most likely, such a book will open in the browser by default. But readers like FBReader can handle it too.

HTM

This format is based on HTML markup. In fact, a book in this extension is a hypertext. Unlike TXT, there are more opportunities for including illustrations and insertion of various objects. By the way, this is another format that does not require additional applications (although e-readers are happy to open it). HTML is common when creating web pages, so the *htm book will open in Google Chrome, a standard browser, or any other downloaded program for surfing pages on the Internet.

RTF

The meaning of this format can be literally translated as “rich text”. On Windows it opens using WordPad and regular office Word. The same analogs of programs can be used on Android. However, prudent developers take rtf into account when creating programs, allowing them to open it.

RTF is the next step after TXT, using simple meta tag markup. Most support importing into it.

On Android, this format is opened by CoolReader (users note that the application does not do this quite correctly), Foliant, NOOK for Android.

Finally

As we can see, in essence, when asked what book format Android supports, you can safely answer “any common one.” There are countless readers for this operating system, a certain number are released from time to time, and proven products have support for updates to open more and more diverse formats.

For those who love to read, the e-book has long become an indispensable assistant. Along with e-book modern smartphones based on Android with book reading program are no less convenient and sometimes even superior to e-books in functionality.

Smartphone owners often do not know what manipulations (i.e. installing programs) should be done to teach their devices to read.

You should choose a program primarily based on the presence of useful functions, such as: reading as many book formats as possible, since it often happens that when searching for the right book, there is only one copy and only in one format. You also need the ability to make bookmarks - no one likes to look for the place where they left off.

The function of highlighting text and saving it as notes is also quite good.
